[Bug 1975365] [NEW] installer crash when creating partition manually (jammy)
Public bug reported: Well, the installer just crashed on manual disk setup, after setting the entire hard disk to "physical volume for encryption" and clicking in there to actually configure the thing. Maybe it crashed because the disk contained a LVM before which I dd'd away (100M/count=1), since the installer does not let me remove LVMs in the first place. Maybe I'm doing it wrong and setting up an encrypted LVM configuration is actually much easier, who knows...it's been exactly ten years with this installation of Ubuntu, und I thought a fresh (cubic customized) install on a new machine would be a breeze. [Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)
As there is no option to "remove" a hard disk drive in dolphin or the usual USB notifier, I unmounted all partitions and sent the device to sleep (gnome-disks), which causes a spin-down of the drive itself. Then one can remove the disk in a relatively safe manner. The message did not appear again after the smartmontools command above, and it also did not appear after a reboot. So I reckon restarting smartmoontools via a user-friendly button is enough to get rid of the annoyance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1634990 Title: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/smartmontools/+bug/1634990/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)
Hi, thanks for the answer and the insights of how the SMART subsystem works. Both config files (/etc/default/smartmontools, /etc/smartd.conf) are untouched. The only thing that (actively) may do something SMART-related is tlp 0.8. I ran the service smartmontools restart command and we'll see if this fixes the error. If it does, I suggest adding a button to the error message that does this in a more convenient way. And no, I haven't restarted since the problem occurred, I guess it will fix it as well. But if I want a system that needs a reboot to fix basically half of the problems imaginable, I will choose Windows. According to whatpulse, my uptime record for this laptop is 91 days and my average uptime is 14 days, which includes multi-reboots on certain dates because of growing problems with the recent kernels (wrong display resolution, no WiFi, USB dead, etc). I expect minor problems such as SMART warnings to be fixable without reboot or relogin.
[Bug 1634990] [NEW] Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)
Public bug reported: A removed hard disk (from the Ultrabay of my Thinkpad) is still being looked for by some SMART notifier, which throws a warning each day that "The hard disk health status has changed. This could mean that hard drive failure is imminent. It is always a good idea to have up to date backups." When clicking the details, this is displayed: ### This message was generated by the smartd daemon running on: host name: DNS domain: The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], unable to open device Device info: SanDisk SD6SB2M128G1022I, S/N:123..., WWN:456..., FW:X210400, 128 GB For details see host's SYSLOG. You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation. The original message about this issue was sent at Sun Oct 16 18:59:02 2016 CEST Another message will be sent in 24 hours if the problem persists. ### And, of course, as the disk is entirely missing as it is now located two meters away, it will not respond to any smartd daemon stuff and therefore this naggy window will pop up again in 24h. So some 10 minutes after the last action, the screen would lock as usual, presenting the blueish unlock prompt (simple locker). This time, however, when I returned, a gray lock screen with Debian logo was presented. I was able to unlock it, and after a fraction of a second, the screen was locked again. This can be repeated for arbitrary amounts of logins, it will never unlock completely. Ctrl+Alt+L for manual locking was also not possible. One can see the desktop running behind normally for this short amount of time, but of course take no actions. From a different user and graphical session, I tried disabling the lock at all, but this doesn't seem to work for gnome-screensaver at all. Or maybe not for the current session, but that's not helpful for this acute problem as well. I was able to find and kill a suspicious gnome-screensaver from a shell session, after that the main session is completely unlocked. Manually locking now brings the old simple locker back up. Everything seems fine. Questions: 1) Where the heck did gnome-screensaver on a KDE system come from? I never configured that. And after killing it once, it's gone. 2) Even if it got installed and configured by one of the latest updates (I don't see that from the packages shown above), gnome-screensaver has a re-lock loop on KDE. See #29. If that is the default value in fresh installs, the bug is fixed. If not, it is still present. [Bug 930807] Re: [gm45] Intel GPU X4500 hung, screen corruption without total freeze
apport information ** Description changed: Hi, just experienced the second (partial) crash of my graphics subsystem, this time I'm able to report it instead of rebooting the machine, as the remaining functionality is much greater this time... Yesterday it happened within rssowl, scrolling down to an embedded gif animation; this time it was just random surfing the web with firefox, reading news at a hardware magazine. Screen goes blank for a moment, afterwards characters go invisible or form blocks and special chars, title bars of windows go black and buttons become unreadable (however, stay functional). Within an already opened vmware machine, the mouse pointer is just a rectangular mess of colorful pixels and some milder screen corruption happens. Restarting applications does not fully recover the state (but it cures over time). Some applications are affected much stronger than others, rekonq (why do I have to report bugs with rekonq?!) offers now full functionality, while content in firefox was nearly unreadable. [Bug 976325] Re: USB 3.0 performance drop between 3.2.0-21-generic and 3.2.0-22-generic
Unfortunately not...the stick is already shipped, and as my laptop got some replacement parts from IBM/Lenovo service (including a new HDD), right now I'm running a newly installed 12.04. I might try a SATA-USB converter with a 3,5 HDD, but that would differ significantly from my previous setup. [Bug 976325] Re: USB 3.0 performance drop between 3.2.0-21-generic and 3.2.0-22-generic
Well, right now I'm bisecting that thing...haven't found a bad one yet, only positive results. Current position is between sha1 cba898a327da48eb1f7dd6b86ff174e76dd883a4 and the Ubuntu-3.2.0-22.35 release, which means 16 revisions left. As each build takes about an hour plus rebooting, testing and fixing occasional errors, I don't know if I can finish in time. My only USB 3.0 stick is already sold and has to be shipped tomorrow. However, the only clearly USB related commit left (sha1 c56daacff345b5d1f3b4fa7f0a65a886517c1cc3) would show up in the next kernel build. I have no idea why faulty commit +1 is reported, but I guess someone will figure that outI thought it was the USB one that had bad influence. [Bug 1006072] Re: [gm45] Intel GPU X4500 hung, fuzzy screen or total lock of KDE session

[Bug 1007464] Re: pm-suspend does not lock screen after wakeup
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Something running in background has crashed without further notice, so that I cannot shutdown, suspend, lock, etc. via task bar menu (and also not use my custom hotkeys). As the pm-utils package offers the same functionality, I used pm-suspend to send the machine to sleep mode. Waking it up again, the desktop appears without lock, so no password is required to access it. The crashed daemon (or whatever it is) may be the same as in bug #992175 and #964542. At the moment, screen brightness setting is possible via hardware keys in single steps, while multiple steps were applied when the shutdown/suspend functions from start menu were still working. Also, as mentioned, my custom hotkeys like Win+C for kcalc are not working at all. Maybe some dbus related stuff again...
