[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2012-07-25 Thread Selene Scriven
I've been duct-taping my way around this issue (and other similar
issues) for years. It's terribly kludgy, but it's simple and effective
and doesn't break on each upgrade:

  /etc/init.d/openvpn start
  while true ; do cp /etc/resolv.conf.good /etc/resolv.conf ; sleep 15 ; done

Or something like that, anyway. I actually run 'vpn up' and 'vpn down',
but the above is how it deals with having too many cooks in the DNS
kitchen.

Public bug reported:

As the Recommends on btrfs has been removed from ceph (due to stability

[Bug 1028981] Re: ceph should Recommend xfsprogs

Mainly because its the recommendation of the ceph team upstream:

  http://ceph.com/docs/master/config-cluster/file-system-
recommendations/

I think the default would still be ext4 (as this does not required a
separate device/filesystem).

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Stefan Fritsch
I cannot reproduce this on Debian unstable with either 2.2.22-9 or
2.2.22-1.

Wild guess: Do you have a per-user process limit configured in
/etc/security/limits.conf ?

If no, it would be helpful if you could provide a backtrace of the process that
curl connects to and hangs. There is some documentation about how to do that
in
/usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/README.backtrace. But the doc is for Debian.
For Ubuntu, the installing of the debugging symbols works differently (maybe
someone else can provide a pointer).

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
As i have written, this is a clean ubuntu install, i did not change any config
files upon mentioned.
/etc/security/limits.conf ist standard config file with no limits inside (only
comments).

I can't figure out how to determine the pid of apache child process that
curl connects to. If you have an idea, please let me know.

Here is some output, that i get with gdb for a hanging apache:

This is basically the same as for the working instance before the crash. The

Any ideas?

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Clint Byrum
This appears to be legitimate, I was able to reproduce it on an HP cloud
instance with the given parameters. The first 1000 actual requests
always finish, but after that all fail.

I notice these kernel messages:
[ 1131.976324] TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 80. Dropping request. Check
SNMP counters.

But I don't think it is related.

I see this as well *sometimes*:

[Wed Jul 25 20:20:10 2012] [error] server reached MaxClients setting,
consider raising the MaxClients setting

But MaxClients is set to 1500 so I'm not sure what that is.

The one difference mod_ssl would introduce would be the use of shared
memory for statistical gathering. So maybe the stats are running into a
shm limit.

I tried raising shmall to 4194304, but that just slowed things down a
bit, it still fails right at 1000. I also tried raising shmmni to 8192,
and that did nothing. Same for doubling shmmax.

On comparing strace's with and without mod_ssl enabled, the problem most
likely lies with shared memory or semaphore opertaions, which only seem
to be happening with mod_ssl. I also tried adjusting the numbers in
/proc/sys/kernel/sem but that did not alleviate the problem.

Also its worth noting that 1000 processes is inefficient for more
reasons than just memory. Context switching at the process level will be
far more expensive than a threaded model. For that reason alone I've set
this to Medium, as its really just not a great way to configure
apache.

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
I could verify getting the same log messages on my system.

This however seems to be not directly related to the problem. I see the
same messages, when testing it on Ubuntu 11.10. But the apache remains
stable and repsonsive on this older version of ubuntu.

I have found some interesting behavior, when using the -k switch with ab to
ensure there are really only the specified amount of processes used and no
process is busy waiting for the connection to close:
$ ab -k -n 5000 -c 999 http://localhost/
all requests will complete without error
$ curl http://localhost/
htmlbodyh1It works!/h1
pThis is the default web page for this server./p
pThe web server software is running but no content has been added, yet./p
/body/html
$ curl http://localhost/
... no answer

so here you can literally see how the connection #1001 (the magic
number, that appeared before) is breaking apache. i think maybe its
some kind of buffer running full?

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
I also agree with you, that this feature has medium importance. I think our
install of apache is not very common. We are running mod_php and as a
consequence relying on the prefork modell, because php is not thread safe. Also
please notice that the presented config was changed to maximize
reproducibility. On our production system we have about 700 processes running
the most of the time, but on peak traffic this number rises to 1000-1200
producing the hanging that i have described.
So while systems with such load may be uncommon, the reported problem is still
existing in the real world. Thanks for paying attention to it!

FYI-

According to flags.py, the metadata endpoint is enabled by default:

cfg.ListOpt('enabled_apis',
default=['ec2', 'osapi_compute', 'osapi_volume', 'metadata'],
help='a list of APIs to enable by default'),

So, on the packaging side we need to ship the filters with both nova-api
and nova-api-metadata (the packages Conflict already due to port
conflicts, anyway).

(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) but it's giving me
1.4.0-1ubuntu1 not 1.4.0-1ubuntu1.1 . I guess it hasn't been placed
there yet?

Thanks,

Aaron

Me too.
I use the Kubuntu 12.4 release repositories.

I tried disassigning the global hotkeys away from amarok and did make custom
hotkeys to the clementine dbus calls.
But Dbus browser tells me it cant find the listed methods in /player in
interface org.freedesktop.MediaPlayer. org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.clementine entrys
are also not usable.

[Bug 1026780] Re: 3.0~rc.4ubuntu4 doesn't honor bootargs from /boot/boot.script anymore

2012-07-25 Thread Paolo Pisati
People who do development change the kernel parameters often to suit
their needs: call it templates or config files, but i'll always need to
tweak them to add debug, to workaround a bug, to enable or disable this
or that feature, etcetc.

And any hardcoded parametrs (like root= in initd) is just a bad design
decision.

[Bug 1028744] [NEW] Dell vostro 1320 wifi switch bug

2012-07-25 Thread Jackson Doak
Public bug reported:

A bug that affects to all vostro 1320s is that the ubuntu detects whatever
position the wifi switch is in as off went you log in.
i.e. if the switch is on when you log in the wifi wont work as the switch
controls the wifi hardware directly as well.

The problem can be fixed with a bios update but this requires you to install
windows(not in a virtual machine) before it will launch.
Is it possible to fix this in ubuntu?

P.S i have fixed this with a bios update this report is simply to raise
awareness.

[Bug 771748] Re: Ubuntu does fsck on every start when using btrfs

2012-07-25 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
A quick work around if the bootup speed is really killing you and since btrfsck
doesn't do much yet.
Please realize this prevents mountall from running btrfsck and this is NOT a
fix.

You can move btrfsck somewhere where you can still use it:
$ sudo mv /sbin/btrfsck /usr/local/bin/

Then make a symbolic link to something like false:
$ sudo ln -s /bin/false /sbin/btrfsck

Also note that if btrfs-tools is updated or reinstalled, you have to do
this again.

Hopefully a full btrfsck will be out soon. Cross your fingers.

[Bug 1028751] [NEW] Crashes on writing metadata if many changes are done.

2012-07-25 Thread Arie Skliarouk
Public bug reported:

I have write metadata into files option checked. If I add a tag to a

then the whole application segfaults.

Here is what I see in terminal after that:

[Bug 1028416] Re: gnome-settings-daemon high CPU usage and keeps overwriting .config/dconf/user

2012-07-25 Thread Marinus
** Description changed:

Unfortunately not much more informations at this time but this is what I
  have.

  1. At some point the gnome-settings-daemon will start utilising about 95% of
one CPU core, iotop will show dconf-services hovering around 3 place and lsof
will show show gnome-settings-daemon using .config/dconf/user.
  2. This has happened five times now every time on a fairly busy system e.g
Firefox and Chromium multiple tab some with active content like flash and
html5, one or more virtualbox machines and a terminal or two.
  3. the first three times were weeks apart but the last two was on the same
day after a reboot for the kernel update.
- 4. sudo kill -9 PID of gnome-settings-daemon restores the system to normal.
+ 4. sudo kill -9 PID of gnome-settings-daemon restores the system to normal.
(Works somtimes)
  5. Afterwards the .config/dconf/ folder will have several user.? files.

If you need me to collect specific information next time let know.
+
+ Happened again but this time no.4 did not work the gnome-settings-daemon was
killed and /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7
-novtswitch -background none started maxing out the one CPU core. After awhile
gnome-settings-daemon restarted and continued maxing out the core.
+ sudo restart lightdm did however bring the system back.
+ sudo restart dbus was tried one time it worked but killed the wifi all my
running program survived at leased allowing me to save and reboot.
+
+
+ Mmm this may have something to do with using a Bluetooth numpad as the bug
started happening regularly this week and only happens during working hours. I
started doing data entry this week in a VM, using the numpad more than normal.
+
+ PS. Is it better or update the bug info here or in the comments?

[Bug 1028754] [NEW] No GUI on gnome-control-center to config a Touchpad on a Desktop

2012-07-25 Thread Alvaro Leal (Effenberg0x0)
Public bug reported:

When gnome-control-center / Mouse and Touchpad is used on a Desktop,
the Touchpad tab is not displayed (only the Mouse one shows). This
made complete sense until recently (Desktops normally don't have a
Touchpad).

However, with new wireless/wired touchpads (like Apple Magic Trackpad,
Logitech Wireless Touchpad, new keyboards with embedded touchpads, etc),
actively supported by Kernel, this is not the case anymore.

If a touchpad is detected, even on a Desktop, wired or wireless, the
Touchpad tab on g-c-c / Mouse and Touchpad should be displayed.

Moreover, the touchpad settings should be expanded and improved. These
devices come with WIndows drivers and software that allows for
2/3/4-fingers gestures, speed/sensitivity, corners-actions, inertia
settings. On Ubuntu (and Arch and other distros), people came up with
udev and keymap based workarounds. But it would make sense to have it in
a GUI for the ordinary users. gnome-control-center / Mouse and
Touchpad seems to be the correct place.

I have already discussed this in Ubuntuforums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12128572#post12128572) and
Brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/29977/). In both cases I
was advised to post this is a bug.

Regards,
Effenberg

[Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

2012-07-25 Thread Paul Coray
Same with us: Kubuntu 12.04, fully patched, FreeNX
0.7.3.zgit.120322.977c28d-0~ppa11 from FreeNX team at launchpad, keeps
crashing Kwin, no matter which version or platform the NX client
(Nomachine) runs on.

This is critical for us, as we are about to roll out an upgrade of all
our terminal servers for our ~200 users at the university library, based
on this combo.

[Bug 1028755] [NEW] Totem-mozilla fails to decode, (display) AVC MPEG4 videos, both online local

2012-07-25 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

As of Totem-3.4.x, AVC MPEG4 videos, (.mov. .mp4, ect.), are not displayed
in browser window though the audio will play.
Reverting to 3.0.2 or in totem-mozilla on 12.04 earlier the same videos are
fine, whether online or local files opened in a browser like Firefox.

Though possibly semi-related to this current open, ignored bug this extends to
files that currently play fine in totem/gstreamer in 12.10, not just the type
affected by the broken bad plugin, so NOT a dupe
Bug 973014

Attached is a simple teartest video that should play fine in a browser,
will so with any totem-mozilla version earlier than 3.4

As far as an online sample .mov's from this site should playback, they don't in
3.4

[Bug 1028681] Re: ghostscript 9.05 fails with preview-latex and auctex

2012-07-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
Error: /invalidfileaccess in --file-- means that Ghostscript is not
able to read one of the input files or to write its output file. The
file in question is probably _region_.prv/tmp30703Qa0/preview.ps as this
file name is on the top of the Ghostscript stack. Moving to auctex ...

If you tghink it is really a Ghostscript bug, please try to reproduce it
by a Ghostscript call from the command line and attch the needed files
to this bug report. Then I will be able to forward it to the Ghostscript
developers.

[Bug 1028761] [NEW] Sync git-annex 3.20120721 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2012-07-25 Thread Logan Rosen
Public bug reported:

Please sync git-annex 3.20120721 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Changelog entries since current quantal version 3.20120629:

git-annex (3.20120721) unstable; urgency=low

  * get, move, copy: Now refuse to do anything when the requested file
transfer is already in progress by another process.
  * status: Lists transfers that are currently in progress.
  * Fix passing --uuid to git-annex-shell.
  * When shaNsum commands cannot be found, use the Haskell SHA library
(already a dependency) to do the checksumming. This may be slower,
but avoids portability problems.
  * Use SHA library for files less than 50 kb in size, at which point it's
faster than forking the more optimised external program.
  * SHAnE backends are now smarter about composite extensions, such as
.tar.gz Closes: #680450
  * map: Write map.dot to .git/annex, which avoids watch trying to annex it.

[Bug 1028462] Re: Launchpad reports incorrect package

2012-07-25 Thread Adolfo Jayme Barrientos
@peterzay: You don't need to be a Canonical engineer to file a bug
against an unknown package.

FYI, you can enter in a terminal ubuntu-bug -w, press Enter, and then
click in the window that belongs to the software you want to file the
bug against.

This is not a bug in Launchpad, as you shouldn't file bugs against gedit
as you describe. The only thing that I see Launchpad could do better is
to remove the text in the In what package did you find this bug? text
box when a user clicks in the I don't know option, to avoid confusions
like this one.

** Summary changed:

- Launchpad reports incorrect package
+ Entering a package name and then clicking I don't know in +filebug page
causes Launchpad to still record bug as affecting that package

[Bug 1028764] [NEW] atheros 9285 wireless card problem

2012-07-25 Thread pham gia tien
Public bug reported:

wifi card : Atheros 9285. laptop sony vaio VPCYA15FG. Problem : unstable
working/breaking wifi card. In ubuntu 12.4, sometimes it works, but usually the
system sees the wifi card and says that it is unavailable. I can not turn on
wifi card from systemsettings/network. Around the internet i found instruction
: include the text blacklist acer-wmi to the end of the file
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . I did this instruction, and the system work
wells with the wifi card. But sometimes thi above problem repeats again. I do
not know how to fix. And at this time I temporarylly solve this problem by the
following unconvennient method : if problem occurs then i delete the line
blacklist acer-wmi from file blacklist.conf, restart laptob, then again add
text blacklist acer-wmi to file blacklist.conf, then restart again. This
method works, but for me it is very unconvennient.

Ah, further elaborating: when you don't know which package a bug belongs
to, please *don't* assign it to gedit. File it against Ubuntu (no
package). See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
