[Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
** Description changed: + [SRU Justification] + A regression in initramfs-tools causes it to autogenerate config in the initramfs saying to resume from any available swap devices, but references the swap device by UUID, which is not a canonical form for referring to LVM volumes (because of snapshotting, they are not unique). Ubiquity also generates a file in /etc at install time which references the swap partition in the same way. Since the lvm2 initramfs hooks also only activate precisely those LVs that are detected as needed at boot, this adds an inappropriate 30-second boot delay to any system with swap on LVM, which includes any desktop system that was configured with LVM (but not full-disk encryption) at install time. + + [Test case] + 1. Install using the "Use LVM" option in the desktop installer. + 4. Reboot. + 5. Verify that dmesg shows a 30-second delay before mounting the root filesystem. + 6. Install initramfs-tools from bionic-proposed. + 7. Reboot. + 8. Verify that dmesg no longer shows a 30-second delay before mounting the root filesystem. + 9. Install using the bionic daily image that contains the ubiquity from bionic-proposed. + 10. Reboot. + 11. Verify that /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is not present and that there is no delay before mounting the root filesystem. + + [Regression potential] + This makes changes to shell scripts, and shell is a perilous language. An unnoticed bug could cause all initramfs generation, and thus all kernel installation, to fail for some users. A regression could also cause a user to lose hiberation support that they currently have. + + [Original description] After choosing "Erase disk and install ubuntu" + "Use LVM with the new Ubuntu installation", the system is very slow to reboot. It shows the message : "WARNING:Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.", then waits 32 seconds, then continues as it should. I think this is a ubiquity bug, since the d-i based installer is not affected. - - ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso (a55353d837cbf7bc006cf49eeff05ae5044e757498e30643a9199b9a25bc9a34) : affected - - xubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso (7c24318d3b1de1efd584b5aea034ce1aafd2d0f06c59812d989a5fc95bf947e3) : affected - - ubuntu-18.04-server-amd64.iso (a7f5c7b0cdd0e9560d78f1e47660e066353bb8a79eb78d1fc3f4ea62a07e6cbc) : not affected + - ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso (a55353d837cbf7bc006cf49eeff05ae5044e757498e30643a9199b9a25bc9a34) : affected + - xubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso (7c24318d3b1de1efd584b5aea034ce1aafd2d0f06c59812d989a5fc95bf947e3) : affected + - ubuntu-18.04-server-amd64.iso (a7f5c7b0cdd0e9560d78f1e47660e066353bb8a79eb78d1fc3f4ea62a07e6cbc) : not affected -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768230 Title: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. [Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.
Two bugs: - ubiquity creates an /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume which lists the swap device by UUID; this is not the correct way to reference a device that's on LVM, and with the current lvm initramfs hooks it fails because it won't be found to be activated. - if /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is absent, initramfs-tools itself auto-creates a file on update-initramfs -u that references the uuid. We need to fix both. I'm not sure if we should add some upgrade handling to detect broken /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume for this case and remove it on upgrade. ** Also affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768230 Title: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. But I couldn't extract initramfs: root@Chrom-agent:/tmp# file /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-22-generic /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-22-generic: ASCII cpio archive (SVR4 with no CRC) After removed /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/intel_microcode and regenerated initramfs, the initrd could be recognized by compress utility. [Bug 1776887] Re: Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend
** Tags added: cherry-pick kernel-fixed-upstream regression-release reverse-bisect-done ** Description changed: This upstream bug has been confirmed to affect Ubuntu users[1]. As per the fix commit (below), the most frequent symptom is a crash of Xorg/Xwayland, i.e. killing the entire GUI, when a laptop is woken from system sleep. Frequency of the bug is described as once every few days[2]. [1] E.g. this user confirms the bug & very specific workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/comments/11 [2] E.g. this log of crashes: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979#c23 This is a bug in blk-core.c. It is not specific to any one hardware driver. Technically the suspend bug is triggered by the SCSI core - which is used by *all SATA devices*. The commit also includes a test which quickly and reliably proves the existence of a horrifying bug. I guess you might avoid this bug only if you have root on NVMe. The other way to not hit the Xorg crash is if you don't use all your RAM, so there's no pressure that leads to cold pages of Xorg being swapped. Also, you won't reproduce the Xorg crash if you suspend+resume immediately. (This frustrated my tests at one point, it only triggered after left the system suspended over lunch :). - Fix: "block: do not use interruptible wait anywhere" in kernel 4.17: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/1dc3039bc87ae7d19a990c3ee71cfd8a9068f428 in kernel 4.16.8: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable /linux- stable.git/commit/?h=linux-4.16.y=7859056bc73dea2c3714b00c83b253d4c22bf7b6 lack of fix in 4.15.0-24.26 (ubuntu 18.04): https://git.launchpad.net /~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/bionic/tree/block/blk- core.c?id=Ubuntu-4.15.0-24.26#n856 I.e., this bug is still present in Ubuntu source package linux-4.15.0-24.26 (and 4.15.0-23.25). Note that EVGA's site does not explicitly say that that Eco mode only controls the fan. I am not pointing the finger at EVGA, I am just exploring a theory, please refute if possible. I am willing to believe that this system is stable now that I am at 51 days uptime, so I will try some experiments. @Ryan, yes. Acoording to dmidecode I am using 0601 BIOS that is the last one available in Asus website. Interesting that you are having soft lockups even with Typical Current. It completely solved the problems in my old 1700X system and it seems to have worked well for others. Are you overclocking? If yes, try first with default settings. [Bug 1690085]
I would like just to pass some evidence that this affects Threadrippers. I have two identical system with the 1950X on a Asus X399-A Prime motherboard. This motherboard does not have the Power Supply option in the BIOS. Both freeze from time to time. But more interesting, both systems freeze when running a code developed by one of our students that uses Matlab and computes the SVD of a large matrix followed by some time almost idle writing to a NFS mount many times in a loop. The code takes around an hour to run. I made a small script loops between running the code followed by calling sleep for one extra hour to put the machine in a idle state. It always make the machines freeze in less than one day. In some cases the freeze happens even while the code is running, not only when idle. This seems odd. It is very reproducible. The solution is to disable C6 fully using zenstates.py. Only disabling c6-packaging is not enough. Another possibility, that I am inclined is to recover some of the performance I lost by loosing turbo boost and XFR, is a light overclock. I am testing one of the machines now @3.75GHz. [Bug 1773276] Re: Cursor jumps at the end of trackpoint movement with libinput 1.9+ on thinkpads on Bionic
** Description changed: - https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/issues/22 + https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/issues/34 --- After installing bionic on two thinkpads (x131e, x230), I've noticed that once you stop motion on the trackpoint (and possibly apply a miniscule amount of pressure on it after stopping), the cursor will jump in the direction of the previous motion by a small amount. This makes the computer incredibly difficult to use as you can't accurately target things. Furthermore, the speed of the cursor has increased substantially. I have a slow motion video captured on an iPhone that demonstrates this behaviour but I can't upload it at this moment. If someone wants to see it, I might be able to post it later. I've also narrowed down the problem to libinput. I bisected the different releases via the debian sources (with the packages built from them) and narrowed it to some changes between 1.8 and 1.9. This makes sense as I previously didn't notice this behaviour on Artful, which is on libinput 1.8. This issue affects all distros as well, given that it's a libinput issue. I also tested the latest libinput, 1.10.7, and it does NOT resolve this issue. Previously this driver supported one PCI ID (19e5:1822), and this added a couple more. I don't have one of the *new* devices, but I do have system with the 19e5:1822, and I can confirm I observe no regressions. ** Tags removed: verification-needed-bionic ** Tags added: verification-done-bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1770970 Title: Huawei 25G/100G Network Adapters Unsupported To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1770970/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
