[Bug 503396] Re: canary mismatch on efree()

2010-01-09 Thread Hal
Another episode of this happened last night, about 4.5 hours after
rebooting to install the new kernel. This is a much shorter timeframe
between episodes. I don't know if this is a fluke or something else.

Same pattern though: the exact same line in the exact same file on the
same site. Again, I've removed sushosin. Hopefully this helps.

[Bug 502262] Re: autofs4 doesn't timeout cifs mounted shares

2010-01-09 Thread kja999
I had tried autofs5 before to try and resolve without success.
This time I purged autofs first.

I kept the delivered version of auto.master and added my one line to it (the
difference from my previous attempt was not to remove the +auto.master line).
Restarted and the mount umounted after the default 5 mins.

So yes, autofs5 works for me now!

2010-01-09 Thread quixote
I currently don't have winbind installed, so there's nothing relevant in
syslog (as far as I can see, which isn't very far!). Which steps should
I follow?

Install winbind, get the syslog, or
install winbind, start the service, get the syslog, or
install winbind, start the service, try using apt-get, get the syslog,

or??

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

This bug was fixed in the package samba - 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3

samba (2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3) karmic-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/samba.if-up: allow NetworkManager as a recognized address
family... it's obviously /not/ an address family, but it's what gets
sent when using NM, so we'll cope for now.

samba (2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.2) karmic-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/samba.if-up, debian/rules: add an if-up.d script for samba to
try to start nmbd, if it's not running because /etc/init.d/samba ran
before the network was up at boot time. LP: #462169.

[Bug 505301] [NEW] pubkey login stoped working

2010-01-09 Thread LimCore
Public bug reported:

Client: Ubuntu 9.10
Server: Debian Lenny

This may be a bug in ubuntu client or in debian server.

SSH pubkey was working normally.
I today tried to passwd -l one of the users. After that time I noticed ssh
pubkey login stoped working.

New account was crated on server (new user) with allowed pubkeys, but he
is still not working as well (even though he was never passwd -l or
nothing)

ssh pubkey works to root
ssh pubkey fails to any other user, including new user. Users is in AllowUsers

grep -i root /etc/ssh/sshd_config

[Bug 505297] Re: package clamav-base 0.95.3+dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-01-09 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thanks for your report.

From the log:
Setting up clamav-base (0.95.3+dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04) ...
id: clamav: No such user
chown: invalid user: `clamav:clamav'
chown: invalid user: `clamav:clamav'
install: invalid user `clamav'

It looks like you've lost the clamav user. That's quite odd. Any idea
how your clamav user got deleted? Did you install clamav from source,
ppa, other distrib, ... ?

To workaround this situation, open a terminal and run :
sudo adduser --system --no-create-home --disabled-password --disabled-login
--shell /bin/false --group --home /var/lib/clamav clamav

And then:
sudo apt-get -f install

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

2010-01-09 Thread Micah Gersten
On second thought, this isn't the correct upstream as the reported here
is asking for /var/log/auth.log logging and according to upstream that
should already be done. The upstream bug was for client notification of
the issue which isn't really possible as described upstream.

Dear BackupPC

Your PC (localhost) has not been successfully backed up for 14616.3 days.
Your PC has been correctly backed up 1 times from 0.1 to 14616.3
ago. PC backups should occur automatically when your PC is connected
to the network.

If your PC has been connected for more than a few hours to the
network during the last 14616.3 days you should contact IS to find
out why backups are not working.

Otherwise, if you are out of the office, there's not much you can
do, other than manually copying especially critical files to other
media. You should be aware that any files you have created or
changed in the last 14616.3 days (including all new email and
attachments) cannot be restored if your PC disk crashes.

Regards,
BackupPC Genie
http://backuppc.sourceforge.net

Logs contain dpkg messages from installation, mail logs and two entries in
popularity-contest.

Any suggestions?

The attached trivial patch applies the wish I described above,
it informs more why authorized_keys is not being used.

The patch is tested for all error conditions it should report, both with
default LogLevel INFO, as well as with DEBUG3.

Below detaild explanation what it does - and results of test.

It needs debug1 level to show conditions that are typical (missing
authorized_keys), and it logs usually conditions that look like errors
(i.e. .ssh/authorized_keys exists, but is inaccessible)

Examples of what will be in log for various use cases conditions:

rm .ssh/authorized_keys
Jan 10 05:22:48 lcwood sshd[15934]: debug1: unable to open public key file
/home/rafal/.ssh/authorized_keys

chmod 000 .ssh/authorized_keys
Jan 10 05:19:26 lcwood sshd[15763]: authorized_keys ERROR: permission denied
for opening user rafal authorized keys /home/rafal/.ssh/authorized_keys!

chmod 000 .ssh/
Jan 10 05:21:08 lcwood sshd[15817]: authorized_keys ERROR: permission denied
for opening user rafal authorized keys /home/rafal/.ssh/authorized_keys!

mv .ssh .ssh-2
ln -s .ssh .ssh
Jan 10 05:26:40 lcwood sshd[16088]: authorized_keys ERROR: Can not access user
rafal authorized keys /home/rafal/.ssh/authorized_keys - Too many levels of
symbolic links (errno=40)!

And with option (/etc/ssh/sshd_config)
  LogLevel INFO
only the error conditions thes ones with ERROR are loged, since they are
undexpted.

No, that bug is about gnome-screensaver-command --poke being broken. our
patch to mplayer (which was rejected upstream, BTW) simulates keypresses
on its own.

upstream mplayer just doesn't disable gnome-screensaver *AT ALL*.

- xorg (7.5+1ubuntu1)

[Bug 443235] Re: changing the wired network profile, doesn't work

2010-01-09 Thread Flemming Bjerke
Incidentally, when I select automatic DHCP addresses only in the manage
connection window wireless-tap, and I insert opendns ip-addresser, dns
does not work either. The ip-addresses do not turn up in
/etc/resolv.conf.

This and a number of other bugs in (kde) networkmanager are so serious
for everyday practical use. I know at least 5-6 programmers who just
laugh of nm because it so hopelessly buggy. They won't ever bother about
writing bug reports because this is too far out. They just use other
programs such as wicd. As I have written in another bug-report, it
doesn't work for HUAWEI modem either. But, since I made a simple script
for wvdial, it works EVERY time. Calling the importance of these bugs
low is just out of proportions. It is so critical that even clever
programmers avoid using the program on their laptops.

I hope the developers soon will fix these absolutely critical bugs and
test networkmanager properly.

[Bug 505077] [NEW] Don't use Ubuntu Windows installer to create dual boot

2010-01-09 Thread Arjan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I have used the Ubuntu Windows installer from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-wubi to create a Ubuntu installation
next to my Windows Vista install. I have used all default settings.
Ubuntu alarms for security updates, which I -in trust that it nows what is good
for my system- install.
Now I had already for two times that I could not boot Ubuntu anymore after such
an update. After selecting 'Ubuntu' it showed only a grub prompt. I don't know
what it is, but that's why I report it here.

I then had to re-install Ubuntu, therewith LOOSING ALL MY DATA!

As I cannot access Ubuntu I cannot tell you any of the difficult details
you most probably want or need to know. The only thing I recall was that
every time the system crashed something like 'kernel-with a lot of
numbers' was in the updated packages list.

Last crash happened 2 days ago 2010-jan-07. Last re-install was 1 or 2
months ago.

I am not sure if this way of reporting is of any help to all you good
people who work hard to improve Ubuntu, but for none computer experts
like me these experiences unfortunately make me reconsider to switch to
Ubuntu.

Success!

[Bug 486960] Re: Brasero disk burner won't get past Preparing to write.

2010-01-09 Thread series8217
I also have this problem in 9.10 with Brasero 2.28.2.

I inserted a blank CD-R into my drive, right-clicked on an ubuntu iso
image, and clicked write to disc. The Brasero - Burning CD dialog
then appears, and hangs at Preparing to write with the progress bar
bouncing back and forth.

[Bug 505085] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon extensive disk usage

2010-01-09 Thread cheoppy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Upon login to Gnome and waking up the laptop from sleep the
gnome-settings-daemon is extensively reading something from the hard disk. I
watched it by iotop, tried to figure out what does it open by lsof and
readahead-watch, but I only found some screensaver files and gnome-libs. I have
no clue what is it looking for.
It's really frustrating when I have 10 minutes in the morning to read my emails
and I have to wait 5-6 minutes for gnome-settings-daemon to finish it's
something before I get use my computer normally (normally means that I can
launch programs in a sensible time).
If I kill gnome-settings-daemon, of course the problem is gone so as my gnome
theme making it a not really working workaround.
The problem also existed on Jaunty, now on Karmic too, how could I track it
down and find out what causes this behaviour?

[Bug 469507] Re: Usability issue in hard disk failing dialog (Part 2)

2010-01-09 Thread Willie
I second this. I came across this bug report because I got the same
error message, and couldn't figure out what icon it was talking about.

I'm a long time Ubuntu/linux user (command line). Though I havn't used
gnome or kde in 3 year.

Your average user would get really confused at that message.

So I agree, instead of:

Click the icon to get more information.

It should be something like:

Click the icon in the notification area on the top right of your screen
to get more information.

[Bug 458703] Re: GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 still required for some dialogs

2010-01-09 Thread Micke Karlsson
The workaround GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 makes scrolling in the Package
Manager in Eclipse 3.5.1+repack~1-0ubuntu3 go very slow, using Ubuntu
9.10 with the latest updates. Removing this line from /usr/bin/eclipse
makes the scrolling fast, but breaks the Update functionality as
described in the bug description.

My workaround is to start Eclipse with GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 only when

[Bug 122389] Re: gtk-window-decorator crashed with signal 5 in g_logv()

2010-01-09 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Minor correction to my comment - I was misreading the glxgears output,
the figure stated is number of frames in 5 seconds, not frames per
second. Still, it's within the normal range for my hardware.

That aside, Compiz works fine under Gentoo, with the same hardware, same
driver version, and same xorg.conf as under Ubuntu.

[Bug 449783] Re: [Xubuntu Karmic] Pulseaudio doesn't save volumes when rebooting

2010-01-09 Thread AlexRou
Hi i found the solution to all sound muting problems this is because
alsa mutes the sound when it exits and also if pulseaudio is installed
it only exits after alsa meaning when alsa mutes the volume pulseaudio
in turn saves that value thus it is mute after every boot

i found the solution here http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556971

in case u do not understand

edit /etc/init.d/alsa-utils with mousepad or some other editor and find
the following lines

esac
card_OK $TARGET_CARD || log_action_end_msg_and_exit $( [ ! $2 ] ;
echo $? ; ) none loaded
store_levels $TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1
mute_and_zero_levels $TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1
log_action_end_msg_and_exit $EXITSTATUS

change  mute_and_zero_levels $TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1
to  #mute_and_zero_levels $TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1

thus disabling the muting and saves all your troubles

if does not work then:

sudo chmod 777 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
alsactl store

set alsactl restore to load on startup if it is still mute

[Bug 352732] Re: [jaunty, karmic] Sound muted after boot

2010-01-09 Thread Olli Niemikorpi
I discovered #38 and #77 methods in Karmic. #77 works as confirmed
earlier. #38 doesn't work solely, but that method works together with
#77 (actually I'm not sure whether #38 method has any action to Karmic
sound settings). #77 seems to be an easy way to get audio unmuted in
Karmic, at least for me and for some others that have reported here in a
way like that..

BTW: For me, method #77 doesn.t enable drum sound at the beginning.
The login sound is enabled as well as master channel set to the previous
shutdown level. Actually, this is not a great problem, but an
interesting dilemma..

[Bug 395239] Re: [karmic] 2.6.31 kernel does not load custom DSDT

2010-01-09 Thread Pietro Battiston
@Krastanov: I don't know how exactly to interpret the following
sentence:

2) Report a specific bug about that DSDT - the current policy is to fix
the bugs in the kernel and NOT loading custom DSDT. That won't change
any time soon..

Do you mean that
- in _specific_ cases the kernel _could_ be instructed to override the DSDT, or
that
- it may try to workaround the DSDT flaws but without changing it directly, or
that
- the bug should be reported just for the sake of information, but not much can
be done about it because DSDT problems are not bugs in the kernel?

It is one crucial point that I'd like to understand, and presumably Tony
and Simone too. Thanks.

Re: [Bug 500686] Re: [i945g] freezes shortly after loading desktop

2010-01-09 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
This is great! That means that there is something between 2.6.31-rc6
and 2.6.31-rc7 that introduced the freezes. I will see if I can get
some test kernels built for you that has only some of those changes.
That way we may find the exact commit that introduced the freezes.

I have compiled a few kernels and uploaded them to
http://www.kvante.info/945freeze/ . If you could tell me which ones
freeze, we should be able to identify the bad commit with one more
round of testing. The 3-digit number (299,300,499) in the file name
indicate the order. If you test 300 first, you only need to test 299
if it freezes and 499 if it doesn't freeze. I'm compiling a 799 now in
case none of them freeze, but I may not be able to upload it right
away.

Once we have found the bad commit, I will get someone on Karmic to
reproduce the findings there. Hopefully things do not change there.

Geir Ove

Harry,

That should work (as long as the dependencies of those packages are
installed).

Note: jockey is not ready yet
