[Bug 1224684] Re: [SRU] cannot sudo, prompted for password on 12.04 Windows Azure

2013-09-13 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Scott, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into precise-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-
init/0.6.3-0ubuntu1.7 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

** Changed in: cloud-init (Ubuntu)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Ben Howard (utlemming)

** Changed in: cloud-init (Ubuntu)
Assignee: Ben Howard (utlemming) = Scott Moser (smoser)

** Description changed:

+ [IMPACT] On Windows Azure for 12.04, cloud-init fails to set right user
+ name for the sudoer.d file unless the user sets a password. This means
+ that SSH-key auth users are locked out of sudo access, effectively
+ making the instance useless.
+
+ This is critical, as instances that are affected are completely useless
+ for things requiring sudo access. There is no recovery and no work
+ around.
+
+ This only affects new instances, not existing instances. However, it may
+ affect rebundled instances.
+
+ [Test Case] Launch a new build with -proposed using SSH-only
+ authentication. The defined user in the launch should be able to sudo
+ -i.
+
+ [Regression Potential] Regression potential is low, as this fixes a
+ completely broken feature.
+
+ [Original Report]:
  Launcing an instance like this:
  azure vm create --vm-size=extrasmall --vm-name=smoser0912pr-hack2
--location=East US
--ssh-cert=/home/smoser/.ssh/id_rsa-smoser-az...@brickies.pem --no-ssh-password

Re: [Bug 987502] Re: libxml2-dev: /usr/bin/xml2-config isn't identical across all arch

2013-09-13 Thread Andrew
Hi Darko,

Thank you very much for writing this up for me mate!

I'm not sure I even need this as I'm just an average Net user?

My system is 32 bit but I think I installed this maybe when thinking of
doing a web site???

I tried what you wrote but keep getting errors like it doesn't exist,
though I'm prompted everyday to update and returns a failure.

Here's the output after the first command:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
   python3.2 python3.2-minimal
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
   libxml2
The following NEW packages will be installed:
   libxml2-dev
The following packages will be upgraded:
   libxml2
1 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Failed to exec method /usr/lib/apt/methods/
E: Method has died unexpectedly!
E: Sub-process returned an error code (100)
E: Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/ did not start correctly

Second command output:

mv: cannot stat `/usr/bin/xml2-config': No such file or directory

and so on it goes pretty much the same from there.

Please see the screenshots from the Update Center too.

I'm really grateful for your help with this mate, I tried to follow the
links to rectify them all but don't have a clue what to do with the
files once downloaded.

Cheers mate!

Andrew

 Hi Andrew.

Generally, both versions of the library are needed if one needs multi
architecture building option (e.g. x86_64 native build and i386
 backsupport (cross)build for 32-bit installations).

I am building my i386 and x86_64 application on Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using -m32
 and -m64 gcc options.
But running only 64-bit version of the application locally for the matter.

To accomplish this I have done:

 Firstly installed libxml2-dev (x86_64)
sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev

 Secondly, move problematic xml2-config
sudo mv /usr/bin/xml2-config /usr/bin/xml2-config.x86_64

 Then install libxml2-dev:i386
sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev:i386

 Rename xml2-config for i386
sudo mv /usr/bin/xml2-config /usr/bin/xml2-config.i386

 Restore x86_64 xml2-config
sudo cp /usr/bin/xml2-config.x86_64 /usr/bin/xml2-config

Finally, had to call ldconfig to refresh the library paths and gcc
builds my application with -m32 and excplicit -m64 (although not
 needed).

 ldconfig reports:
 $ ldconfig -p | grep xml2
   libxml2.so.2 (libc6,x86-64) = /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libxml2.so.2
   libxml2.so.2 (libc6) = /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxml2.so.2
   libxml2.so (libc6,x86-64) = /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libxml2.so

I had a feeling that would happen. The package python-apt is updated,
in this new version a few deprecated calls/functions are removed and
jockey depends on those removed functions.

[Bug 1097570] Re: grub2-signed can not find the right device when there are two filesystems containing the file '.disk/info'.

2013-09-13 Thread Bin Li
Colin,

I try to backport the patch into precise to make a test, so that I can
verify if it could fix the issue in 12.04.

I found the code is very big difference, the patch doesn't work for
precise.

lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/saucy/grub2/saucy

And I also try to build source from the latest grub2 in your lp in my
pbuilder. Below is the log.

dpkg-source: error: can't build with source format '3.0 (quilt)': no upstream
tarball found at ../grub2_2.00.orig.tar.{bz2,gz,lzma,xz}

No need to restart. Strange...just replug then it'll be ready.

Perhaps behavior in the end of comment #49 could be a hint. Printer
fax status (usually) switched after replugging cable.

[Bug 1223296] Re: System freezes when RAM is 100% used

2013-09-13 Thread matteodefelice
Unfortunately I can't try a new kernel on my machine, anyway I tried to
replicate the same problem using malloc + memset. I know it's trivial
but in this way I can avoid using complex softwares like R or MATLAB.
Given the 'top' stops refreshing once my RAM is full I cannot see if the
system uses swap space correctly.

However settings are still not applied when booting from S3 or S4 state.

[Bug 1221813] Re: UBUNTU_UI_TOOLKIT_THEMES_PATH should include a writable path so that users can install themes (or operators can have custom themes)

2013-09-13 Thread Zsombor Egri
The env var can point anywhere, also to a writable spot. If that
writable spot contains themes that derive from one of the basic themes,
those will work properly. However if those themes are derived from other
themes not installed to the default location, applying the theme will
fail. For that this env variable is not enough. So we need an additional
setting/env var pair which stores the additional paths the custom themes
reside.

[Bug 1223808] Re: gmbrc misses line to activate albuminfo-plugin

2013-09-13 Thread Simon Steinbeiß
I have successfully tested the patch just now in Saucy.
1) The plugin works as expected now
2) No more UI freezing

So the proposed path is to enable the plugin by default for Saucy (as
it's part of our default layout) and re-think this implementation (see
previous comment by Quentin) for 14.04.

[Bug 987502] Re: libxml2-dev: /usr/bin/xml2-config isn't identical across all arch

2013-09-13 Thread Darko Lombardo
Hi Andrew.

I do not think your issue is related to this bug at all.

As a user you probably have no need for a libxml2-dev package, only
libxml2.

I posted notes in reference to this bug due to a deliberate request by the user
(developer) for libxml2-dev:i386 on a 64-bit Ubuntu, which is not something
users are likely to try to install.
Like said before, both versions of the library are needed if one needs multiple
architecture building option on a 64-bit Ubuntu.

Regarding your problem it is hard to say from the posted information, but more
of an apt (Update Manager) issue than libxml2 package issue.
I have seen your message sometimes:
- (maybe) command was not called with 'sudo'
- running out of space on HDD partition
- broken/damaged package

Try to call 'sudo apt-get update' and restart the Update Manager (or the
system).
Then retry to upgrade again using the Update Manager.

[Bug 971809] Re: 168c:0032 Wifi connection unstable -- Atheros AR9485 ath9k

2013-09-13 Thread Timo Jyrinki
j: Unfortunately I don't know where would be up-to-date and correct
instructions for easily building own patched kernel, cleanly and as a
.deb packge. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel looks
relatively simple compared to other pages, but not really sure if it's
completely accurate.

For compiling the kernel on your own, the idea would be to apply the
patch to the kernel with:

patch -p1 v2-ath9k-Add-custom-parameters-for-CUS198.patch

inside the kernel sources directory. Then compile and install the kernel
and test WLAN after rebooting into the new kernel.

If not wanting to test the patch alone and just wanting to have the
problem fixed, I posted instructions on updating only the driver at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1160188/comments/58

[Bug 1224756] Re: pulseaudio should give a visual indication when it is recording

2013-09-13 Thread Lars Uebernickel
I assume by recording you mean reading from an microphone source? (I
can't imagine any other way to figure out if an application is
recording.)

Also, I'm not sure whether turning the icon red is enough to convey an
application is using the microphone. Maybe we can get some design input
before implementing this?

By the way, this will most likely be implemented in indicator-sound, not
pulseaudio.

[Bug 1224756] Re: pulseaudio should give a visual indication when it is recording

2013-09-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
My initial thought is that it would result in a red icon (or whatever)
appearing in every Ubuntu screencast that included real-time audio. That
seems like a bad idea. If it's okay for a screencast app to record the
screen without befouling it first, why shouldn't it be okay for it to
record audio too?

[Bug 1223739] Re: Launcher - unable to reveal Launcher under autohide after using the touch screen

2013-09-13 Thread Tammy Yang
@Stephen,

Many thanks for your reply.
Sorry my description maybe a bit mis-leading, this is not a single-touch bug,
but a possible Unity bug that touchpad cannot reveal launcher if a left-click
event happens via touch-screen.

Some more information for your reference:
1. This does not happen under Unity2D but only Unity3D
2. Windows hotkey still works, so the launcher can be called via hotkey
3. When issue occurs, unity --replace or compiz --replace cannot recover it. I
only found restart lightdm (restart X) can recover the issue
4. No error occurs from
$export UNITY_LOG_SEVERITY==DEBUG;nux=DEBUG
$unity --replace
5. If I touch the screen before setting launcher to auso-hide mode, touchpad or
external mouse still cannot reveal the launcher after autohide is selected.

Extra information which may not relate to this issue directly:
The position of touchpad pointer and touch screen pointer do not sync with each
other. For example, if I move the pointer to place A via touchpad, then touch
place B on the screen, then tried to move pointer via touchpad, the pointer
appears at place A instead of place B.

[Bug 1223745] Re: Dependency resolver causes hang on boot

2013-09-13 Thread Stefan Bader
And repeating the setup in a VM I do get the same lockup, too. Hm, Steve
how is your setup? I basically have (beyond the root):

LABEL=home  /home  ext4  relatime  0  2
hostname:/srv/images/cloudimg /home/cloud-images ro,nfsvers=3 0 0

And in the VM case mountall.log again shows cloud-images as local. For
home I added another virtual disk here. In the other cases I have
another partition or another LV, so at least it seems not directly
related to what kind of storage volume home is on.
