[Bug 1889721] [NEW] xenial/linux: 4.4.0-186.216 - Problem with NFS mount

2020-07-30 Thread Andreas Moehrlein
Public bug reported:

Xenial Package: linux-image-generic (4.4.0.186.192)

Since Xenial Kernel upgrade to version linux: 4.4.0-186.216, there is a
problem with the NFS mounts, when the NFS Server has a timeout.

The journal and syslog are reporting thousands of the following messages per
second
Jul 30 09:05:07 ... kernel: [ 280.904750] xs_tcp_setup_socket: connect
returned unhandled error -1

The server becomes instable and OS hungs. Reboot resolves the issue
until the next NFS timeout occures.

using the previous kernel Linux 4.4.0-185-generic resolves the issue.

Sorry I still can't see what the issue is/was from that link.

Worth noting that @3v1n0 continues to fix bugs in that patch with every
update, including in 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 which is in focal-proposed.

But if you don't need a fix anymore and don't need to discuss it further
then this bug can be closed. Feel free to add comments and additional

available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.27 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See

to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-xenial. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in

We (System76) were able to replicate the issue on most of our NVIDIA

repackaged mutter in Pop without the patch, so it's no longer a problem
for us.

You can find screenshots of the problem in this issue:

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

This took down one of my Digital Ocean droplets running Debian 10 (because I

But I was able to fix it similar to Bernd by booting the DO recovery ISO (that
runs Ubuntu), mount my root disk at /mnt, chroot, and then run:
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/vda

> How do I tell whether my grub is ok (without rebooting)?

I too would like to know this. I have a linode server with OS on
/dev/sda, that grub-install doesn't like:

root@radish-linode:~# grub-install /dev/sda
Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: warning: File system `ext2' doesn't support embedding.
grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed
in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and
their use is discouraged..
grub-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists.
root@localhost:~# file -s /dev/sda
/dev/sda: DOS/MBR boot sector

I don't know whether to force it or not.

[Bug 1889114] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Update Breaks KVM Wireless Mouse

2020-07-30 Thread Joe Herko
I executed the apport-collect 1889114 command as instructed. It appears
that a number of txt files were uploaded.

However, the instructions also said to change the status to "Confirmed".
I was not able to change the status. The "status" info pulldown seems
to indicate that the "reporter" can not change the status to
"Confirmed".

2020-07-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also, it appears you've at least partially disabled some graphics
drivers with this kernel parameter:

  nomodeset

If you don't know the reason for that then please remove it from
/etc/default/grub and then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.

After rebooting please run:

  dmesg > dmesg1.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1889114] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Update Breaks KVM Wireless Mouse

2020-07-30 Thread Joe Herko
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I installed Ubuntu 18.04 updates on July 21st. This was a relatively
small update with kernel related files from what I remember when
installing the update. Since the update, my KVM connected Logitech G305
wireless mouse functionality is broken. The KVM keyboard and display
  still function correctly.

I have 2 computers (desktop and laptop) connected to a KVM switch. The
2 computers are dual boot Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 7 Pro. This KVM
setup has worked since 2015 with versions of Linux Mint 17.x, Ubuntu
  18.04, and Windows 7 Pro.

  The KVM (ConnectPro 14+)

  • Has a video cable from each computer to the KVM
  • Has a USB control cable from each computer to the KVM
  • Has a video cable from the KVM to the display
  • Has a USB-to-PS/2 adapter connecting the KVM keyboard output to the
PS/2 keyboard
  • Has a KVM USB extension cable with the Logitech G305 wireless mouse
receiver plugged into the USB connector.

The extension cable is used to locate the receiver in proximity to the
  wireless mouse.

I updated Ubuntu on the desktop on July 21st. Since the update, I have
lost wireless mouse functionality to the desktop. But, I still have
functionality with Win 7 Pro, and with the Ubuntu 18.04 laptop that was
  not updated.

KVM Wireless Mouse function matrix (see attached image)

I replaced the mouse battery, so that is not the problem.

I verified that a wired mouse and the wireless Logitech G305 mouse both
work properly when plugged directly into a USB port on the M83 desktop.

I replaced the wireless mouse with a wired mouse on the KVM mouse input,
and the 4 configurations above worked OK (including the desktop with the
  July updates).

So, I think that the July 21st update broke some function(s) in the
handling of the wireless mouse USB controls signals between the desktop
  computer and the KVM switch.

  1. Can I provide any additional configuration information, and, if so,
what terminal commands should I run?
  2. How do I recover from this problem?
  3. Can I back-out the update? If so, how will this impact future updates?
  4. What else can I try to restore the wireless mouse functionality?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

[Bug 1889556] Re: grub-install failure does not fail package upgrade (and does not roll back to matching modules)

2020-07-30 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Robert, or anyone else affected,

Accepted grub2 into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/2.04-1ubuntu26.2
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1889699] [NEW] Brave is not included in the Ubuntu helpers

2020-07-30 Thread François Marier
Public bug reported:

The Brave browser is not included in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions
/ubuntu-browsers and /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/ubuntu-helpers which
means that when it's set as a default browser by a user, profiles like
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince break.

In this case, it means that users can't click on web links in PDFs for
example: https://community.brave.com/t/brave-does-not-open-links-
clicked-when-set-as-default-browser/146608/9

  [Impact]
On the LENOVO AMD renoir machines, there is a digital mic directly
connected to the APU instead of the codec, so there are two separate
sound cards in the system, one is for analogue codec driven by hda
driver, the other is for the dmic driven by ASoC acp driver.

  The current audio stack (pulseaudio + alsa-ucm-conf + alsa-lib) doesn't
support this design yet, it could support all audio devices on the codec
well, but it doesn't support that dmic well. In the gnome-control-center,
the dmic becomes two input devices: analog input and multichannel input,
and users can only record sound from analog input, the multichannel input
can't function at all. Besides this issue, there is another issue, after
users plug an external mic, the external mic can't replace the dmic
automatically, this gives users a bad experience since this behaviour is
different from the other audio designs.

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

2020-07-30 Thread Bernd Porr
Also affects my desktop Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. Took me ages because the original
desktop boot disk for bionic just gave a blank monitor but here is a fix:
I downloaded the boot/repair iso
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/) and created a bootable USB
disk with the startup disk creator on another Linux box.
Then I did a manual grub re-install via the terminal (didn't use the one-click
rescue of the ISO):
sudo -s
mount /dev/sdaX /mnt
grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda

inadvertent deleting files is not possible

our standard applications are associated with the

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

Above most likely means that dpkg debconf no longer knows about the
correct drives to install grub onto.

Please boot & mount all the target disks and execute

  $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

You will be asked which drives to install grub onto, and then grub will
be installed onto them, and more importantly, it will remember where to
install grub to, on all future upgrades.

I was able to recreate the upgrade failure by installing the following
packages:

python-pyqt5.qtwebchannel
python-pyqt5.qtsensors-dbg
python-pyqt5.qtopengl-dbg

I'm not sure if all three are required if a subset will also produce the

I removed that directory and copied all those fonts to ~/.fonts and the

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

2020-07-30 Thread Pat Viafore
Thank you @ianchanning for the recovery notes through the portal.

I'll also add in a few links that might help.
For users looking for general recovery steps :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/GRUB2SecureBootBypass#Recovery

For users looking how to mitigate this before rebooting:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/GRUB2SecureBootBypass#Known_issues

@hggdh2 Thank you for the informatoin, I am working with rcj on reproducing
this issue. I was able to reproduce this issue with the following steps:

Launch an Ubuntu VM in Azure

az vm create --name grub-test --resource-group
--location southcentralus --image
Canonical:UbuntuServer:18.04-LTS:18.04.201906271 --size Standard_D2s_v3
--admin-username ubuntu --ssh-key-value

Apt update and install grub:
sudo apt update
DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive sudo apt install grub2-common

You will see a prompt indicating that grub has failed to install.

Here's a pastebin of relevant disk information that I was able to gather before
I installed grub. In #ubuntu-release on FreeNode there was talk of NVME devices
exacerbating this bug, but there are no nvme devices on this instance (as
checked by ls /dev/nvme*)

[Bug 1415502] Re: Couldn't bind port 51413 on 192.168.1.xxx: Cannot assign requested address (net.c:371)

2020-07-30 Thread Bachsau
A bug from 2015 and still "new". Nice – Here's a fix:
Edit the systemd unit file with `sudo systemctl edit --full
transmission-daemon.service` and replace the line

> After=network.target

with the lines

> After=network-online.target
> Wants=network-online.target

With this, systemd should wait for the network to become fully available
before starting the daemon.

[Bug 1889258] Re: Cannot import SSH key (import button greyed out)

2020-07-30 Thread Ricky Hewitt
Hi Sebastien,

The type of key is a 2048-bit RSA key.

Additional notes:

- The issue occurs with both password & passwordless keys.
- The issue only occurs when importing. (Creating a new SSH key via the
Seahorse UI works fine)

There are no warnings or journalctl output.

[Bug 1889059] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

--- Comment From i...@de.ibm.com 2020-07-30 17:13 EDT---
Unfortunately zlib does not accept patches at the moment, so it is unlikely
that this fix will be accepted in the strict sense of the word anytime soon.
However, I will include
https://github.com/iii-i/zlib/commit/aff708461f9903055edf07c8e908f860788d069d,
which contains this fix, into my "official" hardware acceleration pull request
(https://github.com/madler/zlib/pull/410) in the next few days.
