I am sure this is not a proper way to fix it but I don't know enough
about gedit to trace this all the way. From what I can tell though the
error spawns in gedit-local-document-saver.c and it doesn't occur in vi:
if (lsaver-priv-doc_mtime 0

I will not upgrade from Ubuntu 6.0.6 only to test whether a bug that has
not been looked at for a year was accidentially fixed or not.

It should be possible to create a package for ordinary users, if there
is a patched Kernel.
The steps are:
1. Download firmware. I don't know the legal situation.
wget ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44501-45000/sp44916.exe
2. cabextract 44916.exe
3. Dialog that asks which firmware to use
The cause (for me) of these problems in Lucid was due to cryptsetup not
removing NL/LF characters in the password file. Temporary fix is
obviously entering the password in a file without such characters.
