I am attaching the output from saving the file as a word document with
openoffice.org 1:3.1.0-3ubuntu2. As best as I can tell it works fine
under Karmic, so I am not sure why it wouldn't work just as well under
the ppa version, which has the same code.

This is most likely due to there not being a difference in that your
system is probably killing OOo so it effectively is a crash scenario.

I see what the problem is now and I think it is a bug in ooo-build. It
works with official OOo 3.1.0 and dev300 m49 but not with ooo-build.
