[Bug 1460434] [NEW] System Freeze On Low Memory
Public bug reported: System freeze occurs when memory is almost full and there is no chance to kill processes. Everything is unresponsive, hdd is trashing, even ssh connection does not show any reaction. I set vm.swappiness = 1 to minimize swapping but those lock ups are still there. I think this could be related to disk caching. Few times I observed in iotop that several processes use %90+ disk I/O while memory is close to its limit. I increased vm.min_free_kbytes (default value was 65536) but not tested yet. Current disk scheduler is set to deadline. Diab, thank you for taking the time to report this and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, this report didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs . We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. The behavior you expected, and 3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 1362848] Re: ubuntu 14.04 after install nvidia binary driver 331.89 black screen and freeze
Hello everybody! As many others users, I get a black screen when I try to switch on the nvidia card. I am just a user, therefore I just give my feedback. I use nvidia-prime and the nvidia drivers coming from the ppa xorg-edgers ppa. I use also prime-indicator for quickly switch between the nvidia (GTX880M) and the intel card and my login manager is lightdm. First comment, for me the black screen issue doesn't comes from the driver but of nvidia-prime. My first suggestion to solve the black screen. Using the the root privilege edit the file /sbin/prime-offload and just replace the first line #!/bin/sh by #!/bin/bash. Now, you can use the command: prime-select nvidia (or intel) and reboot your laptop. Normally, now you can switch between the two cards but the quick switch of prime-indicator doesn't work. For the next step, I don't have a real solution but just a workaround: With the root privilege edit the files /usr/lib/primeindicator/igpuon and /usr/lib/primeindicator/dgpuon and just before sync insert this line: service lightdm restart So you get this for the file igpuon: prime-select intel service lightdm restart sync And you get this for the file igpuon: prime-select nvidia service lightdm restart sync I hope that this feed-back will be helpful to other people. ++ Kirby -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1362848 Title: ubuntu 14.04 after install nvidia binary driver 331.89 black screen and freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-331/+bug/1362848/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1460313] Re: webcam indicator LED remains lit after resume from suspend
Hans109h, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.1-rc5 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ? [Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade
Please disregard my previous message. The bug is definitely there. In some cases it does not manifest immediately. Conversely, it is quite frequent to see the IOWAIT close to zero at system startup. Then after a while the system is up, the IOWAIT jumps for no reason at about 50% and stays there. When this happens, nothing is initially reported in dmesg/syslog. However the system starts showing some issues. 1) Trying to mount the zip drive, namely sudo mount /dev/sda /mnt/tmp hangs forever. The process cannot be interrupted. Interestingly, this happens even if there is no disk in the drive, a situation that the kernel should see immediately, even before trying the mount action. When the hang occurs, the kernel starts complaining in dmesg about a hung process: [11877.606063] INFO: task mount:14652 blocked for more than 120 seconds. [Bug 1460481] [NEW] Software Updater Installs Unselected Packages
Public bug reported: There were a whole bunch of updates available after a fresh install. I selected ONLY Ubuntu base and ecryptfs, however while watching the detailed progress output, I saw other packages downloading and unpacking like facebook plugin and libreoffice related packages even though I KNOW I deselected them. Perhaps the deselected items HAD to be installed because of other selected updates such as something in Ubuntu-base changed so an unselected item needed to upgrade as well due to a dependent incompatibility. If that were the case, I would expect a notification. rwmarch, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. [Bug 1460328] Re: Parts of screen out of view
Gavin Rey, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/CROSSHAIR_V_FORMULAZ/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2201). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed. [Bug 1459149] Re: keyboard and mouse not responding at login
I have tried reverse bisecting but unfortunately the bug does not always appear in versions = 3.13.2. This makes it very hard and incredibly time consuming (for me at least) to conclusively determine which commit is the first one that solves the bug. As far as I am concerned, I'll leave it here. I am happy that the bug is resolved on my pc and I thank penalvch for his suggestion. If there are simple, less time consuming ways of further resolving this issue I would not mind looking into it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1459149 Title: keyboard and mouse not responding at login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1459149/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
