[Bug 878122] Re: Package samba 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.3 failed to install/upgrade duing upgrade from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10
After completing upgrade, I believe this is related to distribution update process. The reason is probably with wrong order or wrong choice of Perl packages being upgraded during do-release-upgrade. I ended up with upgrade containing multiple conflicts, one of them being Perl 5.10 left over with some packages missing due to dependency on Perl 5.12 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/878122 Title: Package samba 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.3 failed to install/upgrade duing upgrade from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager-core/+bug/878122/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Public bug reported: This is an updated version to the bug report #872443 After de-installation for reinstall with web-server integration (apache2) backuppc failed to install, even the manual deletion of all installed files and folders did not succeed in correct installation. This report was generated after enabling apport as tasked by Crichton in bug #872443. I hesitate to translate all German text within the attachments, but will at least do for the error message. The German ErrorMessage tells: Sub process installed post-installation-script returned error code 1 In bug #872443 the following tags were added: package-install-segfault Having gone through the flies on my own, I guess the de-installation process doesn't include the deletion of user and group accounts created during the first installation neither it removes authorisations to specific processes. We should aim to target some complex Ubuntu server deployment scenarios for regular automated testing during the release cycle. This could be implemented either in the cloud or using virtualization; ensemble and cobbler+puppet might form part of the solution. 2) Automated Boot testing As we make changes to the boot/shutdown sequence of the server, and migrate init.d scripts to upstart jobs, we need some continuous integration testing to make sure it continues to work. We should take advantage of the automated testing framework to install, reboot, shutdown, start, remove, and repeat with all packages that are changed. We should also automate this testing with all of the available tasks on the install CDs. In addition, we should collect metrics on boot time and how each package affects it. hggdh: * we need to test iso install * want to do a single install and create gold copy * need test do-release-upgrade High Level Test Objectives: - a) Deployment Testing: i) ISO Image Proving RAID testing (N.B. OK, I have feedback from my ISP. Their kernel does not include dmi, on the basis that it's been deprecated since 2005! [Bug 869553] Re: Apparmor prevents KVM tunnelled migration
Simon, That's correct. Without testing it, this patch looks fine. Ideally this would be handled better via the security driver framework, but the latest git seems to indicate this isn't implemented yet, so this would be fine for Precise. So getting this into Ubuntu, the patch should be tested, submitted upstream and applied to the Ubuntu development release (Precise). Once that is done, it can be backported to earlier releases as part of the SRU process. [Bug 807153] Re: named does not shut down after service bind9 stop
This looks like the bug I want to report. I find that shutting down bind9 is erratic: sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not. This is a common result of shutting it down at the command line: codebrian@$ sudo service bind9 stop * Stopping domain name service... bind9 rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused/code I need to send a break (usually with CTRL-C) to get past this. I often have difficulty shutting down or rebooting my system, as it often hangs early in the process; bind9 seems to be among the first services to be shut down, so I suspect it is the root of that problem as well. I notice that Matthias pointed out that he is using IPv6 and dnssec. I am using an IPv6 tunnel and have configured bind9 for dnssec validation; I had purged and reinstalled bind9 in trying to troubleshoot this problem, and it didn't hang on restarts before I re-enabled dnssec validation. That was only a few restarts; with an intermittent problem, it's hard to be sure. I will try disabling dnssec validation for a few days and see if that helps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bind9 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/807153 Title: named does not shut down after service bind9 stop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bind9/+bug/807153/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools
First of all, open-vm-toolbox, is a transitional package. The GUI version no longer is in the program/package, only the CLI/cmd version still exists. I thought of a possibly better solution, which may be a win-win scenario. If we split up the packaging for GUI and CLI version, it might cause headaches for a lot of people (including myself). I am going to assume that most people who use Ubuntu on a VMware product will be using the Desktop version, not the server. Although, some of them use the Tools that comes with the program. Where I go to college, for the Linux I class they now use Ubuntu (they used used Fedora, when I took the class), the GUI version. For Linux II, they use SUSE Enterprise Server, GUI version, most of the time. SOLUTION: Keep the open-vm-tools package as it is. But a create a new source packaging, just for the people who run the server/CLI version of Ubuntu. If I had to do this on my own (like I did for what's in the Oneiric repo), with limited knowledge of this stuff (although turning open-vm- toolbox into a transitional package was a learning experience, and I'm more wiser). I personally would create a new source package, and just strip all the GUI stuff out of it, and rename the packages. Doing this would keep the package stable (at most), I think. I personally want a second opinion from either Evan, Serge, or Dave (the latter 2 have sponsored my uploads (for Maverick and the current Oneiric/Precise packages)). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to open-vm-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/604998 Title: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/604998/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools
I am going to assume that most people who use Ubuntu on a VMware product will be using the Desktop version, not the server. Sorry, but this is not the case at all - VMware's primary products are their server offerings, and those of us running linux servers outside of an education setting do so overwhelmingly with no desktop environment. While it's obviously up to Canonical and the community, I don't believe that making the server distribution a second class citizen by forcing use of a source package is the right direction to take just to assuage some potential confusion between CLI and GUI packages. As Client pointed out in June, Software Center will happily point the user to packages containing a .desktop file by default - what's wrong with that? These changes, as well as Evan's in bug #391224, seem to have centered around the assumption that VMware Tools is primarily for GUIs. I'd like to urge you to look outside of your own use cases, please.

You were thinking of VMware Server, while I was thinking VMware Workstation/Player/Fusion. Sorry about that. @David Normally, the open source version of the tools are useful for the testing phase of the release cycle, like Precise is going to be shortly (for Alpha 1). Dmitry, except for one ARM-specific patch, the Ubuntu version already has all of the Debian patches. [Bug 862553] Re: Latest libcanberra update causes Firefox and Thunderbird to crash on startup
Andreas, I don't see why a problem with libsoftokn3.so has something to do with this bug, which was about libcanberra. You should report a new bug for your problem. Maybe you can work around it by trying what is suggested in comment 31 at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=91962#c31.
