Mr Ordono, thanks for this great work! [Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
Cody, I don't think it's a case of we don't know the solution, but rather giving the users savvy enough the option to select what suits them best. I already said that for myself, I find it annoying in KDE and Windows (the single click after select for rename). When I'm renaming, I'm going for the keyboard almost always, so hitting F2 isn't that much extra work, in fact it's more deliberate going for F2 (or right click/edit - rename). Too many times in KDE and Windows have I entered rename mode when I didn't want it, then it's a matter of pressing escape or clicking elsewere. My suggestion was to enable rename on single click after select by default to bring the behaviour in line with other operating systems (obviously there's enough people wanting it this way, and the idea of these hundredpapercuts is for first-time user usability; chances are they came from Windows), but provide an option (not buried in GConf) for those of us who aren't used to, or don't like this behaviour. I myself think it's perfectly fine as it is (and has been for ages). In this respect I agree with some of the other comments about Ubuntu is not Windows and GNOME is not KDE, why should it aim to be the same, etc. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 318551] Re: incompatible font name change between 4.1.8 and Hardy LTS
I've toyed a bit with packaging and built my own. I downloaded the karmic package ttf-linux-libertine_4.4.1-1_all.deb and replaced all .ttf files with the ones from the official website (see post above). Modified the m5dsum accordingly. My .deb also contains the Linux Biolinum font. The hack in the karmic ttf-linux- libertine_4.4.1-1_all.deb which created an alias in the .font.conf was removed, since no more necessary. The mysterious 'O' is no more, and it works great. I'm quite an amateur for packaging, so feel free to post remarks about the package I built. May we learn something in the process. Still... Why the 'O' ? :D You will have to uninstall ttf-linux-libertine before installing my custom package. ** Attachment added: ttf-linux-libertine_4.4.1-1ubuntu1_all.deb http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28133892/ttf-linux-libertine_4.4.1-1ubuntu1_all.deb -- incompatible font name change between 4.1.8 and Hardy LTS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318551 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Please walk us through what steps we could take to reproduce this bug ourselves. Also, what exactly happened. It is unclear to me from the screen shot. Did your screen lock up? Did a program crash. Please be more specific here as well. [Bug 389829] [NEW] Displaying rebuilding search index in Synaptic is confusing
Public bug reported: Displaying rebuilding search index in Synaptic isn't really helpful for a user when they don't know what a search index is or what rebuilding it will result in (and I guess there are quite a few people for whom this is the case). A better option would perhaps be telling the user that newer packages might not yet be found using this tool at the current moment. Or not displaying anything at all - if newer packages weren't there before, then it doesn't really matter if the user has to wait a few more moments before he can find them using this tool. (Not sure how often packages are removed and whether this would pose problems.) As a sidenote, I don't think the text label (most of the times Quick search) with so little padding stuffed above the search field confirms to the HIG. It at least looks messy. [Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28
I registered just to say that I have been seriously affected by this bug, and it certainly deserves more than the medium designation. Single core, ~1GHz processor, would deadlock consistently on rm -rf'ing a directory of photos (~4MB each, thousands of them) using the stock ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-11 (then -.13) on an ext4 filesystem (native), LVMed and RAID-1. All of the LVM RAID overhead might have exacerbated the bug if it was a race condition. I love Linux in general, and have been very happy with the hands off safe, stable feel of Ubuntu distros, but this latest install was a freaking disaster since I primarily use this machine remotely. If EXT4 was known to be so unstable, it should have been marked so. Since the bug has been known for months, and people have offered to ship pre- installed machines that can reliably reproduce the problem, some more progress should have been made. Admittedly, it's tough to bitch when I haven't done anything to help fix the problem, but seriously I would be much happier if someone just upgraded the bug status from medium. I've gone to the mainline kernel 2.6.30 and I had to install the newer 180 version of nvidia drivers in order to do so. Very helpful directions for how to do this are given here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/384639. After the switch to the mainline kernel, no problem with the mass deletes. I highly suggest that anyone having this problem do the same. These directions should be linked on the main Ubuntu Jaunty page. Releasing with ext4 (without any sort of cautionary warnings in the installer!) in this shape was a serious mistake. Ubuntu folks, when am I going to be able to tell my mom it's a good idea to ditch the Windows and go Ubuntu? -- Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/330824 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 388750] Re: Repeat the search online does not work
Yes I agree, lets do it server side. I went through yelps source last night and am unclear which XSL gives the string in question (from the comments in yelp-search-parser.c) - I certainly couldn't find it. Perhaps it would be worth bringing yelp back in first, as it might be more obvious than I read it, especially as my C is rusty. -- Repeat the search online does not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388750 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 363532] Re: Several system beeps on shutdown
Just a correction/extension to the above in case it is relevant: I have three different PCs, two with Jaunty and one with Mint Gloria (based on Jaunty). The first Jaunty shuts down with no beeps, the second Jaunty (a Compaq DeskPro) and the third Mint Gloria (a Dell Optiplex) both have several beeps and are significantly older models - just ask for more details if helpful. There are different numbers of beeps each time in rapid succession hence the confusion in my previous post (usually between 3 5 ish). No beeping on either when I log off first before shutting down. I do not recall the multiple beeps when I was using Hardy or Intrepid on the same PCs. They do not occur with Live CDs of Intrepid, Hardy or Feisty or AntiX-M8 (all used on the Compaq DeskPro yesterday to explore question #74686). -- Several system beeps on shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363532 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 303640] Re: package vlc-data 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/share/vlc/vlc16x16.xpm', which is also in package vlc
This bug was found during an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, so probably doesn't apply to 9.04. At the time I was reporting so it could be fixed for others doing this same upgrade. I have since upgraded to 9.04 without VLC problems, so assume this has been fixed in later releases. -- package vlc-data 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/share/vlc/vlc16x16.xpm', which is also in package vlc https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303640 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 89517] Re: Synaptics cPad (touchpad) isnt detected
I'm pretty sure I'm hitting the same bug on a different laptop model. I'm attaching the files requested in the DebuggingTouchpadDetection wikki page. This is on Jaunty, and my touchpad does not work at all. ** Attachment added: laptop http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28137254/laptop -- Synaptics cPad (touchpad) isnt detected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89517 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
