[Bug 113463] kde-guidance-powermanager has annoying on-screen display

2007-05-08 Thread Chase
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance-powermanager

On various events (plugging the computer in, unplugging it, etc.), the
powermanager displays a notification that tells me about the event. For
me, the events are quite obvious and accompanied by other things
happening, like the screen dimming or brightening, plus the plug being
out of my computer. The notification is just a nuisance, and I'd like
the option to disable it. I've already adjusted the notify() function to
just return instead of notify, but this doesn't help others similarly
annoyed.

Tested on a macbook and an IBM Thinkpad Z61t, but it should definitely
be reproducible across all systems.

** Affects: kde-guidance (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 95277] Re: load dvb-usb-dib0700 driver for asus my cinema U3000 mini

2007-08-10 Thread Chase
Hi,

I'm really lost but that's ok i'll get there.

I've installed v4l on my ubuntu 7.10.

I've put the dib0700-01.fw in the firmware folder.

I don't know how to run the patch nor do i know how to change the PID's
which i think might be because i don't actually have a file called
dib0700_devices.c to patch, could this be right?

If i su and then modprobe dvb-usb-dib0700 i get:
[ 2857.548000] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700

Anyone know what part i'm doing wrong or how to do the part i don't know
how to do?

If you help me you'll probably be helping a whole lot of other people
too as i can't find anything solid on this anywhere on google.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Chase.

[Bug 432310] Re: apt fails if dbus is not running

2009-11-21 Thread Chase
This is still a bug. As Juanca noted, using -S does not solve the issue.
I was trying to build the debian-installer, and the make always failed
because of this exact issue. When I changed the -S to -f, apt-get
started working again. I have reopened the bug as 'confirmed'.

[Bug 361489] Re: Xorg crash when usb mouse is connected before gdm login

2009-11-08 Thread Chase
I've added a patch to the karmic xorg-server package that should help.
Without having a good reproduction technique, I can't say definitively
that this will fix the issue, but I believe it will.

You can find the patched package in my ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~chasedouglas/+archive/ppa.

[Bug 481391] [NEW] [needs-packaging] rinputd

2009-11-12 Thread Chase
Public bug reported:

The Remote Input server allows clients to send input events, such as
mouse movements or keyboard presses, over a secure, authenticated
communication channel. Remote devices, be they separate computers or
mobile devices, can provide mouse, keyboard, multi-touch, switches and
other input to the Remote Input server, and the server will create
virtual keyboards and mice for each connection.

My patch to fix the issue has been accepted upstream in the xserver git

The patch is the same as what I have in my own ppa package.

[Bug 414490] Re: [ubuntu karmic] mythtv regression - no audio in frontend

2009-11-01 Thread Chase
I have a stereo set of speakers hooked to my sound card via an analog
connection. I lost sound in mythfrontend when I upgraded from jaunty to
karmic. To get sound back, I had to change my sound output device from
ALSA:default to ALSA:surround51. My guess is that the default alsa
device just won't work under karmic, and surround51 sends the output to
the analog ports.

[Bug 1895002] [NEW] zram-config attempts to allocate more devices than permitted

2020-09-09 Thread Chase
Public bug reported:

Using zram-config on a system with a sufficiently high count of CPUs
causes the systemd service to fail. The reason being that there is a cap
on the amount of swap devices that can be allocated. Zram is properly
allocated, but the systemd service fails since some devices cannot be
allocated. Below is the output of the service.

The fix should be simple enough (but I'm not proficient with git patches
yet). The script at /usr/bin/init-zram-swapping currently takes the
number of CPUs and creates this many devices to enable parallelization.
The simplest fix would be to set a max number of devices.

An alternative would be to use a smaller number of devices, but enable
multiple threads on each device. My understanding is that this is now
possible, but I'm not sure which method is more performant.

Thanks Oibaf, you're correct. It's too bad this 8 year bug hasn't been
fixed, but hopefully we can move it along :)

[Bug 1078165] Re: zram-config fails to start/install on a system with more then 30 processors

2020-09-09 Thread Chase
It's worth noting the multiple streams Oibaf mentioned are currently the
default. On my system, there are the max number of swap devices each
with 32 streams. I propose we only have one device and use the default
behavior of max_comp_streams = number of CPUs.

It's my first time creating an apt patch, hopefully I've done it
correctly.

I can test this tonight on my Ubuntu server. Otherwise, I can test now
on a Fedora workstation. Do you have any tips for benchmarking swap?

[Bug 1078165] Re: zram-config fails to start/install on a system with more then 30 processors

2020-09-15 Thread Chase
This was tested in a VM running Ubuntu Server 20.04 with fewer than 29
cores dedicated to it, so I didn't run into the bug. Unfortunately the
production server wasn't available for testing (especially since each
benchmark took over an hour!).

Yes, custom zram-config means the sram-config but with the patch
applied.

Be sure to click the last link, as it will show you all three tests
side-by-side.

Overall, I would say that the custom zram-config doesn't much matter to
the performance.

I can confirm this same problem with my Nokia 770. Using cp, gnomevfs-
copy, nautilus or konqueror to copy all lock up around 71 MB, regardless
if I'm copying over the files one at a time or en masse to a 2 gb card.
At that point, the card becomes corrupt and I have to reformat.

[Bug 222937] Re: gnome terminal scrollback buffer changed unexpectedly

2008-04-27 Thread Chase Phillips
Hi Pavel. That doesn't solve my issue, but thank you for trying anyway.

The history output I pasted in the description was:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ history|tail
494 vi somefile
495 mprodb
496 finger
497 ssh hostomitted
498 ssh hostomitted
499 ssh -vvv hostomitted
500 ssh hostomitted
501 man geteuid
502 man -k uid
503 history|tail
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

You say 'history command simply show ~/.bash_history file', but that's
not exactly right in my understanding. The shell reads the contents of
~/.bash_history at login into the shell's command history. With each
new command a user runs, the shell appends that command to the shell's
command history. Running the history shell built-in will cause the
shell to output that command history list. Please correct me if I am
mistaken.

In my report above, the history output correctly showed what my actual
command history was in the remote system's currently executing shell.
It's gnome-terminal which displayed the wrong buffer after 'man' exited.
In my case it showed the contents of another terminal's buffer!

I notice you changed this bug's status to incomplete. What data do you
need from me to consider this a bug worth investigating? I don't have
steps to reproduce the bug.. it's very strange that it happens
occasionally, but even stranger that it happens at all. I will keep
working on a way to reproduce it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my report.

[Bug 55739] Re: No more mouse events after using rdesktop

2008-06-02 Thread Chase Venters
I have the same problem. I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 3.5.9. I also
had this behavior with older versions of Kubuntu. I do not use rdesktop
on my laptop, so I believe that it is unrelated.

When I lose mouse control, I can move the mouse around but can't click
anything. Sometimes, I can right click and bring up a context menu which
rescues the system. Sometimes it seems that the mouse can only affect
some particular window in the system. Sometimes, doing a few VT-switches
will recover the pointer, but not always.

[Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2009-01-05 Thread Chase Venters
If it helps, here is the behavior I am seeing:

1. Problem is sporadic. Sometimes it happens frequently (and is
extremely annoying), other times it happens rarely.

2. When it happens, it appears that some X window (I say some to mean
any as far as I can tell) that has just interacted with the mouse (and
perhaps performed some kind of a grab) doesn't release the grab. In
other words, if I right-click on some other screen location that is
above a different widget, and the last thing to have grabbed the mouse
has a context menu, I'll get the context menu for that last item instead
of the mouse events being passed to the item I'm trying to click.

3. Sometimes, furiously left and right clicking, Alt+Tabbing, etc.
appears to clear the error. Other times, I have to hunt down the widget
that has the cursor and click it with alternating buttons to try and
reset the mouse grab state.

It's been years since I've done anything with Xlib, but if I had the
time to try and find this bug, I'd start looking for reasons why random
grabs aren't being released.

[Bug 471579] [NEW] display properties creates unusable xorg.conf

2009-11-02 Thread Martin Chase
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Having just upgraded to 9.10 successfully on my laptop, I plugged in an
external monitor, opened up the gnome-display-properties (belonging to
gnome-control-center 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1) , and de-selected the mirror
screens checkbox. It offered by default that the external monitor
should have 1680x1050, with the laptop screen at 1024x768, but that it
needed to resize the virtual desktop before the settings would take
effect. I said okay.

On logging out, the laptop screen went to flickering without end, as in
a respawning X server, while the external stayed blank. I rebooted,
external monitor still connected, and the flickering display started
immediately after decrypting my drive, before X was even thinking of
starting. This new flickering prevented the startup process from going
forward, and persisted on my next reboot without the external monitor
connect. I restarted in recovery mode, and copied the old xorg.conf
into place to be able to file this report, but I haven't rebooted again
to see if the initial framebuffer death is still there. If so, I
imagine pulling the splash out of the boot options should be enough to
continue to use my computer.

[Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
In Unity a design decision has been made that three and four finger
gestures are reserved for the shell. For example, any time you put three
touches down on a multitouch trackpad you can start draging the window
around (assuming it's not full screen). The only way to implement this
behavior is to mask out the three-touch-tap behavior that X synaptics
supports.

I'm sorry to say that they only reason three touch tapping works in
unity 2D is because it doesn't yet implement the window moving gesture.

There's no reason this can't be made configurable. I can envision an
option turns off specific gestures in Unity. If you disable the window
move gesture you'll get three touch tap to paste functionality back. If
someone in the community wants to offer a patch to do this we would be
happy to review it.

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
Hi Ian,

I understand the sentiment, but such a change would cause untold number
of complaints from users who are used to two-tap being right click :).
It would be a huge behavior change, so I don't think we would do it.

BTW, I think you may be able to change the mapping of number of touches
to actions by fiddling with the xinput props for the trackpad device.

[Bug 754000] Re: Running Unity disables Xorg's 3-finger click support (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
Daniel,

Sorry for mixing up the clicking vs tapping aspect of this bug. You are
right that they are different. I'm not sure yet what the best answer is
for how to handle three touch clicking when three touch anything is
grabbed by Unity.

On your merge request, I simply haven't had time to do any of the things
you requested, and I'm not sure I will anytime soon :(. The best thing I
can offer is to have you try to replay the example recording I attached
in the merge request that shows how there are issues when using my
trackpad. I know you've had issues trying to replay it, but maybe you'll
be able to figure it out.

[Bug 754000] Re: Running Unity disables Xorg's 3-finger click support (middle click)

2011-09-27 Thread Chase Douglas
Ian,

You're right that taking three tap for paste away is a use case change,
but it's not as big of a change as moving one response from one action
to a different action.

Another thing to note is that Ubuntu tries to cater to people who come
from all environments. The X copy/paste functionality is sort of an
oddity in desktop systems. It ends up confusing people who aren't used
to it. An argument could be made that although it can be used
effectively, making it less easy to use would not be very harmful to the
majority of users. All these aspects have been weighed against the
ability to add meaningful gesture use cases, and the design team at
Canonical believes this is the best approach at this time.

[Bug 832624] Re: cursor jumping to screen border

2011-09-29 Thread Chase Douglas
Samuel,

The evdev swap axes property has been deprecated since Natty. We are
aware of issues with swap axes and the new masked valuators, but we
don't have plans to resolve them.

There is a much more robust solution in the form of the Input
Transformation Matrix property. It allows for any 2D affine
transformation to be applied to the input, including rotation and
inversion. Please see:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/InputCoordinateTransformation

I am guessing that if you switch to using the transformation property
this issue will go away, so I'm going to mark this as Won't Fix. If
you still have issues when the swap axes properties are not enabled,
please reopen the bug.

Thanks!

[Bug 832624] Re: cursor jumping to screen border

2011-09-29 Thread Chase Douglas
Jussi,

I don't think unsetting the valuator is necessary. The mask is zero'd on
every evdev sync event, and only new values are set. I think this is
really due to the axis swapping property being set. See my next comment
:).

[Bug 830640] Re: eog crashed with SIGSEGV in geis_dispatch_events()

2011-09-22 Thread Chase Douglas
Unfortunately, ppas don't have pkg-create-dbgsym installed, so dbgsym
packages aren't created. I have created a workaround for libgrip so that
it does not strip binaries created from a daily build. The new package
in the daily ppa should have debug symbols now.

[Bug 830640] Re: eog crashed with SIGSEGV in geis_dispatch_events()

2011-09-22 Thread Chase Douglas
A new version of libgrip has been built in the daily ppa. I believe this
version should fix the latest backtrace from comment #20. It is a more
complete fix for the original issue. Please test again. Note that the
daily build libgrip package should now have debug symbols in it.

Thanks!

[Bug 848799] Re: Multi-touch rotates the wrong way

2011-09-23 Thread Chase Douglas
This is fairly obvious when you have an image that doesn't look similar
depending on which way you rotate it :). That was why I never really saw
this issue.

This does not occur in evince, so it's likely not an issue with libgrip.
Thus, I'm returning the bug to eog. A small patch to change rotation
direction should fix this up.

[Bug 932947] Re: [FFe] ClickPad support

2012-02-22 Thread Chase Douglas
** Description changed:

ClickPad devices are those with the buttons integrated into the touch
surface. Examples include most newer Synaptics touchpads and all Apple
multitouch touchpads. These devices currently have poor support for
click and drag. When the user presses with one finger and then tries to
- drag the cursor with a second finger, the cursor stops either sits there
- or begins scrolling. Also, the current behavior makes no distinction
- between left and right click button areas.
+ drag the cursor with a second finger, the cursor either sits there or
+ scroll events begin to be sent depending on the trackpad preferences.
+ Also, the current behavior makes no distinction between left and right
+ click button areas.

The proposed feature enables click and drag with two fingers.
Optionally, a right button area may be enabled which allows for presses
in the area to be sent as right button events instead of left button
  events.

The current patches may be found at:
  http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~cndougla/xf86-input-
synaptics/log/?h=clickpad-v2. The changes include everything newer than
  the master tag.

The support impacts the normal flow of events for clickpad devices. To
- be sure of minimal breakage, a call-for-testing has been sent. I will
- update this bug with more information when the CFT closes.

[Bug 939125] [NEW] Clicking link in thunderbird opens browser, but focus remains on thunderbird

but instead thunderbird is silently closed in the background.

Secondarily, while in the bad state alt+tab does not work. The switcher
graphic shows, and the dock comes out to wiggle the application being
switched to, but the application isn't raised. I don't know if the two
issues are related, but I suspect they are.

[Bug 934770] Re: [MASTER] Trackpad behavior change causes tap-and-drag to lock

2012-02-23 Thread Chase Douglas
Since the feature freeze exception was granted for adding clickpad
support, I decided to revert the change in behavior. ClickPad devices
now have a better way of performing a press-and-drag, so the need for
locked drags has been alleviated.

[Bug 938737] Re: Setting AreaBottomEdge on xorg.conf causes touchpad to stop working

2012-02-23 Thread Chase Douglas
Pedro,

I just uploaded a new version of xserver-xorg-input-synaptics with
clickpad support. Please try it out without setting the Synaptics Area
property. It should make press-and-drag work without having to mask out
a bottom area of the trackpad.

[Bug 938737] Re: Setting AreaBottomEdge on xorg.conf causes touchpad to stop working

2012-02-24 Thread Chase Douglas
Two finger click interferes with clickpad press-and-drag. We had to
disable it for the time being. I hope that we can bring it back once
some finer heuristics have been developed.

We will probably enable right click by adding a right button area in the
lower right corner of trackpads. When you press in that area it will
cause the right button to be pressed instead of the left button.

I haven't seen any bug reports about the two-touch functionality being
disabled. Please open a new report so we can track any solutions for it,
including enabling the right button area.

Thanks!
