Turns out lightdm is working after all, almost. If you wait patiently
when the black screen appears after the Ubuntu 5 dots boot screen,
possibly as much as 4 minutes, then the desktop eventually appears,
albeit somewhat messed up, with a message box asking you to "unlock the
login keychain"
In the latest update that I just installed before I revert back, which
is 4.15.20.24 (if I'm not mistaken), there was a point that even a
corded USB mouse refuses to even click (or rather select any item in the
desktop).

@Sami: the compilation is done automatically by the installer. You can
either plug in Ethernet or reboot and chose Advanced Ubuntu boot option,
scroll down to the previous ver. of the Kernel (4.13) and boot with it
normally to get the WiFi connection back. Then "See

I don't consider switching to lightdm to be a solution the problem. It's a
workaround.

Trent Lloyd, did you manage to work around the problem with broken
snaps? Asking because it looks like there's an update for the gnome-
calculator snap that has broken the calculator on my system. Nothing
happens when I run it, and if I run "snap refresh" from the command
line, I get the following
