upgraded existing instances. I can confirm that the test case has passed
in addition to the testing by Microsoft in comment #10. Marking as

[Bug 1392176] [NEW] mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with cpu hotplug

2014-11-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

== Comment: #0 - Preeti U. Murthy preeti.mur...@in.ibm.com - 2014-10-20
04:40:12 ==
---Problem Description---
Systemd mounts cgroups explicitly every boot. Since the user had no say in it,
undesired consequences are observed in reaction to cpu hotplug operations.
Here is how.

Systemd moves the tasks to the cgroup mounted by it. This cgroup automatically
becomes the child of the root cgroup which is present by default. The children
cgroups are not expected to remember their configured cpusets after hotplug
operations in the kernel. Hence when cpus are taken offline and brought back
online they are no longer used for load balancing of tasks and hence remain
unused.
This is an undesired consequence because the user had not even asked for
cgroups to be mounted, yet is not able to use the full capacity of the system.

Only when the user himself creates cgroup hierarchies, should he be
exposed to the side effects of cpu hotplug on cpusets. Else all online
cpus must be made available to him which is not happening since systemd
mounts cgroups on every boot.

Hence please revert this feature or provide an explaination as to why this is
being done.

[Bug 1392176] Re: mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with cpu hotplug

2014-11-13 Thread Martin Pitt
systemd (in the sense of pid 1) doesn't do that. I. e. if you boot with
init=/bin/systemd the only cgroup controller it puts tasks into (by
default) is the systemd one, for that very reason. But if you boot
with upstart (Ubuntu's default still), cgmanager creates cgroups.
cgmanager puts tasks into *all* controllers (including cpu); as far as
I know, this is so that user LXC containers work. So from cgmanager's
POV this might be a design decision which can't otherwise be
accomplished with the current kernel, but I'll let the cgmanager
maintainers decide about whether this is a wontfix or whether there is
a more elegant way to make user containers work.

** Summary changed:

- Systemd mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with
cpu hotplug
+ mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with cpu hotplug

** Package changed: systemd (Ubuntu) = cgmanager (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1257186] Re: memory leakage messages (no talloc stackframe)

2014-11-13 Thread Coeur Noir
I've just installed (L)uBuntu 14.04.1 from mini.iso - with samba.

'no talloc stackframe at ../source3/param/loadparm.c:4864, leaking
memory' is also there.

Before trying anything to get rid of that error message, is this worth
trying ?

What are the consequences of just let it as is and waiting for update ?

(I will use Samba for sharing folders on a little office network, with
(simple) passwords for each user - no ldap or kerberos)

[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-11-13 Thread RK
Hi,
I've tested the new 3.18 kernel
($ uname -a
Linux lina-UL30VT 3.18.0-031800rc4-generic #201411091835 SMP Sun Nov 9 23:36:36
UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

However, the bug persists. Backlight control does not work.

Furthermore, the touchpad control cannot be turned off with the hotkey,
nor does the indicator bubble pop up (I understand that this perhaps
should be reported as a separate bug)

Still, the indicator bubble for backlight control does pop up, but has
no effect on actual backlight.

[Bug 1383097] Re: [Asus X553MA] Touchpad multi-touch features doesn't work

2014-11-13 Thread Janne Heikkinen
That seems to come from commit 3ace3686f198e656624d7ca2984d053e65f6e09d:

Input: psmouse - add support for detecting FocalTech PS/2 touchpads

The Asus X450 and X550 laptops use a PS/2 touchpad from a new
manufacturer called FocalTech:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77391
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1110011

The protocol for these devices is not known at this time, but even
without knowing the protocol they need some special handling. They get
upset by some of our other PS/2 device probing, and once upset generate
random mouse events making things unusable even with an external mouse.

This patch adds detection of these devices based on their pnp ids, and
when they are detected, treats them as a bare ps/2 mouse. Doing things
this way they at least work in their ps/2 mouse emulation mode.

[Bug 1220426] Re: [nvidia-prime]Freeze while using touchpad

2014-11-13 Thread Nikhil Mahale
Hi guys,

This is a xserver issue where timers-list gets corrupted because of race
condition.
nVidia X-driver uses timer to update scanout surface after regular interval,
this timer gets removed from timers list because of this timers-list corruption
and desktop gets freezed. This is only happening with touch pad because touch
pad driver is also heavily using timers, which is easily triggering this race
condition.

xserver goes through following race condition -

   // prototype - DoTimer(OsTimerPtr timer, CARD32 now,
OsTimerPtr *prev)
   DoTimer(timers, now, timers)
   |
   |
OsBlockSignals(); SIGIO OS Signal comes just
before blocking it,

synaptics-1 handler gets called.
  // synaptics-1
gets served and scheduled again;
  // timers -
nvidia-2 - synaptics-1 - null

 *prev = timer-next;
  timer-next = NULL; // timers - null

[Bug 1392206] [NEW] Sync spice-vdagent 0.15.0-1.2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2014-11-13 Thread Jackson Doak
Public bug reported:

Please sync spice-vdagent 0.15.0-1.2 (universe) from Debian unstable
(main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- Add libsystemd-login-dev build dep.
- debian/rules: Use logind instead of ConsoleKit.
  * Fix fix-spelling-error-in-manpage.patch which didn't apply (how did that
land in Debian??)
Fixed in debian

Changelog entries since current vivid version 0.15.0-1ubuntu1:

spice-vdagent (0.15.0-1.2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload, with permission from maintainer.
  * Use systemd for session information (Closes: #756243).
Accordingly build-depend on libsystemd-login-dev, which is needed
for getting session information from logind.
  * Start spice-vdagent in the GDM3 greeter session (Closes: #732924).

[Bug 1391732] Re: Ubuntu 14.4 problem

2014-11-13 Thread Aditya Shankar Tripathi
Actually last night I tried few more solutions on internet and after shutting
down the system and then restarting it (not restart), suddenly the TOUCHPAD
WORKED.
And it Worked fine till today's noon.
But I ran few commands in terminal (not related to touchpad or its drivers),
and after rebooting the system it STOPPED WORKING again. However when it was
working /proc/bus/input/devices command, detected Synaptics Touchpad. But
now when I run the same command it doesn't show any touchpad.
I am surprised and worried.
Please respond.

Hi,

which was not possible before. Furthermore, the backlight control is
more fine-grained than before.

It seems that the problem is fixed.

OK I'm saying this is fixed in the new kernel, have been running it for

[Bug 1392176] Re: Systemd mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with cpu hotplug

2014-11-13 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1392176/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1389858] Re: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-13 Thread Alfonso Sanchez-Beato
I have monitored calls to ofono DBus connection manager interfaces
following comment #7 in

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-ofono/+bug/1226739

The command was:

# dbus-monitor --system interface=org.ofono.ConnectionManager
interface=org.ofono.ConnectionContext

I have attached the output. What I see is that a process with unique
name :1.8 is activating/deactivating periodically the cellular data
context.

# dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.DBus
/org/freedesktop/DBus org.freedesktop.DBus.GetConnectionUnixProcessID
string::1.8

showed the PID of NetworkManager.

The output of /usr/share/ofono/scripts/monitor-ofono is:

...
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = {}
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Active = False
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = { Interface = ccmni0, Gateway
= 10.79.188.18, DomainNameServers = 212.166.210.82 212.73.32.67, Netmask =
255.255.255.0, Method = static, Address = 10.79.188.18 }
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Active = True
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = {}
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Active = False
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = { Interface = ccmni0, Gateway

255.255.255.0, Method = static, Address = 10.143.31.135 }
...

ofono is just told to activate/deactivate the context, no spurious
disconnections happen.

[Bug 1389417] Re: Impossible to compute release upgrade modifications for 14.10

Hello,

I fixed the problem by removing postgis before the upgrade and re-

As the problem is easy to fix manually, display the path to log files

It should be an easy improvement of the do-release-upgrade script.

[Bug 1391476] Re: [MacBookPro11,1] Laptop wakes up while lid closed

2014-11-13 Thread Erlenmayr
@Joseph: The only thing I am pretty sure of is that it did not happen in
Trusty. But that would not help to perform a kernel bisect.

I think that the it happens less often with 3.16.0-24 than with
3.16.0-25, but I have no real data because it happens
nondeterministically. On -24 it only seems to happen if the last suspend
was a short time (less than half an hour) ago, while it seems to work
mostly if last suspend is long ago. With 3.16.0-25 (from proposed
updates repository) it seems to work almost never, but some single times
it worked.

Btw. there are no freezes on wake-up, the only problem are unplanned
wake-ups.

BTW: Did the kernel team backport the new Thunderbolt behavior for Apple
devices from kernel 3.17?

I think we need you to give us a good test case (good in the sense that
it reproduces the issue and also is easy to set up for us). Because I
tried again this morning with iperf but on two t1-micro (64bit) Trusty
daily AMIs. And with that I seem to get identical performance with or
witout GRO disabled.

25 runs gro=on: Average bandwidth = 67.1386 Mbits/sec, StdDev = 15.0925

25 runs gro=off: Average bandwitdh = 67.4393 Mbits/sec, StdDev = 15.0597

[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-11-13 Thread Harmen
I also have this problem, Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit, Unity, under a VirtualBox
instance. Most of the time it runs acceptable, but when another process
is running (which updates the screen, like a simple timer on PgAdmin3
while running a query), the memory+cpu usage goes through the roof.

[Bug 1392240] [NEW] Doesn't state Software is uptodate after installing updates

2014-11-13 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

Using rtm 157

update)
- install the updates
- look at the screen

- the screen is emptied after installing the updates, if you exit the

uptodate, that should probably be displayed after installing the

thanks for your reply. I have subsequently discarded the HP750 printer

My problem has now gone away.

I've checked output from lsusb:

There is not Enable Mobile Broadband option on default network applet,
and I cannot do new Mobile Broadband connection.

Tested with Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 (This also happen with Linux mint 16

[Bug 1303736] Re: [SRU] Black screen after wakeup from suspending by closing the laptop lid

2014-11-13 Thread J G Rennison
I just ran into this after resuming from hibernate.
As a workaround, sending a SIGTERM to the lightdm children other than the one
which is your actual session seems to resolve the issue. Presumably one of
these is the lock screen session; killing it leads to it being re-spawned, at
which the point the screen is restored to a sensible state and the lock screen
appears, without needing to kill all the running applications. This can be done
from the terminal with sudo/root.

[Bug 1384515] Re: Laptop screen dims on logout

2014-11-13 Thread Simon Steinbeiß
This is very likely not a bug in xfce4-power-manager, because when you
log out/switch users /lock your session, you're going to a new VT, which
means the default X11 settings are being used and xfce4-power-manager
isn't running there (at least not at the greeter, it's only being
started in the session).

Odd that you cannot change your brightness anymore within the session, I
could also imagine that there are some driver issues. I presume this
issue persists?

[Bug 1392275] [NEW] CDs are not unmounted when using eject-hw-button

2014-11-13 Thread Ludwig Cornelius
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu 14.04 I tried to use CDs. When using the hardware button to
eject CDs, they are not unmounted and the following CD can't be used. I
just see crippled filenames in dolphin.

How to reproduce:
-When putting a CD into the drive and mounting it using the KDE-GUI, everything
works correctly.
-Then push the hardware eject button.
-The CD is still mounted, showed by mount in terminal. (first problem)
-Insert another CD
-Mount it using KDE-GUI
-Dolphin shows only some files with chinese letters intead of the real file
names with latin letters

Expected behaviour:
-CDs are unmounted when ejected
or
-CDs can't be ejected over the hardware button when mounted.

I reproduced this bug with Kubuntu 14.04 LTS (Ubuntu with KDE installed
afterwards) and our own, modified version of Kubuntu 12 LTS.
I think this bug may be related to udisks, but I'm not shure. I built my own
udisks2-package, copying the sources of the latest upstream release into it
(udisks2, version 2.1.3) but it didn't help.

I found these related bugs:

[Bug 1392274] [NEW] wallpaper with multiple monitors incorrectly displays on login

2014-11-13 Thread Rowan
Public bug reported:

If I set up a wallpaper with either the Zoom or Centre options under
Appearance in System Settings with two monitors then after logging in,
my laptop screen seems to display incorrectly. With zoom, the laptop
screen zooms the image too much (perhaps to match the zoom for the
resolution of the second screen?) and with centre, it shrunk the
horizontal sides (left black bars) of the wallpaper displayed on the
laptop screen in one instance, though I'm not sure of the behaviour (the
image size matched the screen resolution, which is why it was weird).

This only starts happening *after* login. The wallpaper is displayed
correctly in the login screen until the desktop is shown. I *think* the
external monitor is unaffected, but the laptop wallpaper changes look
after login.

Laptop screen resolution: 1366x768
Separate monitor resolution: 1280x1024
Wallpaper size: 1366x768 (Though this does persist with other image
resolutions, e.g. 1920x1080 zooms into a tiny part of the image on the laptop
screen rather than zooming out).

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Unity 7.2.3 (Started happening just after update to this version)
... full information has apparently been grabbed by Apport.

Sorry about the verbosity.
