Hmm... I've made some observations on the volume-control's behaviour by
watching alsamixer:
At mute (0% system volume), Master is 0%, PCM is 0%, and Surround is 0%.
System volume goes above 0%, PCM goes straight to 75% and than the Surround
Slider.
System volume goes above 10%, Surround is at 100
Updated to karmic yesterday. Still the same behaviour. Is this a bug
within Ubuntu or is the BIOS messing around??

After reading the above and testing out various bits and pieces I can
confirm it is related to sqlite locks over NFS.
I have not tested with NFSv4 and still use NFSv
AFAIK, this issue still occurs with Compiz disabled or not installed at
all (at least, it affects my system that way).
The temporary fix is to download and run the fixmtrr.sh script [1] as
root (with 'sudo') every time you start up your system. So for example,
if you saved the script in your home

Your debdiff contains only changelog entries, change of maintainer field
and change of build dependency openjdk to default-jdk. Is this correct?
Does this mean all other changes have been merged in Debian? If that is
the case we can drop the openjdk -> default-jdk change and make a sync.
Failed again. Had two windows open with OpenOffice.org 2.4 and was
switching back and forth. Also had a number of other windows open.

Here's the svgs of the 6 folder types with the directory icon centered
on the page, as it were. I've left the filetype labels positioned where
they were and just shifted the folders over a bit.
