[Bug 1078074] Re: [SRU] Update walinuxagent to version 1.1

2012-12-07 Thread Adam Conrad
I've resurrected this to precise-proposed. Not going to do quantal just
yet for two reasons: (a) I want to have a discussion with the folks who
felt removing this was the right thing and, (b) I'll need to review
quantal's upload, since it was not accepted by ~ubuntu-sru the first
time around.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-12-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
But otherwise it sounds like it looked the same - VM still up but its
network down?

Had these VMs been running for 50 days, or was it that you hadn't seen
the problem in 50 days? If the latter, could these have been on a newer
kernel?

Yes actually I did fix that in a later boothook, but this is after I

I see. So messing with the cloud.cfg broke the system. My bad.

Thanks for the time Scott and sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase.
That info on making a preserve-hostname.cfg and apt_preserve_sources_list
file is brilliant!! Exactly what I need. I didn't come across this in docos.
Any links to this to what I have missed reading?

Probably not. :-(
Generally, though the config parsing goes:
 * /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg
 * /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/*.cfg  # in C locale sorted order
 * user-data-cloud-config , parsed in order seen.

fwiw, under bug 1023179, we're hoping to make the merge cloud-config
more sane. Right now, it basically only overrides. Ie, if 2 files have
'runcmd' defined, the last one wins.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to

[Bug 946232] Re: [Meta-bug] Missing speaker and/or internal mic port

2012-12-07 Thread David Henningsson
Okay, so for those of you who are still suffering from this bug on 12.04 with
all updates installed, there is now another option:
1) Enable proposed as instructed in comment #138
2) Install the latest HDA driver according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

Reboot and test. I would be happy if at least one person - for which this is
not yet fixed - could report back and say that the above is working. This is
necessary so the PulseAudio fix can be released through the normal update
channels.
And if you're testing it and it's not working, please file an alsa-info so we
can verify that it's really this bug you're having and nothing else.
Thanks!

[Bug 940556] Re: rhythmbox crashed trying to sync

2012-12-07 Thread SammyIAm
For what it's worth, if I go to my iPod's device properties in
Rhythmbox, and deselect the Podcasts, and then choose Sync, it DOES go
through the sync process... sort of.

When it completes the iPod shows as having synced, but the iPod itself
doesn't show any of the synced music. Choosing Eject on the iPod in
Rhythmbox causes the iPod to be re-mounted, but then I get the
initialization box saying that the iPod is corrupt or somesuch.

Still not really a successful sync, but maybe helpful info.

[Bug 940556] Re: rhythmbox crashed trying to sync

2012-12-07 Thread SammyIAm
Ah, quick addition to the above comment (since I can't edit). It
appears that the music on my iPod is no longer there, but just appears
in the library. The Music app just quickly skips over all the songs.

So I'm guessing the sync did actually happen, but the library is somehow
corrupted.

[Bug 933972] Re: Sierra Wireless 320U USB-to-WWAN modem is not detected (needs updated drivers from manufacturer website)

2012-12-07 Thread Chris Tree
Hi Tom, I'm online using the Sierra modem. No good explanation for it. I
kept trying various different combinations of Telstra log in options and
finally tried to connect using my Next G USB modem. It connected
immediately, so that eliminated interference or low signal. I shut down
immediately and connected the Sierra in one of the rear USB ports.
Connected immediately. So then I tried a process of elimination and
discovered the Sierra won't run on the front USB ports, I assume it
doesn't get enough power, don't have any better explanation. Once again
thank you for your help and patience in helping try to solve this
problem, hope this helps someone else. Chris.

[Bug 1086459] Re: Name resolution over VPN fails; mdns4_minimal returns NOTFOUND

2012-12-07 Thread Thomas Hood
Here's a more up-to-date link than the one I gave in comment #22.

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/serverguide/network-configuration.html

The relevant passage hasn't changed: it still says if you prefer to use
legacy Unicast DNS versus Multicast DNS, you can change the string in
/etc/nsswitch.conf as shown below.

hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return] mdns4_minimal mdns4

But based on my incomplete understanding of nss-mdns I would think that
in this sequence mdns4_minimal is redundant. This should be equivalent
but faster:

hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return] mdns4

Please let me know if I'm overlooking something.

[Bug 1087591] [NEW] Panic in rt2x00lib

2012-12-07 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

This panic has been occurring intermittently and unpredictably on a
gateway/router/WAP server since enabling 802.11n in hostapd which uses a
Linksys WMP600N. The server has 6 gigabit and 4 fast ethernet ports, the
Wifi, and a xDSL port.

The kernel panic was captured over a serial console since the server
fails to sync when the panic occurs and no indication is captured in the

Re: [Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-12-07 Thread Ma Xiaojun
On Fri, Dec 7, 2012 at 12:58 AM, Karen Zagorski
1045...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
i guess canonical doesn't care... I really think about going back to
windows after so many years on linux, coz all distributions have the
same issue, the idea of ubuntu was fixing THAT, not making amazon lenses

I won't go back to proprietary OS but I feel that Karen Zagorski made
a good point.

We used to have unattractive, but almost working environment like
GNOME 2. We believed that some remaining glitches would be resolved in
a few releases.

It turns out that we get ground breaking stuff like GNOME 3 and Unity
in 2011. We are now struggling about things that probably been done
right since Windows 95. I haven't seen any improvements that could
potentially increase productivity / usability for quite a long time.

Talking about Canonical management or Mark Shuttleworth, I guess they
don't realize how buggy current Ubuntu is. So they continue to seek
new targets. I actually interested in whether I can evaluate
healthiness of current Ubuntu by doing some statistics. Many packages
are indeed unhealthy because there are many unanswered bug reports
piled up.

After a long spam, I'd give some advice on IBus users, if any.
I encourage you to use Fcitx in GNOME Shell environment.
I still encourage you to use IBus in KDE, LXDE, MATE, Xfce, Unity plus WMs.
Because GNOME input integration is a mess. The upstream integration is
problematic, as included in Fedora 18 (not released yet). There are
distributions disabled IBus integration like Arch and openSUSE 12.3
(not released yet). There is a distribution called Ubuntu 12.10 that
mix GNOME 3.4/3.6 stuff.
Fcitx ported most, if not all, third-party IBus engines. It has a well
maintained Shell extension:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/261/kimpanel/
( All input method frameworks have working tray icon, but GNOME
developers don't like tray icons, so tray icons disappear in GNOME
Shell. Besides, IBus in Ubuntu has indicator patch, which may added an
additional layer of complexity.)
Switching to Fcitx and getting timely support from its mailing list is
the only working solution for inputting stuff under GNOME Shell.

Re: [Bug 873860] Re: synaptic won't run in sudo mode and produces a segfault in the syslog

2012-12-07 Thread Daniel Hartwig
We will not allow newlines in the name filter, see above.

Such characters may still enter the filter file through other means.
This will not resolve the segfault, only reduce the likely-hood of
hitting it.

Public bug reported:

For some categories, translations don't show up in the main window part
below an app title. For example: role-playing or books magazines
are translated and their translations are shown in the categories list
but not below apps like Star Shipping Inc. which is currently in the

[Bug 1062256] Re: xtables-addons-dkms 1.42-2: xtables-addons kernel module failed to build

2012-12-07 Thread jippie
Workaround functions, but with a gotcha: there are two mconfig files on
my system:

- /usr/src/modules/xtables-addons/mconfig (editing this file works as described)
- /usr/src/xtables-addons-1.42/mconfig (seems to be an entirely independent
source tree)

Not sure where the second source tree came from. For now, the workaround
seems to work.

[Bug 1087591] Re: Panic in rt2x00lib

2012-12-07 Thread TJ
This linux-wireless patch discussion appears to describe the cause of
the issue but its not entirely clear if the patch was subsequently
reverted nor whether the offending behaviour is present in this version
of the kernel.

And this introduces the same panic again :(

The problem is the following:

We don't pass the skb in the same state back to mac80211 as we got it.

When inserting the l2pad we're moving the header and thus reduce headroom.
This patch modifies the bahavior during l2pad removal to not move the header
back into its old position but instead moves the payload. Thus the skb keeps
the reduced headroom. If this skb gets requeued into rt2x00 (which can happen
when the frame wasn't acked and the according STA is known to e in powersave
mode) the header and payload get aligned again further reducing headroom which
results in a too small headroom for the TXWI and thus a skb_under_panic.

http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/pipermail/users_rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/2010-November/002457.html

From looking at the hostapd log just prior to the panic there was a
timeout which might imply the kernel would need to requeue the packet
several times:

[Bug 1087524] [NEW] Bluetooth app crashes wifi adapter

2012-12-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On my HP Laptop (one year old) when I turn on my bluetooth it kills my
Wifi and my Wifi key (button I press to turn wifi off and on stays off).

Even after turning off bluetooth I cannot turn my wifi back on.

I don't know weather this has been documented or not but I needed to be
sure.

A little note: I went back to Windows 7 on my same laptop it also killed
my wifi but I was able to turn it back off when I turned off my
bluetooth...

[Bug 879324] Re: apt-get dselect-upgrade prefers multiarch over native

2012-12-07 Thread Wichert Akkerman
I ran into this as well. What I did was pretty simple:

1. install precise on an amd64 server, install a bunch of stuff
2. run dpkg --get-selections there
3. install a second amd64 server with precise
4 run apt-get update on the second server
5. run dpkg --set-selections with the list from the first server on the second
server
6. run apt-get dselect-upgrade on the second server

This installed many, many i386 package. Some examples:

[Bug 1018020] Re: Logitech webcam not working

2012-12-07 Thread Gramler
HI

Running a Logitech, Inc. Webcam C310 on latest Quantal mainline kernel.

I see lots ofcannot set freq 48000 to ep 0x86 in log
Also microphone on cam stops working intermittently
Behaviour was identical in Precise.

I found that a workaround for this that works (mostly) is to keep
camera unpluged during boot or wake from suspend and repluging it in
after boot.

owever this is not a surefire fix as I have seen it triggred random.

Unplugging and replugging the Cam helps, but tends to crash things like
skype

This seems to be issue that occurs widely .
There are several references that claim that this is due to something in
snd-usb-audio going wrong see here for one:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=663583

Here is a claimed workaround:
http://www.techytalk.info/logitech-e3500-webcam-and-cannot-set-freq-16000-to-ep-0x86/

I will try it...

[Bug 1087593] Re: Translations for some category titles not shown on apps

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks for your bugreport.

This is indeed the case. It appears there is a mismatch between the client
strings and the software-center-agent server strings.
The client has Role Playing as the translatable name, but the server sends
Role-Playing. One fix would be if the server would simply send Role Playing
in this case.

Re: [Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing Safely Remove Drive and Eject options from Quicklists. Only have Unmount.

2012-12-07 Thread Dražen Lučanin
If there can't be a safely remove option, could you at least add an
unmount all partitions on device option or something similar so that
people don't have to right-click and unmount X partitions separately before
they can unplug the device? I'm guessing it can't be that hard to find
other partitions mounted from a certain device if one has been selected.

Anyway, from all the machines with Linux installed I've worked on over the
years I haven't once encountered an internally wired USB device and I have
to deal with my multi-TB external disks and their numerous partitions
daily. I think that a mistake of forgetting to unmount one of 6-7
partitions and causing the loss of data greatly outweights having to reboot
your machine if you accidentaly unmount an internally wired CD drive or
something.

The safe remove functionality was removed from udisks2, and it's not
planned to bring it back. It caused too much trouble with e. g. devices
which are internally wired to an USB port, and you could never use them
again until after a reboot. Also, having two options was a constant source
of confusion. So I'm afraid this is wontfix from the distro side.

Martin, There is myself and I am sure many others who find this
justification unacceptable! I have several systems in which devices
are connected internally via USB headers/ports. Yes, the option does
exist, be it Ubuntu 12.04.1, Windows XP-7, etc. to safely remove these
devices via a right-click, even though they are devices that would not
normally require such action. Examples of these devices are a wireless
N network adapter, an internal media card reader with USB port, etc.
Quite frankly, it comes down to a user exercising diligence when right-
clicking on any device and knowing what device it is that they are about
to safely remove beforehand! Saying that it causes too much trouble for
devices that would then require a reboot to use again is in my opinion,
a cop-out! It is a chance that most users would be willing to take, to
err on the side of caution when it comes to properly powering down a
device first before removing it! If it is a choice between having the
safely remove command available to remove a device properly by
completely powering it down or not having the safely remove command
available at all in an attempt to eliminate the confusion that exists in
correlation to the eject/unmount commands while helping to prevent some
users from accidentally removing the wrong device, I think the majority
of users do not find it as confusing as you implicate. I and others I
am sure would rather have the option to safely power down our devices
using the safely remove command and thus this is a request to have it
formally reinstated. This too, has prevented me from upgrading to
 Ubuntu 12.10!

[Bug 1066529] Re: All jobs stopped, epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed

2012-12-07 Thread Till Kamppeter
I cannot reproduce the bug, but I have a newer version of the driver:
epson-inkjet-printer-201115w 1.0.1-1lsb3.2. Please do a system update
and check whether your package gets updated via the command:

dpkg -l | grep epson

If this does not happen, remove your print queue(s) for this printer and
uninstall the driver:

dpkg -P epson-inkjet-printer-201115w

Then unplug the USB cable of the printer and re-plug it. If the printer
does not get set up automatically, start system-config-printer to set up
the printer and let it auto-download Epson's driver.

Does your printer work now?

[Bug 932177] Re: XFCE (and other non-GNOME) desktops do not initialise gnome-keyring correctly / WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to PKCS11

2012-12-07 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
In my opinion, for Ubuntu-based distributions the root cause of the bug
is in lightdm package. At least, in quantal it becomes default display
manager for all desktops including non-GNOME ones.

In files:
 * /etc/pam.d/lightdm
 * /etc/pam.d/lightdm-greeter

it has the following line:

session optionalpam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

The line starts gnome-keyring daemon for all desktops, while only few of them
can properly set up gnome-keyring right now.
Probably only_if argument should be used, so keyring daemon will start only for
supported environment.

One possible workaround is to switch from lightdm to DE speciffic display
manager which don't start gnome-kering
at all.

So it appears that the backend process aptdaemon has failed for some
reason. Do you got any further error error messages or anything in
/var/crash/ ? Could you please attach the syslog file? Maybe that
contains some clues.
