The last one I'm aware of that did not exhibit this issue was 3.5.0-27. WORKAROUND: 1. edit grub command line to add 'nomodeset' and boot. 2. Then add 'nomodeset' in GRUB2's kernel command line (using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub) and run 'sudo update-grub' 3. Add the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local: modprobe -r radeon modprobe -r drm modprobe radeon modeset=1 4. Remove ~/.Xauthority 5. Reboot WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter: nomodeset However, with nomodeset, 3D don't work correctly, cant use normal unity session, unity 2D session works but with artifacts. [Bug 1199060] [NEW] installing/updating tools need to detect EOL versions
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Digging around bugs reported on bugs.launchpad, i've seen a bunch of reports rised by users (mostly new comers i suppose) not knowing about versions having reached EndOfLife. Most of these reports was against solftware-center : like, got server error 500 or i does not understand why software-center cant download even if my network works with the browser. So launchpad get flooded by invalid reports. Users have to be aware of such a case : the different tools (installer/updater) should detect the different EOL version, and be able to display a popup message saying something like that version is no more available, choose a newer ubuntu release; on the other hand Apport also need to refuse such reports. _dan_, sorry for the bad experience you had in this bug report. I understand how the report started out filed against update-manager: that's one of the ways to access software-properties. Unfortunately, that meant the report doesn't yet contain the hardware and driver information that would be useful in figuring out what went wrong. If you're still willing to contribute for a few minutes, :-) could you please enter this command in a terminal: apport-collect 1126234 That should automatically attach info relevant to the bug. [Bug 1201180] Re: Pressing power button turns off the PC ignoring the presence of another session manager
I did some investigation last night. Here's what I found out. gnome- session doesn't (successfully) set a shutdown inhibitor lock, meaning that logind shuts the system down as soon as it is asked to. When run, gnome-session outputs the following warning gnome-session[6124]: WARNING: Error getting login monitor: -2 That comes from the following block of code if ((ret = sd_login_monitor_new (NULL, sd_source-monitor)) 0) { g_warning (Error getting login monitor: %d, ret); } else { sd_source-pollfd.fd = sd_login_monitor_get_fd (sd_source-monitor); sd_source-pollfd.events = G_IO_IN; g_source_add_poll (source, sd_source-pollfd); } The return code there is '-2' which corresponds to ENOENT. Checking the code for sd_login_monitor_new() in systemd shows that this function tries to inotify_add_watch() on a number of paths systemd cares about. If we strace -f -e trace=inotify_add_watch gnome-session then the output shows [pid 5439] inotify_add_watch(14, /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd/machine, IN_MOVED_TO|IN_CREATE|IN_DELETE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) And indeed this directory has not been created. In systemd:src/core/cgroup.c, these hierarchies are created here: if (m-running_as == SYSTEMD_SYSTEM) { cg_create(SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER, m-cgroup_hierarchy, ../user); cg_create(SYSTEMD_CGROUP_CONTROLLER, m-cgroup_hierarchy, ../machine); } I believe the if check there is essentially systemd as PID 1, i.e. not true for Ubuntu. In systemd git this seems to have moved to /run/systemd/machines/ created by systemd-machined. Now, I'm not totally sure that this broken call is why the inhibitor lock isn't being set, but sd_login_monitor_new() definitely shouldn't be broken anyway and fixing this seems like a good place to start. ** Also affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1201180 Title: Pressing power button turns off the PC ignoring the presence of another session manager To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1201180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1191853] Re: gtk-window-decorator crashed with SIGSEGV in wnck_window_get_actions()
** Description changed: gtk-window-decorator crashes each time I close a firefox window in which I had a google hangout. + + TEST CASE: + (Note: There is probably a shorter or more obvious test case, but that's how I reproduce it systematically on several systems) + 1. Open a new tab in Firefox and start a Google hangout + 2. Detach the tab to new window (right-click on the tab, and select Move to new window in the contextual menu) + 3. Right-click to title bar of the newly open window and select Always on top and Always on visible workspace in the contextual menu. + 4. Chat with your friends for a bit + 5. Close the window + + ACTUAL RESULT + This crash and windows decorations are gone. To recover the decoration, open a terminal and run gtk-window-decorator then close the terminal with CTRL+D (not the close button of the terminal, that'd kill the decoration too) + + EXPECTED RESULT + The window closes without crash ProblemType: Crash DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.10 Package: compiz-gnome 1:0.9.9~daily13.04.18.1~13.04-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.9.0-5.12-generic 3.9.5 Uname: Linux 3.9.0-5-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: - + ApportVersion: 2.10.2-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, vpswitch, snap, mousepoll, resize, place, move, wall, grid, regex, imgpng, session, gnomecompat, animation, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, workarounds, scale, expo, ezoom, unityshell] CompositorRunning: compiz CompositorUnredirectDriverBlacklist: '(nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8.0' CompositorUnredirectFSW: true CrashCounter: 1 Date: Mon Jun 17 17:43:36 2013 DistUpgraded: 2012-02-01 00:15:24,616 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: saucy DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: - virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-2-generic, x86_64: installed - virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-3-generic, x86_64: installed - virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-4-generic, x86_64: installed - virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-5-generic, x86_64: installed - virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-6-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-2-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-3-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-4-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-5-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.2.10, 3.9.0-6-generic, x86_64: installed ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator GraphicsCard: - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [Bug 635023] Re: firefox plugin-container using 99% CPU - overheating and lock-up
If this is still an issue for anyone who is running the latest and greatest version of Firefox etc and has stumbled upon this needing a quick tip, there is a bit of a messy workaround for this issue: The plugin-container is designed to contain crashes from plugins like flash and stop them from crashing the browser along with them. Flash may crash even nowadays (I find it surprising given how long it's been out and how employed it still is! It is still being updated now and then and html5 has yet to be fully implemented across youtube etc (usually because of it impeding advertisements)). The plugin container can be disabled if you are prepared for the chance that a stray flash application can inadvertently crash and take the browser with it (annoying), by doing this: Go to the page about:config in firefox Search for a boolean entry named dom.ipc.plugins.enabled and double-click it or otherwise change it so that it reads 'false' instead of 'true'. The next time firefox is started (close it and open it back up or restart it - there's an addon called restartless restart which is amazing for this), the plugin container will be long gone. Set the entry back to true to reenable the container, but if you're prepared for the possibility of grief from crashing or you never bother with flash things anyway, then perhaps this will be useful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/635023 Title: firefox plugin-container using 99% CPU - overheating and lock-up To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/635023/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1169386] Re: [keymap] Toshiba satellite A660: backlight key does not work
I'm running UBUNTU 12.04 LTS Live CD and the backlight doesn't work. I have a Toshiba A665-s6057 which normally doesnt come with a backlight KB, but it works under Windows 7. I have some info that might be of interest and possibly the source of confusion. The service manual for the A660 series shows a bit called KBLED. It does not, however, tell you what the bit does. My belief is that the Satellite Logo can be turned on and off and the KB Illumination can be turned On and Off. It appears that when a backlit KB is detected, the illumination settings appear in the BIOS options. Toshiba typically does a On/Off or Timed off when you hit a key. In Windows the touch bar at the top of the keyboard can be completely illuminated or turned off as it is in UBUNTU, I ran Win 7 with the touch bar illuminated. In windows, if you touched, say the wireless button on the touch bar, the wireless button would go off briefly and then return to being on again. Dunno, if the touch bar and Function events involk the same scan code. ECO is a mode I really never played with in Windows. I believe the keyboard Illumination comes on briefly when the laptop is booted from a powered down state. I'm not in a position to check Win 7 behavior at this point in time. If I remember correctly the behavior of the KB can be set via the BIOS or through a Toshiba provided control panel. Thus there is likely more than one bit that defines the keyboard illumination behavior. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1169386 Title: [keymap] Toshiba satellite A660: backlight key does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1169386/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1178598] Re: Indicator applet display the wrong date
Well, this seems a small bug, but I've already made false decisions on the shown date. As it takes chance for it to appear (it does not always occur, and having the computer switched on at midnight doesn't (!) prevent it reliable) it seems only a small annoyance, but on the other hand: A simple date clock, not able to show the current date correctly is a very embarrassing glitch. I wonder if there is systemic problem in Gnome or the indicator architecture or something else, if even a simple clock contribute long lists of bugs? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1178598 Title: Indicator applet display the wrong date To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-datetime/+bug/1178598/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
