[Bug 1648292] Re: Running Mir-Server snap, gives error! [Unknown command line options: --vt 1]
Please let us know what the "Selected driver" log message was. Or better yet, attach the full log output. A similar error was encountered in bug 1355005 and although that bug is unclear it seems to generally be a case of Mir selecting a driver other than mesa-kms, and if that happens then such other drivers will reject the --vt 1 option. So if you Raspberry Pi is selecting the mesa-kms driver then yes we have a Mir bug. If it's not and is somehow selecting the Android driver instead (and if that actually works) only then is it a bug in the snap (should not be passing --vt 1). ** Changed in: mir Status: New => Incomplete ** Changed in: mir (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1648292 Title: Running Mir-Server snap, gives error! [Bug 1648312] [NEW] discovered an unintentional extra feature in the spread aka task switcher
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu Touch 15.04 (r480) on Meizu MX4. The spread gesture is drag from the right edge to the left. Only today I was doing the gesture slowly only to discover, what I thought was an extra feature, in the windowed mode: the gesture, if only performed mid-way, and then discontinued, would execute a cross-fade transition between the current window and the next window in the z-order queue, and then switch to that window WITHOUT going to the full spread. Later I tried to reproduce only to learn that it is not easy, because the gesture has to be discontinued very very precisely, otherwise the full spread mode will kick in. Obviously now, I understand that this is not really a feature, rather an undocumented behavior of sort. But I like it. Perhaps this could be tuned, to the point where it can become an ACTUAL feature, that users could take advantage of? [Bug 1648303] [NEW] wifi saved networks don't have effect, despite being listed
Public bug reported: I hesitated to file this bug for approx a week because none else seemed to report simillar issue, and felt like I was dealing with some weird edge case. But: When I connect to password protected wifi access point the network gets saved in System Settings / Wi-Fi / Previous Networks. Despite it being saved, it never seems to take any effect once disconnected form the saved network, and returning to it. It will ask me for password over and over again, and also save it over and over again under Wi-Fi/Previous networks, with the same name but suffixed with an ever increasing index. In the attached screen you can see "sd 3" and "sd3 1" but it would go on and on to probably "sd3 99" and beyond. My phone is Meizu MX4. I was using r478 earlier today, which was already 2-3 updates through since I started seeing this problem, and it persisted. I reflashed my phone to some old double digit release (i think r79), and it worked. Then I updated, this time I was already directly updated to r480, which I am currently on, but the problem returned. The attached screen is taken under r480. [Bug 1609475] Re: Recovery mode won't allow recovery after manually installing the OS incorrectly
I just ran into this issue with Bento Box's 64-bit image for 16.04. We were trying to boot into recovery mode in order to run `zerofree` prior to packaging up a custom box for internal use (per steps from https://snippets.khromov.se/shrinking-a-virtualbox-linux-image-with- zerofree/). I can confirm this is a systemd-specific issue. We booted normally, followed instructions under "Permanent switch back to upstart" in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers, and rebooted, which successfully removed systemd. We then booted into Recovery Mode and had no interruptions or strange boot behavior (though there was an error about not being able to start "User Service" on the boot after installing Upstart). Prior to removing systemd, the behavior @b-candler described is exactly what we were seeing -- after about 1 to 2 mins, it seems like systemd gets impatient and starts booting the system normally, bringing up networking, etc, AND THEN starts the recovery menu and recovery shell on top of an existing session. After another few minutes, you actually get a third one on top of that. If you can actually brave the storm and get to a prompt, running `init 1` will cause a system hang. Looks like Ubuntu is not alone here: - https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/5dug3e/linux_mint_recovery_mode_crashingtiming_out/ - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=232329 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1609475 Title: Recovery mode won't allow recovery after manually installing the OS incorrectly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1609475/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The test PC has a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install with all updates. The wifi interface name is wlp1s0 and there is no wired ethernet hw in the PC. First tests done before installing the test ppa. The tests where run in the exact sequence as listed. The "killall nm-applet && nm-applet & exit" will make the nm-applet work ok, but only until next disabling event be it suspend/resume, hw switch off/on or sw disable/enable. In addition to this documented test I have experienced the two problem symptoms (no wifi connection and or incorrect network icon and no APs listed in the nm-applet) on 7 different PCs all with Ubuntu 16.04 with latest updates. All the PCs have different HW (incl wifi) and are of widely different ages. In fact I only have one PC that has not exhibited any of the problems. That PC is running Lubuntu 16.04. It is my experience that the "sudo service network-manager restart" command will correct the problem situation about 70% of the times and when that command is not correcting the problem the "killall nn-applet && nm-applet & exit" command will correct the problem in most of the remaining cases, however there are a few occasions when neither command will correct the situation. [Bug 1603072] Re: [MIR] libsmbios
Seth, In Ubuntu it's going to be used for two purposes: fwupd, and fwupdate. Although the library features functionality that could be used for RBU firmware flashing, that feature is not going to be used in Ubuntu. The strategy for Dell client systems BIOS updates is to continue to use UEFI capsule which you have already verified the stack previously. Here's how it will be used in Ubuntu: fwupdate For fwupdate, the code is used to query and activate tokens. The code for that was added since after you reviewed fwupdate last year. This functionality can be seen here: https://github.com/rhinstaller/fwupdate/blob/master/linux/libfwup.c#L130 It's used when a user queries if the system supports firmware updates and the ESRT is not available. It can be used two ways: 1) from the fwupdate command line tool (as root) 2) from fwupd using libfwup and calling those same function calls. In the case of fwupd using libfwup, the code that uses it is available here: https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/blob/master/src/fu-provider-uefi.c#L241 The user would need to call the unlock function using fwupdmgr or gnome-software. Policykit would authenticate them and fwupd would use libfwup to do the unlock (which will adjust those token values). fwupd - For fwupd, libsmbios is used for the following functions: 0) as mentioned above, unlocking ESRT table from token. 1) parsing SMBIOS tables to determine if it's usable on the system and if flashes were successful. Example: https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/blob/master/src/fu-provider-dell.c#L672 2) Executing SMI's to put the CPU into SMM and read information about embedded TPM and connected docks. Example, but there are others: https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/blob/master/src/fu-provider-dell.c#L759 3) Executing a SMI that will put the dock into a flashing mode to accept a runtime payload. Example: https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/blob/master/src/fu-provider-dell.c#L1087 I'm not sure how much of the architecture you recall about fwupd, but I'll give you the 100 ft view as a reminder. fwupd is a d-bus activated daemon. fwupdmgr and gnome-software communicate over d-bus with fwupd. fwupd supports "providers" as plugins that activate functionality for different types of firmware flashing and querying. A special Dell plugin was created that uses libsmbios for querying TPM and dock information specifically. So a user will query from fwupdmgr for supported devices and fwupd will run a routine in all it's providers to see what devices are available. This will cause for example a few SMI requests when fwupd is first started to see the information on the TPM on the system if applicable. Please feel free to double check everything, but all of the inputs that get passed through SMI in these cases are hardcoded into fwupd code and can't be passed an untrusted input. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1603072 Title: [MIR] libsmbios To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsmbios/+bug/1603072/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1603072] Re: [MIR] libsmbios
Mario, could you walk me through how this library is going to be used? - What processes use this library? - How are they started? - What user interaction do they have? How about their parents? - What controls are in place to avoid operating on untrusted inputs? I'm worried that the tool may not be suitable for unattended undirected automated use when fed malicious inputs. If inputs can be determined to only come via cryptographically signed sources we may be able to work with this tool all the same. (I'd feel most comfortable if the instructions here were, "download a new bios from https://support.dell.com/... ; gpg --import verylongkeyhash ; gpg --verify bios.gpg bios && updatebios ./bios". Any amount of automation beyond that has me worried.) [Bug 1598312] Re: Cannot scale AMD Turion CPU frequency. It runs on lowest 800MHz
The revert of the offending commit does not apply cleanly to the Ubuntu-4.4.0-47.68 kernel. The closest we can get to a revert is this patch: diff --git a/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c b/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c index 64f233a..aec995c 100644 --- a/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c +++ b/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c @@ -2523,7 +2523,6 @@ void __init setup_ioapic_dest(void) const struct cpumask *mask; struct irq_desc *desc; struct irq_data *idata; - struct irq_chip *chip; if (skip_ioapic_setup == 1) return; @@ -2538,7 +2537,6 @@ void __init setup_ioapic_dest(void) continue; desc = irq_to_desc(irq); - raw_spin_lock_irq(>lock); idata = irq_desc_get_irq_data(desc); /* @@ -2549,11 +2547,7 @@ void __init setup_ioapic_dest(void) else mask = apic->target_cpus(); - chip = irq_data_get_irq_chip(idata); - /* Might be lapic_chip for irq 0 */ - if (chip->irq_set_affinity) - chip->irq_set_affinity(idata, mask, false); - raw_spin_unlock_irq(>lock); + irq_set_affinity(irq, mask); } } #endif I tried this and it works. Another option is this smaller patch: diff --git a/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c b/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c index 64f233a..f185a1e 100644 --- a/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c +++ b/arch/x86/kernel/apic/io_apic.c @@ -2523,7 +2523,6 @@ void __init setup_ioapic_dest(void) const struct cpumask *mask; struct irq_desc *desc; struct irq_data *idata; - struct irq_chip *chip; if (skip_ioapic_setup == 1) return; @@ -2549,10 +2548,7 @@ void __init setup_ioapic_dest(void) else mask = apic->target_cpus(); - chip = irq_data_get_irq_chip(idata); - /* Might be lapic_chip for irq 0 */ - if (chip->irq_set_affinity) - chip->irq_set_affinity(idata, mask, false); + irq_set_affinity_locked(idata, mask, false); raw_spin_unlock_irq(>lock); } } which essentially keeps the raw_spin_lock_irq()/raw_spin_unlock_irq() rather than raw_spin_lock_irqsave()/raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore() used by __irq_set_affinity() in kernel/irq/manage.c . I tested both patches on top of Ubuntu-4.4.0-47.68 and they work. They also apply cleanly to Ubuntu-4.2.0-42.49 but I didn't actually check that it builds/works. I tried manually inlining the irq_set_affinity_locked() (which required further inlining of some helper functions and providing a declaration of irq_do_set_affinity()) and it still worked. However, forcing the "if (irq_can_move_pcntxt())" path that immediately performs "chip->irq_set_affinity(idata, mask, false)" exposes the bug. This confirms what I expected after reading https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/3/26/392 . Basically, when the hardware says that you cannot do something right away, you really cannot. And the offending commit just ignores this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1598312 Title: Cannot scale AMD Turion CPU frequency.
