Another, perhaps simpler workaround is to link messages to the existing log:
ln -s /var/log/kern.log /var/log/messages
And we'll have to be happy with workarounds, since as the package description
says, Firestarter is abandoned:
"Firestarter is no longer developed and is missing some critical features
such as IPv6 support, so users may be advised to look into more modern
alternatives such as gufw."
Which is a shame since I've not seen any other friendly interface that
shows active connections and event log. Except, both don't work out of
the box anymore. Quick check (forgive the off-topic): is Active
connections working for you? It doesn't for me since ip_conntrack was
replaced with nf_conntrack. Seems now the equivalent would be to run
`conntrack`.
