Rebooted and tried updating again. Did not work.
Chose partial update this time and everything downloaded once more with
5.13.0.11 kernel and all processes completed. Rebooted and got the new look
with dual desktops showing up.

Sounds like a BIOS issue and Lenovo seems to have a BIOS update newer
than your BIOS.

It is also possible that you are running recovery mode which basically
skips many drivers, including VGA drivers.
You may want to install proprietary Nvidia GPU Drivers (example:
