I may have found a dirty workaround. Try launching compiz with loose binding
disabled...It seems to solve the issue...
However, I've noticed some slownesses in compiz effects (expose, cube rotate
for example) with loose binding disabled...
(latest nvidia driver 180.29).

I use Indirect rendering...but that was not the cause.
I have found something else. I used nvidia hack with nvidia-settings to improve
2D performance (from nvnews forum). I remove this, and now, there's no more
redraw problem.
The hack was to put in ~/.gnomerc the line : nvidia-settings -a

I can confirm what Tom says. The problem still occurs with latest 180.22
drivers from Nvidia though it seems that it appears only after a few

Eventually, I've found that it was PowerPlay and not ACPI that was causing this
issuePowerPlay is used by ATI card to reduce consumption of graphic
cardsand with open source drivers, it's not implemented yet...so I've
installed proprietary drivers and now, the fan is running at normal

Just tried to add mem=4G iommu=off to kernel boot parameters.
Open /etc/default/grub and change the line :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
by

And then in a terminal, type :
sudo update-grub
There should be no kernel panic anymore

hm_shurt I used mem=4G iommu=off kernel parameters instead and now I've only
have 3Gb recognized (instead of 4Gb) but most important, everything works like
a charm ! No more kernel panic. Network Manager works great under Gnome, but I
had to install wicd under KDE in order to connect...Thanks

Actually...driver installation is OK. Network-Manager and Wicd works

Using Palimpsest (from Karmic) has fixed this issue as you can
disconnect AND power down any usb devices with it with just one click ;)
(You can even access S.M.A.R.T attributes from your external usb hard
drives). Haven't try sdparm command though...

Well, what if I want to use my modem ? It was working on Jaunty, so this is a
regression...and the above fix is just a workaround...
I know this is a proprietary driver, so we can't blame ubuntu dev...Anyway,

I don't think this is related to some radeon stuff since I've got the
same issue with an integrated intel card (when KMS is enabled, I can't
resume from suspendand when KMS is enabled, I can't go back from
xset dpms force off (command to switch off the screen)).

In Jaunty, even when PulseAudio is started in daemon mode, when I restart
the computer with mpd music player playing some music, it does not resume
after reboot...
