But since the change will just be a modification of the config file you can

- Open an TIF file containing an fax upside down
- Use "flip page" ("Seite umklappen") to see the page correctly
- go to print

What you get is an rather strange printout: The pixels are printed right to
left instead of left to right in small blocks of perhaps 8 Pixels.

rotating the image by 90 degree twice does result in the correct printout -
as rotating the paper after printing also does :-)

Confirming this bug.

Setting priority to "LO" (because: fipping works well for viewing on

the paper should be easy; flipping can be done in "kview" for TIFFs as

[Bug 1582318] Re: amavis virus check fails when nvidia CUDA is on the same system

2018-09-02 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Helge,
You are right, the issue exists there.
But IMHO the backport has as SRU to Xenial has quite some regression risk and
actually low gain.
Let me outline why I think so:

Looking at people that:
1. had amavisd running without - nvidia nvcc not installed
   => Things working fine
2. had amavisd running without - nvidia nvcc installed
=> amavisd is broken by this bug, but then can be fixed with a conscious
config file change
3. had amavisd running without - norman AV nvcc installed
=> Things working fine WITH norman AV

Now if we would SRU something we would:
- not help #1 being not affected
- #2 was broken, so we fix something unused (and flagging all mails can be a
thing as well since https://xkcd.com/1172/)
- for those people in #3 we would break a valid working setup

It is sort of unfortunate, but at least in my limited POV the risk actually
outweighs the gain in this case.
Also setting up "new" Xenial should no more be a major tasks these days with
Bionic being available for quite a while now.

just my 2 cents, feel free to discuss if you think otherwise.

[Bug 1790434] [NEW] Cherry pick a fix of cloud-init

2018-09-02 Thread Pengpeng Sun
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

There is a fix of cloud-init merged to main 5 days ago, see it here:
https://git.launchpad.net/cloud-init/commit/?id=9c35f9762028b8bf15cdcd6b42c0fafc233ddda3

It fixed an issue of customizing a VMware VM, I'm wondering if you could
cherry pick this fix to the current or near next Ubuntu release, or
what's schedule of rebase the cloud-init version which contains this
fix, looking forward to your comment.

Thanks,

[Bug 1790427] [NEW] Automatically install open-vm-tools when installer running in a VMware VM

It is valuable for open-vm-tools to install automatically for both
desktop and server if their OS installer detects that it is running on a
VMware VM.

This may require first work with the Debian community to get this implemented
for Debian since Ubuntu is based on Debian.

getting the most GNOME fixes.

When debugging UI Applications, this application becomes naturally
unresponsive when reaching an execution breakpoint. As a consequence, I
see the "Force Quit or Wait" dialog, which freezes the whole desktop. I
have no idea why that is, but it is super annoying.

- And this is of course not only the case when debugging, but happens as well
for a "normal" application freeze. Why does a frozen application should
immediately require my attention, no matter what else I am doing? Why does this
require my whole desktop to freeze and wait for my input?

Sometimes I just notice a desktop freeze and dont know whats going on until I
find this stupid "Quit or Wait" dialog. Super annoying.
Please make this window not freeze everything else, nothing is so important
that the whole desktop should freeze to force input.

[Bug 1789749] Re: Virtual desktops are shown in the middle of screen in GNOME Shell

2018-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Discussion continues upstream:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/517

** Description changed:

+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/517

  ---

Hi, since I use Ubuntu 18.04 with GNOME Shell I see that the virtual
desktops panel is shown in the middle of screen when I drag a file to
the Activities corner. I didn't see this behavior in 17.10, so it's
  really strange for me.

I really like gnome-session, but I drag a lot of files through
Activities, so to not see the bug I'm forced to use the Ubuntu session
(now communitheme). Yes, it's really annoying.

I share a file to show how is the bug.

  I'm using:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 64-bit.
-GNOME 3.28.2 (provided by official repos).
-Linux 4.15.0-33-generic (but I saw the bug in all previous kernels released
Ubuntu 18.04).

I saw the bug in two different GPUs:
-[AMD/ATI] RV630/M76 [Mobility Radeon HD 2600] with Mesa and free Radeon
driver provided by official repos.
-MSI NVIDIA GTX 1050 with official proprietary driver.

I think is a general bug.

[Bug 1789355] Re: Yaru login screen gradient contains visible steps

2018-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There are some general/simple solutions:

  * Avoid gradients that stretch over a long distance (the screen
height); or

  * Use dithering to hide/blend the banding. This would require some
programming effort.

[Bug 1785834] Re: Screen randomly turns black minutes after successfully login with GDM

2018-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Your journal.txt is showing the nvidia driver thinks the display
was disconnected a few minutes after boot. So normally I would say
that's a bad monitor connection (check your cables) or a driver bug.
However the first message here also suggests the blackout was triggered
by the system suspending and resuming. So please check your screensaver
and power management settings...

Unfortunately this is not a gnome-shell bug and the nvidia driver
version 396 is not supported yet because it's not released yet
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-396). So
we can keep discussing it here, but don't have a supported software
component to blame right now. Hence the status is "Invalid". :(

Alternatively as the bug is in the EISA code, if the kernel was built
without CONFIG_EISA=y then I think that would avoid it. I haven't hit
this problem on Debian stable or testing where CONFIG_EISA is not set.

[Bug 1720213] Re: Word moving with left-arrow-ctrl broken in wayland

2018-09-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Moved to gtk, per upstream.

** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Opinion => New

** No longer affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
  Ubuntu 17.10, Wayland session.

In the terminal, the keycombination `ctrl-left-arrow` and `ctrl-right-
arrow` moves the cursor one word to the left and to the right. In Xorg
this works, no matter which key you press first (ctrl or arrow). In
wayland, you have to press the ctrl key first, otherwise, the cursor
  will not move.

  # How to reproduce:

type some words in gnome terminal press `left-arrow` key, wait for the
cursor to move and, and press `ctrl`.

  # What happens

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and stops immediately
  when you press `ctrl`.

  # What should happen

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and starts moving one
word per "tick" when you press `ctrl`.

[Bug 1788547] Re: gnome-shell notifications use Yaru theme even if Yaru is not selected

2018-09-02 Thread Rocko
I'm just trying to make Ubuntu better. I'd like to stay as close as
possible to the default Ubuntu experience instead of switching to a more
pure gnome-session, and I'm saying that it would make it easier for
users to select a consistent theme if Ubuntu included the Adwaita gnome-
shell as an option so it can be selected via gnome-tweak-tool instead of
Yaru, ie including it in /usr/share/themes. That way, I expect the user
shouldn't need the user-themes extension.

Alternatively, perhaps Ubuntu could remove Adwaita-dark and the other
themes from /usr/share/themes and only ship Yaru to make it even less
convenient for users who want to theme their desktop differently from
the default. That would also fit in with the gnome 3 philosophy of
removing as many convenient features as possible! ;)

I've since removed linux from the system and handed it down to a family

expect the bug would have been fixed by now, according to the current

Freikland,
Per Kovid's comment, is your calibre library on network share or a sync service

[Bug 855202] Re: What if the network goes down after a message is composed?

2018-09-02 Thread gf
I am so sorry, Gpk, about the lack of response to your report. The bug reports
are handled by people from around the globe, the majority of whom are
volunteers. Unfortunately, they missed this one and it fell down in the queue.
I just started bug triaging a little over 2 months ago and I was quite
surprised to find there were some old tickets still unaddressed. So, I thought
I would start by trying to clear up some of these old bug reports.
I apologize again for them not getting back to you.
Take care

OK Humphrey, I understand about not wanting to upgrade. Set yourself as

action on them, you will get an email.

On this ticket, it is confirmed since Martha Bourgois has indicated that
it happens to her as well (Thanks Martha!)

[Bug 1782802] Re: use dhclient -4 instead of ipconfig in easy cases in 18.10

2018-09-02 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
** Summary changed:

- ditch ipconfig in favor of dhclient -4 in 18.10
+ use dhclient -4 instead of ipconfig in easy cases in 18.10

** Description changed:

When adding ipv6 netboot support to initramfs-tools in yakkety/zesty,
this was initially attempted with replacing ipconfig with dhclient. As
described in LP: #1621507, the use of dhclient for ipv4 dhcp was backed
out in favor of ipconfig. So at the moment, we are using both ipconfig
from klibc-utils and dhclient from isc-dhcp-client in the initramfs.

We want to switch off of klibc-utils completely and use isc-dhcp-client
- for both ipv4 and ipv6 in initramfs-tools.
+ for both ipv4 and ipv6 in initramfs-tools. But for cosmic, we'll only do
+ the easy bits. Bug 1790418 is about finishing the job.

[Bug 1789118] Re: Fails to boot under Xen PV: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at edc21fd9

2018-09-02 Thread Andy Smith
I reported the problem to Xen, and they came up with this patch:

https://lists.xenproject.org/archives/html/xen-
devel/2018-08/msg02775.html

I recompiled linux-image-4.15.0-33-generic with this patch applied and
it now works.

As far as I can see there is no working 32-bit Xen PV kernel package in
18.04, so it would be good if this could be remedied. What needs to
happen for that? Does the above fix need to reach the upstream kernel
and then be considered for backport?

Memory usage started from 170MB, and after two hours is over 360MB.

[Bug 1790409] [NEW] All gnome apps text areas seem to get messy when using nemo-desktop for desktop icons

2018-09-02 Thread Sylwester
Public bug reported:

With nemo-desktop on open gedit or gnome-system-log and it will be
impossible to see any text whatsoever because the area is filled with
whatever the background was and continious rerenders.

I think this affect apps using a certain feature in gnome libraries so
only gnome apps are affected and often the ones with white text areas.
As an example of text area not affected I notice gnome-terminal seems
fine.

Details:
I've followed

I have a bunch of notes in a different stages of grouping (basically a
tree of notes). I select them all by lassoing around them (drawing a
rectange with a selection tool, not sure what the industry term is).
Then, I click the Copy button. I go to a different basket and click the
Paste button. The notes are inserted with the right hierarchy, but their
content is gone. All pasted notes are blank.

Thanks

Can you do some extra steps?

Copy/Cut a note and paste it. I assume you will get is a blank note.
Click on the blank note and you will get a cursor to put your entry. If you
write *anything* by mistake, the old data will be overwritten.
Instead of clicking on the blank (newly pasted) note, just quit basket and
restart it. Now you will see that the blank note was not actually blank but it
contained the pasted data.

Can you check those possibilities?

I think I've fixed this. The notedrag class was trying to connect a

does have that signal. After I changed the FileCopyJob to a CopyJob,
the cut/copy/paste problems went away.

FileCopyJob and CopyJob both inherit from Kio::Job. FileCopyJob is
intended for copying/moving single files whereas CopyJob uses
FileCopyJob to move entire directory structures. I don't see any
problem with using a CopyJob in this situation, even though we are
probably only copying a single file most of the time. The CopyJob class
has much nicer external API (signals/slots and so forth).

So I grabbed commit 70b6bd3 from the basket/basket:master to test your
fix. I can now copy and paste and have things show up without
restarting. However, each note that is copy and pasted prompts me to
overwrite the note.

An example of when copying and pasting note11.html it asks me
(paraphrased): a newer item named note11-2.html already exists of size
0kb, the source file is note11.html of size 1.1KiB. If I let the
overwrite take place then things are exactly as they should be. If I
rename the file (just using the suggested name option) then a blank
entry is created, and a restart doesn't have the info in it. And

[Bug 1788487] Re: OpenStack detection broken on VMware

2018-09-02 Thread Mark
>From our experiments, doing 'b' is currently not possible. The first
thing the OpenStack datasource does is check the DMI data [1] and if it
does not match an expected platform, the metadata service is never
probed. This leaves cloud-init without any valid data source.

Ironically, the EC2 datasource works in a non-strict mode by default,
which means that it _will_ probe the metadata service. Because OpenStack
provides a EC2-compatible endpoint, it will load data from the metadata
service successfully. It however does print a warning about OpenStack
(on VMware) being an unrecognised platform.

As for identifying OpenStack platforms: I think this is an impossible
task with the large variety of distros out there, many of them built on
older OpenStack releases. If platform identification were to be made a
requirement in the next OpenStack release, it will take years before
every distro and deployment out there is updated to conform to this (if
ever). The next best thing I can come up with is adding a non-strict
mode like in the EC2 datasource (so that metadata is always probed), or
always probing the metadata service and removing OpenStack from the
default list of datasources.

Wasn't aware of that card. I have no strong opinion on the topic. If I
recall it correctly, the packages where we currently make use of "X
-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" are packages which were previously in main,
and thus we had existing Ubuntu only translations which we can keep
making use of that way. But I don't see anything which prevents us from
enabling the langpacks for more packages.

As you already mentioned, backporting a change to 18.04 would be tricky.
Maybe it would be wise to override dh_translations in bionic, and enable
langpacks going forward.

If enabling langpacks for new GNOME packages in 18.10, please remember
that LP templates need to be created.

[Bug 1790390] [NEW] Intel i915 GPU driver has wrong max resolution output for certain models

2018-09-02 Thread Kristian Robertsen
Public bug reported:

The i915 driver in the Linux kernel misrepresents the max output of
certain, newer, GPUs.

The output should be 16384x16384 for newer models (on at least 7th and
8th gen Intel CPUs) but it is stuck in 8192x8192.

The problem lies in:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c

The conditional branch which is wrong is:

/* maximum framebuffer dimensions */
if (IS_GEN2(dev_priv)) {
dev->mode_config.max_width = 2048;
dev->mode_config.max_height = 2048;
} else if (IS_GEN3(dev_priv)) {
dev->mode_config.max_width = 4096;
dev->mode_config.max_height = 4096;
} else {
dev->mode_config.max_width = 8192;
dev->mode_config.max_height = 8192;
}

While I'm not certain which generations specifically allows the higher
output it is most certainly true of all iGPUs on the 7th and 8th
generation CPUs.

This is corroborated by Intel's own hardware pages, and can be proven by
running Wayland which ignores the limitation in the driver.

Bug is present both on all Ubuntu releases, including 18.04.

[Bug 1790389] [NEW] gstreamer1.0-gtk3 should be the "rec" dependency

Just like in Debian; without gstreamer1.0-gtk3 (providing the "gtksink"
