[Bug 441872] Re: network-manager disconnects from wirless network

2009-11-19 Thread Seva Gluschenko
Seems like some WLAN cards can't survive continuous NetworkManager's
CTRL-EVENT-SCAN attempts of keeping good roaming. Seems like there can't
be any progress 'til NM authors finally conclude that roaming MUST be
refined seriously (e.g. disabling rescans until signal strength falls
below 60% or so).

2009-11-19 Thread ppietryga
Ho do I reopen this bug? After upgrades from 18th November the same thin
happens.

I really don't care if this is a bug in kdm, something is wrong here
since after changing the default display manager from kdm to gdm (dpkg-
reconfigure kdm) system works and now it is not so unresponding.

I Posted this bug, a week ago and NO ONE has even got the effort to ask
me any additional questions. I was even ready to revert to the upgrades
and run whatever command to give You the output.

This bug was not an instability issue (as is the proposed repository
described) it is CRITICAL!

Below is the aptitude log of the upgrades:

[Bug 413868] Re: NetworkManager adds incorrect routes to VPN gateway

2009-11-19 Thread Seva Gluschenko
Another kind of issue with similar effect is noticed with network-
manager-openvpn which adds route of my LAN to tap device, so that I lose
network connectivity instantaneously. I must either manually issue

# route delete 192.168.1.0

command to restore routing to my local gateway or setup all VPN routes
manually.

[Bug 34376] Re: missing main/debian-installer in repo causes debmirror to fail

2009-11-19 Thread gaZooGA
I can also confirm the bug is still present. I even downloaded the
latest release
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/d/debmirror/debmirror_2.3.1.tar.gz
and it did not help.

** Description changed:

Debmirror can be used to create a local mirror which in turn can be used
for netboot based installation in a LAN.

When you try to create a mirror that includes:

  --dist=feisty,feisty-updates,feisty-security
  and
  --section=main,restricted,universe,multiverse,main/debian-installer

debmirror fails with a "HTTP 404" error.

The "main/debian-installer" section is needed for netboot installations.
- When Feisty was started (or fro that matter dapper, edgy), the main
- /debian-installer section was only present in feisty (but not in fesity-

+ When Feisty was started (or for that matter dapper, edgy, jaunty,

IMHO, this is not an issue with debmirror and creating the "main/debian-

  will resolve the issue.

[Bug 485334] Re: Search field is not functioning properly

2009-11-19 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

2009-11-19 Thread Duncan
Thanks Joshua,

I'm still just feeling my way with Ubuntu Linux and I couldn't find the file
that you referenced so I tried changing the default settings for bandwidth and
then restarted.
Happy to say that Ubuntuone connected immediately and syncronised my files
without any problem.
Seems to confirm the default bandwidth preferences setting as being the problem.
Hope this helps with a full solution for others.

Best wishes

Duncan

[Bug 485665] [NEW] lpr prints text too large, can only fit 47 characters per line

2009-11-19 Thread akirashinigami
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

Release: Ubuntu 9.10

cups version 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1

I expected lpr to print 80 characters per line, but it only prints 47
(plus a small sliver of the next character) per line. Also, lines still
wrap after the 80th character, but only the first 47 characters are
printed on the first line.

To test the problem, I tried printing /etc/passwd. My passwd file contains the
line (without the quotes)
"speech-dispatcher:x:108:29:Speech
Dispatcher,,,:/var/run/speech-dispatcher:/bin/sh".

On paper, the line is printed as (without the quotes)
"speech-dispatcher:x:108:29:Speech Dispatcher,,,"
"sh"

I have attached the diagnostic output from the printer troubleshooting
dialog.

[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-19 Thread Carlin
What is the status of this bug? Above it looks like it was fixed;
"status: Confirmed → Fix Released", but at the top it only says the
status is "Confirmed". If it is fixed, is the fixed package available
now via Update Manager? Or do I have to enable other repos (Testing,
Proposed, et al.) to get the fixed package?

I've used so many different work-arounds that I'm sure what worked and
what didn't. Overall I'd like to fix this properly so does anyone know
of a router or a list of routers that don't suffer from this problem? I
am using a DSL-G604T on wireless.

Can someone give me a few hints on how to properly backtrace a nautilus process?

[Bug 464525] Re: fglrx causes kernel panic on karmic final amd64

2009-11-19 Thread Peter Cordes
oh, and lspci has no interaction with any other installed packages.
It's a very simple program that queries the hardware on the PCI bus in
the standard way. (actually, it asks the kernel, instead of talking to
the HW directly, which is why you can run it as non-root.) All PCI
devices can tell you their name and number without having to know how to
talk to them specially. So don't worry about what you did before
running lspci, it doesn't matter.

[Bug 464525] Re: fglrx causes kernel panic on karmic final amd64

2009-11-19 Thread Peter Cordes
Turns out ATI's installer builds broken .deb packages for --buildpkg
Ubuntu/karmic, and only works if you use --install

I wasn't seeing kernel panics, but I don't use compiz, so I still think this
could be the same bug as I commented on earlier, and eventually reported here:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1695

Note that ati...run --install will just drop files into the filesystem, and
ignores the package manager.
So you'll have /usr/lib/FGL.renamed.libGL.so.1.2 kicking around, for example.
When they fix this, and you go back to the *.deb packages, you'll want to do
locate 'FGL.renamed' | xargs -d'\n' sudo rm -i
or something. And that anything that re-installs any of the fglrx .debs will
overwrite the ones from --install. The only good reason to use --install
instead of building .deb packages is that the .deb packages are broken on AMD64
right now!

I now have fully working 2d and 3d (for i386 and amd64) with fglrx
catalyst 9.11, on my Radeon HD4670.

[Bug 485662] [NEW] Raising from the notification area doesn't bring it to the current workspace

2009-11-19 Thread sillyfofilly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

This only happens when using Compiz.

I have 2 workspaces that I switch between. Initially I start Empathy in
workspace 1, close it and switch to workspace 2. On clicking the Empathy
icon in the Notification Area, the Empathy Contact List window appears
in the Window List (as shown in the screenshot attached), and when I
click on this window, I am switched to workspace 1 where the window is
displayed.

[Bug 468741] Re: Hidden SSID WLAN doesn't work under Ubuntu.9.10 at all

I have the same problem of Lenovo T60, T400, T500.
I can connect the first time to the hidden wlan, but when I try to connect
again using the previous settings the network manager popup has the connect
button disabled. I tried disabling keyring with no success. I have also tested
with Fedora 12 same HW, same release of NM and it works fine, it seems an

Is your hard drive dieing? Check /var/log/kern.log for disk error messages,
and try
sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | less

Or is your disk full? Too bad the error message doesn't include the
errno message, so we'd know if it was an IO error or a disk full.

[Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

2009-11-19 Thread Peter Cordes
Having fglrx installed replaces the open-source libGL with ATI's libGL,
so you can't have both at once.

$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/libGL.so*
libgl1-mesa-dev: /usr/lib/libGL.so
libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
diversion by xorg-driver-fglrx from: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
diversion by xorg-driver-fglrx to: /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa
xorg-driver-fglrx, libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

Removing fglrx removes the diversions, putting the mesa version back.

I see you already fixed your "i810" -> "intel" problem.

I've retitled this bug to what it's really about, and removed the hw-
specific and regression tags. This package has always worked this way,
by moving aside the mesa libGL. The NVidia binary drivers work the same
way. And it's a "dll hell" problem, not a hw-specific problem at all.

This could either be marked as invalid, or left around forever to mark
this as a known issue. Unless /usr/lib/libGL is replaced with a wrapper
library that can use whatever's available, I don't see how this could
ever be solved. I think it does belong assigned to fglrx-installer,
because it's replacing libGL with a libGL that doesn't support mesa
anymore.

That sucks that a system with heterogeneous GPUs, some of which use
non-mesa drivers, can't do 3D on all heads without a chroot or ld.so
tricks/env vars.

[Bug 485660] [NEW] internet browsers refuse to go to the URLS i direct them to

2009-11-19 Thread remz
Public bug reported:

Often and at random whenever I type in a URL, or follow one, i find
myself not at the page inteded.

for example, instead of going to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ I'll
find myself at a random page, for example, a google branded one
informing me that "/ubuntu could not be found on this server" or for
awhile there, trying to get to facebook i would instead get directed to
the Google homepage.

used to use ubuntu back in the hardy days without any troubles, this has come

[Bug 191225] Re: ubuntu won't run on Dell machines with a PCI video card installed

2009-11-19 Thread IDT Monkey
I have this exact issue in Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10. When I add Nvidia
geforce2 mx200 PCI video card (into any/all slots), the computer will
not boot and give a kernel panic. I have attached a screen snippet.
Ubuntu runs fine without the nvidia pci card. My computer is a CPS D610
(Dell Channel Partner Solutions whitebox).

[Bug 483415] Re: Gnome crashes on web page load

2009-11-19 Thread AusIV
I have to disagree with the assessment that this is not a security
vulnerability. This bug that allows arbitrary web pages to crash an
entire Ubuntu session. This may not allow privilege escalation, but it
can certainly lead to data loss if users have any unsaved documents open
while browsing the web. If this vulnerability were deliberately
exploited, Ubuntu desktop users could become the target of denial of
service attacks.

If a web server had a bug that made it subject to denial of service
attacks, I assume it would be considered a security vulnerability. Why
is the same not true of a web browser?

[Bug 158017] Re: nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access

2009-11-19 Thread SamFreilich
After a little investigation, it seems gnome-keyring-d _isn't_ dying on
hibernate, at least not always. So either it's dying sporadically for
some reason, or there's some other reason why that line in gnome-
screensaver's PAM config (which should unlock the default keyring)
doesn't prevent network-manager from thinking the keyring is still
locked.

- Mark Shuttleworth's comments from the mailing list:
-
- "The position is final for 9.10 but can certainly be reconsidered for
- Lucid.
-
- The factors that need to be considered are:
-
- * fitting things into the corner is most aesthetically pleasing
-
- * the "synchronous" notifications (like brightness and volume) are
- fixed in size
-
- * the async notifications (IM's etc, things that happen elsewhere, not
- in response to a keypress) are variable sized and can grow vertically
-
- * sliding things around when something else grows is really bad, it is
unpredictable and frustrating for a user trying to look at the thing
- that suddenly moves, so:
- - synchronous should not be below async (so that it does not have to
slide down)
- - the bottom right corner doesn't work (because then async has to grow
"upwards")
-
- * the top right corner has a lot of stuff there - window decorations, tabs,
tab controls (new tab, close tab etc) and in many apps, a search input. So even
though the look-through and click-through is *cool*, it's
- still better not to put async right into the top right corner
-
- For 9.10, two positions were considered and tried:
-
- In both cases, we put sync above and async below, to avoid sliding
- problems. We put them on the right hand side of the screen, as that's a
- less-used area.
-
- In the first case, we used the midpoint of the right side of the screen and
placed the notifications there, with sync above and async below. It seems
slightly odd to have them "hanging in space", but they conflict
- with far less content there. This was the plan for 9.10. However, when it
landed, there were a lot of complaints saying that folks didn't like it "out of
a corner".
-
- As a compromise, we moved to plan b, which was to put them in the top right,
with sync above. That means that the common case, with async notifications,
appears to leave a "gap". But it also avoids the worst overlaps with things
like window and tab controls, and usually also the
- search bar.
-
- That's where we settled for 9.10. For 10.04 I would like to revisit the
midpoint of the right hand side. I would not want to rehash old territory, so
please factor in the above in proposing new ideas. I'm of
- the view that this decision involves at least one ugly compromise no matter
which way it goes, and am happy to make the call so far (i.e. happy to be the
one with the thick skin).
-
- If there is an implementation which avoids the issues and is sane, I'd
- love to include it.
-
- Mark"
+ Also , To maintain a respectful atmosphere, please follow the code of
+ conduct - http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct/

[Bug 438846] Re: Weather monochromatic icons are needed

2009-11-19 Thread Gabe Gorelick
A lot of people have been talking about the inconsistency between the
new monochromatic icons and the old color ones (see bug #430277 and bug
#476170 for example). However, from bug #430277, it appears that the
humanity devs decided to only go with the monochromatic icons for system
apps like volume control and network manager. That's probably why
weather icons aren't included.

[Bug 485581] Re: Please merge le (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2009-11-19 Thread Fabrice Coutadeur
Hi Franck,

And thanks for working on this :-)

The merge seems good: the only point that you should make better ins the
changelog:
- you should mentioned what changes are kept like this:
Merge from debian testing(LP: #485332), remaining changes:
- ...
- You also mentioned that you cleaned the debian/patches/series files, but it's
actually not true: you only added the patch to the list
- Do not mention that you changed the maintainer in debian/control

Otherwise, that's good :-)

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 158017] Re: nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access

2009-11-19 Thread SamFreilich
Both /etc/pam.d/gdm and /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver contain:
authoptionalpam_gnome_keyring.so

However, only the former contains:
session optionalpam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

That's how it should be according to the documentation:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam

Is gnome-keyring-daemon supposed to be killed on hibernate? If that's
the case, then it should be sufficient to append auto_start to the end
of the auth line in /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver, since that pam module
checks if the keyring daemon is already running and doesn't start it
again if it is.

[Bug 484260] Re: package bcmwl-kernel-source 5.10.91.9+bdcom-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: package bcmwl-kernel-source is already installed and configured

2009-11-19 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Visibility changed to: Public

** This bug is no longer flagged as a security vulnerability
