[Bug 715141] Re: ntp.ubuntu.com does not have AAAA record
(yes: this is mostly the same text as I posted for Bug #241305 because the same problems apply) This issue has been reported over 4 years ago, and has become a serious real-life problem for organisations. IANA (global supply) ran out of IPv4 addresses in February 2011. Shortly after that APNIC (Asia-Pacific supply) ran out. In September 2012 RIPE NCC (Europe/Middle-East/parts of Asia) ran out of IPv4 addresses. Being able to run an IPv6-only network is increasingly important. Sure, hacks like NAT64/DNS64 exist. They form performance bottlenecks and single-points-of-failure in networks. Having native IPv6 support on a service like ntp.ubuntu.com is important. The Canonical Sysadmins are notified of this issue, so I hope they take action as soon as possible. This is something that should have been fixed last year. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/715141 Title: ntp.ubuntu.com does not have record To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/715141/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Hi Dan Thanks for the report; the reason the source package in Debian and Ubuntu pulls from github is that we don't use the embedded libs3 or leveldb as distributed at http://ceph.com/download/. [Bug 1079941] Re: -v version output is broken
It's not that the file gets stripped out, but that it is generated by 'make dist' when the tarballs are built. There are --with-system-libs3 and --with-system-leveldb configure flags that ignore the bundled library code. Would it help if those were the defaults? Or is there a fundamental issue with bundled code even if it isn't built? The missing version string is the only impact. [Bug 1076259] Re: Firestarter should use /var/log/kern.log not /var/log/messages
Another, perhaps simpler workaround is to link messages to the existing log: ln -s /var/log/kern.log /var/log/messages And we'll have to be happy with workarounds, since as the package description says, Firestarter is abandoned: Firestarter is no longer developed and is missing some critical features such as IPv6 support, so users may be advised to look into more modern alternatives such as gufw. Which is a shame since I've not seen any other friendly interface that shows active connections and event log. Except, both don't work out of the box anymore. [Bug 986524] Re: radeon 0000:02:00.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than 10000msec
No good news for me... Today my system crashed 2 times while running the radeon-driver and supertuxkart (both from oibaf's repository)... But I found (at least for me) a way to reproduce a freeze: 1. Start system. 2. Open terminal and type supertuxkart. Install this, if you havent done yet... 3. Enter and klick through the menu of new race... 4. Start playing and wait for freeze 5. Black screen every 10 seconds 6. (Try to get a running tty and save some log-files) Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of these lockups? - Mostly a series of lockups until I reboot my laptop. Sometimes even the kernel freezes... - With the stock radeon-driver 5-10 times a week. With oibaf's packages only with some applications (without them 0 times a week ;) ) When did you first notice it? - After deleting my old Ubuntu, and reinstalled Xubuntu Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce? - Start some OpenGL-heavy application/games (like supertuxkart) and play a bit around. - Even 10 seconds after boot up, this can occur. So: No relation to Suspend-to-Any. I will try to get some backtraces... But somebody tell me please, where should I start? :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986524 Title: radeon :02:00.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than 1msec To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/986524/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Karim, This is indeed another problem. Regarding avoiding missing entries, you can delete them from inside Rhythmbox (right click-Move To Trash). Rhythmbox settings are in ~/.local/share/rhythmbox . [Bug 1033226] Re: No close option, only restart
One of my main selling points when encouraging my friends and family to switch to Linux (and Ubuntu in particular) has been that restarts are seldom necessary - hitherto proudly displayed by the Restart Later button. Incidentally, I'm not aware of any equivalent to the workaround mentioned in #2 under Cinnamon, so thus far I've ps ax|grep'ed update- manager and kill'ed the pid. I use the terminal quite a lot, so I *can* continue to do this, but the symbolic value of trying to coerce me into rebooting when I might just as well choose a better, later, time to do so, by making me to jump through hoops in order to exercise this choice, gives me horror flashbacks to the times of Windows 95, which was what prompted me to turn to Linux in the first place. [Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop
For me the issue is still present in Ubuntu 12.10. I'm on emachines e725, shortly after the Quantal Quetzel was out, I tried to boot from the original 12.10 32bit iso (tried out both creating a live usb and burning cd), was able to get just the black screen. After modifying the relevant files to set additional boot parameters acpi_backlight=vendor i915.invert_brightness=1, got normally working startup disk. After installing Quantal I had to modify boot parameters also for the newly installed system's kernel. With these parameters set, the system functions normally, except for one case, when I recently closed the laptop's lid while an external monitor was connected. After raising the lid, laptop's backlight again was completely off; I was able to get it working by entering the command setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 in terminal (thanks to the other monitor). I couldn't reproduce the problem since then, though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765438 Title: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/765438/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1080025] [NEW] alacarte changes order of menu categories
Public bug reported: Thanks for updating alacarte - its good to be able to use it again. System: Xubuntu 12.10_x64 Alacarte: Installed: 3.5.5-0ubuntu1.1 Candidate: 3.5.5-0ubuntu1.1 Version table: *** 3.5.5-0ubuntu1.1 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.5.5-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://mirror.team-cymru.org/ubuntu/ quantal/universe amd64 Packages Expected to happen: The ability to edit the menu catergories and place them into a desired order. What happened instead: The Wine and Electronics categories 'jumped' to the top of Applications Menu list after editing the menu with alacarte 3.5.5-0ubuntu1.1. Alacarte does not show these two categories in its editor and there is no way to move them to a new (original) position. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 1 from a more-or-less stock installation of Ubuntu 12.04 (it had only been installed for about 3-4 hours before the upgrade). This means that I am now using network- manager 0.9.6.0-0ubuntu7. On startup, network-manager connects to my router without any issues, but I am then unable to resolve any domain names (beyond localhost); I can't browse to any websites, ping any servers using their domain names, etc. There were no problems doing any of this while using 12.04, and I did not do anything other than perform the upgrade to 12.10 Beta 1 before this happened, so what I was expecting to happen was that I would continue to be able to use DNS as usual. On poking around a bit, I discovered that dnsmasq is running as it should be (listening on 127.0.1.1) but that the config file that it is trying to use, /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf, is completely empty. This appears to be the source ofthe problem, as I can fix the issue by doing the following: - 1) Kill the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq process that is automatically started (by network-manager?). + 1) Kill the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq process that is automatically started (by network-manager?). 2) Manually create /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf and add lines such as the following (this line identifies an OpenDNS server): - server=208.67.222.222 + server=208.67.222.222 3) Manually start the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq using exactly the same options that were passed to it when it was started automatically. So, I'm guessing this file should be non-empty. (Another workaround, by the way, is to manually create an /etc/resolv.conf file with appropriate nameserver lines and then restart the networking service, but AFAIK that solution simply bypasses dnsmasq entirely.) [Bug 241305] Re: security.ubuntu.com not accessible in IPv6 (AAAA record missing in the DNS)
This issue has been reported over 4 years ago, and has become a serious real-life problem for organisations. Having native IPv6 support on an important service like security.ubuntu.com is important. Relying on 3rd party NAT64 boxes can even be a security risk (they would be the perfect place to do man-in-the-middle attacks). The Canonical Sysadmins and the Ubuntu Security Team are notified of this issue, so I hope they take action as soon as possible.
