Thanks, I didn't even think of ACL's. Do you know what package
specifically is doing this (gvfs?) and/or how to disable it?

You seem to be using a new "proposed" version of update manager. Go to
the sources options and uncheck the "proposed" option. Then run the
following commands:
sudo apt-get autoremove update-manager
then
sudo apt-get install update-manager
Then see if you can install updates with the manager.
There are no other networks in the area that I can connect to. Don't know if
it matters but my computer has Windows 7 installed too. I can boot into
Windows and install addons in firefox 3.6.11 over the same wireless
connection.

Yes this is the issue. Doing:
alias time=/usr/bin/time
Will override bash's default time and use the binary...
Could be added to the default profile or something?

Gracias por informar del fallo,
I have recently installed 10.10 Desktop on my netbook, which has had
this exact problem before on the past 4 versions of Ubuntu. I am
disappointed to see that after 4 entire versions this problem still has
not been fixed. Ubuntu team, please focus on bugs, then do features.
