[Bug 1741390] Re: Please backport open-vm-tools 2:10.2.0-3 (main) from bionic
I now have several leads which raise my mood on this. I already had one party testing the locally which made us spot an issue with the latest version in regard to xenials systemd (bug 1750780). But that is fixed already in the proposed ppa. We now also got vmware itself taking a look at the proposed changes in the ppa which should update here in a bit. Since this is the first time this is formally introduced it might take a while, but I think if all that works together we can work out a formal SRU exception that will allow to do that regularly. Next Steps: 1. smoke test ack on the ppa 3152 by VMware (result: comment on this bug) --- the following are follow on actions in my mind, not yet discussed/agreed with the others --- 2. create SRU exception (I'll do that) agreed by VMware on how/who verifies them (result: SRU exception wiki page) 3. ack by the SRU Team on the exception (result: ack by SRU team) 4. upload verified open-vm-tools versions under above SRU exception regularly (result: up to date open-vm-tools in Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1741390 Title: Please backport open-vm-tools 2:10.2.0-3 (main) from bionic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xenial-backports/+bug/1741390/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1750780] Re: Race with local file systems can make open-vm-tools fail to start
With the former update in mind I retried Xenial/Bionic again. All of it is racy (as we knew), but it never triggered for Bionic. Xenial (19/33 fails) Bionic (0/37 fails) So for now we continue to assume that it is fixed there (by systemd) and revert our added dependency. Note: as with the simple job in comment #12 and comment #14 this is Hipervisor agnostic. You can even test the open-vm-tools service in KVM by removing the condition on vmware. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1750780 Title: Race with local file systems can make open-vm-tools fail to start To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-init/+bug/1750780/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1750780] Re: Race with local file systems can make open-vm-tools fail to start
Thanks Scott for your cross check. I wonder why my former test failed on each of my tests without writing, but never the less your extended example is great for the systemd issue that remains. Although all of this is still a race, for example with the job above on a Xenial container I could not trigger it in several retries (5/5 worked). Doing the same in a Xenial KVM guest instead triggered it right away, but still not on every reboot (3/5 failed). [Bug 1751994] [NEW] ppc64el: Support firmware disable of RFI flush
Public bug reported: == Comment: #0 - Breno Leitao - 2018-02-26 13:59:55 == Hi Canonical, We still need some changes regarding spectre and meltdown. [Bug 1751834] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla
--- Comment From bssrika...@in.ibm.com 2018-02-27 00:21 EDT--- (In reply to comment #5) > When you say "Power9 DD 2.2 needs HMI fixup backport of..." in the original > bug description. Is this patchset required to boot P9 DD2.2? We need this patch for KVM guest testing on DD 2.2 revision. Good explanation on why this is required is in commit pointed. ==_ Hypervisor maintenance interrupts (HMIs) are generated by various causes, signalled by bits in the hypervisor maintenance exception register (HMER). In most cases calling OPAL to handle the interrupt is the correct thing to do, but the "debug trigger" HMIs signalled by PPC bit 17 (bit 46) of HMER are used to invoke software workarounds for hardware bugs, and OPAL does not have any code to handle this cause. The debug trigger HMI is used in POWER9 DD2.0 and DD2.1 chips to work around a hardware bug in executing vector load instructions to cache inhibited memory. In POWER9 DD2.2 chips, it is generated when conditions are detected relating to threads being in TM (transactional memory) suspended mode when the core SMT configuration needs to be reconfigured. The kernel currently has code to detect the vector CI load condition, but only when the HMI occurs in the host, not when it occurs in a guest. If a HMI occurs in the guest, it is always passed to OPAL, and then we always re-sync the timebase, because the HMI cause might have been a timebase error, for which OPAL would re-sync the timebase, thus removing the timebase offset which KVM applied for the guest. Since we don't know what OPAL did, we don't know whether to subtract the timebase offset from the timebase, so instead we re-sync the timebase. This adds code to determine explicitly what the cause of a debug trigger HMI will be. This is based on a new device-tree property under the CPU nodes called ibm,hmi-special-triggers, if it is present, or otherwise based on the PVR (processor version register). The handling of debug trigger HMIs is pulled out into a separate function which can be called from the KVM guest exit code. If this function handles and clears the HMI, and no other HMI causes remain, then we skip calling OPAL and we proceed to subtract the guest timebase offset from the timebase. The overall handling for HMIs that occur in the host (i.e. not in a KVM guest) is largely unchanged, except that we now don't set the flag for the vector CI load workaround on DD2.2 processors. This also removes a BUG_ON in the KVM code. BUG_ON is generally not useful in KVM guest entry/exit code since it is difficult to handle the resulting trap gracefully. ==_ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751834 Title: Power9 DD 2.2 needs HMI fixup backport of upstream patch(d075745d893c78730e4a3b7a60fca23c2f764081) into kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-systems/+bug/1751834/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It seems you can login with empty password in the login screen. Not sure why this didn't work for me when I was testing it last time. But the rest of the issue still stands. It is confusing that you have to type a password if the account should not have a password. Ideally, user should just be able to click on their username in the list of usernames on the login screen. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751545 Title: In Ubuntu artful, ther is no nopasswdlogin group anymore To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1751545/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1737053] Re: [MIR] brotli
I reviewed brotli version 1.0.2-3 as checked into bionic. This should not be considered a full security audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability. - brotli is a compression tool, both a library and command line application - There's two CVEs, perhaps only one fault, for use in Chrome and Firefox. This is both a benefit (loads of people hammer these two projects endlessly) and a risk (getting fixes for CVEs out of these projects is extremely difficult.) - Build-Depends: cmake, debhelper, dh-python, python, python-dev, python-setuptools, python3, python3-dev, python3-setuptools - Does not daemonize - Does not itself do networking - Automatically generated pre/post rm/inst scripts - No init scripts - No systemd files - No DBus services - No setuid files - 'brotli' executable in PATH - No sudo fragments - No udev rules - A large-feeling test suite is run during the build - No cron jobs - Clean build logs - No subprocesses spawned - Careful memory management - Most file IO under control of callers; .bro file extension code looked careful - Clean logging - No environment variable use - Very limited privileged operations use; chmod() followed by two chown() calls. Perhaps there's a weakness here as these repeatedly operate on filenames rather than using fchmod(), fchown() on a single file descriptor. - No cryptography - No networking - No privileged portions of code - No temporary files - No webkit - No policykit - No javascript - cppcheck is not as clean as it could be, but reflects common C idiom. Brotli is very dense, highly domain-specific code. It may have algorithmic flaws that are very difficult to spot on a cursory read; that said, calls almost universally have error checking, and the comments are tasteful. We will need to rely upon upstream for maintenance help but the software itself looks professionally programmed. Security team ACK for promoting brotli to main. [Bug 1751512] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors
There were some other problems with the install. Gvim would not work. It turned into a terminal rather than an editor. I decided to do a clean install. The third time. The first time it installed with two montors attached and the network was connected. That is when I first saw the video go blank at startup. The second time it installed with a single monitor and without the network and no third party software. It booted and ran with two monitors. Then I updated the level 1, 2 and 3 updates. Then the level 4 updates saving the kernel for last. After that the video would blank with two monitors until I switched back to the 4.10 kernel. After a third clean install the 4.13.0-36 kernel is booting up with two monitors and they are staying lit. Gvim is working like is should. Something in the install went wrong or when I installed the updates one at a time i did so in the wrong order. It is up a running I will continue configuring it. Please close this bug report. FM. Thanks for the bug report. Although given this started with you removing packages, this might not be a bug. It depends on whether your system thinks its packages are fully installed and clean still. [Bug 1750379] Re: Distortion Realtek ALC887
If you experience the same sounding glitching in Win 10 then yes this sounds like a hardware problem. But you also said that "Amplification worked well for years before recent PulseAudio update", so I wonder if you can find any older Ubuntu release where it works still? Try live booting some of these: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/ Otherwise, try replacing your 3.5mm audio splitter and related cables.
