[Bug 1575241] Re: package kodi (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/xsessions/kodi.desktop', which is also in package kodi-data 15.2+dfsg1-3ubuntu1

2017-09-01 Thread Eric Lebrun
I just recently had the same problem. I solved the problem by removing
kodi-data particularly, however doing "apt-get autoremove" removed the
kodi-data after I removed kodi and kodi-bin versions 15.2 then I was
able to install the latest version 17.4 with out that error occuring.

Hope this helps someone.

[Bug 1674868] Re: Fuse-ext2 deadlocks on creating symlinks

2017-09-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Uploaded to Trusty, Xenial, Zesty, and Artful. For the stable releases,
it's sitting in the Unapproved queue, for Artful it's building and will
migrate like normal.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

+  * Any attempt to create/overwrite symlinks in a partition mounted by
  fuseext2 causes the fuseext2 process to deadlock, preventing the mounted
  filesystem from being used at all until the userspace process is killed
  and the filesystem is remounted.

  [Test Case]

-  * dd if=/dev/zero of=partition bs=1M count=200

  [Regression Potential]

- * Since this changes the locking strategy of the code to hold locks less,
the main risk is exposing a case where data can be accessed in a non-threadsafe
manner, leading to unexpected behaviour.
- * The places where the change has been made are at the exit points of the
function, and match where similar unlocks are made in other places in the code.

kernel data leakage is minimal.

the only upstream I could find is https://github.com/alperakcan/fuse-ext2 but
that doesn't have any locking code at all (even in the reentrant branch) so I
can't see where this issue came from.

  [Original Description]

  Trying to create a symlink in a filesystem mounted by fuseext2 causes
  the fuseext2 userspace process to deadlock before responding to the fuse
  request. This is simply due to a code bug in fuse-ext2/op_link.c (lines
  104 and 109) where the code calls FUSE_EXT2_LOCK rather than
  FUSE_EXT2_UNLOCK on exiting the function.

  I've confirmed that making that changes allows me to create symlinks
  happily on the mounted filesystem. The bug appears to exist upstream
  too.

[Bug 711061] Re: [MIR] openjpeg2

[Bug 1108935] Re: [MIR] websockify, spice-html5

2017-09-01 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed spice-html5 version 0.1.7-1 as checked into Debian unstable.
This should not be considered a full security audit. It's even pretty
sparse by my usual standards.

spice-html5 is a unique package -- its contents mostly don't influence
the machine where it is installed. It's also a huge amount of JavaScript,
which isn't a language that the security team knows well.

The upstream git repository appears moderately active, multiple patch
authors, none of the commits that I inspected looked embarrassing. The
initial git import was five years ago and 40k lines.

spice-html5 doesn't seem like an obvious undue risk but the point remains
that the security team isn't staffed to support web applications. We may
need support from elsewhere in the company to address issues raised here.

I tried linting the codebase with jslint.com. Some of the files came
through with minor-feeling quibbles and some files had faults on every
single line. I hope this says more about my expectations about JavaScript
linters than the code quality.

jslint.com reports
- don't use single-quote strings
- don't use 'this'
- don't declare vars in a loop body
- positively hates enums.js atKeynames.js
.. stopped here when I suspect this isn't the right tool for the job

Security team ACK for promoting spice-html5 to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1108935] Re: [MIR] websockify, spice-html5

2017-09-01 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed websockify version 0.8.0+dfsg1-7ubuntu1 as checked into artful.
This should not be considered a full security audit but rather a quick
gauge of maintainability.

Websockify has no CVEs in our database

- Websockify provides a daemon to turn arbitrary TCP sockets into
  "websockets" suitable for use with browsers. Typically JS in the
  browsers would then implement whatever protocol is being converted.

  There's multiple implementations of this tool in this package. The C
  version is not suitable for main. It does not appear to be built in this
  package, so I'd like to ask for this file to either be deleted or
  patched to add a poison pill like:

#error See https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1108935 before using this
file

- rebind will LD_PRELOAD symbol shadow bind() to force a program to
  listen on a different port

- Build-Depends: debhelper, dh-python, openstack-pkg-tools, python-dev,
  python-mox3, python-nose, python-numpy, python-setuptools, python3-dev,
  python3-mox3, python3-nose, python3-numpy, python3-setuptools,

- pre/post inst/rm commands install or remove 'websockify' alternatives
- websockify/websocket.py daemonize() implementation looks good; C
  daemonize() does not.
- No initscripts / systemd service files
- No dbus services
- No setuid
- python3-websockify, python2-websockify, and rebind executables in PATH
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- Some tests appear to be run during the build
- No cronjobs
- Clean build logs

- Python subprocesses spawned fine
- Python file management looked fine
- Python logging looked fine
- Python networking looked fine
- Python privileged syscall handling looked fine
- No webkit
- No javascript
- No policykit

One question about the python code:

- ./websockify/websocket.py daemonize() sets umask(0), is this the best
  setting?

A packaging bug:

- /usr/lib/websockify/rebind.o appears in the websockify package, why?

A Debian standards-compliance bug:

- /usr/bin/rebind in the websockify package has no manpage

And a long list of reasons why the C version of the program is not
suitable for use. This list is not exhaustive, I stopped after finding
this many issues:

- ./other/websockify.c main() settings.listen_host and target_host
buffer overflow

- ./other/websocket.c alloc_ws_ctx() doesn't check ctx->headers allocation
  failure as it does other allocations

- ./other/websocket.c free_ws_ctx() doesn't free ctx->headers as it does
  other allocations

- ./other/websocket.c parse_hixie76_key() divide by zero if key includes
  no spaces (BTW this for loop is O(N^2) unless the compiler hoists out
  the strlen(key) call)

- ./other/websocket.c ws_socket_ssl() msg buffer overflows via use_keyfile
  and certfile parameters

- ./other/websocket.c do_handshake() handshake buffer underflow -- use of
  recv(2) return value as an array index without doing any error checking

- ./other/websocket.c parse_handshake() buffer overflows for:
  - headers->origin
  - headers->version
  - headers->key1
  - headers->connection
  - headers->protocols
  - headers->key2

- ./other/websocket.c daemonize() setgid(getgid());

- ./other/websocket.c daemonize() setuid(getuid());

- ./other/websocket.c daemonize() sets umask(0), is this the best
setting?

websocket.c and websockify.c issues not exhaustive

Security team ACK for promoting websockify to main on several conditions:

- other/websockify.c and other/websocket.c MUST be patched with an:
#error See https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1108935 before using this file

- please remove /usr/lib/websockify/rebind.o from the package

Thanks

[Bug 1714596] Re: PDF images are blank

2017-09-01 Thread Bryan Quigley
Downgrading* to poppler on zesty-updates fixed the issue, looks like
it's an Ubuntu specific poppler regression.

*get and install zesty versions and it's fixed
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/p/poppler/libpoppler-cpp0v5_0.48.0-2ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/p/poppler/poppler-utils_0.48.0-2ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

** Package changed: evince (Ubuntu) => poppler (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

  1. Download this PDF -
http://www.dvrpc.org/Connections2045/pdf/2045_DRAFT_Plan_for_Public_Comment.pdf
  2. Open in Evince, note how first page is blank

  Open with Firefox and note how it displays a nice intro page.

  Ubuntu 17.04 LiveCD works fine
  Ubuntu 17.10 LiveCD does not

  For Evince Zesty (3.24.0) vs Artful (3.24.1) which might be any easy thing to
rule out. (I also tried the artful -proposed evince which has the issue too)
  For Poppler Zesty (0.48.0) vs Artful (0.57.0) so my guess is bug is in
poppler.

- My planned next steps
- 1. Rule out Evince (test other version) or find something else that uses
poppler to confirm
- 2. Rule it being an Ubuntu specific issue
- 2. Ideally bisect if a poppler bug a bit more
- 3. Report an upstream bug
+ Given my testing in Fedora (C#2) which worked fine with same version of
+ poppler and by downgrading the packages I believe this a Ubuntu specific
+ poppler bug.

How to reproduce the symptom:

#Nautilus (Maximized)

Steps:

1. Open nautilus.
2. Maximize it.

4. Drag it.

Observe:

Nautilus' window becomes small and moves with the "Preference" dialog
box.

#Nautilus (Un-maximized)

1. Open nautilus.
2. Un-maximize it, or keep it un-maximized.
3. Open "Preference" dialog box.
4. Drag it.

2017-09-01 Thread Scott Emmons
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

Public bug reported:

Having changed the language of Ubuntu from french to english, and have set the
admin to login without a password, I have added a password to the admin
account. However, at the login page, I am not prompted a password when logging

Verified that the commit is applied in the zesty's kernel master-next

>From what I can see, the new version of the kodi package did not come
from Ubuntu repositories [1]. When installing newer versions of packages
from other sources, you may have some additional work to do to keep the
system in a consistent state. Often, new major versions of a package
will include refactoring of files between packages, or this package
(being from another source) simply packages kodi in a completely
different manner than the Ubuntu build packages.

There are a couple of potential solutions to this:

1. Stick with the version provided in the Ubuntu repositories (this version
will not change, so you'll likely be missing additional features due to it
being an older version).
2. Completely purge all existing kodi packages first, then re-install the
packages from the 3rd party source. Don't assume an upgrade will work. The
folks who are providing this package might want to consider documenting how
best to install it.

[1] In the attached DpkgTerminalLog.txt I see this "Unpacking kodi
(2:16.1~git20160425.1001-final-0xenial) over (15.2+dfsg1-3ubuntu1) ..."
and "2:16.1~git20160425.1001-final-0xenial" is not a version string from
Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 1569925] Re: Shutdown hang on 16.04 with iscsi targets

2017-09-01 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
2 things for previous comment #75:

1)
I pasted wrong pastebin URL. I'll describe the fix: its a service unit file
that runs at the end of shutdown, right before it, re-using /run (tmpfs).
Service has a preparation script that copies binaries from initrd image - so
there is a minimum execution environment available - and runs the second
script. Second script initializes iscsid daemon and waits in a loop for all the
portals to be ONLINE and existing sessions to be LOGGED. After that it does the
logout on all existing sessions (this case this would be leftovers from my
previous comment AND / root disks).

2)
I tested this approach and it works good for iscsi root disks because there is
a network interface that stays connected all the time. In the case of leftovers
from previous unsuccessful umount attempts, the network.target would be already
gone (with networkd / ifupdown interfaces already shutdown). IF I keep my
interfaces configured, then this approach works for root disks AND for
leftovers. For this approach to be successful for this case, this "cleanup"
service would have to raise existing interfaces up again for the iscsid to
login and logout to work (OR the kernel hang be resolved, then leftovers would
be just left there, without logouts).

[Bug 1714602] [NEW] ieee-data cron fails every month because it DDoSes an upstream website

2017-09-01 Thread Lukas Erlacher
Public bug reported:

This is a known and fixed upstream bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=826104

The package tries to update its data every month from an apparently not
so strong host, causing a classic thundering horde DDoS.

Debian fixed this by deciding the cronjob wasn't such a good idea after
all and simply removing it.

The fixed version of the package is in zesty and above, while xenial
still has a bad version.

[Bug 1714489] Re: Can't translate singular

2017-09-01 Thread Anthony Harrington
Ran into same issue and now see a couple of our bug reports so I've
linked them as duplicates of yours.

Problem can be solved simply by changing the both "1" in "1 Livepatch
update applied since the last restart." (i.e. string 8)

and also

the "1" in "1 Livepatch update failed to apply since the last restart."
(i.e. string 9)

to "%d" instead.

(Thus there are 2 values to use for the two % len(fixes))

[Bug 1714599] [NEW] small translation bug

Similar issue to bug 1170903,
There are 2 new strings holding up completion.

and

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/artful/+source/update-

They can't be completed because of the following warning:

format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr[0]' for argument 1 are not
the same

Looking at the code quickly, lines 163 and 171 of Dialogs.py in the
UpdateManager folder, aren't these two cases of one too many "len(fixes)"s?
Shouldn't there just be one in each of the two blocks to go with the one "%d"

[Bug 1696154] Re: [17.10 FEAT] Sign POWER host/NV kernels

2017-09-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Does IBM have any feedback for us regarding the test kernel Andy
provided?

We have generated an online signing key to be included in db for OPAL.
In the absence of feedback about whether 4096-bit keys are supported, we
have generated a 2048-bit key.

Our current plan for secure delivery of the public key to IBM is to
deliver the keys in person to George next month. Does this timeline fit
IBM's needs for receipt of the public keys? Does it meet your
expectations for a trust path for the keys, or is there another protocol
that should be used?

In your reply of August 1, you wrote:

> However, in order to add a certificate to DB, the certificate should be
> signed by any of the KEK entries. The PK will be used to authorize updates
> to the KEK certificate list.

Can you please clarify if this means you are expecting the db entry to
be delivered as an x509 certificate issued by the CA key listed in KEK,
or if it should be delivered according to the format defined in the UEFI
spec for authenticated variable updates?

Fedora rawhide (or 27) with poppler 0.57 and evince 3.25.91 displays the
pictures fine.

[Bug 1714596] [NEW] PDF images are blank

2017-09-01 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

1. Download this PDF -
http://www.dvrpc.org/Connections2045/pdf/2045_DRAFT_Plan_for_Public_Comment.pdf
2. Open in Evince, note how first page is blank

Open with Firefox and note how it displays a nice intro page.

Ubuntu 17.04 LiveCD works fine
Ubuntu 17.10 LiveCD does not

For Evince Zesty (3.24.0) vs Artful (3.24.1) which might be any easy thing to
rule out. (I also tried the artful -proposed evince which has the issue too)
For Poppler Zesty (0.48.0) vs Artful (0.57.0) so my guess is bug is in poppler.

My planned next steps
1. Rule out Evince (test other version) or find something else that uses
poppler to confirm
2. Rule it being an Ubuntu specific issue
2. Ideally bisect if a poppler bug a bit more
3. Report an upstream bug

[Bug 1714505] Re: systemd kmod builtin uses out of date kmod context

2017-09-01 Thread Dan Streetman
yep, having up to 3 seconds worth of stale system data is too much time.
Also, I think the builtins can just validate themselves - for example
the kmod builtin can trivially call kmod_validate_resource(ctx) every
time it's asked to load a module, and I think the other builtins that
implement .validate probably also can self-validate too, and remove the
udev_builtin_validate() call entirely.

I have a small draft patch just to the kmod builtin that I'm testing:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ddstreet/+git/systemd/+ref/sf149300

I'll take another look next week to see if it can be expanded to cover
all the builtins that do validation, and submit something upstream for
discussion.

[Bug 1682410] Re: ecryptfs-utils not working properly with linux kernel 4.8.0-41-generic

2017-09-01 Thread Redsandro
I think the problem only exists for unencrypted filenames that would
previously pass (by default or) by passing the ecryptfs_passthrough
option.

Unencrypted filenames work as expected on kernels <=4.4, but are
inaccessable and listed as in kernels >=4.8.

I've tried the mount option ecryptfs_passthrough=yes,
ecryptfs_passthrough=y and ecryptfs_passthrough in the commandline:

sudo /bin/mount -it ecryptfs /tmp/.files /tmp/files -o
ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=32,ecryptfs_enable_filename_crypto=yes,ecryptfs_passthrough,ecryptfs_sig=a1b2c3...,ecryptfs_fnek_sig=a1b2c3...)

[Bug 1708559] Re: File system support list shows no icons

2017-09-01 Thread Michael MacEachern
Well as stated, a simple fix to /etc/environment was all I needed to do,
and now it works, along with other QT apps run as sudo (like how
partitionmanager acts when run from the menu) that were seemingly
missing icons and themes.

Seems like there's a problem elsewhere, as my fix also fixed a handful
of other programs with one line of text.

tools.git/commit/?id=ac6d31fc2c707b72ff8af9944c9b4f8af303a6a3 - I would
be happy to make a patch for this commit to xenial (zesty and later has
