2011-10-20 Thread Radosław Łoboda
After completing upgrade, I believe this is related to distribution
update process. The reason is probably with wrong order or wrong choice
of Perl packages being upgraded during do-release-upgrade. I ended up
with upgrade containing multiple conflicts, one of them being Perl 5.10
left over with some packages missing due to dependency on Perl 5.12

For cgroup-bin, just to make sure I'm understanding right, should it do

[Bug 878898] [NEW] package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: Unterprozess installiertes post-installation-Skript gab den Fehlerwert 1 zurück

2011-10-20 Thread Viking
Public bug reported:

This is an updated version to the bug report #872443

After de-installation for reinstall with web-server integration
(apache2) backuppc failed to install, even the manual deletion of all
installed files and folders did not succeed in correct installation.

This report was generated after enabling apport as tasked by Crichton in
bug #872443.

I hesitate to translate all German text within the attachments, but will at
least do for the error message.
The German ErrorMessage tells:
Sub process installed post-installation-script returned error code 1

In bug #872443 the following tags were added: package-install-segfault

Having gone through the flies on my own, I guess the de-installation
process doesn't include the deletion of user and group accounts created
during the first installation neither it removes authorisations to
specific processes. The re-install process doesn't check for this.

Hope this bug report helps to solve the issue in the package.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-iso-install-testing] Ubuntu Server ISO Testing

2011-10-20 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard set to:
Scope: Installation of Ubuntu Server from ISO (amd64 and i386)
Coverage:
  Default Ubuntu Server
- LVM Install
- Non-LVM Install
- Multi-LVM Install - GAP
- RAID Install - GAP
- iSCSI root Install - GAP
  Minimal Virtual Server
  Current Tasksel
Bind9 Server
LAMP
Mail Server
OpenSSH Server
PostgreSQL Server
Print Server
Samba Server
Tomcat Server
Virtualization Host

Objective:
Verifcation that
 a) Single server installs in simple deployments from ISO work OK
 b) Bootstrap deployments in Data Centre deployments work OK

Method: ubuntu-server-iso-testing project
Current Frequency: Daily on production of new ISO images for development release

Questions/Proposals:
[james-page] Should we also be re-testing the released ISO's on a daily basis
to ensure that -updates are not breaking installs.
[james-page] What additional tasks are we going to add in Precise? Orchestra
stuff for example would need to be added to the list.
[james-page] We need to check if failsafe has been triggered across all
installs as this is indicative of a bug.

Work Items:
Update framework to support missing test cases: TODO
Write Multi-LVM test case: TODO
Write RAID test case: TODO
Write iSCSI root test cases: TODO

 b) Verification that cloud-unit is working OK in images

Method: ubuntu-server-ec2-testing project

Questions/Proposals:
[james-page] We should be performing a daily test of ec2 images across all

[james-page] We published new AMI's for most existing Ubuntu releases - but
they don't get verified as good

  UDS-O Session Notes:

  1) Complex Deployment Testing

Alot of Ubuntu server deployments are much more than an ISO install on a
single node; however this is pretty much the limit of the automated ISO
  testing that we currently complete.

We should aim to target some complex Ubuntu server deployment scenarios
for regular automated testing during the release cycle.

  This could be implemented either in the cloud or using virtualization;
ensemble and cobbler+puppet might form part of the solution.

  2) Automated Boot testing

As we make changes to the boot/shutdown sequence of the server, and
migrate init.d scripts to upstart jobs, we need some continuous
integration testing to make sure it continues to work. We should take
advantage of the automated testing framework to install, reboot,
shutdown, start, remove, and repeat with all packages that are changed.
We should also automate this testing with all of the available tasks on
the install CDs. In addition, we should collect metrics on boot time and
  how each package affects it.

  hggdh:
   * we need to test iso install
   * want to do a single install and create gold copy
   * need test do-release-upgrade

  High Level Test Objectives:
  -

  a) Deployment Testing:

  i) ISO Image Proving

RAID testing (N.B. For raid testing also see:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-o-software-raid
and/or etherpad until blueprint updated)
  LVM testing
  Multipath and encryption

Existing ISO testing framework should deal with this.

  ii) AMI Image Proving

Existing ec2 testing framework should deal with this.

  b) Package Removal Testing:

  - install services
  - start services
  - check services
  - stop services
  - uninstall services
  - re-install same services
  - start re-check services

  c) Phase 2 - Service Proving

Deployment of service and pluggable testing

Deploy through orchestra and/or ensemble - which would allow testing of
recipes and formulas as well (+1)

  Framework required for executing tests once deployment complete;
mcollective could be used to distribute and execute tests; maybe still
  use python unittests;

  d) Automated Boot Testing:

Minimal install - startup and shutdown OK
Full install - startup and shutdown OK
  Complete upgrade and then re-test.

  e) Upgrade Testing:

  Lucid-Maverick-Natty for example.

Need to catchup with mvo in this area - suspect some sort of gold-copy
  type setup might make sense.

  f) Recovery Testing:

  Recovery Mode Testing:

  Complex Deployment Scenarios:

Wiki + Database + Memcache + Load Balancer
Bridging and bonding of network interfaces
  Networking File Systems
  Openstack Deployment test
  Launchpad
Samba + LDAP or Kerberos Backend
  Backup solutions.
  Ruby on Rails stack?

  Requirements:

  Remote testing of services.

Possibly ask community to donate resources for optional tests

[Bug 869553] Re: Apparmor prevents KVM tunnelled migration

2011-10-20 Thread Simon Déziel
@Jamie, I assumed that your advise to not modify the .files profile
directly was because this file is regenerated on the VM startup. I have
attached a patch to have virt-aa-helper add the required rule to the
/etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-UUID.files. Let me know if that's not
the correct/best way to handle this. Thank you.

** Patch added: adjust virt-aa-helper to allow tunnelled migrations

[Bug 874350] Re: Segfault: Failed to get udev device for syspath '/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id'

2011-10-20 Thread Marcus Bointon
OK, I have feedback from my ISP. Their kernel does not include dmi, on
the basis that it's been deprecated since 2005!

They've worked around this problem by installing the natty libvirt
package which does not suffer this problem.

I guess a backport request would be appropriate.

Sorry to trouble you, please close this now.

[Bug 869553] Re: Apparmor prevents KVM tunnelled migration

2011-10-20 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Simon,

That's correct. Without testing it, this patch looks fine. Ideally this
would be handled better via the security driver framework, but the
latest git seems to indicate this isn't implemented yet, so this would
be fine for Precise.

So getting this into Ubuntu, the patch should be tested, submitted
upstream and applied to the Ubuntu development release (Precise). Once
that is done, it can be backported to earlier releases as part of the
SRU process.

Thanks for your patch!

[Bug 807153] Re: named does not shut down after service bind9 stop

2011-10-20 Thread Brian Vaughan
This looks like the bug I want to report. I find that shutting down bind9 is
erratic: sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not. This is a common result of
shutting it down at the command line:
codebrian@$ sudo service bind9 stop
 * Stopping domain name service... bind9
rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused/code
I need to send a break (usually with CTRL-C) to get past this.

I often have difficulty shutting down or rebooting my system, as it
often hangs early in the process; bind9 seems to be among the first
services to be shut down, so I suspect it is the root of that problem as
well.

I notice that Matthias pointed out that he is using IPv6 and dnssec. I
am using an IPv6 tunnel and have configured bind9 for dnssec validation;
I had purged and reinstalled bind9 in trying to troubleshoot this
problem, and it didn't hang on restarts before I re-enabled dnssec
validation. That was only a few restarts; with an intermittent problem,
it's hard to be sure. I will try disabling dnssec validation for a few
days and see if that helps.

[Bug 876130] Re: Incorrect operatingsystem reported in puppet run

2011-10-20 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

Facter will report the wrong operatingsystem when queried from a puppet
  agent run.

  To demonstrate this:
- $ irb
- irb(main):001:0 require 'facter'
- = true
- irb(main):002:0 Facter.version
- = 1.5.9
- irb(main):003:0 Facter[operatingsystem].value
- = Ubuntu
- irb(main):004:0 Facter.clear
- = nil
- irb(main):005:0 Facter[operatingsystem].value
- = Debian
- irb(main):006:0
+   $ irb
+   irb(main):001:0 require 'facter'
+   = true
+   irb(main):002:0 Facter.version
+   = 1.5.9
+   irb(main):003:0 Facter[operatingsystem].value
+   = Ubuntu
+   irb(main):004:0 Facter.clear
+   = nil
+   irb(main):005:0 Facter[operatingsystem].value
+   = Debian
+   irb(main):006:0

This has been fixed upstream in Facter 1.6.0+.
- % RUBYLIB=`pwd`/lib irb
-require 'facter'
-true
-Facter.version
-1.6.0
-Facter[operatingsystem].value
-Ubuntu
-Facter.clear
-nil
-Facter[operatingsystem].value
-Ubuntu
+   % RUBYLIB=`pwd`/lib irb
+    require 'facter'
+    true
+    Facter.version
+    1.6.0
+    Facter[operatingsystem].value
+    Ubuntu
+    Facter.clear
+    nil
+    Facter[operatingsystem].value
+    Ubuntu

For the upstream bug see: http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/7670
+
+ ==
+ IMPACT:
+ * Puppet users who make use of a puppetmaster and pluginsync can be bitten
by this bug. After the master has synced plugins down to clients, facter
clears its fact database. Some facts are inconsistent after clearing (see
example above). Later puppet runs of modules and configuration that make use
of facter facts will produce unexpected outcomes and system configuration.
+
+ ADDRESSED:
+ * This bug has been fixed upstream and merged into Ubuntu Precise. The fix
has can be cherry picked and applied to oneiric series and backported to
earlier series.
+
+ REPRODUCE:
+ * The irb test above can be used to reliably test whether a version is
affected or not.
+
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
+ * The chances of regression are minimal. The upstream patch cherry-picked
into the oneiric branch contains a fix and modification to unit tests. Previous
versions contain a minimal patch that only contains the fix and does not touch
unit tests as they did not exist in those versions.

[Bug 732953] Re: can_connect function inside ec2.rb always return false

2011-10-20 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: facter

the can_connect function in ec2.rb always return false.
I modified the code as follows and it seems to have fixed the issue:
  Before (Line 9 in ec2.rb):  Timeout::timeout(wait_sec) {open(ip, port)}
  After: Timeout::timeout(wait_sec)
{open(http://#{ip}:#{port}/latest/meta-data;)}

After that change, the module seems to work properly in EC2 instances.
+
+ ==
+ IMPACT:
+ * Any puppet configuration that relies on EC2 related facts will fail
entirely or fail to propagate the correct configuration on nodes running lucid,
maverick, and natty.
+
+ ADDRESSED:
+ * This was fixed upstream and in ubuntu as of oneiric. The proposed patch
fixes argument handling in a test of the ec2 metadata service.
+
+ REPRODUCE:
+ * Launch any AMI of an affected series, 'apt-get install facter' and 'facter
| grep ec2' should report none of the ec2 related facts.
+
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
+ * The potential regression is minimal as the fix enables functionality that
was previously broken.

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

2011-10-20 Thread Nate Muench
First of all, open-vm-toolbox, is a transitional package. The GUI
version no longer is in the program/package, only the CLI/cmd version
still exists.

I thought of a possibly better solution, which may be a win-win
scenario.

If we split up the packaging for GUI and CLI version, it might cause
headaches for a lot of people (including myself).

I am going to assume that most people who use Ubuntu on a VMware product
will be using the Desktop version, not the server. Although, some of
them use the Tools that comes with the program. Where I go to college,
for the Linux I class they now use Ubuntu (they used used Fedora, when I
took the class), the GUI version. For Linux II, they use SUSE
Enterprise Server, GUI version, most of the time.

SOLUTION: Keep the open-vm-tools package as it is. But a create a new
source packaging, just for the people who run the server/CLI version of
Ubuntu.

If I had to do this on my own (like I did for what's in the Oneiric
repo), with limited knowledge of this stuff (although turning open-vm-
toolbox into a transitional package was a learning experience, and I'm
more wiser). I personally would create a new source package, and just
strip all the GUI stuff out of it, and rename the packages. Doing this
would keep the package stable (at most), I think.

I personally want a second opinion from either Evan, Serge, or Dave (the
latter 2 have sponsored my uploads (for Maverick and the current
Oneiric/Precise packages)).

[Bug 879052] [NEW] user dir binding breaks on nonexistent user

2011-10-20 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

When creating a container with the '-b user' option to the ubuntu
template, if 'user' does not exist, the resulting container will have a
bad fstab causing the container to fail to start. The last line in
/var/lib/lxc/container/fstab then reads:

 /var/lib/lxc/test2/rootfs/ none bind 0 0

the template should raise an error if 'user' does not exist.

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

2011-10-20 Thread Shane Madden
I am going to assume that most people who use Ubuntu on a VMware
product will be using the Desktop version, not the server.

Sorry, but this is not the case at all - VMware's primary products are
their server offerings, and those of us running linux servers outside of
an education setting do so overwhelmingly with no desktop environment.

While it's obviously up to Canonical and the community, I don't believe
that making the server distribution a second class citizen by forcing
use of a source package is the right direction to take just to assuage
some potential confusion between CLI and GUI packages. As Client
pointed out in June, Software Center will happily point the user to
packages containing a .desktop file by default - what's wrong with that?

These changes, as well as Evan's in bug #391224, seem to have centered
around the assumption that VMware Tools is primarily for GUIs. I'd like
to urge you to look outside of your own use cases, please.

I agree with Shane. Desktop users are far more likely to install the
official tools anyway. It's people using servers (in our case, an ESX
cluster) where the open vm tools become very useful.

You were thinking of VMware Server, while I was thinking VMware
Workstation/Player/Fusion. Sorry about that.

@David

Normally, the open source version of the tools are useful for the
testing phase of the release cycle, like Precise is going to be shortly
(for Alpha 1). The is because the newer kernel, that will eventually be
supplied in the release, will fail to compile with the official Tools.

But yes, most users would use the Official Tools.

[Bug 879052] Re: user dir binding breaks on nonexistent user

2011-10-20 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

When creating a container with the '-b user' option to the ubuntu
template, if 'user' does not exist, the resulting container will have a
bad fstab causing the container to fail to start. The last line in
  /var/lib/lxc/container/fstab then reads:

- /var/lib/lxc/test2/rootfs/ none bind 0 0
+  /var/lib/lxc/test2/rootfs/ none bind 0 0

the template should raise an error if 'user' does not exist.
+
+ ===
+ SRU Justification
+ 1. Impact: containers creation can appear to have succeeded, with only
+ an easy to miss warning that user binding failed. But lxc-start will
+ fail due to a bad container fstab entry.
+ 2. Development fix: a small patch to the ubuntu template catches the
+ bad user name early on.
+ 3. Stable Fix: same as development fix.
+ 4. Test case:
+lxc-create -f /etc/lxc.conf -t ubuntu -n l1 -- -b xyz
+lxc-start -n l1
+ where xyz is not a valid user. Creation will appear to succeed, but the
+ container will fail to start.
+ 5. Regression potential:
+If there is an error in the patch, it could cause problems with
+ubuntu container creations.

Calling this low priority because there is an obvious workaround (don't
