Also:

Several sources suggest that turning odd tso, and perhaps also sg and

Tried this but it made no noticeable difference.

Thanks for your help so far.

[Bug 483928]

2011-11-27 Thread Daniel Richard G.
(In reply to comment #38)
I haven't seen this one before. The text you included indicates that
ssh-keyscan was processing a Protocol 2 key and it should be using the
modified code to do it. Is there any way that you could send me a
 traceback when the failure occurs?

I'll do that, when I'm back in the office. I'll use your patch. (This
was with the stock Ubuntu build; it was just a failure mode that hadn't
been noted here before.)

FWIW - I think the 2: Protocol Timeout part of the message comes
from the remote SSH-2.0-RomSShell_4.62 server because I couldn't find
that text in the OpenSSH source. What is RomSShell?

It seems to be an OEM embedded implementation of SSH... this was
probably a router or something.

[Bug 670289] Re: Laptop won't shut down with rabbitmq running

2011-11-27 Thread total
The problem might be with the rabbitmq service user and lightdm. Lightdm can't
log out because
there is another user still logged in.

If you change from lightdm to use gdm does it help?
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm (select gdm)
- (reboot)

This bug might be related
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/86
although rabbitmq is a system user and they are talking about real users.

Very similar kind of bug has been discussed before. There was also a fix for it:

[Bug 888671] Re: Please merge facter 1.6.2 (main) from Debian testing (main)

2011-11-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package facter - 1.6.2-1ubuntu1

---
facter (1.6.2-1ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian testing (LP: #888671). Remaining changes:
- debian/rules: use what we had in natty; we don't want ruby-pkg-tools
  in main. (LP: #408402)
- debian/control: Continue using ruby + libopenssl-ruby as Build-Depends
even tho Debian has moved to gem2deb (not in main). Move ruby-json to
  Suggests.
  * debian/rules: Use dh_prep instead of dh_clean, add build-arch + build-indep
targets
  * debian/control: Update debhelper Build-Depends to 8, make binary package
depend on ruby1.8 explicitly.

facter (1.6.2-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release

[Bug 670289] Re: Laptop won't shut down with rabbitmq running

2011-11-27 Thread Toby Corkindale
I've been running RabbitMQ 2.6.1 and 2.7.0 for a while on 11.10 (and
11.04) without any of these problems.

I'm not sure what is different in my setup compared to yours, but maybe
we can work it out?

I am running with lightdm, not gdm.

NetworkManager is enabled, but the ethernet is managed via
/etc/network/interfaces instead. (eth0 is bound to a bridge, br0, which
then uses DHCP to obtain an IP. Several virtual machines also bind to
br0)

[Bug 894608] Re: Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2011-11-27 Thread Mike Imelfort
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Installing bridge-utils and then setting up a bridge in
/etc/netwrok/interfaces decimates my netwrok speed. Uninstalling the
package and doing a reboot restores the speed.

This bug was originally posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/861141 but I now realise it is
  bridge-utils specific.

  Hardware:
I have two identical machines (DELL poweredge R815), each with Broadcom
NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe connected via a 10G switch.
Each machine runs 4 socket 12 core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6174 and 128GB
of ram

  Software:
Both machines ar running ubuntu server 10.04 lts Kernels are:
  Linux whitlam 2.6.32-28-server #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 23:57:16 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux
  Linux fraser 2.6.32-28-server #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 23:57:16 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have installed iperf on both machines.

The tests here involve running whitlam as the iperf server and fraser as the
client.
  On whitlam I run:
  bioadmin@whitlam:~# iperf -sm

  On fraser I run:
  bioadmin@fraser:~# iperf -c whitlam -d

  before installation I get:
  bioadmin@whitlam:~# iperf -sm

Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.3 KByte (default)

  [ 5] local 10.168.48.14 port 5001 connected with 10.168.48.13 port 37960

Client connecting to 10.168.48.13, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 110 KByte (default)

  [ 6] local 10.168.48.14 port 49627 connected with 10.168.48.13 port 5001
Waiting for server threads to complete. Interrupt again to force quit.

  [ 6] 0.0-10.0 sec 10.6 GBytes 9.11 Gbits/sec
[ 6] MSS size 1448 bytes (MTU 1500 bytes, ethernet)

  Which is nice.

  Next I run:

  sudo aptitude -y install bridge-utils

and then I add a bridge to the interfaces file like thus:

  FROM:
  # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
  # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

  # The loopback network interface
  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

  # The primary network interface
  auto eth4
  iface eth4 inet static
   address xx.xx.xx.xx
   netmask 255.255.255.0
   network xx.xx.xx.0
   broadcast xx.xx.xx.255
   gateway xx.xx.xx.1
   # dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
   dns-nameservers blah blah

  TO:

  # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
  # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

  # The loopback network interface
  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

  # The primary network interface
  #auto eth4
  #iface eth4 inet manual

  auto br0
  iface br0 inet static
   address xx.xx.xx.xx
   netmask 255.255.255.0
   network xx.xx.xx.0
   broadcast xx.xx.xx.255
   gateway xx.xx.xx.1
   bridge_ports eth4
   bridge_stp off
   # dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
   dns-nameservers blah blah

  And restart networking

  sudo /etc/init.d/netwroking restart

  Which results in:
  bioadmin@whitlam:~# iperf -sm

Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.3 KByte (default)

TCP window size: 1.25 MByte (default)

  [ 6] local 10.168.48.14 port 57001 connected with 10.168.48.13 port 5001

[ 6] MSS size 1448 bytes (MTU 1500 bytes, ethernet)

Note that the connection from the machine with bridge-utils installed
(fraser) to the other machine (whitlam) is not affected. Only the
  connection from whitlam to fraser.

Both machines are fresh installs with nfs-common, iperf installed.
  Fraser also has bridge-utils

Any help is very much appreciated!

[Bug 894608] Re: Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2011-11-27 Thread Mike Imelfort
I just wanted to make sure that I can reproduce this from scratch, for
anyone who's interested...

Fresh install from 10.04.3 CD, choosing openssh-server as the only
extra package

$ sudo -s
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get dist-upgrade
$ aptitude install iperf

...

test network speed - all OK

...

$ aptitude install bridge-utils

...

make changes to interfaces file as outlined above

$ /etc/init.d/networking restart

...

test network speed - slow

...

[Bug 894279] [NEW] cloud-init fails to fetch metadata with OpenStack

2011-11-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Tested the UEC Lucid, Maverick, Natty and Oneiric images with OpenStack
Diablo. When launching multiple (20+) instances at the same time the
OpenStack metadata server becomes quite slow and cloud-init fails to
fetch the metadata due to its short timeout of 2 (3 for Oneiric) seconds
in DataSourceEc2.py. This is an unreasonably small timeout value. I'd
suggest a timeout of 60 secs and 5 retries as the default.

[Bug 880707] Re: [regression] Visible tearing is worse in 11.10 than 11.04, even when Sync To VBlank is enabled, but only when Unity is active.

2011-11-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
With respect to this bug, it is the tearing seen when dragging windows
around when running Unity.

This bug is mainly about the fact that it got noticeably worse in 11.10
compared to 11.04. The precise reason why it got worse is detailed here:
https://code.launchpad.net/~vanvugt/unity/fix-861061-trunk/+merge/82861

So the trigger was a significant increase in latency inside unity's
plugin painting code. The problem has been addressed two-fold:

1. In Unity, resolving the latency regression introduced in Ubuntu 11.10; and
2. In Compiz, improving frame timing so that it is more resistant to latency
regressions in plugins.

I know there are many possible causes of tearing, and I'm not claiming
to fix all of them. But these two fixes are a good start.

[Bug 880596]

2011-11-27 Thread Tempsd
Hi again,

Just wanted to say sorry it took so long - I posted the above reply on
Launchpad on 2011-11-17; bug was made incomplete on 2011-11-20; and my
reply arrived on 2011-11-23 :) Like in the snail-mail days :)

Anyways, I don't really have much to add, except that it looks like the
-app switch was only ever properly working on Firefox 3 for Windows only
... If someone can just confirm if this is the way thins are supposed to
be, that would be great!

Thanks again - and cheers!

New upgrade to oneiric. idevice_id correctly identifies device ID as

unlocked. The instant I unlock it, I get the unhandled lockdown error

So, again, there is significant communication between device and
computer, but the damned lockdown error persists no matter what I
attempt.

I'm quite willing to support any effort to trouble-shoot/debug this
issue, if someone will provice guidance on what I can provide to you. As
I'm apparently not alone in seeing this -256 error (there are several
reports on forums.ubuntu.com and forums.linuxmint.com and on this bug
report).

This has been very, very frustrating. I saw so many reports that the
latest libs in oneiric solved the issues that I today spent the hours
necessary to backup and then upgrade to it. Only to have the exact
() same errors with oneiric that I had with natty.

[Bug 896803] [NEW] xorg crashes on first login with compositing enabled

2011-11-27 Thread Rahul
Public bug reported:

Xorg crashes when I logout and login as a different user from KDM for

This has started affecting me only since Oneiric.

For each such crash, I see the following line in kern.log:

Do you have a stack trace with the crash? Notes turn grey during a sync
to prevent editing. It should only last a few seconds but will happen as
often as you have set your autosync settings.

[Bug 802902] Re: Realtek rtl8187b wireless chipset slow speed

2011-11-27 Thread VPablo
If it is like RTL8187L you need to install drivers because Linux takes
the 8187 generic driver and it does not work properly. Please, download
the driver from here:

http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=1PFid=1Level=6Conn=5DownTypeID=3GetDown=falseDownloads=true#RTL8187B

Unpack the archiver and install it by:
$ sudo make
$ sudo make install

And reboot.

It works for the RTL8187L (that it is not the same card).

Re: [Bug 896726] [NEW] skype chat dies, then can't quit, have to restart

2011-11-27 Thread fcolcord
Initially I installed skype through the Ubuntu store. Then,
researching this bug, I found there was a more up to date version on
the skype download page.

Same thing happens.

Now I have set up this bug I will run the apport command when it happens
again.

Thanks

[Bug 896805] [NEW] Wrong icons for files and folders after first login

Public bug reported:

After logging into an account for the first time after starting the

Logging out and in again solves this problem for the session. Logging

When running the gnome shell preview or glx gears, the display is highly
corrupted. It looks like a bytes-per-pixel issue since the image
appears in three places.

When using the VESA emulation glxgears works just fine, but the bulk of
the gnome shell doesn't. (and I'm limited to 800x600 with no
acceleration)

Fedora 12 has rpms versioned 7.6.0-8 so I assume it is a git snapshot.

But it works OK in 16/16 bpp

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc - add -fbbpp 16 as server argument
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
startx

(not sure how to force gdm to do the same)

 * qemu + vga emulation + glxgears - working fine

 * qemu + vga emulation - still working fine

So it seems that this patch solves the problem, and does not introduce
another bug.

So I'm confident in this patch ;)

Applying the patch, fixed glxgears,

KHTML)) with similar bpp corruptions in image rendering, which are not present

However, according to this report, you are not using the most recent version of
this package for your Ubuntu release. Please upgrade to the most recent version
(3.3.4) and let us know if you are still having this issue.
As well, if reproducible, could you please attach a document that demonstrates
this problem?

Possible, but can't be sure.
Is it possible to find a stacktrace of the crash somehow? Otherwise, I don't
see how a developer can work on this.
If its possible to find a stacktrace, please tell me how. I'll take it up.

[Bug 887776] Re: Dell Latitude e4200 Ambient Light sensor doesn't work

2011-11-27 Thread Alby M
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric staging

** Description changed:

I have a problem with my system, i think it's a kernel issue because
light sensor stop to respond after kernel load.

For example, when i am in the GRUB menu, light sensor work correctly and
i can enable and disable sensor with FN+left arrow, but when kernel
starts to load, without any module loaded (i stop loading to an
emergency shell, so i eliminate issues concerning modules or any other
software, i.e. gnome-power-manager), light sensor stops to work.

I test my pc with a CentOS 5.5 live (kernel 2.6.18) and it's OK, also in
emergency shell, if i try with CentOS 6 (kernel version over 2.6.30) the
issue is present, so i think it's a kernel regression, but i'm not sure.

My collegue with a Dell Latitude XT (it's an older series) has not the
issue, its ambient light sensor works fine.

with lsinput i identify the Dell Wky Hotkeys and if i check with
  /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event6 i read:

scan code: 0x4B key code: unknown

So is this a problem related to dell_wmi?

What can i do to identify the issue more precisely?
