Github reply uncovered that I had no idea what this does :-/ Topic vmxnet
(deprecated) vs vmxnet3.
OTOH - Debian packaging might have had a reason to keep it, so I'll need to
report there and let them decide if dropping or fixing is the right choice.

[Bug 1738697] [NEW] gnome-logs messages are hard to read with global dark theme turned on

2017-12-17 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

With global dark theme turned on (eg via gnome-tweek-tool) and a theme
that supports it (eg Adwaita or Numix), if you run gnome-logs and click
on an entry that has multiple lines it, the lines appear but are pretty
much unreadable because they are drawn in only a slightly different
shade of grey compared to the background (see attached screenshot for an
example).

[Bug 730159] Re: ffmpeg library configuration mismatch

2017-12-17 Thread VanillaMozilla
Please, I hope you DO fix it. I understand the reluctance to remove a
needed message, but I would hope the spuriousness could be removed.

Programs like ffmpeg and avconv are used simply because they are darned
useful. They often accomplish in seconds what front end apps can't do
at all. Contrary to what you might think, I don't know if I'm average,
but like many people, I find it hard enough--extremely hard, in fact--to
deal with real messages, never mind the spurious ones. It's awfully
nice if this stuff just works.

[Bug 1576799] Re: Regression: 2:4.3.8+dfsg-0ubuntu0.14.04.2 Failed to Issue the StartTLS instruction

2017-12-17 Thread Arjit
I have updated /etc/ldap/ldap.conf:
to
TLS_REQCERT hard

and run ldapsearch as below.

ldapsearch -x -ZZ -h hostname -p 389 -D
cn=administrator,cn=users,dc=techmint,dc=lan -w  -b
'dc=techmint,dc=lan'

I got output as expected.

then i run
net ads join -U Administrator% -d 12

I got same issue.

TLS: hostname (IP) does not match common name in certificate (hostname).

After changing
/etc/ldap/ldap.conf:
to
TLS_REQCERT Allow

i am getting other issue which i have mentioned earlier.
Sign or Seal are required.>, res_matched: <>
kinit succeeded but ads_sasl_spnego_gensec_bind(KRB5) failed: Strong(er)
authentication required

i have doubts/queries please clarify.

1. If above ldapsearch is returning results. then can i assume the certificate
is fine?
2. Are these issues reproducible at your end ?
3. Should i provide any further log details ?

[Bug 1738693] [NEW] Gnome Terminal 3.18.3 removes lines from terminal when resized

2017-12-17 Thread Pont
Public bug reported:

If you are using a long prompt in ZSH that does not fit on a single line
when resized. When you resize the window from full screen to the
original size, you will loose the previous line of text.

Toggling fullscreen multiple times will remove multiple lines. This does
not appear to happen if the prompt fits with in the resized screen.

This also does not happen while using BASH or while using xterm.

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04

gnome-terminal:
  Installed: 3.18.3-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.18.3-1ubuntu1
  Version table:

## Expected Result:

Expected the window to resize back to original state.

## Result:

Loosing a line of text from the console each time the window is resized.

[Bug 1733136] Re: wayland session in Ubuntu 18.04 chooses LLVMpipe software driver on hybrid graphics system

2017-12-17 Thread Rocko
FWIW, removing libglvnd0 fixed the problem (libegl1 does depend on it,
but it isn't installed in artful either - libegl1-mesa is).

So the bug is actually:

a) the upgrade from artful to bionic installed libglvnd0 and libegl1
when they aren't needed;

b) having libglvnd0/libegl1 installed breaks EGL on Intel-graphics
systems.

** Description changed:

+ This bug is in ubiquity and in libglvnd0/libegl1:
+
+ a) Upgrading from artful to bionic installs libglvnd0 and libegl1 when
+ they aren't needed;
+
+ b) having libglvnd0/libegl1 installed breaks EGL on Intel-graphics
+ systems so you get llvmpipe as the video driver. This means you can't
+ choose Wayland for gnome-shell, but instead are forced into X with
+ software rendering.
+
+
+ Original description:
+
I upgraded to 18.04 and I no longer get an option to run a wayland
session (17.10 offered both the default ubuntu wayland session and xorg
  on this laptop).

gnome-shell runs under the llvmpipe driver. (Unity used to run when I
first upgraded, but now gnome-shell is the only option because the gdm
login screen offers no login options.)

The upgrade did force me to remove bumblebee and nvidia, but afterwards
I manually reinstalled bumblebee and nvidia-387 and reset to using intel
via prime-select (installing nvidia changes some of the symlinks so that
gnome-shell no longer boots, but "sudo prime-select intel" fixes this).

The nvidia-387 modules are blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d, and bumblebee
isn't reporting any errors - bbswitch reports that the nvidia card is
off, so I don't think it's an issue with hybrid graphics. (primusrun
  does work, as well.)

Attached are the mutter logs that I generated via the environment
  variables mentioned in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1724583 comment #20.
I suspect that the culprit is hinted at in this message:

2017-12-17 Thread shubham mishra
Hi Steve,

Thank you for your response, yes you are right that I was not doing a
fresh installation, instead I was overwriting the existing Ubuntu 14.04
installed on my system, keeping apps and documents and settings as it
is, that means, not erasing the previously installed Operating System.

I think part of the problem was my BIOS settings which had boot type set
to UEFI instead of Legacy, I later changed it to Legacy and it
successfully installed xUbuntu 16.04 in the second attempt.

Although I did not lose any documents and settings but because of the
unsuccessful first attempt I lost my apps, which I had to reinstall
after my system got ready :o(

If BIOS settings is the problem then installation should halt at the
very beginning and compel the user to correct it, instead of going ahead
with it and exit with an error leaving an unclean installation and loss
of user apps.

Given the evidence of this to date, I would not suggest that anyone do
further investigation on this problem with their own hardware that would
require expensive professional recovery. A probable fix is in progress for
the kernel package.

[Bug 1738613] Re: Merge plymouth 0.9.3-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2017-12-17 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

Please merge plymouth 0.9.3-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

I cannot work on this merge myself. I am filing this for reference.
-
- Explanation of the Ubuntu delta:
- * Remove dependency on initramfs-tools | dracut. LP: #1716825.
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook: add only a single copy of nss libs in
- initramfs. LP #1714319.
- * Fix hook script to not print warnings about label.so when using the
- ubuntu-text theme. LP: #1578006.
- * No-change rebuild for libpng soname change.
- * debian/plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text.postinst: Make rmdir less noisy.
- * debian/plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text.postinst: Only remove the leftover
- generated files when upgrading, not when triggered.
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - Fix kernel updates on some weird configurations where there is
- a plymouth theme alternative setup pointing to a non existing theme.
- (LP: #1532355, #1548254)
- * debian/local/plymouth.init-premount: Don't start plymouth if "splash" is
- not present on the kernel command line. This makes initrd behaviour
- consistent with what happens at boot (see ubuntu-add-splash-option.patch).
- Fixes password prompts when not booting with "splash". (LP: #1432265)
- * Add missing replaces due to apport hook move (LP: #1531070)
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - handle having the minimum dependency packages installed (no font)
- when setting either no graphical theme or ubuntu-text one as default.
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - protect when there is no alternative configured
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - adapt to handle text flavor plugin, copying the ubuntu-text module
- (LP: #1525841)
- - be more resilient if there is only one plymouth theme configured
- (default or text) or none.
- * Declare a Conflicts: with broken (and not-deconfigureable) versions of
- plymouth-theme-lubuntu-text, to work around LP: #1524480.
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - disable harmless (in the ubuntu case, where we control supported
official
- and flavors themes) warning which confuses users for flavors not using
- a compiled text theme (LP: #1524937)
- * debian/plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text.postinst: don't fail if the directory
- /lib/plymouth doesn't exist when we try to remove it, such as when a new
- install is being bootstrapped.
- * debian/local/plymouth.hook:
- - ensure that whenever configuration order is, we only build the
- initramfs if we have a default and text themes.
- * themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo.script:
- update to support fsckd systemd service protocol.
- * Add libply-splash-core-also-monitor-for-file-removal-in-.patch:
- libply-splash-core: also monitor for file removal in udev
- directory. Ensures that plymouth detects coldplug completion with recent
-  udev (>= 213). Patch cherry-picked from upstream git.
- * d/p/ubuntu-fix-split-writes.patch -- avoid the client seeing
- the beginning of our replies before the whole reply is ready for
- consumption. This avoids us aborting password lookups even though
- they were correctly entered. (LP: #1362333)
- * d/p/ubuntu-seat-terminal-may-be-null.patch -- check that the
- seat->terminal/keyboard is valid before instantiating a text terminal
- on it. (LP: #1371651)
- * Adjust grub snippet that sets purple background color - set alpha to
- zero. This corrects early boot theming. Thanks to Yu Ning. (LP:
- #1308723).
- * Move the dependency on ttf-ubuntu-font-family from
- plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo to plymouth-label, replacing the dependency
- on fonts-dejavu-core instead of causing us to depend on two different
- fonts
- * Readd the plymouth hook, but in the plymouth package instead of the
- library package to avoid uninstallibility problems during library
- transitions. In practice, this hook is only interesting to have if
- plymouth itself is installed.
- * Convert versioned upstart dependency into a versioned Breaks. We ship
- systemd units too now, and this avoids a hard upstart dependency even
- in minimal debootstraps/chroots. (LP: #1351306)
- * Build without apport hook, and without breaks/replaces libplymouth2,
- such that rebuilds in the archive can happen with both libplymouths
- co-installed.
- * Import debian patches, sans default theme. This also brings in systemd
- units fixes.
- * Enable systemd units & parallel build.
- * Synchronise postinst/postrm with debian.
- * Fold ubuntu-logo patches into one.
- * Drop autoreconf patch, as we use dh-autoreconf now.
- * Suppress job-name update notifications to plymouthd from
- plymouth-upstart-bridge. (LP: #1303815)
- [ Steve Langasek ]
- * Fix debian/patches/tty1-after-boot.patch: when we have multiple
- non-default console options on the kernel commandline,
- local_console_terminal will

[Bug 1738677] [NEW] Runtime Error: Server Error in '/' Application

2017-12-17 Thread tobias john knight
Public bug reported:

I have not got a clue how to use computers apart from using websites, so
all I know is that on 'autism.org.uk' I went back to the Online
Community forum page after cancelling a reply, three error panels came
up, so I decided, not knowing why, to sign out, and a Runtime Error page
remains the case and I can no longer get access to the Online Community
forum, whilst all the other options are available.

I went on the internet to find out what a runtime error involved, saw
some advice about un-installing and re-installing firefox, which I
followed via the Ubuntu Software icon, but it made no difference.

Hence I reported the problem as is here the case.

The system I have is Ubuntu 16.10, with Firefox 54.0 ~ and I cannot for
the life of me work out how to install Firefox Quantum as it does not
automatically do so. I got the download for FQ, clicked on the box,
archive manager comes up ~ and I know not what that involves or how to
make use of it.

[Bug 1738676] [NEW] With natural scrolling, horizontal sliders behave backwards

2017-12-17 Thread Cubic PPA
Public bug reported:

When natural-scrolling is enabled, controlling horizontal sliders is
backwards and counter intuitive.

The volume control in the top-bar "speaker" icon is backwards.

You have to...
- scroll DOWN, to INCREASE the volume
- scroll UP, to DECREASE the volume

Expected behavior:

Enable natural-scrolling and
- scroll UP, to INCREASE the volume
- scroll DOWN, to DECREASE the volume
- scroll UP, to INCREASE the screen brightness
- scroll DOWN, to DECREASE the screen brightness

Enable natural-scrolling, hover over a horizontal slider, and...
- scroll UP, to move the slider to the RIGHT
- scroll DOWN, to move the slider to the LEFT

This happens for the OSD volume icon, and for the volume slider in the
topbar menu.

This also happens for screen brightness controls.

This problem occurs for both mouse natural-scrolling and touchpad
natural scrolling.

Expected fix:

When the pointer hovers over the speaker icon in the scroll actions on the
speaker icon in the top bar should be reversed.
When the user interacts with a horizontal slider, scrolling to the top should
always move the slider to the right, and scrolling down should always move the
slider to the left, even if natural-scrolling is enabled.

[Bug 1733068] Re: Unmounted USB drives wake up on 16.04

2017-12-17 Thread Alan Stern
If you want to get more information about what's happening at the USB
level, you should use usbmon (see Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt in the
kernel source for instructions). It will tell you what commands are
being sent to the drive, but not which program is responsible for
sending them. Still, you can use it to compare the different Ubuntu
releases.

(Hint: If you do collect a usbmon trace, it helps to unplug beforehand
as many of the other USB devices as you can, to prevent the data streams
from getting all mixed together.)

[Bug 1731870] Re: Failed to start Cryptography Setup for cryptswap1

2017-12-17 Thread Antti K
Me too having this issue; on MSI GV62 7RE with i7-7700HQ, 8GB RAM, GTX
1050 ti, Crucial SSD (275GB M.2 SATA) + 1 TB rotating HD.

Problem occurred after installation of Nvidia drivers (propably 384),
after that the boot stuck in a loop, alternating black and the boot log
shown in attachment.

Previously booted to Ubuntu 17.10, but 3D graphics seemed to be out on
vanilla Nouveau (e.g. OpenArena crashed upon game start)

[Bug 1738675] [NEW] Deleting every search action in the whisker menu preferences crashes the prefereces

2017-12-17 Thread Scott Cohen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the Whisker Menu preferences.
2. Go to the Search Actions tab.
3. Delete all the existing entries (I did this in descending order).
4. After deleting the last one, the preference window closes.

The expected behavior is that the preference window does not close when
deleting the last search action entry.

When the window closed, I also lost all changes recently made in the
time the window was open. I'm just stating this here just in case the
program saves periodically instead after each action.

[Bug 1738673] [NEW] deluser --backup fails because tar --no-unquote option should be used

2017-12-17 Thread jimav
Public bug reported:

deluser --backup --remove-home (or --remove-all-files) USER
aborts if it encounters certain file names, for example the ubiquitous
'C:\nppdf32Log\debuglog.txt' left in Linux home directories by Firefox.

The root cause is that 'tar' helpfully "interprets escape sequences" in
its filename arguments, so file names containing a backslash followed by
'n' are changed to contain a newline character, and other similar cases.

The tar --no-unquote option prevents this. So 'deluser' should pass
--no-unquote to 'tar' when creating the backup archive.

I'll attach a demo/regression-test script, but in brief:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. touch '/home/testuser/C:\nppdf32Log\debuglog.txt'
2. deluser --backup --remove-home testuser

RESULTS:

/bin/tar: /home/.../C\:\nppdf32Log\\debuglog.txt: Cannot stat: No such file or
directory
(deluser aborts without doing anything except creating an empty archive file)

2017-12-17 Thread Ken Sharp
Aaaand... installing the hwe-edge packages on Xenial causes LVM EXT4
partitions to fail entirely because e2fsck cannot handle it.

A bit more of an issue than "wishlist".

Workaround: install Zesty e2fsck and e2libs and pray that they work.
