[Bug 1783455] Re: tlp shouldn't recommend linux-tools
There is no "proper way" for a package to depend on linux-tools in Ubuntu, currently. A bug on linux-tools wouldn't have solved that problem retroactively. And no, we're not going to ask our upstreams every time we make a change to a package. If we did, there would be no Ubuntu, no Debian, no Fedora, arguably no meaningfully usable Free Software distributions at all. And, it turns out, sometimes people who understand the inner workings (and failings, in this case) of a specific distribution know what's better for it than the people demanding we ask their permission before we exercise the rights given to us by the software's license. I don't dispute that my initial analysis was incorrect and tlp can indeed make use of linux-tools, but that doesn't change my conclusion. It's not a hard dependency, the functionality is not required for the package to work, and pulling in several megabyte of a potentially useless perf (because it's for the wrong kernel ABI) just to get at one small utility is not reasonable with the state of the Ubuntu archive. If we split out linux-cpupower into a binary that it's tied to kernel ABI, as Ben has done in Debian, then this dep would make more sense for us, but for now it does not. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1783455 Title: tlp shouldn't recommend linux-tools To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tlp/+bug/1783455/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1734817] Re: keyboard: alt-F doesn't open File menu
Updating this report for Ubuntu 18.04. I made a new install of Ubuntu 18.04 and switched to the Unity shell. LibreOffice: can't use ALT+F to access the File menu. ALT+E (etc) work fine; just not ALT+F. Terminal: nothing seems to allow me to enable the ALT+F etc mnemonics in Gnome Terminal. Seems to be a separate bug. Synaptic: works perfectly; it is not integrated with the Unity menu. Thunderbird: works perfectly; it is integrated with the Unity menu correctly. Firefox: also works perfectly. Rhythmbox: as with LibreOffice, all the shortcuts work except for ALT+F (the first menu is not responsive, even though the 'F' in 'File' is underlined, just as for LibreOffice. Gedit: as for Rhythmbox, LibreOffice: ALT+F doesn't work. Pluma: works fine, except that ALT+F menu appears in the wrong place!! Appears in the top-left corner of the window instead of near the menubar. @kurshid-alam: note, all of these apps *DO HAVE* menubars, all of which *DO APPEAR* when I type ALT. The only issue here is whether the displayed mnemonics are actually enacted or not. @kurshid-alam: This issue was not present in Ubuntu 16.04, so I don't think it can relate to the 5-year old patch that you mentioned. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1734817 Title: keyboard: alt-F doesn't open File menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1734817/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: On a clean Ubuntu 18.04, the Gnome Terminal menubar mnemonics are disabled, which makes quick launching of terminals with different profiles difficult. There is still a setting for turning on/off mnemonics in dconf-editor: dconf read /org/gnome/terminal/legacy/mnemonics-enabled I have set this option to true, but nothing changes! --- If I can hypothesise what the problem is here, I can see that terminal does some clever stuff to create two different menu .ui files using XML manipulation, eg https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/tree/src/terminal-menubar.ui.in?h=ubuntu/bionic-updates https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/tree/src/Makefile.am?h=ubuntu/bionic-updates Hence there are TWO versions of the menu descriptions in Terminal. I understand there were some tricks required to implement the Unity menus on top of standard GTK applications, so perhaps this switching of the menu descriptions causes problems the way Unity picks up the menu information and exposes it. Is there a solution for this? Is there a way to compile terminal differently to get the with-mnemonic version instead of the without- mnemonic version, if it's not possible for on-the-fly switching to be enabled? ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1785444 Title: Can't enable menubar mnemonics for gnome-terminal in 18.04 under Unity To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/1785444/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1726262] Re: 17.10 - flickering overlay patterns in gnome-terminal
Confirming that this issue does occur with Ubuntu 18.04.1, i7 3770, with AMD Radeon RX 480, using AMDGPU. I'm also using the kernel ppa 4.17 from June 4th, so I can keep AMDGPU DC enabled and use my primary monitor's DVI-D dual link connection to support 120Hz refresh rate. I can also confirm that unchecking "Use transparency from system theme", checking "Use transparent background", and re-checking "Use transparency from system theme", results in a stable background. [Bug 1785165] Re: firmware update on fwupdate version 10-3 not work on some AMI's firmwares
One more dimension to add to this. Fwupd supports a "requirements" option on firmware. This allows manufacturers to prohibit installation on particular software combinations. If firmware doesn't work properly on fwupdate 10 then the manufacturer should be setting the requirement on com.redhat.fwupdate to 11 or 12. This was discussed upstream recently due to some Lenovo failures with fwupdate 10. If Ubuntu picks up a patch on 10 then that requirement won't be satisfied properly. So please bring back version 12 to Ubuntu rather than a single patch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1785165 Title: firmware update on fwupdate version 10-3 not work on some AMI's firmwares To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fwupdate/+bug/1785165/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1785434] [NEW] VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode
Public bug reported: Duplicates #1720901 VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode As per advice in the original bug, I am cloning that one as a new bug. Ubuntu version: 18.04 (most recent updates as of October 3rd) VLC version: 3.0.3 What I expect to happen: When playing a video in VLC and switching to fullscreen mode everything should work fine. Also when changing to a different position of a movie in fullscreen I expect the player to just switch to that position. What actually happens: It seems to depend a little on the file type of the video, mostly I get problems when going to fullscreen mode and then switching to a different position with the playback position bar. With some videos it was even enough to just open the fullscreen mode. The video freezes just displaying a frame while the audio keeps playing. The computer does not react any more to mouse or keyboard input, I have to perform a hard reboot. The other two require having Astrill or ESET installed; if this SRU is accepted I'll solicit feedback from people who do, although I think it would be sufficient for SRU purposes to just make sure that ordinary browsing of manual pages still works. I'm unable to reproduce this on a fresh install of munge-0.5.11-3ubuntu0.1 in 16.04. I'm guessing you just need to chown the existing logfile to the munge user. [Bug 1765363] Re: prime-select intel is not powering off the nvidia card
I am experiencing the same problem on a Dell XPS 9550 with a GTX 960M. I just upgraded from 16.04 where prime-select was able to power the graphics card down with bbswitch. Strangely enough even nouveau is perfectly capable of powering down the card if it does not have nouveau.run-pm=0 which disables the power management feature. [Bug 1785414] [NEW] Backport seccomp sandbox fixes to 16.04
Public bug reported: I applied several fixes to the seccomp sandbox in man-db 2.8.4, and I think they would all be worth backporting to 16.04. They're all corner cases, but at least the second and third of them turned up in an AskUbuntu post (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1039629/setting-up-man- db-crashes-system-with-bad-system-calls) and I had a fair amount of email responses to requests for details about it. Here are the details: * sandbox: Allow sched_setaffinity https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/man-db.git/commit/?id=8fa6fb5eca612600b3a3d8da811f8345afec102e It's possible to run into this if reading xz-compressed manual pages with (e.g.) XZ_DEFAULTS=--threads=0 set in the environment. * sandbox: Allow some shared memory operations https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/man-db.git/commit/?id=5e08ee9a4e563abedbdd2768c8bbfd96b57c1859 Some unusual software that installs itself in /etc/ld.so.preload breaks man without this patch, such as the Astrill VPN. * sandbox: Improve ESET compatibility further https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/man-db.git/commit/?id=7582fb9d69a126a53ee11223b12346d38c0f333a This is a refinement to some previous work I did to cope with ESET File Security (an antivirus program that installs itself in /etc/ld.so.preload). [Test Case] The first patch can be tested by recompressing a manual page using xz and setting XZ_DEFAULTS=--threads=0 before trying to read it. The other two require having Astrill or ESET installed; if this SRU is accepted I'll solicit feedback from people who do, although I think it would be sufficient for SRU purposes to just make sure that ordinary browsing of manual pages still works. [Regression Potential] This only adds more system calls to what the sandbox permits, so ensuring that man still works should be enough to catch all regressions. ** Affects: man-db (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Colin Watson (cjwatson) Status: Fix Released ** Affects: man-db (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: High Assignee: Colin Watson (cjwatson) Status: In Progress ** Also affects: man-db (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1785414 Title: Backport seccomp sandbox fixes to 16.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/man-db/+bug/1785414/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
