[Bug 1643533] Re: Frequent kernel panic crashes in Linux KVM guest (happens on different host hardware, so hardware fault unlikely)

2016-12-08 Thread Jonas Thiem
It appears as if the issue is NOT present in mainline 4.9-rc7. I will
wait a few more days to be sure before marking this 'kernel-fixed-
upstream', since the bug always appeared in a varying interval of 2-5
days, just to get a higher level of confidence.

[Bug 361804] Re: most dumps core when viewing file

2016-12-08 Thread Oskar Wallgren
I don't see the core dump either but the file doesn't open correctly.

>>$ file initgroups.patch2
>>initgroups.patch2: RCS/CVS diff output, ASCII text, with CR line terminators

Your file has a 0Dh line terminator and is probably made on a Apple
Macintosh OS 9 or earlier.

The quick fix for anyone who runs into a problem like this is to open
the file in a text editor that reads it (gedit/pluma) and save as and
there will be an option to choose line ending for Linux/Unix. I'll probe
into this and see if there are other bug reports out there.

2016-12-08 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1603072] Re: [MIR] libsmbios

2016-12-08 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed libsmbios version 2.3.1-0ubuntu1 as checked into Yakkety. This
should not be considered a full security audit but rather a quick check of
maintainability.

- libsmbios provides libraries and utilities for working with Dell BIOS
- No CVEs in our database

- The library is used by fwupd and fwupdate
- Build-Depends: debhelper, autotools-dev, libcppunit-dev, doxygen,
  graphviz, python, chrpath, libxml2-dev, pkg-config, autoconf, automake,
  libtool, autopoint
- provides the following binaries and symlinks in /usr/sbin:
  -rwxr-xr-x root/root dellBiosUpdate-compat
  -rwxr-xr-x root/root dellLEDCtl

- Build logs have hundreds of warnings

- No subprocesses spawned in C/C++ code
- Subprocesses spawned in Python BackCompatRbu::doUpdate() looks unsafe
  but I think this is dead code
- Memory management is extremely difficult to decipher
  - "memory factory" is way too much trouble for whatever benefits it may
provide
  - many C++ operator new allocations are checked for NULL returns when
those would instead throw an exception
  - many memory-failure error pathways try to use facilities that would
fail when memory is scarce (gettext especially)
  - I suspect copy_mmap() / trycopy() / remap() is probably not safe
- files usually passed in as parameters, sometimes writing to current
  working directory
- logging looked fine, assuming the debug logs aren't enabled
- Environment variable handling looked fine

Here's my notes collected while reading the sources:

- /etc/yum/ -- etc/yum/pluginconf.d/dellsysid.conf is packaged in

- many binaries without manpages
- lintian warning about embedded js libraries in docs
- memory_obj_factory() appears to leak toReturn if either
  init_mem_struct_filename() or init_mem_struct() return failure
- smbios_table_factory() appears to leak toReturn if init_smbios_struct()
  fails
- ./src/bin/biosacpi.c main() assumes well-formatted input file; it looks
  vastly unsafe for 'arbitrary file' access.
- _init_cmos_std_stuff() (and elsewhere) try to use gettext() (via _()) in
  many error paths, including out-of-memory errors. This seems prone to
  failure.
- init_mem_struct_filename() strlen(errbuf) isn't protected by the
  if (errbuf) guard
- I'm just plain baffled with memory_obj_factory() and friends
- I'm just plain baffled with dell_smi_factory() and friends
- There's more const_cast<> and reinterpret_cast<> than I'm accustomed to
  seeing in C++ code
- There's a few hundred uses of deprecated std::auto_ptr.
- Some calls to new check result for non-NULL; but C++ throws an exception
  when 'new' fails (unless new (std::nothrow) is used); it might be worth
  re-examining the uses of 'new' to see if the std::nothrow variant should

2016-12-08 Thread Michi Henning
Michael, the command fails because /run/user/0/dbus-session doesn't exist.
I also looks like I have a different version installed. I see 264 and 277
(besides common) in /root/snap/unity8-session.

I adjusted your command to not set DBUS_SESSION_ADDRESS and explicitly
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH (without using snappyenv):

Ah, as in "BFG-9000" :-)

/var/crash doesn't exist on a snappy machine. I have no idea where core
dumps end up. It looks like core dumps are disabled. I can't find any
cores anywhere.

> If not, does running "ubuntu-app-launch-appids" on this system show
any snap results?

ubuntu-app-launch doesn't exist either.

I'm seeing an unhandled exception from the click scope.

Registry log: pastebin.ubuntu.com/23602020

I suspect that the exception isn't coming from one of the threads that
we hand to the scope. (We very carefully handle all exceptions that a
scope might throw.) It seems more likely that the exception comes from a
thread that wasn't created by the scopes run time.

The trail of exceptions from shutdown() is unsurprising because the
scopes runtime realises that something isn't right and just logs the
error.

unity8-dash log: pastebin.ubuntu.com/23602037

There is a line with "results invalidated". Not sure whether that is
significant.

Note that no network is present inside the core 16 VM. I don't know how
to get that working, and I don't know whether that relates to the crash.
I set up the VM following the instructions Kevin posted:

[Bug 1648687] [NEW] Error Installing lubuntu from scratch alongside Win 8.1

2016-12-08 Thread Alan
Public bug reported:

Attemt to upgrade from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.10

BAsic problem is:
Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu Mate installed on drive.
Downloaded Ubuntu 16.10 ISO from the Lubuntu web site and burned DVD.
Ran Lubuntu from Dvd, successful startup
Ran "Install Lubuntu" from desktop icon.

Before making this change I had Ubuntu Mate 15.10 installed next to
Windows 8.1. Boot from EFI file was required to enter Ubuntu.EVerything
else running normally.

Attempting to install Lubuntu 16.10 I got this same error twice.
First time I created Ubuntu 16.10 DVD and installed over the 15.10 install
directly from DVD and got this error near the finish. Ubuntu appeared to work
but was unavailable on reboot. Tried an EFI file boot but it only booted to
Grub.

Second time deleted all partitions on drive, installed Win 8.1 on 200GB
and then Lubuntu 16.10 to 100GB Partition and got the same error near
the finish. Nothing else on drive.

  PCS cluster setup hangs when cleaning up old cluster configurations,
  apparently due to a "find" command attempting to search through a fuse
  mountpoint directory (/var/lib/lxcfs/*).

  Destroying cluster on nodes: uby2, uby3...

  ---setup hangs here

  The setup seems to hang because of this line in /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-
  packages/pcs/cluste r.py (which attempts to delete stale cluster
  configuration xml files:

  os.system("find /var/lib -name '"+name+"' -exec rm -f \{\} \;")

  sudo find /var/lib -name 'cib-*' 2>&1 | grep 'Permission denied' | wc -l

  Changing this line to:
  os.system("find /var/lib/pacemaker -name '"+name+"' -exec rm -f \{\} \;") to
avoid searching under /var/lib/lxcfs (the fuse mountpoint) provided a
workaround for me.

[Bug 1648526] Re: Intel 8265 Bluetooth ([8087:0A2B]) fails to init properly on wakeup from hibernation

2016-12-08 Thread Leonard Lausen
Does the kernel from the ubuntu kernel ppa http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.9-rc8/ qualify as latest upstream kernel? As
far as I see it still contains ubuntu specific patches. Or shall I first
confirm this problem also occurs on the vanilla upstream kernel directly
built from the kernel.org?

[Bug 1640923] Re: pcs cluster auth does not generate "tokens" file

2016-12-08 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
I do agree that, since PCS can manage an existing installed cluster - I
haven't considered this for all my previous posts/comments/patches - PCS
installation should NOT try to take care of corosync/pacemaker files.

Whoever is dealing with PCS has to handle it properly AFTER
installation. Argument for that - from Maintainer - is this:

"this will always require some manual configuration"

And this is also true for corosync/pacemaker.

I'm abandoning changes for this specific bug and marking it as Opinion.
Will continue fix for other bugs in LP: #1640919.

And last statement is this (from Maintainer):

True, but there is another use-case where you install it on an existing
cluster to get a web interface. In this case you don't want it to touch
existing setup by default.

> Just trying to make PCS functional "by default" since now it will be
> used as the clustering configuration tool for MSSQL Linux HA and they

I would argue that pcs is functional as all three daemons are running:

 * corosync
 * pacemaker
 * pcsd

What is not functional is the cluster as a whole, but this will always
require some manual configuration as it spans more than one host and
we cannot handle that in packaging.

In your case you would need to run something like:

 pcs cluster destroy
 pcs cluster auth node1 node2
 pcs cluster setup --start --name cluster node1 node2
 pcs resource create ...

[Bug 1641300] Re: [needs-packaging] sgt-launcher

2016-12-08 Thread Sean Davis
Hello Mattia, thank you very much for your review. I've made a number of
improvements to the source as well as the packaging.

sgt-launcher 0.2.1 (https://launchpad.net/sgt-launcher/0.2/0.2.1)
* Install to PREFIX/games
* Improved manpage
* Add keywords to desktop file
* Upgraded license to GPL-3+
* Fix typo in sgt-launcher.desktop

Packaging
(https://launchpad.net/~bluesabre/+archive/ubuntu/sponsoring/+files/sgt-launcher_0.2.1-0ubuntu1.dsc)
* Copyright in the source was bumped to GPL3+
* Reenabled tests. I had previously disabled these for other python packages I
maintain because they caused build failures and incorrect dependencies. I
further researched this and resolved the issues within the packaging.
* debhelper bumped to 10
* Removed trailing whitespace
* Bumped changelog version and date
* Resolved all lintian overrides except desktop-command-not-in-package, added
an override (sgt-launcher adds diversions for each of the sgt-puzzles desktop
files)

The new package has been tested and uploaded to my sponsoring PPA.
Please let me know if there are any other changes that are needed.

[Bug 1217959] Re: 'metadata' file not found when creating backup ("Could not restore ‘/home/user /.cache/deja-dup/metadata’: File not found in backup"

2016-12-08 Thread Dabo Ross
I've worked around this by using a bind mount instead of a symlink.
Something like 'sudo mount --rbind /run/media/daboross/external/deja-
dup-cache ~/.cache/deja-dup' works. While I do have to re-do this every
time I mount the external drive and start a backup, it at least works.

If you also do a `chmod 500 ~/.cache/deja-dup` when it's unmounted,
deja-dup will be unable to write any files to the unmounted directory
and it will fail early - so you can then mount it and re-start the
backup.

[Bug 1648674] [NEW] xenial libertine package is uninstallable with libertine-manager-app installed

2016-12-08 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

following Breaks:

Replaces: libertine (<= 1.4.3+17.04.20161118.1-0ubuntu1)
Breaks: libertine (<= 1.4.3+17.04.20161118.1-0ubuntu1)

The latest xenial build is 1.4.3+16.04.20161121.2-0ubuntu1

So you can install libertine fine, and libertine-manager-app fine as
long as they aren't both installed.

lubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso is the only file that exhibits this
problem. All the rest work as expected. I have no further details.

[Bug 1648303] Re: wifi saved networks don't have effect, despite being listed

2016-12-08 Thread Kris
Jonas, you didn't quite understand me, I am using WiFi network just exactly
like everyone else does.
After I connect to WiFi protected network, it gets saved to >Previous
Networks<, which also happens normally.
The difference comes when I disconnect and return to the network:
- go to other network, then want to come back,
- turn off WiFi then come back
- airplane mode on/off
- physically move out of range, then come back,
- power off the phone, then power back on again
- so on so on, etc.

Normally my saved network would connect automatically. And even if it didn't it
would at least not ask for password again,. because it is already saved.
Not in my case, not anymore. Saved networks are physically saved like they
should, which my attached screen shows, but this takes no real effect.
I still am asked for password despite already having the network saved. And
after I do, I connect through, and the network gets saved AGAIN, multiplying
login information for the same networks over and over again. It keeps saving
these without ever making use of it.

[Bug 1648303] Re: wifi saved networks don't have effect, despite being listed

2016-12-08 Thread Kris
I even returned from rc-proposed to stable channel, currently on OTA-14 and
still affected. I reflashed my phone to come back to stable channel.
I don't understand this. Is there anything that may persist in the system
between two flashes of the phone? Because I even flashed back to r26 ancient
version and had the same problem. I used that ancient image many times when I
had problem with os, I would have reflashed back and make clean account setup
and clean update to most recent os from within.And it always worked. This time
even after going this way my problem persisted even while in that r26, which
was never the case before.

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security

[Bug 1648292] Re: Running Mir-Server snap, gives error! [Unknown command line options: --vt 1]

2016-12-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Even if we don't have the kernel support in place yet I think Mir could
still do better.

What the user sees is:
Unknown command line options: --vt 1

What that means is:
A non-mesa-kms graphics driver was chosen (or none at all? can't tell). And
that's not even a bug at all if some working driver has been found. It's
presently a bug in the snap to pass a driver-specific option (--vt), but I
would also argue that should not be true and the snap should be allowed to
(along with LightDM). VT support should be generally available and not buried
in just one graphics driver. Then the above error will never happen again
(we've been hitting it for years now).

[Bug 1589644] Re: [SRU] biber 2.4 to xenial

2016-12-08 Thread Nick Andrik
Hi Eduardo,

What versions are you trying to install?
In a fresh installation of yakkety, both of biber and texlive-extra can be
installed fine for me:

nikos@ubuntu:/> cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=yakkety
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.10"
nikos@ubuntu:/> dpkg --list|grep -e biber -e texlive-bibtex-extra
ii  biber   2.5-1  all
Much-augmented BibTeX replacement for BibLaTeX users
ii  texlive-bibtex-extra2016.20160819-1all
TeX Live: BibTeX additional styles

It would help if you could post the error you are getting.

Kindest regards,
Nikos

[Bug 1217959] Re: 'metadata' file not found when creating backup ("Could not restore ‘/home/user /.cache/deja-dup/metadata’: File not found in backup"

2016-12-08 Thread Felipe Castillo
I have this exact same problem. I tried creating an empty metadata file so it
can write over it, but that didn't work.
I decided to symlink only the folder inside '.cache/deja-dup', the folder named
6724d3f170e0390931977a130c2b7632. I thought by leaving the deja-dup folder, it
will be able to write the metadata file but still have everything else symlink
somewhere else. It didn't work, and it was nasty. As soon as I tried to ran a
manual backup (from the GUI, of course) I saw this error:

"Specified archive directory '/home/[user]/.cache/deja-
dup/6724d3f170e0390931977a130c2b7632' does not exist, or is not a
directory"

Well, I guess it's technically not a directory, it's a symlink to one.

Has anybody come up with a workaround for this? Anything?
