Public bug reported: Using ubuntu 10.10, intel i7 quad core, Radeon HD 3450. Xorg freezes pretty regularly. Keyboard and mouse completely stop responding. The screen gets corrupted with weird color patterns (I'll attach a screenshot). Xorg uses 100% CPU. Only a kill -9 will kill the process.

ATI officially dropped support for a whole boatload of chipsets with the latest release. You are probably no longer using the proprietary driver because your card is not supported. The problem is, the latest X.org is not supportd by the old driver. Try: glxinfo |grep 'direct rendering'
