I changed /etc/init/mountall.conf to print out the current time before it
execs mountall:

The particular flash drive I'm using is a Sandisk Cruzer Micro with U3 Smart

This recently happened for me as well.
It's actually not russian (chyrillic) characters, but cherokee
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_syllabary)

Forgot to mention that this might be caused by Firefox Sync, at least
that's what some other people suggest and what seems to be true for me.
I sync between a 10.10 and a 10.04 machine and for whatever reason
experience this issue on the 10.04 box.

Backuppc no compression when change topdir
It's not actually a hardcoded path but a bug in one of the perl scripts.
The attached Fedora bug has a patch for this bug.
There is also a bugreport at Debian, but they resolved it by telling the the
reporter to create a symlink... which is not the right way to do this imho.
This seems to be caused by debian/patches/95_git_name_escaping.patch, which was
added to fix #499690 and #585128.
Unfortunately it breaks the language selection dialog.
