[Bug 887599] [NEW] unable to configure or uninstall dovecot-postfix

2011-11-08 Thread Phillip Susi
Public bug reported:

I installed dovecot-postfix, and it failed to configure. The same error
apparently prevents it from being removed as well, so now I'm stuck with
a broken package. The error is:

newaliases: warning: valid_hostname: invalid character 40(decimal):
devserv.(null)
newaliases: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter myhostname: bad
parameter value: devserv.(null)
dpkg: error processing postfix (--configure):

This appears to be because my /etc/hosts file listed the FQDN as
devserv.(null). I have corrected the name but the dpkg scripts still
are using the broken name and failing to do anything, even remove
--purge.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3] Move EC2 mirrors to S3

2011-11-08 Thread Ben Howard
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
  Rationale:
S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and
increase availability for EC2 users.

  Assumption:
    * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges.
    * on-EC2 mirrors have limited bandwidth and thus speeds can be affected by
load
    * S3 has very high availability
    * S3 intra-region bandwidth is free
    * on-EC2 mirrors results in bandwidth charges when users use a mirror
outside the availability zone
    * S3 is extremely fast. Generally speeds to S3 access are near-native
    * Amazon has asked for us to host our mirrors on S3
    * Uploads to S3 are free

A prototyped-S3 mirror will be shown at UDS.

  ___

UDS Example S3 Mirror Example for Oneiric (Mirror will be active until
Wednesday 01 Nov 2011). Mirror is ONLY accessible inside EC2 in US-
  EAST-1.

deb http://repo.utlemming.org/ubuntu/ oneiric main universe multiverse
restricted
  deb http://repo.utlemming.org/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main universe
multiverse restricted
  deb http://repo.utlemming.org/security oneiric-security main universe
multiverse restricted

deb-src http://repo.utlemming.org/ubuntu/ oneiric main universe multiverse
restricted
  deb-src http://repo.utlemming.org/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main universe
multiverse restricted
  deb-src http://repo.utlemming.org/security oneiric-security main universe
multiverse restricted

[ NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS MIRROR FOR PRODUCTION USE. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE,
PROOF OF CONCEPT MIRROR ONLY. ]

  Q. 'LAN' bandwidth access to the region mirrors is currently free already,
no? -- Daviey
  A. All upload and intra-zone transit is free.

  Q. How do you keep people out of EC2 from access?
  A. Bucket policies enable restricting access to the Amazon CIDR address.

  Comments:
  - Can this whiteboard be pre-filed with some examples of how others have
implemented this?
     * AFAIK, there is only one implementation of S3 buckets. Most other
examples that I know of use S3 as a storage backend, while having an EC2
instance front the S3 storage. Amazon Linux AMI is the only pure S3
backend/frontend solution.

  - How would this work?
    * There are a number of ways to push out a repository using existing tools.
s3fuse (albeit rather buggy) allows you to mount a s3 bucket as file system.
s3cmd allows for local to remote synchronization. However, in order to build
something that scales well, you need something that uses multiple connections
and pushes multiple files at once (i.e. threading and boto python library)
     * Example syncronization code can be found at
lp:~utlemming/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the
prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS.

  --

  Examples:
Amazon Linux AMI currently uses S3 for backing the mirrors. The design is
more or less:
  - One bucket per region.
  - Buckets are named off of the DNS CNAME, i.e.
us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

[Bug 820715] Re: sudo poweroff -n within a container just hangs

2011-11-08 Thread Serge Hallyn
@Clint,

hmm, no I don't remember and can't find it. cjwatson may remember.

@xlyz,

you'll need to at least allow the containers to have mknod in the
container for udev to succeed. (You can do that using the container's
config file). But I was actually suggesting just doing the upgrade in a
chroot as part of initial setup.

It should be possible to automate this as a part of the ubuntu template.
Please feel free to open a bug against lxc to make that happen.

[Bug 887599] Re: funny characters in hostname causes dovecot to fail to configure

2011-11-08 Thread Phillip Susi
It turned out it was the postfix package that was the problem, and apt
was just trying to configure it each time I tried to remove dovecot-
postfix. After purging and reinstalling dovecot it picked up the
corrected hostname and configured correctly.

** Summary changed:

- unable to configure or uninstall dovecot-postfix
+ funny characters in hostname causes dovecot to fail to configure

** Description changed:

- I installed dovecot-postfix, and it failed to configure. The same error
- apparently prevents it from being removed as well, so now I'm stuck with
- a broken package. The error is:
+ I installed dovecot-postfix, and it failed to configure. The error is:

newaliases: warning: valid_hostname: invalid character 40(decimal):
devserv.(null)
newaliases: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter myhostname: bad
parameter value: devserv.(null)
  dpkg: error processing postfix (--configure):

This appears to be because my /etc/hosts file listed the FQDN as
- devserv.(null). I have corrected the name but the dpkg scripts still
- are using the broken name and failing to do anything, even remove
- --purge.

[Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server

2011-11-08 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Okay, so after pushing Byobu for several years as a default command line
experience within Ubuntu, I'm raising the white flag and surrendering
:-(

We released Ubuntu 11.10 and enabled Byobu-by-default in our EC2 cloud images.
Despite numerous compliments and thank-you's, the praise is not universal.
Some vocal users just really despise the feature and are threatening to fork
the Ubuntu cloud community. We've made it as simple as we can to opt out of
it, but that's just not enough for some people.
 * http://groups.google.com/group/ec2ubuntu/browse_frm/thread/2046f97812244952

I've just committed revisions 1728 and 1729 to lp:byobu that approaches
this from the opposite direction -- enabling Byobu lovers an easy way to
ALWAYS enable byobu on launch. As of byobu-4.46, you should be able to
simply add to your local system's ~/.bashrc: export LC_BYOBU=1, and
everywhere you ssh into, that has byobu = 4.46, should launch
automatically. Basically, I've added this code to:

#/etc/profile.d/Z97-byobu.sh:
if [ $LC_BYOBU = 1 ] [ -r /usr/bin/byobu-launch ]; then
. /usr/bin/byobu-launch
fi
true

This could, perhaps, be a candidate for SRU to 11.10, if smoser and
utlemming want to back out the byobu-by-default setting there.

Re: [Bug 820715] Re: sudo poweroff -n within a container just hangs

2011-11-08 Thread Serge Hallyn
Quoting xlyz (820...@bugs.launchpad.net):
@serge: udev and coreutils are already installed in default lucid container.

Of course, but they fail to upgrade because they expect mknod. As I was
saying, and as the blog you reference shows, you can let the upgrade succeed
by adding mknod to the devices access whitelist.

if I add updates repo and just install openshh-server everything is
 fine.

Ok, good.

if I try to full-upgrade, or just try to install udev from lucid-
 updates it throw

 Setting up udev (151-12.3) ...
 mknod: `/lib/udev/devices/ppp': Operation not permitted

yes.

 dpkg: error processing udev (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

the other two packages have just udev as dependency.

yes.

As I say it should be possible to update the lxc-ubuntu template to
create 'lucid-updates' (etc) caches and containers, so that you don't
have to mess with this at all.

[Bug 887449] [NEW] automounted usb drives do not show the active glyph in launcher after opening a nautilus window

2011-11-08 Thread Reece H. Dunn
Public bug reported:

0. Close all existing nautilus/file manager instances.
1. Plug in a usb device that has one or more mountable drives.

NOTE: Ubuntu automounts these drives (my device has two in this case),
opens the drives in nautilus and adds them to the launcher, bringing the
nautilus windows to the front (but see [Bug 887292] -- nautilus windows
from newly opened usb drives don't appear in the menu, but are on the
foreground).

2. Move the mouse over the launcher area.

NOTE: There is now a media player icon for each usb drive that has been
mounted, none of which have the glyph to indicate that there is an
instance of this launcher program running. However, there are for the
Files launcher (aligning with the number of usb drives connected in
(1)).

NOTE: This is confusing to me as Unity performed the jiggling icon
animation for the two usb drives to indicate new items in the launcher
and has the drives listed in the launcher. I would expect that these
nautilus instances would be associated with their corresponding usb
drive.

3. Press the mouse button on one of the usb drives added in (1).

NOTE: The files launcher now has an extra instance indicator (mine is at
3, from 2), while the usb drive still does not have any.

[Bug 872483] Re: laser printer only prints first job correct

2011-11-08 Thread Aurimas Fišeras
It looks like the fix for this bug causes (or makes them more frequent,
Bug #793244) random crashes of CUPS usb backend for us on some printers
(Samsung ML-2015, Bug #887094).

Would it be possible to make a test cups package with a possible
alternative fix from upstream (http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3965)
instead of the current usb-backend-reset-printer-before-printing.patch
fix?

[Bug 887452] [NEW] unity launcher and task switcher don't distinguish between 3 and many instances running

2011-11-08 Thread Reece H. Dunn
Public bug reported:

1. Open one instance of an application.

NOTE: Unity displays an arrow overlay on the center left of the icon.

2. Open a second instance.

NOTE Unity displays two dots (launcher) and wedges (task switcher) --
one per instance.

3. Open a third instance.

NOTE Unity displays three dots (launcher) and wedges (task switcher) --
one per instance.

4. Open a fourth instance.

NOTE Unity *still* displays three dots (launcher) and wedges (task
switcher).

NOTE: This breaks the pattern of one dot/wedge per running instance of
the application. It will be infeasible to do this continually, and 3
instances is a good number to stop at. The problem here is that the user
cannot distinguish between only 3 instances running, or more than 3
instances running.

As a result, there should be a different glyph to indicate more than 3
instances of this application running.

[Bug 887456] [NEW] missing functionality to fully replace padevchooser

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Re: [Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Probably not, but while unsupported, an option to fix at Flash 10.2 or
10.3 until Adobe reintroduce Stage Video (whatever they call it) would
enable low power machines to actually *use* iPlayer, Youtube, Demand5,
4OD and other streaming video-on-Flash smoothly. this is the crux of
the issue. A stopgap... Yes... But a needed one. and much better a
package so nothing breaks when accepting the upgrade to 12.04.

either that or whitelist Totem-plugins for full H264 from the Beeb and
other broadcasters... So nvidia+atom users can actually USE their kit.

- Original message -
Using Flash 10 instead of Flash 11 will break the (probably now
hundreds, if not thousands) of websites that only work with Flash 11,
either because they use features only present in major version 11, or
because they trigger bugs that were fixed in major version 11 (or in
some incremental release after that). Using Flash 10 is therefore not a
generally good solution to the problem of this one website not working.
The goal of making Flash work better for users in general would not be
served significantly by fixing this bug, and the goal of making Flash
work better for users in your specific situation, while it would be
served by fixing this, would not be served particularly well.

That is not to say that this bug should not be fixed. It might well be
the case that there is significant benefit to giving users the ability
and option to choose Flash 10 (packaged for Ubuntu) as well as Flash 11
(packaged for Ubuntu). I am not convinced that this is the case, but I
hope this post should not be taken as an argument against it.

Either the website should be fixed, or Flash 11 should be fixed
(depending on which contains the bug). If the website is fixed, then no
one needs to update anything. If Flash 11 is fixed, the update will
presumably be available to all users of all supported Ubuntu releases,
including Ubuntu 12.04 LTS once it's out (whether the fix happens before
or after its release). This is because Adobe Flash is proprietary and
there is no way for Ubuntu developers to backport just fixes for
security vulnerabilities and serious security/stability bugs, creating
 Ubuntu-specific versions (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates).
Since this cannot be done, updates to Flash in Ubuntu get new features
(and new bugs) as well as fixes for serious bugs.

Have you actually replaced Flash 11 on your system with Flash 10 to see
if that actually fixes the problem on the BBC website?

Also, am thinking of other users as well. And when or if Adobe manage
to get Stage Video/3D/whatever sorted - would prefer to just accept the
 update through Update Manager...

Are you saying you think Adobe will release additional updates for Flash
 10 providing major functionality changes?

 Title:
     [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current
breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

 Status in Ubuntu:
     New

 Bug description:
With Flash 11 current version and package, Adobe stripped out all the
experimental accelerated rendering support for NVIDIA ION and other
NVIDIA chipsets.   While Youtube will happily roll back to software accel
for NVIDIA users, iPlayer won't.   Results seen are   Video
compressed, then tries to expand... then freezes completely, then
iPlayer will not play out video at all - but no issues with audio.

Effectively, iPlayer is completely unusable if on Intel Atom+NVIDIA
equipment running Ubuntu 10.04 and Flash 11.   This is a massive
regression and dealbreaker for British Ubuntu users.

The BBC recently updated their playback client, relying on Stage 3D
logic to present the transport controls as an overlay - interacting
with issues in the Linux version of Flash 11; Windows and Mac have
this acceleration logic, according to their own release notes.

Intel chipsets (reliant on software) are perfectly OK.

Accelerated rendering WAS available in Flash 10.3 and the beta
     versions of Flash 11.

The BBC also now stipulate that Flash 10.1 is the minimum version
required to play content on iPlayer - the only backout Force Install
option offered is Flash 10.0.42 or thereabouts.

Please could you arrange packaging of Adobe Flash 10.3 -

 http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/completion/?installer=Flash_Player_10_for_other_Linux_(.tar.gz)

.. so that a functional backward option is available?

This issue also may help with issues on 4OD as well.

     Thanks

My kit - Lenovo Ideapad S12, Ubuntu 10.04LTS with all updates.

apparently it doesn't yet fully offer all the predecessors functionality

Re: [Bug 522646] Re: return from suspend doesn't restore screen

2011-11-08 Thread Ricard Gelabert
On 11/08/2011 03:11 AM, Bryce Harrington wrote:
pm-utils-1.4.1 appears to include this quirk (as well as a range of
others). The code has changed quite a bit so the proposed patch no
longer applies (and maybe is no longer relevant), however I can't be
certain that it now solves the original issue stated in this bug report.

Could you please re-test oneiric and verify whether the screen restores
 now after resuming from suspend?

Meanwhile, I'm going to optimistically assume this issue is solved.
Please reopen (or file a new bug) if it's still a problem in oneiric (or
 newer).

 ** Changed in: pm-utils (Ubuntu)
 Status: Confirmed = Fix Released

Hi,

mmm... I recall this bug report. It was filed by me some time ago
because of problems with a tecra laptop (hence, I assume, you contact me
now). Bad news is, I recently changed the laptop because the LCD ceased
to work, and the uni where I work provided a replacement (also a
toshiba, but diferent make and model) so I cannot test it, as I don't
have the hardware anymore; sorry about that.

However, if it helps you boost your optimistic assumption, this might
help: long after I reported the bug and found a workaround for it, I
happened to reinstall Ubuntu on that laptop, not with OO, but Natty
Narwhal I think. I don't recall having experienced any lockups after
resuming (not that I tried it often, though), so I'd say NN worked out
of the box. Can't be completely assertive about that, sorry.

Regards,

Ricard Gelabert
