If this is the case, I agree it's not a great ideal for servers - but also not an unreasonable default for the platform as a whole use case. I agree with this. But the default should be different for servers and desktops/laptops. I haven't checked for other virtulisation methods, but I imagine it is similar. It is easy enough to provide a chosen networking model, so I'm not fully convinced this is a valid bug. The existence of virbr0 convinces the Xen startup script, in the default configuration, not to do its own networking arrangements. Instead, since there is already a bridge, it causes all the VMs to use it, on the principle that if there is a bridge it should probably be used. I agree the default of nat is appropriate for desktops and I feel quite strongly it should not change there. The default for servers is probably better as non-nat (though this could be debated), as this bug suggests. However having different behavior depending on the type of system it is would likely cause confusion. Perhaps it would be appropriate to add a preseedable debconf question to allow proper setup of the bridge for servers. This could be of priority 'medium' so desktops don't get prompted, but server environments (which would arguably use preseeding more often) can set debconf as part of installation. Admittedly, this is not perfect, but might help. In oneiric, I just did qemu-img -L 10G -n kvm1 schroots dd if=oneiric-vm.img of=/dev/schroots/kvm1 and then changed the libvirt definition of the oneiric-vm vm to have the following disk section: disk type='block' device='disk' source dev='/dev/schroots/kvm1'/ target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/ /disk And the host came up fine. I did not manually try fdisk+debootstrap. If anyone wants to seriously work on this, please come to #debian-cli on irc.oftc.net and work with the CLI libraries team there. As our snapshot is from 2009, I don't know how possible it would be to extract patches from git which fix the 2.10 compatibility issues, but people are more than welcome to try and I'll happily sponsor any working patches. Having said that, I guess it would be easier to just package a new snapshot, but the main problem there is that the upstream git repository is not DFSG-free; for Debian and Ubuntu we need to remove all precompiled .dll/.exe/.whateverelse files and make sure that everything is built from source when the package is built. That's the main reason why it's not been fixed yet: nobody has stepped up to do this cleaning work. There's a get-orig-source target in the debian/rules file which would be a good starting point but it needs a little bit of freshening up.
