[Bug 1961365] Re: 2.54.3+18.04.2ubuntu0.1 update on bionic breaks fish shell

2022-02-20 Thread Xavier Delaruelle
There was an attempt to mark this bug as duplicate of #1957948.

The fix provided in 2.54.3+18.04.2ubuntu0.1 should fix #1957948 but not
this bug as the --path option of set command is not supported on fish
2.7 (version shipped in ubuntu 18.04).

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1957948
2.54.2+21.10 introduces a call in vendor_conf.d/snapd.fish to fish function
`fish_add_path` which requires fish 3.2 or later (Impish only packages fish 3.1)

[Bug 1961418] Re: snap failed to run with '/usr/bin/snap wait system seed.loaded'

2022-02-20 Thread Alberto Mardegan
Hi Gene, thanks for reporting this!

I have no idea what the problem might be, but please try this:

1) Since you are already root, try not using sudo (though I'm almost sure that
this is not causing any issues)
2) Please post the output of these commands (after re-trying to enable
livepatch):

systemctl status snapd
systemctl status snapd.socket
journalctl -b -u snapd

[Bug 1961121] Re: Not able to enter s2idle state on AMD platforms

2022-02-20 Thread Alex Hung
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

AMD Systems don't enter PC6 at runtime and cause failures to enter
  s2idle.

Currently the fix is from kernel driver rather than MP2 firmware, which
disable interrupts from kernel driver to fix MP2 firmware blocking
  CPUOFF.

  [Fix]

+ The fixes involve 1) cancelling delayed work when entering s0ix and re-
+ scheduling it when resuming from s0ix, and 2) clearing interrupts during
+ the driver initialization and sensor command operations.
+
  [Test]

+ This is requested by AMD and was tested on AMD CRB.
+
  [Where problems could occur]
+
+ Risk is low to medium. Some code flow changes are guarded by reasonable
+ conditions, but the fixes introduced additional suspend and resume
+ operations.
+
+ Having said that, clearing interrupts before driver initialization and
+ cancelling work before entering sleeping states are standard approaches
+ are usually safe.

[Bug 1961524] Re: Sudden crash with screen frozen after re-login

2022-02-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like Xwayland crashed;

Feb 20 15:53:02 ZenBook-UX363JA org.gnome.Shell.desktop[1838]: Error getting
buffer
Feb 20 15:53:02 ZenBook-UX363JA org.gnome.Shell.desktop[1838]: (EE) failed to
write to XWayland fd: Broken pipe

But to be sure...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I don't think the points I raised are upstream ones and I wouldn't take
them upstream myself. I think it's good (in the long term) and
appropriate that PipeWire upstream is a daemon, just not appropriate in
Ubuntu 22.04 since we've decided to stick with PulseAudio. Hence the
configuration changes I mention would be Ubuntu-specific.

But if we can just not install pipewire-media-session by default then
that would be better than any config changes.

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-20 Thread Erich Eickmeyer 
Daniel, I disagree.

PipeWire is meant to be a *drop-in replacement* for PulseAudio.
Applications that recognize PulseAudio are supposed to use it instead if
it's available in lieu of PulseAudio.

Both options need to be available, otherwise the entire goal of
PipeWire's audio capabilities of unifying Linux audio under one audio
server are lost.

While this might still be a bug, which is the entire reason I didn't
follow through with closing it, I still believe this may be a packaging
issue more than anything.

The points you bring up are probably upstream ones, so I'd take it up
there. https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/

[Bug 1960336] Re: No login screen when fprintd crashes

2022-02-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for that:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/3e63925e-90a3-11ec-9112-fa163e983629
but it doesn't seem to be retraceable. Just bad luck. Maybe try
crashing/reporting it again.

When we do eventually get a stack trace I think most likely the fprintd
crash will move to bug 1960387, leaving this bug about gdm3 error
handling only.

[Bug 1961541] Re: ubuntu daily isos fail to isoboot

2022-02-20 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

> I wrote one of the daily isos to a USB stick, and it booted normally.
Using a Ventoy boot USB stick, which uses a different grub iso booting
method, fails.

That implies to me the bug exists in `ventoy` which is not a supported Ubuntu
tool.

Supported methods are described in documentation as follows
- https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu#1-overview
- https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-macos#1-overview
- https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#1-overview
where you'll note no mention is made of `ventoy`.

The error you mention "Unable to find a medium containing a live file
system" implies either an invalid ISO (did you validate it) OR bad write
to media (thus it couldn't be found).

You do mention 2022-02-02 works; which made me think of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1960226 so maybe
you've just found this older bug (which has since been fixed) and
mention 2022-02-06 daily fails (which was impacted by the aforementioned
bug),

so could this bug be a re-filing of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1960226 which has
been fixed.

I'll mark this bug incomplete; due to
(a) use of unsupported `ventoy`; bug is likely with outdated ventoy that can't
deal with newer ISOs
(b) possible duplicate of provided bug report (which has been fixed),
but I believe the issue is the ventoy you're using is OUTDATED & needs updating
to reflect changes in the aforementioned bug report due to changes; that is not
a Ubuntu issue, with bug needing to be raised against ventoy.

If you believe I'm incorrect, please leave a comment explaining why, and
the bug report can be returned to "New".

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is definitely a bug and one we need to solve before the masses
start using jammy. So just closing it wouldn't be helpful.

I'm reminded a little of bug 1897965. Maybe we need either:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pipewire/+bug/1897965/comments/16

or to modify pipewire-media-session.service with something like:

  /usr/bin/pipewire-media-session -d bluez5,alsa-seq,alsa-pcm,alsa-acp

That way PulseAudio is always the only one trying to control the
hardware.

Alternatively; don't install pipewire-media-session by default. So long
as it's not needed for Wayland screencasting/recording like at least
some of Pipewire is :S

[Bug 1961542] [NEW] libsmartcols: Revert back to previous behaviour of non-shell parsable column output (lsblk -P)

2022-02-20 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

util-linux 2.37 in Jammy has introduced some new behaviour for lsblk and
similar tools which depend on libsmartcols. This switched the -P /
--pairs parameter from printing column names as normal, to changing the
names to shell compatible names instead.

e.g. lsblk -P now outputs LOG_SEC instead of LOG-SEC.

The change broke some core tooling which rely on on the output of lsblk
-P, most notably, curtin and MAAS, but I am sure there will be more
applications affected.

Affected MAAS users will see the following traceback when attempting to
deploy 22.04:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/curtin/curtin/block/__init__.py", line 785, in get_blockdev_sector_size
logical = info[parent]['LOG-SEC']
KeyError: 'LOG-SEC'
'LOG-SEC'
curtin: Installation failed with exception: Unexpected error while running

This is documented in MAAS bug 1956613.

MAAS decided to fix it by changing from -P to -J, in the following commit:
https://git.launchpad.net/maas/commit/?id=e2c01963430e6837198a54bc1eadf3efc9fdd9a2

Curtin now checks for MAJ_MIN, and changes it back to MAJ:MIN in:
https://github.com/canonical/curtin/commit/ce811db127fe1ce46498b83615f8faed8c7dfeb6

The issue is that these commits are not tagged to any MAAS release, and
users would be forced to upgrade MAAS to the latest stable release when
available if they want to deploy 22.04.

There are many users out there that don't want to upgrade MAAS, so
returning to the previous column output is the most desirable solution.

[Testcase]

On a Jammy install, simply run lsblk with either -P or --pairs:

$ sudo lsblk -P
...
NAME="sda" MAJ_MIN="8:0" RM="0" SIZE="465.8G" RO="0" TYPE="disk" MOUNTPOINTS=""
...

Affected installs will see MAJ_MIN.

There is a test package available in the following ppa:

https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf326660-test

If you install it, you will see MAJ:MIN, just like it is on Impish and
previous.

[Where problems could occur]

We are changing the column output for -P and --pairs for the following
applications:

* lsblk
* findmnt
* lsipc

If any application has been modified to depend on the new column output,
it will break. I don't have any examples of something that will break,
because MAAS and curtin were modified such that they would be compatible
with both column name formats.

It should be noted that the manpage documents that lsblk output can
change at any time:

> The default output, as well as the default output from options like --fs and
> --topology, is subject to change.
> So whenever possible, you should avoid using default outputs in your scripts.
> Always explicitly define expected columns by using --output columns-list and
> --list in environments where a stable output is required.

If a regression should occur, we will need to fix up these affected
packages also.

[Other info]

The change came about when a user asked upstream to make -P / --pairs
shell parsable, in Issue 1201 upstream:

https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/issues/1201

Karel Zak obliged, and it was implemented in the following commit:

commit 58b510e5805d8350c31bfb81a47bcd38ea9fdd7e
From: Karel Zak
Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2020 12:14:10 +0100
Subject: libsmartcols: sanitize variable names on export output
Link:
https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/commit/58b510e5805d8350c31bfb81a47bcd38ea9fdd7e

I wrote to Karel Zak with the regressions introduced by changing the
format, and asked to revert back, and instead implement the shell
parsable logic as a new parameter.

This happened in upstream issue 1594:

https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/issues/1594

Karel Zak was happy to oblige again, and we now have the following
commits:

338ad4a93 findmnt: commit missing flag
0f843ab64 lsblk: update --help output for -y
eba05f308 lsipc: add -y,--shell
152c17aa4 findmnt: add -y,--shell
9c7e81ff1 lslogins: add -y,--shell
25fb0638a lsblk: add -y/--shell
39679ea0c lsfd: use new libsmartcols functions
6fd0e3590 column: use new libsmartcols functions
0b3c2e80d include/carefulputc: remove unused function
3b5db50f7 libsmartcols: change "export" behavior, add "shellvar" flag

While we got the intended behaviour, these commits won't land until
util-linux 2.38, which will be after Jammy releases, and the other issue
is that this changes a significant amount of code, like nearly 1k lines,
and is spread over 10+ commits.

I wrote to ubuntu-devel asking for advice, on either 1) not changing
anything 2) backporting the 10+ new commits, or 3) simply reverting the
commit which changed the behaviour.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2022-February/041870.html

ubuntu-devel had strong support for option (3).

Hence, we will revert the below commit to ensure Jammy can be deployed on all
existing MAAS releases.
58b510e580 libsmartcols: sanitize variable names on export output

[Bug 1952538] Re: Report a problem in Ubuntu page: Step 1: "nameofprogram" unclear

2022-02-20 Thread Zian
Thanks for tweaking the language to reflect how ubuntu-bug works today.

I think "program" is a better word because my hunch is that if you asked
a random set of people who use PCs what a "program" is and then repeated
the experiment with the word "package", you'll get more puzzled looks
the second time around.

The Table of Contents at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs uses
the two words almost interchangeably. The following phrases are used:
- desktop application (once)
- package (thrice)
- program (twice)

How difficult would it be for the Ubuntu bug reporter (client-side
application) to do the steps in section 6 of the ReportingBugs wiki
page? If the computer can figure out the right package name to use from
the user input whether the user types the package name or program name,
then there will be one less obstacle to learning about a problem.

Can the Apport backend do the tedious work in section 6 of the wiki
article? If possible, then the enhancement would fit right in with their
goal of making "the user side ... be extremely simple and as unannoying
as possible."

The documentation already tells people that when all else fails, they
should just type "ubuntu-bug". Seems that if we could include only that
phrase in the documentation instead of both "ubuntu-bug packagename" and
"ubuntu-bug", then it'd be an improvement for normal users.

[Bug 1961541] [NEW] ubuntu daily isos fail to isoboot

2022-02-20 Thread John Little
Public bug reported:

From about 2022-02-06, doing a grub isoboot into a jammy-desktop-amd64
iso loops outputting

stdin: Not a typewriter

This is repeated about every 2 seconds, for about 2 minutes, then there
is a prompt

Unable to find a medium containing a live file system

and a busybox prompt. The casper log shows

Begin: Running /scripts/casper-premount ... done.
done.
stdin: Not a typewriter

I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Lubuntu daily isos. These all could
isoboot up to 2022-02-02 at least.

I wrote one of the daily isos to a USB stick, and it booted normally.
Using a Ventoy boot USB stick, which uses a different grub iso booting
method, fails.

Using a grub isoboot is much faster than writing an iso to a USB stick
then booting from that stick, and makes daily testing feasible.

(Any data "gathered" by ubuntu-bug is from the Kubuntu 21.10 system I'm
using to file this report, and are not relevant.)

[Bug 1961540] [NEW] tracker-miner-fs-3 massive CPU usage and system slowdown

2022-02-20 Thread ExploreWiki
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
- 21.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

tracker-miner-fs:
  Installed: 3.1.3-1
  Candidate: 3.1.3-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.1.3-1 500
500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu impish/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen
- Ubuntu indexes the files in the background at a very low priority.

4) What happened instead
- Ubuntu grinds to a halt and the CPU usage is off the chart right after I boot
up when search indexing is enabled. When checking the "System Monitor" it is
always "tracker-miner-fs-3" consuming all of the resources.

I have been having problems with tracker-miner since 20.04 LTS and so I
upgraded to 21.10 and I'm still having problems with search indexing
bringing my system to its knees and making Ubuntu clunky and unusable.

I have attached a photo of my system specifications.

The fix for me was to completely disable search indexing: Settings >
Search > Turn Off Search Indexing. After doing this, my system is
running perfectly again with low CPU usage!

[Bug 1878601] Re: Merge nfs-utils from Debian experimental for 22.04 - version in Ubuntu is *very* old

2022-02-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package nfs-utils - 1:2.6.1-1~exp1ubuntu1

---
nfs-utils (1:2.6.1-1~exp1ubuntu1) jammy; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian experimental (LP: #1878601, #1812280). Remaining
changes:
- d/nfs-common.postinst: always start nfs-utils.service, so the restart in
the #DEBHELPER# section can do its job if needed
  * Dropped:
- Add remove-gssproxy.patch: Drop gssproxy as it does not exist in Ubuntu
[Ubuntu has it, but not in main]
- debian/nfs-common.default: remove NEED_STATD and related comment.
[/etc/default/nfs-* files are no longer used]
- debian/nfs-common.default: always start idmapd automatically; drop the
  configuration option.
[/etc/default/nfs-* files are no longer used]
- Add 90-gss-free-lucid-sec-context.patch: adjust for changes to the ctx
  argument of the serialize_krb5_ctx() function.
[Was only needed when libgssglue-dev was used for build, which it
  isn't since nfs-utils 1:1.2.8-7]
- Fixing nfs-mountd dependency on rpcbind (race condition) by adding
"rpcbind.socket" to "nfs-mountd.service" as a dependency to avoid race
  conditions:
  - Add systemd-Fix-nfs-mountd-dependency-on-rpcbind.patch
  [Fixed upstream]
- truncate_gid*.patch: Backports from upstream to prevent truncating UIDs
and GIDs over 65536 on certain architectures
  [Fixed upstream]
- d/p/fix-start-ordering-1.patch, d/p/fix-start-ordering-2.patch, d/p/fix-
  start-ordering-3.patch, d/nfs-kernel-server.install: Fix systemd service
  start ordering
[Fixed upstream. Patch 3 we don't need anymore because now the pkg
  is built with --with-systemd]
- Depend on network-online.target when starting services.
  - d/p/lp1918141-use-network-online-target-01.patch: Declare a
Wants=network-online.target on all NFS server services.
  - d/p/lp1918141-use-network-online-target-02.patch: Declare a
After=network-online.target on all NFS server services. Thanks to
Niklas Edmundsson for helping with the reproducer.
[Fixed upstream]
  * Added:
- d/control: don't provide libnfsidmap2 in libnfsidmap1
- d/NEWS: explain some of the major changes in 2.6.x
- Don't install the regex module, as it's built by
src:libnfsidmap-regex which is in Universe (MIR: #1960824)
  + d/control: don't conflict/break/etc with libnfsidmap-regex
  + d/libnfsidmap1.install: don't install regex.so
+ d/not-installed: mark files we knowingly don't include in the
packaging
+ d/p/remove-regex-from-docs.patch: remove the regex section from
the idmapd.conf(5) manpage, as we are not building that plugin in
this package
- Update README files:
+ d/README.Ubuntu: explains some of the packaging decisions
+ d/README.Debian.nfsv4: removed as the content is out of date
  + d/nfs-common.docs: install README.Ubuntu instead of
README.Debian.nfsv4
  + d/libnfsidmap1.docs: install README.Ubuntu

[Bug 1961079] Re: [Ubuntu 22.04] Allow ESP installation on md-disks in subiquity

2022-02-20 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
You are correct that subiquity does not allow you to put the ESP on a
metadata 1.2 MD RAID device. That's because, to the best of my
knowledge, almost all firmware does not know about MD RAID formats and
so would be unable to boot the system.

The question thus becomes, how can the installer know that putting the
ESP on a metadata 1.2 MD RAID is going to work? I presume we can
identify your firmware by looking at sysfs somehow or other?

I still wouldn't be amazingly happy about doing this because it is a
general goal of Ubuntu's installers that you can transfer a disk between
systems and still have it boot, but that's probably not so important for
the server use case.

[Bug 1961349] Re: uneven tooltips in the application menu

2022-02-20 Thread KGIII
FWIW, it happens at various resolutions. I test in different
resolutions, depending on the day and the box.

(And you're the one who suggested I report it! *grins*)

As mentioned, it's remarkably trivial.
