working and the system monitor applet turns all white, and stops working

i get this as well, however i noticed that pressing any key - i choose a
non-action key, shift - it'll continue to progress incrementally with the
keystrokes up to a certain point where it continues on its own. it's something
like 20 keystrokes before this happens.

...says something about the 'i810 driver' handling monitor off. That
could be my problem, but I can't see anything in xorg.conf about the
i810 driver and don't know where to look.
