Paul, This issue also appears to be fixed in OOo 3.1.0 which is in Karmic and the ppa, does the ppa version work for you as well? You don't have to upgrade to it if you don't want to, but it seems to resolve this and many other problems. The url for the ppa is in this launchpad bug report in a previous comment.
