[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-06-20 Thread Craig
Mr Ordono, thanks for this great work!

I just compiling the package myself, and noticed two interesting
warnings:

1) checking for notify_init in -lnotify... no
configure: WARNING: libnotify not found; notification disabled

Should a build dependency on libnotify-dev be added?

2) dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${misc:Depends}
dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${misc:Depends}

3) On karmic, the package compiles and works great!

4) On jaunty, if the dependency on liburiparser-dev is dropped and
--disable-unity is added to the configure line, the packages and works
great!

I can't wait until the amd64 situation is resolved. I'm quite psyched
:-) Thanks again

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-20 Thread Lem
Cody, I don't think it's a case of we don't know the solution, but
rather giving the users savvy enough the option to select what suits
them best. I already said that for myself, I find it annoying in KDE and
Windows (the single click after select for rename). When I'm renaming,
I'm going for the keyboard almost always, so hitting F2 isn't that much
extra work, in fact it's more deliberate going for F2 (or right
click/edit - rename). Too many times in KDE and Windows have I entered
rename mode when I didn't want it, then it's a matter of pressing escape
or clicking elsewere.

My suggestion was to enable rename on single click after select by
default to bring the behaviour in line with other operating systems
(obviously there's enough people wanting it this way, and the idea of
these hundredpapercuts is for first-time user usability; chances are
they came from Windows), but provide an option (not buried in GConf) for
those of us who aren't used to, or don't like this behaviour. I myself
think it's perfectly fine as it is (and has been for ages). In this
respect I agree with some of the other comments about Ubuntu is not
Windows and GNOME is not KDE, why should it aim to be the same, etc.

[Bug 318551] Re: incompatible font name change between 4.1.8 and Hardy LTS

2009-06-20 Thread Apteryx
I've toyed a bit with packaging and built my own. I downloaded the
karmic package ttf-linux-libertine_4.4.1-1_all.deb and replaced all
.ttf files with the ones from the official website (see post above).
Modified the m5dsum accordingly. My .deb also contains the Linux
Biolinum font. The hack in the karmic ttf-linux-
libertine_4.4.1-1_all.deb which created an alias in the .font.conf was
removed, since no more necessary. The mysterious 'O' is no more, and it
works great.

I'm quite an amateur for packaging, so feel free to post remarks about
the package I built. May we learn something in the process.

Still... Why the 'O' ? :D

You will have to uninstall ttf-linux-libertine before installing my
custom package.

[Bug 323815] Re: Install progress window has no title

2009-06-20 Thread Lightbreeze
A 'paper cut' is something that might be encountered many times during
the day, which this clearly would not be, as ShawnJGoff points out.

Don't worry though, you're right, this _is_ a design issue. The window
should either skip the taskbar or have a title. Thanks for helping to
polish Ubuntu :D

[Bug 380858] Re: HP printers Media Source selection stopped working after upgrade to 9.04

2009-06-20 Thread MMarking
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 with HPLIP 3.9.2 from the repo, I just replaced
the hpijs binary with the 2.8.7 version binary from the Ubuntu 8.10
repo, and it works. I made 3 successful test prints; 1 each to the
CD/DVD tray, letter tray, and photo tray.

I'm happy with all 3 trays working again like they did in Intrepid even
if this is considered a hack workaround, however I'd like to know what
possible side effects might happen by replacing the hpijs binary with a
different version from the HPLIP driver? Thanks.

[Bug 107974] Re: Evolution will not remember exchange password

2009-06-20 Thread Hans-Peter Schadler
It doesn't only happen with Exchange. It also happens using a *dav server. Not
matter of using a calendar or contacts.
As soon as you open Evoltution and click on calendar, tasks or contacts tab, it
shows a password prompt.
The annoying thing is, that you can't see any contacts (i.e. when you write a
new mail) as long as you haven't clicked on the contacts tab and entered the
password first.

[Bug 389807] Re: Cannot drag select in Nautilus (list view)

2009-06-20 Thread Lightbreeze
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49348 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49348

from bug #49348

This is a new feature, not a trivial usability fix, so it is not
considered a paper cut.

Implementing the rectangular select in list view would involve writing
and testing new code. I agree that it would be a great fix to make, and
it affects usability greatly, but it requires new code, which is what I
mean by it being a new feature. It's not a feature that you would
advertise if you were selling Ubuntu, but it is a feature nonetheless.

[Bug 389814] [NEW] settings lost after reboot or awake

2009-06-20 Thread knut
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu Jaunty (with all updates)
NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.100
Thinkpad R51

I had two static connections in the wired networks section of NetworkManager.
After upgrading to jaunty these were lost so I added them again. Only after a
reboot they remained in the list (before that they always disappeared somehow).
Now I have these two connections and additionally two entries I don't
understand: ifupdown (eth2) and ifupdown (eth0).
According to dmesg e1000 is used for eth0 but eth2 does not appear. ifconfig
confirms eth0 as my wired network interface and additionally displays eth1
which seems to be my wifi adapter.

Now I face with the following issue:
After reboot or awake from hibernate the wireless network is always
(re)enabled. Additionally the last used wired network is not active instead no
one is selected.

I don't know which files or logs could help here so please guide me.
thx.

[Bug 389817] [NEW] Doesn't connect, stops at Available/Connecting

2009-06-20 Thread cannibals_r_us
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I use Ubuntu Hardy with Gnome and I'm using Pidgen 1:2.4.1-ubuntu2.4.

I went to log on as normal and now it says Available-connecting and
doesn't do anything. No buddy list and I'm not even signed online.

I'd love to be able to use Pidgen for my chatting needs.

[Bug 386740] Re: [K8M800] mouse pointer corruptly displayed at the bottom of the X screen

2009-06-20 Thread Márton Németh
I corrected the debug patch to handle values bigger than 0x7FFF
correctly.

I did some investigation with different pos and offset settings. I could
find out that:

when writing to the pos and the offset registers there are the following fields:
 - the vertical position (y) is a 11bit wide register at bits pos[10:0]
 - the horizontal position (x) is a 12bit wide register at bits pos[27:16]
 - the vertical offset (y) is a 7bit wide register at bits offset[6:0]
 - the horizontal offset (y) is also a 7bit wide register at bits offset[22:16]

All other bits are ignored when writing and interpreted as if they were
set to 0 by hardware.

I have an HP TX1000. It's a tablet and the touch screen is supposed to work.
I have also tried many theoretical fixes on Ubuntu forums without success.

I downloaded the Evtouch package. When I open up the screen calibration,

[Bug 389818] Re: error resizing window when i have too many pictures

2009-06-20 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for your bug report. Could you explain a little more exactly
what happened? What is meant by too many pictures? Too many pictures
open on the screen. Too many pictures in a folder? Please walk us
through what steps we could take to reproduce this bug ourselves.

Also, what exactly happened. It is unclear to me from the screen shot.
Did your screen lock up? Did a program crash. Please be more specific
here as well. Thank you.

2009-06-20 Thread kwilliam++
@vatbier: Thank you for sharing this! It's disheartening to know that
the problem is that deep in the hardware, and little progress has been
made to port the pop filter. On the other hand, it at least lightens my
day to know it is not a bug in any of the open source packages, and
hence is not the free software community's fault!

[Bug 388750] Re: Repeat the search online does not work

It looks as though the URL needed is
http://search.ubuntu.com/results2.html?cx=009650792990864903260%3A-
lsdjshi1tucof=FORID%3A11q=SEARCHQUERY

Assuming the cx and cof url params are something to identify our google
custom search to google.

The change to the online search will have broken every single supported
version of Ubuntu, do we wish to do a server side redirect for them?

Not to split hairs but it's the ubuntu-website that has changed and yelp
which has the search patch.

[Bug 349314] Re: Slow performance and tiling issues on i915

2009-06-20 Thread Vlad Tudorache
I've just subscribed to this forum. For me, using ASUS EeePC 701 Surf
4G, the solution (also working on Arch and other distros) was VERY
simple. Just add the

OptionTilingFalse

to xorg.conf as shown below (the text between and is xorg.conf),
then everything works perfect, no kernel change needed.

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration
# tool, using values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type man xorg.conf at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package
# upgrades *only* if it has not been modified since the last upgrade

[Bug 389825] [NEW] KMail not honouring the KDE locale

2009-06-20 Thread Uqbar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

kmail:
  Installed: 4:4.2.4-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa2
  Candidate: 4:4.2.4-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa2
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.2.4-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

I have defined a mixed locale in order to have US English language with
European numbers and dates.
In particular dates have been defined as
Time format: HH:MM:SS
Date format: WEEKDAY DD MONTH
Short date format: -MM-DD

Instead in the mssage panels I always see the date column as
DD-MM-YY pH:MM:SS AMPM

[Bug 389783] Re: after signing in in pidgin chat, it does not connect but appears as INVISIBLE/AVAILABLE CONNECTING

2009-06-20 Thread Nick Holloway
The Pidgin support page (http://www.pidgin.im/support/) has a link to
Pidgin cannot connect to Yahoo! (http://www.celticwolf.com/useful-
information/faqs/26-pidgin-yahoo).

Yahoo! appears to be upgrading their servers to a new version of their
software. This new version requires a new authentication method. The
latest version of Pidgin, 2.5.6, does not support this new
authentication method. The next version, 2.6.0, will, but it has not
yet been released.

[Bug 389829] [NEW] Displaying rebuilding search index in Synaptic is confusing

2009-06-20 Thread Vincent
Public bug reported:

Displaying rebuilding search index in Synaptic isn't really helpful
for a user when they don't know what a search index is or what
rebuilding it will result in (and I guess there are quite a few people
for whom this is the case). A better option would perhaps be telling the
user that newer packages might not yet be found using this tool at the
current moment. Or not displaying anything at all - if newer packages
weren't there before, then it doesn't really matter if the user has to
wait a few more moments before he can find them using this tool. (Not
sure how often packages are removed and whether this would pose
problems.)

As a sidenote, I don't think the text label (most of the times Quick
search) with so little padding stuffed above the search field confirms
to the HIG. It at least looks messy.

And while we're at it, this related papercut is also worth taking a look
at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/280395

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-06-20 Thread Jason Waddle
I registered just to say that I have been seriously affected by this
bug, and it certainly deserves more than the medium designation.
Single core, ~1GHz processor, would deadlock consistently on rm -rf'ing
a directory of photos (~4MB each, thousands of them) using the stock
ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-11 (then -.13) on an ext4 filesystem (native),
LVMed and RAID-1. All of the LVM RAID overhead might have exacerbated
the bug if it was a race condition.

I love Linux in general, and have been very happy with the hands off
safe, stable feel of Ubuntu distros, but this latest install was a
freaking disaster since I primarily use this machine remotely. If EXT4
was known to be so unstable, it should have been marked so. Since the
bug has been known for months, and people have offered to ship pre-
installed machines that can reliably reproduce the problem, some more
progress should have been made. Admittedly, it's tough to bitch when I
haven't done anything to help fix the problem, but seriously I would be
much happier if someone just upgraded the bug status from medium.

I've gone to the mainline kernel 2.6.30 and I had to install the newer
180 version of nvidia drivers in order to do so. Very helpful
directions for how to do this are given here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/384639.
After the switch to the mainline kernel, no problem with the mass
deletes. I highly suggest that anyone having this problem do the same.
These directions should be linked on the main Ubuntu Jaunty page.
Releasing with ext4 (without any sort of cautionary warnings in the
installer!) in this shape was a serious mistake.

Ubuntu folks, when am I going to be able to tell my mom it's a good idea
to ditch the Windows and go Ubuntu?

[Bug 388750] Re: Repeat the search online does not work

2009-06-20 Thread Dougie Richardson
Yes I agree, lets do it server side. I went through yelps source last
night and am unclear which XSL gives the string in question (from the
comments in yelp-search-parser.c) - I certainly couldn't find it.
Perhaps it would be worth bringing yelp back in first, as it might be
more obvious than I read it, especially as my C is rusty.

[Bug 363532] Re: Several system beeps on shutdown

2009-06-20 Thread Ivan
Just a correction/extension to the above in case it is relevant:

I have three different PCs, two with Jaunty and one with Mint Gloria
(based on Jaunty). The first Jaunty shuts down with no beeps, the second
Jaunty (a Compaq DeskPro) and the third Mint Gloria (a Dell Optiplex)
both have several beeps and are significantly older models - just ask
for more details if helpful. There are different numbers of beeps each
time in rapid succession hence the confusion in my previous post
(usually between 3 5 ish). No beeping on either when I log off first
before shutting down.

I do not recall the multiple beeps when I was using Hardy or Intrepid on
the same PCs. They do not occur with Live CDs of Intrepid, Hardy or
Feisty or AntiX-M8 (all used on the Compaq DeskPro yesterday to explore
question #74686).

2009-06-20 Thread w1zard
This bug was found during an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, so
probably doesn't apply to 9.04. At the time I was reporting so it could
be fixed for others doing this same upgrade. I have since upgraded to
9.04 without VLC problems, so assume this has been fixed in later
releases.
