[Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-06-14 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+ A regression in initramfs-tools causes it to autogenerate config in the
initramfs saying to resume from any available swap devices, but references the
swap device by UUID, which is not a canonical form for referring to LVM volumes
(because of snapshotting, they are not unique). Ubiquity also generates a file
in /etc at install time which references the swap partition in the same way.
Since the lvm2 initramfs hooks also only activate precisely those LVs that are
detected as needed at boot, this adds an inappropriate 30-second boot delay to
any system with swap on LVM, which includes any desktop system that was
configured with LVM (but not full-disk encryption) at install time.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1. Install using the "Use LVM" option in the desktop installer.
+ 4. Reboot.
+ 5. Verify that dmesg shows a 30-second delay before mounting the root
filesystem.
+ 6. Install initramfs-tools from bionic-proposed.
+ 7. Reboot.
+ 8. Verify that dmesg no longer shows a 30-second delay before mounting the
root filesystem.
+ 9. Install using the bionic daily image that contains the ubiquity from
bionic-proposed.
+ 10. Reboot.
+ 11. Verify that /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is not present and that
there is no delay before mounting the root filesystem.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ This makes changes to shell scripts, and shell is a perilous language. An
unnoticed bug could cause all initramfs generation, and thus all kernel
installation, to fail for some users. A regression could also cause a user to
lose hiberation support that they currently have.
+
+ [Original description]
After choosing "Erase disk and install ubuntu" + "Use LVM with the new Ubuntu
installation", the
system is very slow to reboot.

It shows the message : "WARNING:Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to
device scanning.",
then waits 32 seconds, then continues as it should.

I think this is a ubiquity bug, since the d-i based installer is not affected.

Maybe there's something in PulseAudio that could be improved regarding
the default behaviour. Can you attach the output of "pactl list" after
boot, when you have no audio? Please use the "Add an attachment" link
(sometimes people paste long texts to the comment box, which makes
following the discussion difficult).

[Bug 1773763] Re: skytools3 autopkgtest broken in xenial and artful

2018-06-14 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Found no issue in a few manual tries with the package.
But since our change modified only the autopkgtest that was to be expected.
Here the change made it working in proposed migration again
passing fine, so the change is working as expected.

Example:
https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest-artful/artful/amd64/s/skytools3/20180615_010352_774bb@/log.gz

So verification of the change is ok.

[Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-06-14 Thread Steve Langasek
Two bugs:
- ubiquity creates an /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume which lists the swap
device by UUID; this is not the correct way to reference a device that's on
LVM, and with the current lvm initramfs hooks it fails because it won't be
found to be activated.
- if /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is absent, initramfs-tools itself
auto-creates a file on update-initramfs -u that references the uuid.

We need to fix both.

I'm not sure if we should add some upgrade handling to detect broken
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume for this case and remove it on
upgrade.

[Bug 1777017] Re: snap install lxd doesn't work within a container

2018-06-14 Thread John Johansen
An explanation for Seth's change:

AppArmor will nest and stack within a container environment, but it
relies on the container environment to setup the correct namespacing.

>From the look of this, this is a policy issue where the apparmor policy
is not being setup correctly. In this case the policy reporting denials
is owned by snapd.

[Bug 1586835] Re: ssh-agent fighting gnome-keyring on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04

2018-06-14 Thread Bruce Smith
I have a very similar experience on Ubuntu MATE 18.04.

/run/user/1000/keyring/ssh is opened by gnome-keyring-daemon
/run/user/1000/keyring/.ssh is opened by /usr/bin/ssh-agent
$SSH_AUTH_SOCK points to /run/user/1000/keyring/ssh

When I try to open an SSH session to another machine it hangs just after
"SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received"

Changing $SSH_AUTH_SOCK to point to /run/user/1000/keyring/.ssh allows
the SSH to complete

[Bug 1777045] [NEW] Initrd doesn't have proper compress format

2018-06-14 Thread Jerry Huang
Public bug reported:

It is very similar to the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/initramfs-tools/+bug/1462788 reported about 3 years ago.

I'm using an up-to-date Xubuntu 18. The system is still bootable. But I
couldn't extract initramfs:

root@Chrom-agent:/tmp# file /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-22-generic
/boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-22-generic: ASCII cpio archive (SVR4 with no CRC)

After removed /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/intel_microcode and
regenerated initramfs, the initrd could be recognized by compress
utility.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
initramfs-tools 0.130ubuntu3

[Bug 1776887] Re: Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend

2018-06-14 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Tags added: cherry-pick kernel-fixed-upstream regression-release

** Description changed:

This upstream bug has been confirmed to affect Ubuntu users[1]. As per
the fix commit (below), the most frequent symptom is a crash of
Xorg/Xwayland, i.e. killing the entire GUI, when a laptop is woken from
system sleep. Frequency of the bug is described as once every few
  days[2].

[1] E.g. this user confirms the bug & very specific workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/comments/11
[2] E.g. this log of crashes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979#c23

This is a bug in blk-core.c. It is not specific to any one hardware
driver. Technically the suspend bug is triggered by the SCSI core -
which is used by *all SATA devices*.

The commit also includes a test which quickly and reliably proves the
  existence of a horrifying bug.

I guess you might avoid this bug only if you have root on NVMe. The
other way to not hit the Xorg crash is if you don't use all your RAM, so
there's no pressure that leads to cold pages of Xorg being swapped.
Also, you won't reproduce the Xorg crash if you suspend+resume
immediately. (This frustrated my tests at one point, it only triggered
after left the system suspended over lunch :).

  /~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/bionic/tree/block/blk-

I.e., this bug is still present in Ubuntu source package
  linux-4.15.0-24.26 (and 4.15.0-23.25). I attach hardware details
(lspci-vnvn.log) of a system where this bug is known to happen.

The bad-distribution line may be a result of this being an 'unstable' package,
rather than an ubuntu package; anonscm lines may be Someone Else's Problem for
a similar reason.

Is the dbus-policy-without-send-destination warning a real issue?

Thanks

How about this theory: With Eco mode on, the power supply prevents the
current from increasing until the fan speeds up, causing the voltage to
drop ever so slightly, and pademonium ensues. Note that EVGA's site does
not explicitly say that that Eco mode only controls the fan. I am not
pointing the finger at EVGA, I am just exploring a theory, please refute
if possible.

I am willing to believe that this system is stable now that I am at 51
days uptime,  so I will try some experiments. The first one will be, run
with both Typical Power and Eco Mode off, and all stock bios and kernel
settings.

EPU Power Saving Mode
The ASUS EPU (Energy Processing Unit) sets the CPU in its minimum power
consumption
settings. Enabling this item will apply lower CPU Core/Cache Voltage and help
save energy
consumption. Set this item to disabled if you are over clocking the system.

@Ryan, yes. Acoording to dmidecode I am using 0601 BIOS that is the last
one available in Asus website.

Interesting that you are having soft lockups even with Typical Current.
It completely solved the problems in my old 1700X system and it seems to
have worked well for others. Are you overclocking? If yes, try first
with default settings. Good luck!

[Bug 1690085]

2018-06-14 Thread pjssilva
I would like just to pass some evidence that this affects Threadrippers.
I have two identical system with the 1950X on a Asus X399-A Prime
motherboard. This motherboard does not have the Power Supply option in
the BIOS. Both freeze from time to time.

But more interesting, both systems freeze when running a code developed
by one of our students that uses Matlab and computes the SVD of a large
matrix followed by some time almost idle writing to a NFS mount many
times in a loop. The code takes around an hour to run. I made a small
script loops between running the code followed by calling sleep for one
extra hour to put the machine in a idle state. It always make the
machines freeze in less than one day. In some cases the freeze happens
even while the code is running, not only when idle. This seems odd. It
is very reproducible.

The solution is to disable C6 fully using zenstates.py. Only disabling
c6-packaging is not enough. Another possibility, that I am inclined is
to recover some of the performance I lost by loosing turbo boost and
XFR, is a light overclock. I am testing one of the machines now
@3.75GHz.

Have anyone seen the "power supply" option in a X399 motherboard?

[Bug 1690085]

2018-06-14 Thread ryan
@Paulo: Are you running the latest bios? There is a newer bios from
~April or so, but I do not have the motherboard to try it out.

To add some more information to this thread, I have the following
machine:

 * AMD Ryzen 2700X
 * SuperNOVA 650 G3 650W (Eco switch set to On)
 * Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero Wifi (BIOS 0601 04/19/2018, Typical Current set
in the BIOS)

This setup is currently working better with the Typical Current setting,
though I have experienced a soft lockup with these settings after about
~6 hours of uptime. I am going to run the same setup with the eco switch
to off on the PSU to see if anything changes.

2018-06-14 Thread ryan
Eco mode supposedly only controls the PSU fan. I'm guessing that will
not change anything on the CPU soft lock side.

2018-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
jibel, it sounds like you might have a file descriptor leak, which is
something I don't ever recall seeing in gnome-shell before.

If you can reproduce the issue in future then please try eliminating
extensions:

b'org.gnome.shell' b'enabled-extensions' b"['alternate-tab@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com', 'bettervol...@tudmotu.com', 'dash-to-

[Bug 1777029] [NEW] fscache: Fix hanging wait on page discarded by writeback

2018-06-14 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

== SRU Justification ==

[Impact]
Under heavy NFS + FSCache load, a user sometimes observes a hang in
__fscache_wait_on_page_write+0x5f/0xa0.

Example traces:
[] __fscache_wait_on_page_write+0x5f/0xa0 [fscache]
[] __fscache_uncache_all_inode_pages+0xba/0x120 [fscache]
[] nfs_fscache_open_file+0x4e/0xc0 [nfs]

[] __fscache_wait_on_page_write+0x5f/0xa0 [fscache]
[] __nfs_fscache_invalidate_page+0x2c/0x80 [nfs]
[] nfs_invalidate_page+0x63/0x90 [nfs]
[] truncate_inode_page+0x80/0x90

[Fix]
Cherry-pick 2c98425720233ae3e135add0c7e869b32913502f from upstream, which is a
patch from the FSCache maintainer.

[Testcase]
The user has run a NFS stress-test with a similar home-grown patch, and will
run a stress test on the proposed kernel.

[Regression Potential]
Patch is limited to FSCache, so regression potential is limited.

[Bug 1777021] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Such freezes are more likely a kernel issue. Do you have any sign of
life from the machine when frozen, like being able to login remotely?

The dpkg.txt file is still missing, but that probably doesn't matter.

I don't think this is a valid bug. It appears you don't have any
bluetooth hardware, so that's why you couldn't get any of the software
to work.

You can't set focus without using a keyboard or mouse. So can you

The errors are all about "usb3" and the bug was logged from a live

Most likely there is a connection/reconnection problem with booting this
particular USB drive or the USB port. Please try a different USB stick

[Bug 1773276] Re: Cursor jumps at the end of trackpoint movement with libinput 1.9+ on thinkpads on Bionic

2018-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+ https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/issues/34

  ---

After installing bionic on two thinkpads (x131e, x230), I've noticed
that once you stop motion on the trackpoint (and possibly apply a
miniscule amount of pressure on it after stopping), the cursor will jump
in the direction of the previous motion by a small amount. This makes
the computer incredibly difficult to use as you can't accurately target
things. Furthermore, the speed of the cursor has increased
  substantially.

I have a slow motion video captured on an iPhone that demonstrates this
behaviour but I can't upload it at this moment. If someone wants to see
it, I might be able to post it later.

I've also narrowed down the problem to libinput. I bisected the
different releases via the debian sources (with the packages built from
them) and narrowed it to some changes between 1.8 and 1.9. This makes
sense as I previously didn't notice this behaviour on Artful, which is
on libinput 1.8. This issue affects all distros as well, given that it's
  a libinput issue.

I also tested the latest libinput, 1.10.7, and it does NOT resolve this
  issue.

[Bug 1777016] [NEW] Clementine does not properly respect default sound output

2018-06-14 Thread David Kowis
Public bug reported:

https://github.com/clementine-player/Clementine/pull/6087

Clementine, when interacting with it, not during automatic song
transition, will always reset the default device, switching away from my
bluetooth headset, and back to the non-default Speaker. This is super
annoying. Fortunately upstream has found, and fixed the problem. I would
like to set it get into ubuntu 18.04. (Specifically Kubuntu 18.04)
