Hi again,

I have to add now that it only worked once. The second time I manually
triggered the lock screen the same behavior went back. I also
deactivated the Workspace-Matrix extension and it did not help.

So there is more happening under the hood.

Sorry for the confusion.

[Bug 1881241] [NEW] My HP laserjet 1018 stopped printing from Ubuntu 18.04

2020-05-28 Thread gwyn thomas
Public bug reported:

I originally installed 16.04 on my newly acquired Dell Studio 2 months
ago. I then installed my HP Laserjet 1018 and it ran well. I upgraded
to 18.04 and the printer continued to work well until this morning when
it decided not to work. I have checked the cables which all work. I do
have an HP 6300 connected and it works when the same cable is plugged
into it. The 1018 printer is switched on. I did switch 1018 on and off
and it resets. I even ran a test page on the printer but cannot print
test page from laptop.

Hi there,

the deactivation of the following extensions solved the issue at my
Ubuntu 20.4 system:

'workspace-indica...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'panel-...@berend.de.schouwer.gmail.com'

I have 14 further extensions including workspace-matrix.
They all work well.

May it help and thanx to you all!

cheers

[Bug 1881239] Re: Installation crashes

2020-05-28 Thread Chris Guiver
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1874662 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874662

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by bad ISO download,
corrupted install media, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and
you'll see messages like these :-

May 29 04:49:04 ubuntu kernel: [ 70.370485] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
May 29 04:49:04 ubuntu kernel: [   70.370489] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x6189d204

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a bad ISO or
faulty device (inc. bad write-to-device). If you believe I'm in error,
please leave a comment explaining why and change the status back to
'New'. I suggest you verify your ISO download, and use the 'check disc
for defects' option to validate your media before install to ensure a
good download & write.

Possibly useful : https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-
verify-ubuntu#0 and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck  (where
CD refers to your install media, be it CD, DVD, HDD, SSD, thumb-drive
etc)

[Bug 1881212] Re: Blank Screen initiates then fails

2020-05-28 Thread Graham Williams
Thanks. Yes - I can see now that it is a gnome-shell segfault. Turning
off the gnome-shell extension dash-to-panel
(https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1160/dash-to-panel/) resolves
the issue. I notice on the extension's page someone has also reported
the problem there. Workaround for now is to disable the dash-to-panel
extension until it is updated.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1880041 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1880041

Buen día chicos , les traigo una solución , que es subir el kernel a una
versión mas estable , en mi caso use "ukuu" para poder instalar otro kernel
https://github.com/teejee2008/ukuu/releases ,

[Bug 1753159] Re: Openbox Syntax Error lubuntu-rc.xml is Empty

2020-05-28 Thread Christian Sirolli
Being that is was 2 years ago, I don't remember exactly what I did. I
can only assume at this point, since I am not in a position right now to
replicate this issue and try to work around it again. However I will try
to give instructions to help, so be aware that I might not be giving
sufficient instructions. I am assuming you can access the terminal in
some form, and hopefully know at least the basics of working with the
terminal.

Create a new user using the adduser command, you can use the following
link to a tutorial on how to do it:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-and-delete-
users-on-ubuntu-18-04

You will want to grant the new user sudoers privileges, so be sure to
follow those instructions as well.

After creating a new user, copy the files from the old user's home
directory to the new user's home directory, specifically the .config
directory so your app configurations are saved. It may be best to copy
everything over. Assuming you are still logged into the old user, the
best way is via the terminal with a modified version of this command:

sudo cp ~/* /home//

Otherwise, use this command:

sudo cp /home//* /home/

Of course, replace with the old user name, and
 with the new user name. This is the same with the
following command, but be sure to leave the colon in place.

Use chown to make sure the new user has the appropriate permissions:

   sudo chown : /home//*

Log out and log into the new user to see if everything is working fine
before proceeding to delete the old user. Use the same tutorial in the
link above to delete a user.

[Bug 1874194] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 HDMI connected, no boot

2020-05-28 Thread Luca Palermo
This has effected me as well.

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon with Nvidia GTX 1650. New Ubuntu 20.04
install.

When I boot up, the built-in screen does not work and it hangs with the
Lenovo and Ubuntu logo.

When I boot up with an external monitor via HDMI, it boots up BUT build-
in screen does not work.

If I use the Inter Drivers (radio button in the NVIDIA X Server app) it
will boot with the built-in screen working BUT not HDMI / DP working.

[Bug 1863086] Re: unkillable process (kernel NULL pointer dereference)

2020-05-28 Thread Matthew Ruffell
The commit has landed in 5.3.0-56-generic on eoan and 5.4.0-38-generic
on focal, currently in -proposed.

Verification for each kernel:

I set the sysctl kernel.core_pattern to "|" with:

$ sudo sysctl kernel.core_pattern="|"

I then compiled the following reproducer:

int main()
{
*(int*)33 = 33;

return 0;
}

When running the program, we get a segfault, and the coredump handler
kicks in, and we see the following in dmesg:

[   34.025572] format_corename failed
[   34.025572] Aborting core

This is a change in the original behaviour, but technically more correct
than it used to be, since it simply bails out earlier in the coredump
process than before when we confirm we have an invalid core_pattern name
string.

The systems no longer get a null pointer dereference in the kernel, and
no longer panic. The system keeps working as usual now.

I have confirmed the above on both 5.3.0-56-generic on eoan and
5.4.0-38-generic on focal, so I am happy to mark this as verified.

[Bug 1881225] [NEW] do these error messages leak secrets?

2020-05-28 Thread Seth Arnold
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Hello, a coworker pasted this error message:

https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/pnNx7Rsfyr/

which appears to include a hex-encoded version of user-data supplied to
a cloud guest that failed to launch:

 juju list-machines
Machine State DNSInst id Series AZ
   Message
23   down   10.xx.xx.xx  ----  bionic  nova
 failed to start machine 23 (cannot run instance: failed to run a server with
nova.RunServerOpts{Name:"juju-b11c42-ubuntu-23",
FlavorId:"-xx-xxx-",
ImageId:"-xx-xxx-", UserData:[]uint8{0x1f, 0x8b,
0x8, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0xff,
...

The UserData field is quite long and looks like it can contain plaintext
passwords:
- https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#set-passwords
- https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#apt-configure
- https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#lxd
-
https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#redhat-subscription

or access tokens:
-
https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#redhat-subscription
- https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/modules.html#landscape

Is this error message only available to people who could read the
supplied user data through another mechanism?

Can the secrets be elided from the user data before it's printed to logs
or output for user consumption?

Thanks

[Bug 1881212] Re: Blank Screen initiates then fails

2020-05-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. This sounds like gnome-shell has crashed and
is being restarted:

> Whilst it is blanking, any running applications show their windows
(which is not usual) but it appears gnome-shell and the window manager
are not running (no dash and no window decorations).

When gnome-shell crashes the apps are still running on the bare Xorg
server so it looks different.

[Bug 1881212] Re: Blank Screen initiates then fails

2020-05-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1881190] Re: dock missing

2020-05-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You don't seem to have the dock enabled. You have:

'apps-m...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'places-m...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com',
'window-l...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'workspace-indica...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'windowsnaviga...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'drive-m...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com'

Unfortunately I can't recommend a simple GUI option to fix this that
works in Ubuntu 18.04 because the old GUI is buggy (bug 1718850) and the
new GUI is missing (gnome-shell-extension-prefs).

Please try:

  sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock

and if that didn't work after a reboot then you will need to edit your
gsettings:

  org.gnome.shell enabled-extensions

and add 'ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com'.

Alternatively, if you can then please just install Ubuntu 20.04
(https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04/).

[Bug 1880041] Re: Failing to shutdown/power off or reboot on AMD Ryzen CPUs on kernel versions 5.3.0-52 and later

2020-05-28 Thread Matias N. Goldberg
[BISECTED], FOUND

After bisecting, I found the troublesome commit:

drm/amdgpu: fix gfx hang during suspend with video playback (v2)

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-
bionic.git/commit/?id=6ad2b975986441870a9a67051f9571b5c09c2569

This problem is known and already has a bugfix in upstream:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1094

Now that the problem has been identified and it affects normal operation
of hardware I ask the ticket be raised to CRITICAL and either fixes in
DRM upstream be backported to 18.04 LTS HWE, or the patch undone.

Thanks

[Bug 1880405] Re: High CPU and journal flooded with: JS ERROR: TypeError: null has no properties _onFocusChanged@resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/closeDialog.js:135:9

2020-05-28 Thread Dan
Please push out a fix for this ASAP, once this tight loop is hit the
machine becomes an unusable 100% CPU using mess. I know of several
others suffering exactly the same bug.

For me this can be reproduced by having a terminal using half the screen
(using CMD+LEFT), then switching to fullscreen (F11) and back (F11).
Repeating this some number of times triggers this tight loop of 100% CPU
usage. After that, it's difficult to get window focus and windows are
slow to respond to anything.

To recover I use `killall -3 gnome-shell`, which allows Gnome to restart
but then has the delightful affect of throwing windows around the screen
randomly and forgetting there are multiple monitors.

[Bug 1881214] [NEW] syslog and kern.log grow endlessly - related to Intel wifi?

2020-05-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu Mate 20.04, with all supplied kernels up to 5.4.0.33

I occasionally see a message on my screen that disk space is low. I try
rebooting since my computer is unresponsive. Normal reboot does not
work, sudo reboot does not work. I have to power off the machine using
power button. Machine boots but hangs because its trying to repair
journal info.

I can't see what causes that since I was not using my computer at the
time.

So with a live session, I can see that syslog and kern.log files have
grown to several GB until the drive is full.

When using an upstream kernel 5.4.43-050443-generic x86_64, I haven't had any
problem so far.
Never had this issue with previous Ubuntu versions with the very same hardware
configuration, since 16.04.

Included: partial syslog and kern.log with the same message repeated
over and over.

[Bug 1881213] [NEW] System hangs at reboot or poweroff. kworker blocked at dp_altmode_work

2020-05-28 Thread Jordan Liu
Public bug reported:

Expected:
System reboots/powers off.

Actual:
System hangs with the plymouth bootsplash with the Kubuntu logo. Pressing
escape shows `[OK] Reached target Reboot`. `journalctl -b -1` shows at the end.
```
May 28 16:33:21 jordan-ThinkPad systemd[1]: Shutting down.
May 28 16:33:21 jordan-ThinkPad systemd-shutdown[1]: Syncing filesystems and
block devices.
May 28 16:33:21 jordan-ThinkPad systemd-shutdown[1]: Sending SIGTERM to
remaining processes...
May 28 16:33:21 jordan-ThinkPad systemd-journald[454]: Journal stopped
```
Letting the computer continue to idle, an error message shows up. I've attached
a picture because the error message does not show up in any logs.

Possibly a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1872817, though the
other user did not mention the same symptoms.

[Bug 1807974] Re: Wireless regularly breaking (ath10k firmware crashed!) after upgrade to Cosmic on Dell XPS 13 9370

2020-05-28 Thread Michaël Van Damme
Same problem for me. Dell XPS 13 9380 ubuntu edition.
Happens at least once a day, sometimes more often. Seems to happen more when
the network load is not high.
I've upgraded to the latest firmware, but without improvement.

[Bug 1878682] Re: IPv6 not enabled by default

2020-05-28 Thread Kevin Otte
Ryan,

Thank you so much for taking the time to go over the constraints and
competing goals. It's always helpful to know what constituencies are
involved.

I think this would be a good compromise to get things moving. In my case
of downloading the cloud image and specifying NoCloudNet via the SMBIOS
serial number option, another key might be the simplest path. Something
like:

n=4  : configure IPv4 only (default now)
n=6  : configure IPv6 only
n=64 : configure both stacks

I might then pass in:
ds=nocloud-net;n=6;h=cloudtest;i=iid-local01;s=http://gemini.home.nivex.net/cidata/

Of course it's easy for me to throw out such a suggestion since I don't
know how much is involved in the codebase. Is this something that might
be doable in the near future?

[Bug 1881212] [NEW] Blank Screen initiates then fails

2020-05-28 Thread Graham Williams
Public bug reported:

Blank Screen initiates after timeout (usually 5 minutes but set to 1
minute to replicate this bug), screen goes blank on both laptop and
external Dell, but immediately comes back on. Whilst it is blanking, any
running applications show their windows (which is not usual) but it
appears gnome-shell and the window manager are not running (no dash and
no window decorations).

Disconnecting external monitor exhibits the same Blank Screen failure on
the laptop screen.

I have turned Automatic Screen Lock off for now to remove that as a
cause.

I have also had intermittent failure of gnome-shell.
