If it is confirmed via your testing that it doesn't work in Ubuntu
kernel 4.13.0-19, then one could reverse commit bisect from 4.13.0-19 to
4.13.0-21 to find which commit(s) is the fix following

[Bug 1817832] Re: qemu crashes with `kvm_init_vcpu failed: Invalid argument` during guest boot cores >256

2019-02-26 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
TBH this isn't about "a warning/error message to be missing" - it is a request
to add the feature to be able to "Allow creating max number of VCPUs on POWER9"
and should be declared like that.
@JFH/@Manjo - I leave it to you to discuss that and make the change.

Furthermore the patches referred are kernel only, so qemu task is
invalid and I'm adding a kernel task instead.

And finally all patches are in 4.19 upstream, so Disco is already fix-released
except for SRU considerations. Since Power9 is >=Bionic that is the max SRU
target (if any).
I'll add the bug tasks but leave it to JFH/Manjo/Kernel Team to set them to
anything but "NEW".

[Bug 1816947] Re: [Dell XPS L321X] Touchpad not working after last apt-get upgrade

2019-02-26 Thread opensas
All right, I took your advice and tested several older kernels:

linux-headers-4.10.0-19_4.10.0-19.21_all.deb

linux-headers-4.11.0-13-generic_4.11.0-13.19_amd64.deb
linux-headers-4.12.0-13_4.12.0-13.14_all.deb
linux-headers-4.12.0-13-generic_4.12.0-13.14_amd64.deb

linux-image-4.12.0-13-generic_4.12.0-13.14_amd64.deb

I installed all these deb files, and booted with them, and the bug is
STILL present.

It seems like I can't reproduce the working kernel of the artful livecd.

Any idea about how should I proceed?

[Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport

2019-02-26 Thread md_5
Thanks for the link Guilherme, guess that answers that question.
Given March 4 is just round the corner, I am not sure there is much can be done
at this point, but I will however just echo what Tom beat me to saying:

As a software developer I fully understand and recognise the need to
delay things for various reasons even if it may seem everything is
primed and ready to go.

That being said I think the overall response time here has not been
great at all.

A kernel regression which breaks user space programs (including the
default TTY login), and has a small, tested patch available should
absolutely not take 3-4 weeks to be released.

I understand that this new March 4 release will have additional
unrelated patches that need that testing time, but I think breaking from
the standard SRU cycle to either revert the problematic patches, or
apply the fix would absolutely have been worth it - just look at the 13
duplicates of this bug and the posts on various other web forums /
support sites.

[Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport

2019-02-26 Thread Tom Reynolds
Considering that this is a regression, with major impact (TTY login no
longer possible, often no graphical login either), many affected users
on (amongst other) the latest LTS release, and both this fact and how to
fix it has been known since at least January 30, I am puzzled as to why
this is being handled as an update with the default stable release
cadence.

Could you kindly explain the following (since I may just be misunderstanding
how things are handled):
Was rolling back the breaking (since incomplete) patchset (which introduced
this issue) not an option?
Has testing on 18.04 and 16.04 brought up new problems, which would have had
even more serious impact?
How is "importance" calculated (personally I would have set it to "critical" or
"major", if those are available)?

Thanks.

tests (not broken by qemu but needing cleanup). Furthermore the 2.11.2 changes
need the same machine type cleanup as in our former discussion about the same
topic - but that I can do on my own.
Just to let you know why this takes a while this time, but IIRC this isn't of a
particular urgency right now (let me know you think different) - I checked CVEs
all that are contained we have already.

[Bug 1817830] [NEW] only 1000 characters of text pasted in, silently loses the rest

2019-02-26 Thread themusicgod1
Public bug reported:

what happens:

when you select a block of text >1000 characters, it is truncated to
1000 characters

what should happen:
ricochet should either send in batches of 1000 or just let you send a message
>1000 characters long, either way obscuring any technical limitation on how
much is sent per message to the user

ubuntu: 18.04 bionic LTS
ricochet: 1.1.4-2build1

(this also happens on another platform with an earlier build of
ricochet).

[Bug 1813372] Re: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac connection

2019-02-26 Thread David R. Bergstein
Per the request above, a message has been sent to the maintainers list
in entry #20 (below is a copy).

Subject: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac
connection

To: pks...@realtek.com, linux-wirel...@vger.kernel.org,
 net...@vger.kernel.org, linux-ker...@vger.kernel.org

This message is in regard to a bug I have open on bugs.launchpad.net,
1813372, linked below. This issue, originally identified in an Ubuntu
kernel, has been duplicated in the most current mainline kernel,
5.0-rc8, and is in regard to problems attaining a wireless connection at
802.11ac speeds.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813372

At your earliest convenience, please see the bug report above, and
advise if a fix will be available for the r8822be kernel module.

Sincerely,

David R. Bergstein

[Bug 1704310] Re: [Bug] Crystal Ridge - null pointer de-reference in device unregister path

2019-02-26 Thread quanxian
** Description changed:

  Description:

If I run the following script in a loop, and then ctrl-c it, the kernel
hits a BUG in the device unregister path.

  --[ns-reconf.sh]--
  function pmem_btt_dax_switch() {
  sector_size_list="512 520 528 4096 4104 4160 4224"
  for sector_size in $sector_size_list; do
  ndctl create-namespace -f -e namespace$
  {1}.0 --mode=sector -l $sector_size
  ndctl create-namespace -f -e namespace${1}

  .0 --mode=raw
  ndctl create-namespace -f -e namespace$
  {1}

  .0 --mode=dax
  done
  }
  for i in 0 1 2 3; do
  pmem_btt_dax_switch $i &
  done
  --[ns-reconf.sh]--

  while true; do ./ns-reconfig.sh 0; ./ns-reconfig.sh 1; done

I've tried three times and hit the bug every time, so it seems readily
  reproducible.

Offset 0x20 is the put function pointer in struct klist. This is where
  the null pointer is triggered:

  static void klist_put(struct klist_node *n, bool kill)
  {
  struct klist *k = knode_klist;
  void (*put)(struct klist_node *) = k->put; <

This is the tip of Linus' tree, commit be941bf2e6a32.

  Any ideas?

[Bug 1767648] Re: Top bar and shell dialogs are not displayed properly when zoom is enabled

2019-02-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
And it only occurred to me today that zoom performance should (and does
seem to) increase too. Because the combination of the two fixes:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/commit/8655bc5d
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/commit/f77b3da7

means that panels/docks don't need to get regenerated every time you
move the mouse while in zoom.

[Bug 1817682] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 interface freeze - during video call or screen sharing (using Slack or Zoom)

2019-02-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1815935] Re: Regression in 2.3.4-4+deb8u1build0.16.04.1 on scp command parsing

2019-02-26 Thread Russ Allbery
Debian has released the fix for both stable and oldstable. As I said
above, I personally don't use Ubuntu, don't maintain the Ubuntu package,
and don't have upload rights to Ubuntu, so I'm afraid I can't help with
fixing the bug in Ubuntu. Presumably you need to find someone who works
on Ubuntu to import the fix from Debian, if that doesn't happen
automatically.

The fixed Debian packages are available from:

https://packages.debian.org/source/stable/updates/rssh
https://packages.debian.org/source/oldstable/updates/rssh

It's possible that one or the other may install unmodified on your
Ubuntu system; I don't know.

[Bug 1796144] Re: [SRU] xfwm4 4.12.5 for bionic

2019-02-26 Thread Sean Davis
** Summary changed:

- ubuntu 18.04 bionic xfwm4 backport 4.12.5
+ [SRU] xfwm4 4.12.5 for bionic

** Description changed:

- I suggest that xfmw4 version 4.12.5 be backported to ubuntu 18.04
- Release notes for 4.12.5
-
+ [Impact]
+
+ * Please see the upstream bugs for some background:
+- Mozilla Bugzilla #1461539: [XFCE] window not maximized after fullscreen
video
+- Xfce Bugzilla #14514: Unable to maximize in both horizontal and vertical
directions via X11
+
+ * Xfwm4 versions prior to 4.12.5 fail to maintain the window maximization
state when exiting a fullscreen video.
+
+ * As seen in comments 9
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1461539#c9) and 10
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1461539#c10), version 4.12.5
resolves this issue.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * In Firefox, follow these steps to enable the CSD window.
+1. Click the Hamburger menu, then select "Customize..."
+2. In the bottom section, uncheck the "Title Bar" option.
+3. Close the "Customize Firefox" tab.
+
+ * With Xfwm 4.12.4 (bionic), follow these steps to reproduce the bug.
+1. Maximize the Firefox window.
+2. View a YouTube video.
+3. Click the Fullscreen button to enter make the video fullscreen.
+4. Press Escape to exit fullscreen.
+5. The window is no longer maximized.
+
+ * With Xfwm 4.12.5, follow these steps to verify the bug is resolved.
+1. Maximize the Firefox window.
+2. View a YouTube video.
+3. Click the Fullscreen button to enter make the video fullscreen.
+4. Press Escape to exit fullscreen.
+5. The window is still maximized.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Regression potential is low since this is a point release that only
addresses bugs.
+
+ * Since Xfwm4 is the window manager for Xfce, a crash could leave the user's
windows undecorated and unable to be moved.
+
+ [Release Notes for 4.12.5]

[Bug 1817620] Re: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing

2019-02-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Performance of window previews is significantly improved in mutter
3.28.4 (which doesn't exist yet :) due to:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/commit/d81dcd13e4e14a8c80b7c9d475feb58c258babc0

But I think 18.04 will get that fix soon as part of the proposed update:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/3.28.3+git20190124-0ubuntu18.04.1

Gnome 3.30 (Ubuntu 18.10) onward already contains that fix. So could you
please test one of:

 * Ubuntu 18.10
 * Ubuntu 19.04
 * Ubuntu 18.04 with proposed updates enabled

and tell us the version of the 'mutter' package you are testing.

[Bug 1816634] Re: GNOME Shell consistently ignores mouse clicks in a particular app window

2019-02-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
This is similar in some ways to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1181666 but
affects only the mouse, not the keyboard, and is consistent almost all
(99%+) of the time. This is happening for Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS (bionic)
in the default desktop environment (Ubuntu). It also happens for the
GNOME and GNOME Classic desktop environments. The version of gnome-
  shell is 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4.

Our program is a blend of C# winforms (Mono) with embedded web browser
windows using Geckofx45 (mozilla version 45). Editing windows in the
program use HTML to display formatting and typescript/javascript code
to assist with popup dialogs and other editing help. Inside these
editing windows, left mouse clicks are essentially ignored. Keyboarding
still works fine as far as I can tell. Clicking on the gear button
inside the editing window fails to bring up the Styles dialog more than
95% of the time. When the dialog does display, it is always (100%)
nonfunctional as the first click in it causes it to close immediately.

Tracing the internal behavior of the code, it appears that clicking the
first time inside the editing (browser) window causes a series of
WM_FOCUS messages to be sent and the javascript to hook up a left mouse
click handler to a gear button displayed in the lower left corner of the
editing window. This is the expected behavior, and the same as on other
window managers. But then, on GNOME Shell only, a series of
WM_KILLFOCUS messages are sent immediately. This does not happen for
other window managers. (The main window receives a WM_ACTIVATE message
with the argument to make it deactivate.) Any other left mouse clicks
inside that window are ignored >95% of the time, probably only when
double clicking quickly enough to occur before those messages to lose
focus/deactivate are handled. (Right mouse clicks are handled at a
higher level and appear to function normally.)

The program in question is called Bloom. The source code is available
  at https://github.com/BloomBooks/BloomDesktop and prebuilt debian/ubuntu
packages are available at http://packages.sil.org/ubuntu/ as bloom-
desktop or bloom-desktop-beta. After spending a few days looking at
this problem, I've reluctantly come to the conclusion that it must be a
GNOME Shell bug that I can't work around in our code. It's working fine
in Microsoft Windows and all the other Linux window managers that I've
tested (Unity, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma, MATE, XFCE, and LXDE).

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2019-02-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Note to self, and others:

I think there might still be uninitialized memory problems in mutter,
similar to an earlier fix:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/commit/294cceaeb8ecfd468132eff8af1f75c9d60ff21d

I remember thinking at the time that similar bugs might exist elsewhere
in mutter, but was focussed on fixing just the bug at hand (which I
could reproduce). Unfortunately I cannot reproduce bug 1181666, so
that's one reason why it's not yet fixed.

Separately, as mentioned in comment #68, there's a chance that this
patch might help:

Screenshots showing installed version attached, as well as the NGINX

in front of it to show it does work out of the box with a standard
