[Bug 774852] Re: Postfix 'local' crashes

2011-05-07 Thread Albrecht Dreß
Hi Clint:

Asking Google about this issue, I found some complaints from Gentoo
users related to glibc 2.13 and pre-linking [1]. However, the prelink
package is not installed on my box, and installing it doesn't change
anything. It might have been a build issue, though.

An other source might be the fact that the PowerPC is a big-endian, but
I doubt that this is the source, as I *never* had any problem with
Postfix in the past, neither with Ubuntu, nor with Yellowdog or Fedora I
used in the past.

Thanks, Albrecht

I couldn't reproduce this with a simple kvm guest on i386 natty host
(64-bit hardware). I'll try mimicking your networking setup, as one of
you panics suggests a netfilter+bridge issue (though the other did not,
so I'm not optimistic).

[Bug 510940] Re: Can't handle filenames with spaces

2011-05-07 Thread Adam Reviczky
It is highly recommended, that all input files, i.e. the ConTEXt source
and other included files such as image files, have only the letters a–z,
digits and dashes in their names, that is in the names of their full
paths, otherwise you can easily get into problems. Especially the
characters *, ?, the space character and some more are known to cause
problems, sometimes because of ConTEXt itself (internal pattern
matching), sometimes because of issues with the underlying operating
system. The dot ‘.' is somewhat special: it's used to separate the
suffix from the rest of the file-name, but at other places in the path
it can cause trouble just like ‘*' or ‘?'.

This is IMHO a Won't Fix.
As a workaround you can try context instead of texexec, seem to work on
your example, but no guarantees.

Another update. Rebooted again (always hopeful that it will solve
itself!!!)

I ran the a sudo dpkg --configure -a in Yakuake terminal and got the
following:

Don't know if you understood from the logs - but I forgot to mention that this

Cheers.

I am having this problem in Natty Narwhal, too. It was working fine in
10.04 32-bit, but when I did a fresh install of version 11.04 32-bit, I
started having problems. Unlike some of you, however, I am able to run
Unity fine on my GeForce GT 220... but not any 3D applications. I tried
some suggestions from some people who claimed to have fixed it, but
nothing worked for me. My nvidia_current driver is ... activated but
not currently in use

[Bug 527267] Re: Application Indicators too wide

2011-05-07 Thread CyrusCT
Now that I have the patch implemented in 11.04 Natty, I find the
following: Indicator Applet Application Menu is also affected by the
patch:

For the Ambiance and Radiance themes, this is problematic since the
patch removes the spaces between the text, drastically reducing
readability.

For other themes, where the patch only represents an improvement for
Indicator Applet and not a fix, the portion of the space/gap that is NOT
eliminated is necessary to retain good readability for Indicator Applet
Application Menu.

This demonstrates that the true nature of the bug is that Indicator
Applet is using a padding/spacing/gap methodology that is inappropriate
for Indicator Applet, but is appropriate for Indicator Applet
Application Menu. Hopefully this will clarify the fact that the bug is
NOT with the themes, but with the Indicator Applet, and maybe if we're
lucky, the bug will finally get assigned to somebody who is developing
Indicator Applet.

Now if I can just manage to use one or less items in Notification Area,
I will have something I can live with in the meantime.

Currently running: Ubuntu 11.04 Natty on Dell Inspiron 1420n, Franken-HP media
center, Samsung Q1 UMPC.

[Bug 565233] Re: Wine inconsistent behavior

2011-05-07 Thread Jonathan Marsden
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 14335 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/14335

The duplicate status of this bug seems incorrect.

#144335 is about nautilus executing too many things.

In contrast, #565233 is about cautious-launcher (a) not displaying its
messages in some environments, and (b) being more restrictive than the
relevant policy requires.

While the supplied patch by VestniK solves the not displaying its
messages piece of this issue, nothing has yet addressed the is more
restrictive that required part, as far as I can see.

The specification at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/Policies
#Execute-Permission%20Bit%20Required is:

Applications, including desktops and shells, must not run executable code
from files when they are both:
lacking the executable bit
located in a user's home directory or temporary directory.

cautious launcher checks whether the file is under /usr/ or /opt/
instead of checking whether it is in the users home dir or in a
temporary file area. Is there a good reason for this?

In particular, allowing files mounted under /media/ would handle the file is
on a CDROM case much of the time.
Better still would be a check for whether the file is under the users home dir
($HOME) or in a temporary directory (under /tmp or /var/tmp ).

I can code that and provide a debdiff -- would such a change be accepted
and useful?

[Bug 769270] Re: Unity displays titles of last closed window

2011-05-07 Thread Andrew
After investigating this a bit more, it looks like this only happens when the
GConf key /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop is unchecked. In this
situation, closing the last open window by any of the following methods results
in the title persisting in the panel:
 - Clicking the X button of an un-maximized window
 - Pressing Alt+F4
 - Clicking File ▸ Quit
The problem never happens after clicking the X button of a maximized window,
or when the show_desktop key is checked.

I tried returning to 10.10 after the kill switch proved permanent in

Could it be that something is set in the BIOS? Or could it be in my

[Bug 779316] [NEW] Ensure reviews continue to get submitted and ratings don't weight towards low end

2011-05-07 Thread Aaron Peachey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

See bug # 716435 as a starting point. I'm adding reference to an email
exchange that has occurred between the software-store-developers group.
With an upcoming UDS session to discuss what's next for the RnR
functionality, I thought this would be a good issue to add for
discussion.

I've added the key parts of that email exchange to this bug report as

[Bug 779316] Re: Ensure reviews continue to get submitted and ratings don't weight towards low end

2011-05-07 Thread Aaron Peachey
*** From aaronp 1/3/2011:
Once someone has installed an app via USC, when do they get the opportunity to
review it? In my own experience, once I've installed an app, I'm generally not
viewing it again in USC unless I'm uninstalling, so I would never review it.
So, even without prompting users to review apps upon removal, I think our
reviews will naturually pull to the negative side just because users aren't
necessarily going to take the time to review apps they have installed.

My proposed solution:
Upon opening USC we currently have X recommendations for you. I think we
should have something similar here like You recently installed X applications
and haven't reviewed them yet. Click here to help out others by giving your
opinion
Clicking could then take you to the history of installed apps where the user
can invoke a review on any app they have installed (or removed I guess)
We would only bother them with this lobby screen prompt for apps that have been
installed over a week or so ago (to give them time to try it before reviewing)

2011-05-07 Thread Aaron Peachey
*** From nzmm 1/3/2011
You raise good points and i like the proposal.

I just wonder, if i am the user and i am being asked to review, say, a
list of 10 apps i have removed and/or installed, how would we present
the review dialog in a way which wouldn't be too burdensome to step
through for each app? This could easily become a chore and put people
off reviewing the apps.

Moreover, if i couldnt be bothered reviewing the apps, I would prob get
annoyed after a while if i couldnt dismiss the lobby message. In this
context people could perceive it as a nag.

Perhaps you would want to back the lobby message up with non-
intrusive/subtle button in the applist which brings up the review
dialog.

[Bug 779316] Re: Ensure reviews continue to get submitted and ratings don't weight towards low end

2011-05-07 Thread Aaron Peachey
*** From aaronp 1/3/2011
I definitely think we would need to give the user the option to 'never ask me
again' in regards to the lobby message. Once they are aware that they can
review the apps via the history screen, it's really up to them as to whether
they ever want to do it or not.

You make a good point about the time it takes to review, especially if
there are quite a few apps. I guess it comes down to when the user wants
to review them. I generally only open Software Centre when I want to
specifically install or remove something (well...before I started
helping to develop it!) which means I have a task in mind and the review
would be a diversion, and 10 reviews in a row would be a significant
diversion. Given I'm community minded, if I noticed the lobby screen
reminder and had a minute to spare, and has been using a recently
installed app recently, I'd probably review it, but that's just me.

However, I think if we could make it simpler/faster to submit a review,
we should have done so already.

I think the user needs to cherry pick the installed apps they want to
review and manage their own time in this regards, and the lobby screen
message is just a way of gently reminding them that they can contribute
by reviewing.

Maybe it should ask you to review something that you've had installed
for at least a week, *and* that you've used recently.

I just wonder, if i am the user and i am being asked to review, say, a

...
That's easily solved: don't mention ten applications, just suggest
reviewing one particular application. Then the next time USC launches,
suggest a review of one other particular application.
You ran Darwinia last Thursday. Would you like to _review it_?

Moreover, if i couldnt be bothered reviewing the apps, I would prob get
annoyed after a while if i couldnt dismiss the lobby message. In this
context people could perceive it as a nag.
Maybe. Or maybe the interface for turning review suggestions back on
would be even more of a distraction. It would depend where it is.

[Bug 779318] [NEW] screen session reacts badly when logging out/in of desktop

2011-05-07 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

1. Install Ubuntu with encrypted home.
2. Login.
3. Open a terminal, and start a screen session (screen).
4. Log out.
5. Login.
6. Resume the screen session (screen -RD).
7. Open a new screen (^Ac).

What happens (the new screen opens zsh in /):
22:50 holizz@koma:/%

What should happen (the new screen opens zsh in ~):
22:50 holizz@koma:~%

For some reason, logging out and logging back in again, causes new
screens opened to open in / rather than ~. I presume this has something
to do with the ecryptfs volume being unmounted when you log out.

[Bug 241206] Re: Gnome Screensaver does not activate reliably

2011-05-07 Thread Robert Lange
Under Maverick, I experienced no problems with the stock screensaver.
Unfortunately, with Natty I have experienced a regression to the fade
to black and then back to desktop issue whenever I use caffeine to
disable the screensaver, and then sometime later use it to re-enable the
screensaver. I am reapplying my patch from comment 21, and will report
whether that fixes the situation.

[Bug 778445] Re: Package name conflicts with chromium-browser

2011-05-07 Thread Gabe Gorelick
It's called chromium because the game was the only thing named chromium
before the browser came around. Now that there are two programs in the
archive with that name, it is confusing. But it has to point to
chromium-bsu so that it doesn't break any existing packages that depend
on it (although I'm not sure if there are any, and if there are they
probably could be easily migrated). chromium is now only in dapper and
hardy, so as soon as those reach end of life, I think it should be easy
to then make it point to -browser. It's also not a big deal for users,
since if you just search software center for chromium, it's pretty
obvious what is what.

[Bug 767192] Re: Wireless flaky on Acer Aspire 5100 after installing Natty

2011-05-07 Thread Tommy Trussell
plugged in wrt54gl AP running a recent version of Tomato (my usual AP is
a Netgear WNR3500L running stock firmware).

booted 2.6.39-020639rc6.201105050227

went through the procedure:

1. Disable networking in the notification area
2. Run 'sudo ifconfig wlan0 up'
3. Run 'sudo iw dev wlan0 scan'
4. Run 'sudo iw dev wlan0 connect -w SSID', using the SSID of the open AP
5. Run 'sudo iw dev wlan0 disconnect' to disconnect if #4 was successful.

(I repeated step 3 until it showed something.)

In this run step 4 worked (the laptop connected to the open AP) on the
first attempt.

[Bug 779323] [NEW] Xorg reboots with non-fglrx driver

2011-05-07 Thread lavinog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H with embedded ATI Radeon HD3200
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD3650

Without fglrx installed, the system would reboot as soon as X is started
(before login screen)
This occurred on the live cd, however enabling all of the options in the F6
menu allowed the live cd to boot into the 2d gnome.
I then installed it to the hard drive thinking that I could try various
configurations.

The most interesting thing is that booting into the recovery console and
selecting failsafeX causes the system to boot as well.

I removed the video card and and booted with the on board card and the same
problem existed.
I also tried the ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/ppa to see if there was a newer driver,
however I do not recall any changes.

The solution was to install the fglrx driver.

I had a thread on the forum about this while I was trying various things:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1751760

This bug was filed with ubuntu-bug while using the fglrx driver, let me
know if there is anything that is needed.

[Bug 774207] Re: [Natty Intel 945GME] No desktop effects (kwin 100% cpu)

2011-05-07 Thread Joe Caputo
Confirmed same behavior here -- desktop effects disabled, yet glxgears
gives 35 - 40 fps.

32-bit, Dell Inspiron e1505, Intel 945GM/GMS/GME Express. Running from
Live CD, since the last time I upgraded before trying it out, I got
burned.

BTW, can anyone here recommend a good, stable version of Kubuntu to run
with this chipset? 9.10 - 10.04 killed me with Intel graphics bugs in
the new X.org driver architecture so I rolled back to 9.10, and I
haven't been able to figure out if it's stabilized yet. Is 10.10 OK for
Intel 945GM graphics?
