i have the same problem when i try to maximize or to move the firefox windows
on the desktop the result is a black screen and a system restart.I can't find a
bug report nowhere but just a second before the restart i have read on the
monitor something like CPU frequency scaling unsupported.
I used this app (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/gsynaptics) to avoid the
problem..
After having manually set SHMConfig true in my xorg.conf, gsynaptics
started and allowed me modifying tapping interval for my Dell Vostro 1500..
I think this is the best workaround we can have..

I received today a report from a friend to whom I gave an Ubuntu 8.04.1
CD to try to install on his wifes Acer Aspire 1353 LC that at some point
during starup of the LiveCD the screen went black. Unfortunatly that's

I use gutsy and everyday update my packages. A few days ago the bug
disappeared. Today i.e. after my update of yesterday (about 22:00 UTC on
October 16) I get that error again.
Trying to find a workaround I played with things I find mentioned in
ld.so manpage. This had an impact:
I used strace to take a look at what is different in the two cases (i.e.
with ld.so.nohwcap and without).
When java is started then obviously a libc is loaded as for almost any
executable program. Depending on the existance of ld.so.nohwcap either
/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 is loaded or

I used to play warzone (from getdeb) on feisty. I updated the system to
help ubuntu finish gusty. however, I am now having trouble playing
warzone.
I start the game, choose single player. When I choose the saved game,
the game crashes, and

work (stays at 128) an on the other issuing 'hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' results in
setting the value to 254.

It happens when doing ssh. I have ssh-agent running, which should supply
the key to ssh. Some times setting up an ssh connection hangs. And the
only solution to make ssh work again is to remove the environement
I see that /usr/bin/lsb_release is a python script, and the deprecation
warning started here today after the update of python from 2.5.4 to
2.6.1, so it might be related to that.

I can change the brightness using this command:
sudo bash -c 'echo 128 /sys/class/backlight/kb3886-bl/brightness'
i.e. by writing values in the range 0..255 into
/sys/class/backlight/kb3886-bl/brightness
but changing it with xbacklight, e.g. with
sudo xbacklight -set 50

On 2008-11-07 I had removed packagekit and from then on never saw the
error message again even though I had several occasions where an update
in synaptic resulted in update packages becoming available. A few days
ago I installed packagekit again and today when performing a reload in

I found another document which is rendered fine by evince or xpdf but is
wrong in openoffice... totally wrong, letters on the second page are
