[Bug 574665] Re: kvm + virtio disk corrupts large volumes (1TB).

2011-04-08 Thread Richard Neuböck
I've tested the packages (especially qemu*) from lucid-proposed
successfully. This time on a different machine but same hard- and
software setup as before. Intense read and write tests on a 2TB
filesystem ran for 24h without corrupting the filesystem.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 754522] Re: autofs not starting if no nfs-mount in fstab

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Partly because after upgrading grub the old /boot/grub/grub.cfg is
removed, then grub-install called. Leading to grub installed without
loading /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Solution: reinstall grub by issuing command grub-install dev.

The installation script will have to call grub-install dev *after*
update-grub called --- this makes sure, /boot/grub/grub.cfg exists and
being used.

The unknown commands in file /boot/grub/grub.cfg are ignored by grub.
They are setting background and foreground color. This has changed in
grub lately. update-grub should be fixed to use the new syntax.

- reboot

Hi,
the proposed solution (patched sendsigs, libvirt-bin.conf, omit-kvm-vm-pids)
still does not work for me. I have done several tests with sendsigs and found
out that the corresponding pids of running virtuals are successfully included
in the omitpids array in sendsigs. Hovever, the virtuals are still being killed
instantly upon reboot...:( Any ideas?

[Bug 747090] Re: wrong return address sometimes pushed for INT in kvm (not qemu)

2011-04-08 Thread Serge Hallyn
With this kernel patch applied, the problem appears solved for me.

I did first try my hand at a 'proper' fix, in two different ways, but
failed.

The patch probably won't apply 100% cleanly, but only because two of the
lines being removed have changed. Ignore that and make the patch apply.

2011-04-08 Thread John Morrissey
I should also note that the errant behavior has changed a little since
we first observed it; events used to be generated constantly, but now
there are large bursts every ~20s.

Yes, this tissue present in open source driver all time, when I use it (several
recent Ubuntu releases). So it isn`t regression.
And yes again, I think, that it is known issue. I've long been hearing, that
powersave support with ATI cards in open source driver is partial. But fglrx
not work with Unity yet...

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: compiz

When switching focus from one window to another, the target window may
become blank. See the attached screenshot, where I opened two gnome-
terminals and clicked on their titlebars alternately - the issue was
triggered after about 5-10 clicks. I've had this happen on other
appications too, e.g. software-centre, empathy, etc.

Doing shade+unshade, maximizing or clicking away from the problematic
window usually makes the window contents come back. The window remains
responsive to both keyboard and mouse (by the way, in the screenshot
the mouse cursor was an I-beam before I pressed PrtScr).

This is on up-to-date natty, installed from scratch using the daily
image from the 1st of March.

[Bug 754322] [NEW] it's still possible to type faster than unity can search

2011-04-08 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

To reproduce this bug:
1. Type Alt+F2
2. Type gedit (wait a second and then type) /etc/apt/sources.list
3. Gedit opens the requested file.
4. Close gedit
5. Type Alt+F2
6. Type quickly gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and then hit enter
7. Gedit won't even start

It appears to me that if you can start typing the second word before the
dash search recognizes the first word then the search won't work.

[Bug 672953] Re: rsyslog stops writing to fifo on HUP

2011-04-08 Thread Petri Lehtinen
I asked from the upstream author if this is known issue, and he said
this:

Ubuntu drops privileges, but their config is often not really up
to that. Keep running as root for a test and check if the problem
re-occurs. I guess not.

So I commented out the $PrivDropToUser and $PrivDropToGroup lines from
/etc/rsyslog.conf and the problem disappeared. The next thing is to
solve how the config should be made up to dropping privileges to avoid
this issue.

@William Hidden: Have you reported a separate bug for you problem? Could
you try if running as root helps to your issues, too?

[Bug 754327] [NEW] Unity should ignore trailing

2011-04-08 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Since I was using Unity on Natty before we had Alt+F2 functionality, I
got used to typing commands to be run with an at the end so that I
could still run other commands from the terminal. Unity should discard
this final since it is meant for the command interpreter, not the
program that is being called.

Testcase:
1. Alt+F2
2. Type gedit
3. Enter, gedit should not open ~/ but should just open a new unnamed file

[Bug 754331] [NEW] java crashed with SIGABRT in ContiguousSpace::block_start_const()

2011-04-08 Thread Alex Bell
Public bug reported:

I was working with netbeans when it closed and error occured.
I don't know if this bugs are connected but when I edit my code in netbeans and
then run it, some times netbeans stops to apply changes(when I run my program
it runs without changes I've recently made like from some cache or something).
When it happens no error mesage shown. It's VERY inconviniant and affecting my
job VERY much.
On 10.04 with netbeans 6.8 this bug is absent.
I'll continue to test and report about 11.04 and hope this bugs will not be
present after release.
Sorry for my poor English, I'm trying hard.

Re: [Bug 753072] Re: yelp docs not about ubuntu natty

2011-04-08 Thread Matthew East
On 7 April 2011 17:46, Kyle Nitzsche kyle.nitzs...@canonical.com wrote:
 I do wonder about translations.

It's a valid concern. At present, any approach we take is likely to
result in untranslated documentation, unless we just put out the
documentation which we released for Ubuntu 10.10. If we update that at
all, there will be gaps in translations because there is so little
time left before the release. This will always be a significant gap
because of the number of changes required to account for the move to
Unity. If we reuse upstream Gnome content, the translation gap is
likely to be greater, but we will be able to reuse upstream
translations to the extent that these are available (this is at an
early stage at present - http://l10n.gnome.org/module/gnome-user-docs/
- but will no doubt continue).

We will however be able to update translations after the release.

We could choose to only release updated documentation (even in
English) after the release, and build translation time into that.
However it seems to me that having updated documentation in one
language in time for the release (if that is possible) is better than
no languages. Bottom line is that we are not in an ideal situation and
it is a question of damage limitation.

[Bug 754334] [NEW] unity launcher does not retain netbeans application

2011-04-08 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When I:

1. Run netbeans-7.0rc1 manually from gnome-terminal
(/usr/local/netbeans-7.0rc1/bin/netbeans)

2. After it finishes running, I choose 'Keep in launcher' from the
netbeans application icon in the launcher.

3. Log out and back in again.

... the netbeans application is no longer in the launcher.

I would expect it to still be in the launcher.

line 99, in _write_to_disk
with open(DATA_FILE, w) as data_file:
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'$XDG_HOME_DATA/zeitgeist/datasources.pickle'

This is telling us a few things:

1.) the crash happens when handle_exit() is called, this function is
called when the daemon recieves a SIGHUB or SIGTERM signal, means if the
systems wants zg to shut down. (apport will try to report this crash on
the next session start, which makes people think this crash happen
*while booting*)

2.) If you try to write to a certain location in python, and the parent
directory of this location does not exist at this point, an IOError with
[Errno 2] No such file or directory: [...] is raised. This indicates
that $XDG_HOME_DATA or $XDG_HOME_DATA/zeitgeist does not exist for the
bugreporters when the systems wants zg to shut-down.

3.) All bugreporters are having their $HOME (or parts of it) encrypted
(EcryptfsInUse: Yes). This *could* be the reason for this bug, *maybe*
the encrypted dir (and thus $XDG_HOME_DATA) get un-mounted before the
system wants zg to stop.

So this leads to a simple question: How do we want zg to behave if it is
impossible to write the data to its DATA_PATH (which is in most cases
$XDG_DATA_HOME/zeitgeist)? We are talking about these files atm:

 1.) activity.sqlite
 2.) datasources.pickle
 3.) blacklist.(pickle|json)
[4.) extension specific files, like the fts index]

IMHO three of them are easy to handle. We should not care about 4.) at the
first place, it's up to the (3rd party) extensions to do the right thing, but
we have to tell extensions authors what we think is the best they could do. If
the datasource registry fails to write its config file on shutdown it does not
really matter, as its data is written on every change to this file anyway. We
should just ignore this error on shutdown and log a warning. If config can not
be written when AddTemplate or RemoveTemplate dbus method gets called we should
log the error, and return the error over dbus, but not let the daemon crash.
The requested config changes should not have any effect. Some goes for
blacklists.
I'm not sure how to handle the activity log here. Data gets written to this
file (sqlite3.connection.commit()) as a result of dbus calls, for which we
should log this error, revert in memory changes and send an error over dbus.
But we are also writing to this file on start/shutdown of the daemon, which is
not an explicit user action. We should log the write error in this cases and do
the best to tell our users which kind of actions were not logged properly.
As a future step we could also try to shutdown the daemon before the DATA_PATH
becomes unavaiable.

@Mikkel, Siegfried, Seif, et all. Any comments on this topic?

[Bug 752789] Re: Natty needs to bundle 2.4.1 or data loss occurs when network is down

2011-04-08 Thread Tom Chiverton
if you cant alter the version shipped then, why not bring over the very small
patch into your 2.4.0 version ?
I disagree with the overall charaterisation of the bug - this is a very popular
application, though I realise the focus is on Unity and GNOME. While not a
security problem, you wouldn't ship an email client that moved all your mail
out of folders and into the inbox if your printer is unplugged would you ?
That's the same metadata loosing scenerio.
There's never been anything in the release notes about backing up obscure files
in the .kde directory before - take it there will be this time then ?

[Bug 747323] Re: should not wait the key unpress to display lenses

2011-04-08 Thread Sam SmSpillaz Spilsbury
Right, implicit keyboard grab fiasco. The action only gets terminated
when you release the key in this case. However the upstream change was
rejected because it is too risky, so I'm not sure what to do about this
one.

I'm pretty sure the design here is supposed to be this:

super - show launcher regardless
super - held, show launcher, do NOT show dash or places, show shortcuts
super - press and release, do NOT show shortcuts, show dash and places

[Bug 744267] Re: CCSM should be installed by default

2011-04-08 Thread EricDHH
Take a look at the window placement, at most systems all programs jumps
fullscreen directly into your face. This behaviour is only configurable
in ccsm. With latest unity patches most programs lacks visibility of
their right windowborder. The unity panel left move the forced
fullscreen windows to the right out of the screen. Configurable in
ccsm. or we get some other simple configuration tool for that.

Re: [Bug 660089] Re: nullmailer should not directly conflict with lsb

2011-04-08 Thread Todd Vierling
On Mon, Apr 4, 2011 at 8:44 AM, Nick Leverton n...@leverton.org wrote:
It still seems to be the case, however, that the -bs option for SMTP
mail submission is mandated by LSB.  Nullmailer doesn't do it by design,
so the conflict is genuine and not likely to go away without some work.

Ubuntu has already violated this with the introduction of
lsb-invalid-mta, a MTA script that always fails, including on -bs.
It was created to provide something as a dependency of the lsb
metapackages, which would not build up unchecked mbox files on systems
that are (ostensibly) workstations without local mail.

Additionally, ssmtp (and one other, I think, but which one escapes me
at the moment) does not support -bs, but is not listed as conflicting
with lsb. I took this as a hint that the conflict was not actually
necessary on nullmailer, either.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to work on a 'real'
implementation of the feature; I needed it for my workstation at
$dayjob, and created my own ~suffixed dpkg without the conflict. I
offered the conflicts change solely for real-world practicality.

[Bug 754341] [NEW] Gnome desktop does not show icons

2011-04-08 Thread Rok Lenardic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 about 5 days ago, things went well.
Even though I could not log in with the Unity as the desktop, I was able
to continue with the Ubuntu Classic option which inlcudes gnome desktop.
Then, 3 days ago I updated using the update-manager and the login theme
and the desktop theme changed, to the worse since no icons are being
shown (see attached screenshot).

I've been updating ever since hoping it would resolve but it has not so
i'm filing this bug.

This might be a similar bug but since there's no details I decided to file a

[Bug 746023] Re: No sound on omap4

2011-04-08 Thread David Henningsson
A new update was posted to me through email a few hours ago.

This seems relatively safe from regressions: the only thing that is now
called for all cards is snd_use_case_mgr_open. It would be
preferable if this was proactively selected, e g through a udev rule or
through a module parameter passed on through module-
udev-detect to the alsa card module.

This has not changed in the version posted, comment remains.

 - It would be great if all the new ucm functionality was in a separate pair
of .c and .h files. That would make it easier for us to pick
up patches to the alsa-card.c file from upstream. I also believe upstream
 would appreciate that separation.

This has improved.

 - pa_log is used extensively, should be pa_log_debug, pa_log_info to
avoid annoying syslog messages.

This is ok now although it seems like every pa_log has just changed to
pa_log_info.

For the jack detection code, that's currently not finished. The
current code doesn't add anything of value to the end user,

It is unclear to me whether the new version adds value or not. Some
things might have improved, but there is still no card matching, and
there will still be calls to ucm functions even for non ucm cards.

that part is more invasive to current code and so if we decide to merge it I
strongly recommend to keep it disabled by default and
make a module parameter to module-udev-detect to enable jack detection
 explicitly.

This has not been considered, recommend not to take the jack detection
part for now.

In addition, the new version has three new patches about namereg_fail,
without any explanation as of what they would solve.

Summary:

UCM profile patches (OK):

0001-alsa-make-visible-profile-functions.patch
0002-alsa-add-proplist-ucm-data.patch
0003-alsa-add-ucm-data-structures-and-calls.patch
0004-alsa-add-support-for-ucm-profiles.patch

Namereg patches (Not OK - No reason given why this is needed or what it
would improve):

0001-alsa-sink-source-Use-the-namereg_fail-module-argumen.patch
0001-module-alsa-card-New-argument-namereg_fail.patch
0001-module-udev-detect-When-loading-module-alsa-card-use.patch

Jack detection patches (Not OK - still not finished and too invasive at
this part of the cycle):

0005-alsa-add-jack-detection-support.patch
0006-alsa-add-hook-calls-for-jack-insertion-and-removal.patch
0007-alsa-load-jack-detection-module.patch

Might be needed for compilation on our current version of PulseAudio (OK
if needed):

UCM-decibel_fixes-compilation-error-on-PA-0-9-22.patch
UCM-undefined-references-pa_xxx.patch

[Bug 729074] Re: dynamic quicklists are not working

2011-04-08 Thread Olivier Tilloy
@Joaquín: a bug report can be used to track an issue in several
projects. In that case, the issue was affecting both unity and unity-2d.
It was fixed in unity, hence the status change and changelog entry
above, but it is not fixed in unity-2d yet. This is unfortunate but
don’t worry, it will be fixed soon. Be patient, and keep up with the
valuable feedback ;)
