[Bug 1956845] Re: amdgpu: [gfxhub0] retry page fault

2022-01-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Oh actually maybe avoid Ubuntu 21.10 for the moment because of
regression bug 1956401. You might want to try Ubuntu 22.04 (preview)
though. It is fully functional already.

[Bug 1955932] Re: ps5 controller no longer working

2022-01-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I've just set up a brand new PS5 controller (via Bluetooth) on Ubuntu
20.04 with kernel 5.11.0-44-generic and 'sudo evtest' seems to show it
is working. It reports events for almost all the buttons.

Re-reading your bug report I think you have a problem specific to Steam.

The errors you mention from Xorg (gdm-x-session[1946]: (II) ...) are
probably not relevant and should be ignored.

2022-01-09 Thread Ddl-github
I was just relaying what I found reported in a different thread on this
bug. I can't personally confirm the gnome patch is effective, because
Pop 21.10 uses gnome 40.5, and I don't have time to try to build from
source. Hopefully it will be gone in 22.04.

[Bug 1783964] Re: Please make CONFIG_PWM_LPSS_PCI and CONFIG_PWM_LPSS_PLATFORM built in to make brightness adjustment working on various BayTrail/CherryTrail-based devices

2022-01-09 Thread Jeffry Johnston
This is somewhat off topic, but the fix in the description remains
useful and is required to enable backlight brightness adjustment for the
HP Stream 7 when running Debian 11 (Linux 5.10).

Example steps (to be run in an i386 environment, such as a debootstrap
chroot jail):

apt install fakeroot devscripts
apt build-dep linux
apt source linux
cd linux-5.10.84/ # Change as needed
nano debian/config/kernelarch-x86/config
# Make the kernel configuration changes as in the description
debuild -b -uc -us
# Install linux-image-5.10.0-10-686-unsigned_5.10.84-1_i386.deb

[Bug 1956519] Re: kernel panic after upgrading to kernel 5.13.0-23

2022-01-09 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Vadik, Oliver,

Thanks for reporting, and sorry that 5.13.0-24-generic in -proposed
didn't solve the issue.

Let's do some analysis:

[1.381250] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 000c
[1.381270] RIP: 0010:amd_sfh_hid_client_init+0x47/0x350 [amd_sfh]
[1.381299] Call Trace:
[1.381302]  ? __pci_set_master+0x5f/0xe0
[1.381310]  amd_mp2_pci_probe+0xad/0x160 [amd_sfh]
[1.381314]  local_pci_probe+0x48/0x80
...

Okay, so a null pointer dereference in the amd_sfh module. The c in
000c probably means offset +12 in the struct we are trying
to access.

Let's see where this is:

$ eu-addr2line -ifae
./usr/lib/debug/lib/modules/5.13.0-23-generic/kernel/drivers/hid/amd-sfh-hid/amd_sfh.ko
 amd_sfh_hid_client_init+0x47
0x0767
amd_sfh_hid_client_init
/build/linux-k2e9CH/linux-5.13.0/drivers/hid/amd-sfh-hid/amd_sfh_client.c:147:27

Let's have a look:

134 int amd_sfh_hid_client_init(struct amd_mp2_dev *privdata)
135 {
...
146
147 cl_data->num_hid_devices = amd_mp2_get_sensor_num(privdata,
_data->sensor_idx[0]);
148
...

Okay, so we are dereferencing either cl_data->num_hid_devices or
_data->sensor_idx[0], but they are both in cl_data, so cl_data will
be NULL.

Since you mentioned that it worked in 5.13.0-22-generic, and broke in
5.13.0-23-generic, lets see if this changed in 5.13.0-23-generic:

$ git log --grep "amd_sfh" Ubuntu-5.13.0-22.22..Ubuntu-5.13.0-23.23
commit d46ef750ed58cbeeba2d9a55c99231c30a172764
commit-impish 56559d7910e704470ad72da58469b5588e8cbf85
Author: Evgeny Novikov
Date:   Tue Jun 1 19:38:01 2021 +0300
Subject:HID: amd_sfh: Fix potential NULL pointer dereference
Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d46ef750ed58cbeeba2d9a55c99231c30a172764

Okay, so this patch changes the parent function to
amd_sfh_hid_client_init(), which is amd_mp2_pci_probe().

+   rc = amd_sfh_hid_client_init(privdata);
+   if (rc)
+   return rc;
+
privdata->cl_data = devm_kzalloc(>dev, sizeof(struct
amdtp_cl_data), GFP_KERNEL);
if (!privdata->cl_data)
return -ENOMEM;
...
-   return amd_sfh_hid_client_init(privdata);
+   return 0;

So it seems we are moving the call to amd_sfh_hid_client_init(privdata) from
the end of the function up a bit, and interestingly, before the call to
privdata->cl_data = devm_kzalloc().

So... we are using privdata->cl_data before it is being allocated? Looks
like we have found our NULL pointer dereference.

I suppose the commit to "fix" the null pointer dereference actually
introduced another one.

Looking at this commit in the upstream tree, I came across:

commit 88a04049c08cd62e698bc1b1af2d09574b9e0aee
Author: Basavaraj Natikar
Date:   Thu Sep 23 17:59:27 2021 +0530
Subject: HID: amd_sfh: Fix potential NULL pointer dereference
Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/88a04049c08cd62e698bc1b1af2d09574b9e0aee

This patch seems to move the call to after cl_data is allocated, which
should fix this.

-   rc = amd_sfh_hid_client_init(privdata);
-   if (rc)
-   return rc;
-
privdata->cl_data = devm_kzalloc(>dev, sizeof(struct
amdtp_cl_data), GFP_KERNEL);
if (!privdata->cl_data)
return -ENOMEM;

-   rc = devm_add_action_or_reset(>dev, amd_mp2_pci_remove, privdata);
+   mp2_select_ops(privdata);
+
+   rc = amd_sfh_hid_client_init(privdata);

This commit landed in 5.15-rc4:

$ git describe --contains 88a04049c08cd62e698bc1b1af2d09574b9e0aee
v5.15-rc4~40^2

It seems it was backported to 5.14.10:

https://lwn.net/Articles/872195/

Impish should have gotten 5.14.10 during its regular upstream -stable
patches:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1950388

The commit is listed there, but when I search the Impish git tree, it is
missing?

I think what has happened is the two commits have the same name, and
Kamal must have gotten confused and thought it was a duplicate, and
dropped it.

Here's what we are going to do.

I will build you a test kernel based on 5.13.0-23-generic, that includes
Basavaraj Natikar's fix, and I will provide instructions on how to
install it. You can test it to make sure it fixes the issue, and if it
does, I will submit the patch for SRU to the 5.13 kernel.

I will write back once the test kernel has finished building, probably
tomorrow.

Thanks,
Matthew

Hi @dgatwood, @Jazz. I took a look at the USB patches that landed
between 5.11.0-41-generic and 5.11.0-44-generic in the Focal HWE tree:

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/mfJCw5XmBv/

One commit which I thought was interesting was:

commit 5caa90d5fedfcdf57a42c272896cfd0ef6b5c667
commit-upstream: 5255660b208aebfdb71d574f3952cf48392f4306
Author: Jonathan Bell
Date:   Fri Oct 8 12:25:44 2021 +0300
Subject: xhci: add quirk for host controllers that don't update endpoint DCS
Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/5255660b208aebfdb71d574f3952cf48392f4306

I took a look at the Amazon B08PF8XR73 card you have:

https://www.amazon.com/YEELIYA-PCI-7-Port-USB-C-USB/dp/B08PF8XR73

The page mentions "Advanced Dual Chip Uses Fresco Logic 1100 +VL820 dual
chips".

The above commit is a quirk for VIA VL8xx chipsets, and looking at the
code:

if (pdev->vendor == PCI_VENDOR_ID_VIA && pdev->device == 0x3483) {
xhci->quirks |= XHCI_LPM_SUPPORT;
xhci->quirks |= XHCI_EP_CTX_BROKEN_DCS;
}

It was applied to PCI_VENDOR_ID_VIA && pdev->device == 0x3483. Looking
these up:

https://devicehunt.com/view/type/pci/vendor/1106/device/3483

We see that the VL820 is listed:

VX800/820-Series PCI-Express Root Port 1

So this new piece of code would apply to your PCIe card.

There was a similar bug filed a few days ago:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1956542

Looking at the lsusb output, they are also using a VIA Labs VL813 Hub,
and USB 3 no longer works.

Bus 003 Device 056: ID 2109:2813 VIA Labs, Inc. VL813 Hub

In this case though, the VL813 is under a different vendor and device
ID, and the code in that commit would not apply:

https://devicehunt.com/view/type/usb/vendor/2109/device/2813

Since its 0x2813 and not 0x3483.

Still, this is very interesting.

@Jazz, does your system have any "VIA Labs, Inc" USB host devices? Check
"lsusb -v".

Note that the commit was also present in 5.13.0-23-generic on Impish,
but is not in 5.13.0-22-generic.

@dgatwood, could you please collect "lsusb -v" as well, and maybe try
5.11.0-41-generic?

Thanks,
Matthew

Also,

* Mainline kernels are not officially supported, they are only provided
for testing.

* Ubuntu 21.04 is soon about to reach end-of-life
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases).

So please try installing Ubuntu 21.10 instead
(https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop) and don't change the kernel. Then
tell us if the same bug still occurs.

It appears you've reported roughly the same issue in 7 different bugs

reporting the problem so there's a chance it is specific to your

Thank you for taking the time to study this bug report.

"Drag and drop" is indeed the way I usually sort out my bookmarks. I
know there is a "sort by name" option (I won't try it).

I'm very sorry but I won't use any apport command, for classic privacy
reasons. (But I can provide any logs, if it's "human-readable" and I can
sanitize it by myself)

2022-01-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Erik,

Please open the Extensions app and tell us what you have enabled. Please
also run:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again to ensure there are none locally installed.

If the problem still happens then please run:

  gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1951599] Re: gnome-shell logs errors when ejecting SD card

2022-01-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ubuntu-dock is problematic in that only Marco has commit access so
usually we're waiting for him on that. Otherwise if we distro-patch then
it's out of sync with git.

Also I feel like the above fix should have resolved other bugs in
Launchpad but can't find any linked.

[Bug 1956849] Re: Almost all USB ports suddenly stopped working; unbootable

2022-01-09 Thread Heitor Alves de Siqueira
@dgatwood would you be able to upload kernel logs and lsusb output from
the -44 kernel? From what you're describing it seems like a possible
issue with host controllers, but it's hard to tell without looking at
what is going in the kernel.

You can use `apport-collect 1956849` to upload relevant data directly to
this LP bug.

[Bug 1956890] [NEW] Please remove vast from Ubuntu

2022-01-09 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

vast can no longer be built from source in Debian and Ubuntu. The
attached Debian bug indicates that this may not be fixed in the near
future. Therefore, please remove vast from Ubuntu.

This is also blocking the completion of the fmtlib transition since vast
is showing an autopkgtest regression with the new fmtlib.

[Bug 1956879] Re: Desktop icons disappeared

2022-01-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report! I still think there is a problem.

Admittedly I'm not able to reproduce the behavior you describe. And my
attempt to open "Extensions" segfaults:

$ gnome-extensions-app
free(): double free detected in tcache 2
Aborted (core dumped)

(which is probably another bug)

But this series of commands indicates a problem:

$ gnome-extensions disable d...@rastersoft.com
$ gnome-extensions info d...@rastersoft.com | grep State
  State: ERROR

I uploaded version 34-1 as late as last Friday, but version 35 has
already been released upstream. With a local test of version 35 I can't
reproduce "my" way to trigger a problem. So I just uploaded 35-1 to
Debian, and it will hopefully make it to Ubuntu tomorrow.

Please test version 35-1 when it lands and let us know if all is fine.

[Bug 1878946] Re: Cannot install proprietary NVIDIA driver

2022-01-09 Thread Giancarlo
I am just having the same problem with U20.04. Just installed fresh today Jan
9, 2022. My computer is freezing only when I open Libreoffice Calc with
fullscreen 2560x1440 (lower res works fine), so I wanted to try a new install
with nothing in it, just as-is from the download. In this new install my kernel
is 5.11-0-44 generic. My other install of 20.04 the kernel is 5.4 (I tried to
do an update to 5.11 since I read that it fixes a really nasty bug but it would
not upgrade.) I would not downgrade kernel 5.11 since this is happening to me
with the kernel that came with the original U20.04, my freeze may be a
different issue.
In today's install when I go to SW & Updates -- Additional Drivers and click on
the Using Nvidia driver, after a few minutes I get a window with Error while
applying changes and "pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package:
installed nvidia-340 package post-installation script subprocess returned error
exit status 10 (313)"
