[Bug 1093223] [NEW] Panic or segfault in Samba

2012-12-22 Thread Christopher Nighswonger
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS

samba:
  Installed: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.10

Samba seems to segfault at random intervals for no apparent (to me) reason.
Below is a backtrace.

I'm really not sure what to say beyond this. If someone will let me
know, I'll be glad to provide whatever other info I can.

[Bug 1093057] [NEW] DejaDup application UI not visible

2012-12-22 Thread Thomas Bechtold
Public bug reported:

DejaDup should run a weekly backup. The application seems to start
(there's a blue arrow on the left of the icon in unitys launcher). Also
the processes are running:

$ ps awxu|grep deja
myuser 4585 0.0 0.0 40144 3840 ?Sl 08:37 0:00
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/deja-dup/deja-dup-monitor
myuser 4875 0.0 0.4 283984 17520 ?SNl 08:39 0:00 deja-dup
--backup --auto

But when I click the icon, nothing happens.
DejaDup should do a backup on a full encrypted external harddisk. With older
versions, DejaDup asked for the password and started the backup.

2012-12-22 Thread Matt
Public bug reported:

Running on Nexus 7 daily from December 20, 2012 (arm-gnueabihf).

It seems I am able to run vanilla Eclipse OK (installed with apt-get

I get a crash with an OpenJDK error message shortly after the
splashscreen appears. See attached logs/cordump.

[Bug 1093065] [NEW] dragging window from one desktop to another (edge flip) causes mouse pointer to loose window

2012-12-22 Thread Bevor
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:12.04
compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu1

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:0.9.7.6-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages

Description:
I use the desktop wall plugin of compiz and I checked the Edge Flip Move
option in Edge Flipping tab to be able to drag a window from one desktop to
another by holding down the window header with left mouse button and dragging
it out of the desktop to cause a desktop change. This basically works, but it
has a bug since launch of 12.04. If the desktop switch has been executed, the
mouse pointer looses the window. That means that the window didn't move exactly
the same position as the mouse pointer does. The window is slower than the
mouse pointer. On the next desktop the mouse pointer is ahead of the window but
I can still move the window around as long as I didn't stop holding the left
mouse button, although the mouse pointer is out of the window. If I try to
drag a window to the next but one desktop, I loose the window in the second
desktop and don't see it on the third desktop because the window is so much
behind the mouse pointer that I gets lost in the previous desktop view.

Expected:
Window should move to the same position as the mouse pointer does. This worked
in all previous versions of compiz.

images, and are mounted read only. Mountall warns about it and tries to
remount them in endless loop. I don't know why it happens only
occasionally though.

[Bug 1065400] Re: Support for loading Broadcom bluetooth firmware

2012-12-22 Thread Jesse Sung
Christophe,

Firmware seems to be loaded correctly, so I may guess that it's due to a
wrong firmware or a bug in hex2hcd. Does the firmware in comment #21
work?

@benklop,

This one does not look like a broadcom 43142 or 20702 device which this
issue works on.

[Bug 1040259] Re: FFE: libmessaging-menu transitions for quantal

2012-12-22 Thread Juan Antonio Peña
shiki,

That's a tricky question. As you can see the bug is in progress
currently, but before being released it needs to be tested by the
community and follow all the steps required to ensure that it really
solves the problem. it depends on how easy is the bug to solve and how
fast the fixer works. To be honest it doesn't look easy to deal with, so
just be patient, it will arrive sooner or later.

[Bug 1093076] [NEW] package lightdm (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 10

2012-12-22 Thread Alex Ivanov aka 'SchiFFer'

During installation it asked to switch DM to lightdm and I agreed. After

[Bug 1077546] Re: Gnome Shell sudo dialog said Sorry, that didn't work. Please try again when opening Synaptic

2012-12-22 Thread rubadubdub
Hi,

Ik know this has been changed from: synaptic (Ubuntu) → policykit (Ubuntu)
But I only have this issue when in Gnome Shell I search for package and start
the package manager.
But when I search for synaptic and start the package manager I don't have
this issue.

I can't find out what the underlying problem is but maybe it helps
someone else to home in on the problem.

2012-12-22 Thread rubadubdub
sorry scratch my last remark.

I only have this issue when what I search for in Gnome Shell is NOT the
first result in the application list.

So when searching for p and using arrows to move right and selecting
the package manager or clicking on all programs and scrolling to
synaptic package manager does not result in this issue.

Only when package manager is the first result when searching for pack

[Bug 1093082] [NEW] pcmanfm crash viewing network files from Win98

2012-12-22 Thread Lloyd Ewing
Public bug reported:

When using PCManFM to view files over network that are on a Win 98SE
system, some directories show a subdirectory with an icon but no file
name. An attempt to do anything with one of those unnamed directories
causes PCManFM to crash. No error message is shown, the PCManFM window
just disappears.

Right-clicking on an unnamed directory to look at the properties
succeeds, but PCManFM crashes immediately when that properties window is
closed.

The unnamed directories seem to correspond to real directories that are
not shown otherwise. Appearance of unnamed directories is inconsistent
between directories on the Win98 system, but it seems to be repeatable
for directories which do have the problem.

[Bug 1040557] Re: UEFI boot live-usb bricks SAMSUNG 530U3C, np700z5c laptop

2012-12-22 Thread montini
Is there any information if it is safe to start 12.10 live USB flash in mode
UEFI and CMS (mixed bootloader) on NP530U3C-A05EE? Or only the plain CMS is
safe at the moment? I.e. is it only possible to dual boot ubuntu and win8 by
switching boot mode in the BIOS settings or UEFI and CMS method is safe
aswell?
Bought this machine a few days ago and accidentally ran into this bug page
(thank god though) - would've thought twice if I knew such issues are even
possible :/
Typing from Win8 but I miss my ubuntu already.
BTW, I managed to run 12.10 liveUSB in plain CMS mode with no fatal
consequences - but still was afraid to install it yet.

[Bug 578045] Re: Upgrading packaged Ubuntu application unreasonably involves upgrading entire OS

2012-12-22 Thread John Mills
I just wanted to add these comments from OMG Ubuntu to this thread as I
really think this shows the degree of frustration that exists around
this bug. The subscribers to this bug repport would obviously like to
see a resolution as this both benefits us and Canonical. How can we now
escalate this to Mark Shuttleworth directly or the desktop team to
really look and understand what this means for Ubuntu adoption long
term. This bug report was opened two and a half years ago and is rated
as critical, when will we see something finally get done or do we just
have to live with this broken update process indefinitely?

Where is the Ubuntu 12.04 support? Surely effort should be made to support the
so called 'advocated' release of Ubuntu, you know like Valve are doing with
Steam.

I just noticed this: https://launchpad.net/~n-muenc...

For some reason he's got two ppa's, one with quantal/precise/oneric packages
and one with oneric/precise packages for some reason only this one seems to
have 2.0.5 for precise, even though both ppa's have precise packages.

You'd have to ask the packagers who package VLC about that.

If you're on an LTS I suspect you value tried and tested stability over
'assumed stability' of a newer release, in which case sticking with the Ubuntu
version is the smart thing to do.
6 1 •Reply•Share ›

Sicofante Joey-Elijah Sneddon • 4 days ago
I stay on an LTS because I value _system stability_, not applications being
ancient AND I don't want to upgrade all of the systems I administer (which are
a big bunch) every six months.

It's about time we separate the concepts of desktop stability and server
stability. A server may happilly live with 2 year old applications. A
desktop, hardly. Especially a home oriented desktop like Ubuntu.

I know I sound like a broken record, but someone at Canonical needs to urgently
address the decoupling of system updates and application updates. You just
can't compete with OS X or Windows and maintain the current situation.

Brandon Watkins Sicofante • 4 days ago
ppa's aren't perfect, but they do the job fine for me. IMO they are what makes
ubuntu infinitely more usable than other distros, and are the only reason I can
stand sticking with an LTS release. I too am sticking with 12.04 LTS, because
I've found gnome 3.6 to be by far the buggiest gnome release I've ever used,
especially gnome-shell which has a giant infinately reproducible memory leak
/rant. But I've been able to find good ppa's for everything that I want updated
in 12.04.

Don't get me wrong I do agree with you, I think this is a problem that
needs to be addressed, but at least ubuntu has a good stop-gap solution
with ppa's, its a much worse situation in a lot of other distros.

Its worth mentioning that its not as easy as you might think to decouple
system updates from application updates, due to the way package management
works. Linux heavily uses shared libraries, so many applications depend on the
same shared library. Updating applications to their newest versions may often
necessitate updating the shared libraries that they depend on. The problem is
that this can potentially break other applications which can be a big issue.
Because of this this decoupling will sadly never happen unless the way ubuntu's
package management works is radically changed.

Sicofante Brandon Watkins • 3 days ago
1. How do you update LibreOffice? It's stuck on 3.6.02 for 12.04.1 and I
wouldn't call it a niche app, but probably the second most important one after
Firefox, for many seats.

2. I don't think decoupling apps and system updates is easy _with the
current package manager_. However, there are other solutions out there.
The need for shared libraries is highly debatable these days and it is
by no means indispensable when it comes to desktop apps. There's at
least one very simple solution, and it's already implemented in OS X and
Gobolinux: self-contained apps. I haven't researched it too much, but
there's a new package management system called Guix
(https://savannah.gnu.org/proje... ) that makes some promises too about
this issue.

Creating an entirely new desktop environment can't be considered an easy task
either, but it was addressed by Canonical (and it's still unfinished...). I
think decoupling system and apps updates should be a priority as high as
improving Unity performance (which is probably Ubuntu's biggest issue now) in
order to compete with mainstream OSs.

I have to agree here Sicofante, the current upgrade process in Ubuntu is so
clearly broken that Canonical must be really drinking their own Kool aid to not
realise this.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Using greybird theme (latest stable version) with libreoffice 3.6.4,
it's not possible to see ticks as menu item backgrounds and ticks are
both white. This does not happen with other gtk2 applications, as they
are using black ticks on white background.

[Bug 1019863] Re: Occasional ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel D815EEA2 mainboard ACPI S3 State Resume Freeze

2012-12-22 Thread fpgahardwareengineer
(In reply to comment #8)

Hi,

Okay, I just had a crash with Linux 3.7 kernel.
Whether it is Linux 3.2 or 3.7 kernel, it seems like page fault is one of the
cause of the crash after ACPI S3 State resume.
However, Ubuntu is a lot more stable with Linux 3.7 kernel, but when it
crashed, the crash pattern was similar to when it crashes with Linux 3.2 kernel.
Also with Linux 3.2 kernel, even after resuming from ACPI S3 State once, the
system tends to get unstable (i.e., I get random Ubuntu has experienced
internal error type errors. The module that crashes is pretty much random.).
Is this bug specific to Pentium III or Intel 815 chipset?
I will rule out ICH2 southbridge because it was also used with early Pentium 4
systems, and those are fairly stable when it comes to ACPI S3 State resume.
I have a couple of Intel and ASUS mainboards with Intel 850 chipset, and I have
never seen this types of issues with ACPI S3 State resume.
I will change the tag to reflect the latest development.
I also have one other Intel 815E chipset mainboard from Intel (Intel D815EEA
mainboard) so I will take a look at that one to see if I can reproduce the
similar crash patterns.
Intel did have many, many updates related to ACPI S3 State resume issues with
D815EEA2 mainboard in the past.

[Bug 1093085] [NEW] wireless headphone's radio stick removal freezes laptop

2012-12-22 Thread wierdlm...@gmail.com
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech H600 wireless head phone. When I remove the radio USB
stick, my Lenovo X220 freezes. It becomes completely inoperable, and
all I can do is shut down with the power button. The behavior is
reproduceable.

Though I have been doing this radio removal on a regular basis (say,
once a week), I saw the crash only in the last week or so. I do update
the 12.04 system diligently. Please let me know which package I should
look at.

I don't see the problem when I remove the radio stick for my (also
logitech) mouse.

But in precise it works without external thumbnailer. This is a regression.

2012-12-22 Thread Benjamin Drung
You have to specify a _source_ package name. In case of kleopatra, the
source package is kdepim.

Therefore this bug report is about improving the error message. Maybe we
should add Have you specified a valid source package name? or Please
specify a existing source package name.

[Bug 1093085] Re: wireless headphone's radio stick removal freezes laptop

2012-12-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1093085/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 586279] Re: Wrong conversion of auml; in HTML

2012-12-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
The attachment fix-586279.debdiff of this bug report has been
identified as being a patch in the form of a debdiff. The ubuntu-
sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can
review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. In the event that this is in
fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing the tag
'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that it is not
flagged as a patch. Additionally, if you are member of the ubuntu-
sponsors team please also unsubscribe the team from this bug report.

[Bug 755841] Re: [sandybridge] Graphics tearing when playing video

2012-12-22 Thread postadelmaga
Did some test here and I thinks I find out the origin of the issue ( comment
#19 gave me the right hint, about overlay ):
Basically if you:
- disable composite ( sorry till now I cannot find a better solution )
AND
- [VLC] deselect this option: Video - Display - Accelerated video output
(Overlay)
OR
- [VLC] select this video output: Video - Output - OpenGL GLX
You will not have any Tearing

[Bug 83010] Re: Ubiquity feisty herd 3 selection of hard drive not correct

2012-12-22 Thread Colin Watson
There's no point following up to such an old bug about a new issue; it's
almost certainly a very different root cause. Filing a new bug is
easier and less likely to create confusion, so please file a new bug
with complete logs.

[Bug 857983] Re: The Pointing Devices menu item is missing after upgrading to Oneiric

2012-12-22 Thread Mark Russell
Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your review and feedback. I took another look and found this
Debian bug [1] which was filed on behalf of someone wanting gpointing to
appear on LXDE. It was closed wontfix because:

This is quite intentional, because it uses GNOME infrastructure to
restore settings on new login, what does not work in other desktop
environments.

What do you think?

[Bug 1047384] Re: System Encryption Password set before setting keyboard locale

2012-12-22 Thread scoopex
I also needed some time to find out that i only have to exchange the z and
the y.

Additional problems/suggestions:

- Just use the keyboard layout selected by the user to set the passphrase
- My Dell Latitude E6430 does not always show the password prompt for the disc
enryption
(hitting Control+F1 provided my the text-login)
- I also wondered why there is no graphical frontend to the crypsetup-tool in
the standard distribution to change the disk encryption password(s)
(non-commandline-users probably want to change the passphrase)

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the
support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are
uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find help posting your problem
in the support forum of your local Ubuntu's community

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-22 Thread pip pop
I'd like to add that I have this Hard Lock on both my desktops, mounting a
Celeron (sandy bridge) dual core and the other is mounting a i-5 quad core
Sandy bridge.
Both system mount a Nvidia vga (gt430 and gt480).
I got those hard locks with Mint 14 and Xubuntu 12.10.
On Xubuntu machine I tried ubuntu Kernels 3.6 and 3.7 (rc7 candidate) and the
bugs still affected my system.
I also tried, without any success in eliminating the issue, several Nvidia
drivers: 310.10, 313.09 and 304.xx series.
