[Bug 1917949] [NEW] Networkmanager takes a long time to connect to wifi after wake from suspend

2021-03-05 Thread Corbin
Public bug reported:

Networkmanager takes 10-15 seconds to connect to wifi after wake, as
opposed to the normal 3-5 seconds.

This bug has already been fixed by the upstream maintainers of
networkmanager- I hope to see the fix included in 21.04 before it's
release. The fix can be found here

[Bug 1915881] [NEW] Networkmanager takes 3x longer to connect to wifi on wake on 20.10 compared to 20.04

2021-02-16 Thread Corbin
Public bug reported:

Networkmanager upstream has already created a patch to fix this bug,
which they backported to nm 1.26, which Groovy uses.

The upstream fix can be found here-

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/commit/5454681ab76ee02cfa85d65e29005b974efb3c52

This, as far as I can tell, meets the guidelines for ubuntu's SRU
policy.

In addition, given that Hirsute Hippo will also be using nm 1.26, this
fix will have a broader impact than just groovy.

I am not certain the kernel is the cause, I just noticed the bug
manifested when I updated. I will upload apport logs. I don't actually
believe it is a kernel bug, because PA works properly on the login
screen and only fails after login.

[Bug 1900349] [NEW] pulseaudio fails on login, cannot be restarted (Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15IIL05)

2020-10-18 Thread Corbin
Public bug reported:

While pusleaudio works properly on gdm before logging in, once I login,
it fails. I was able to successfully restart pulseaudio with pulseaudio
-k on my first attempt, and one other time, but I have been unable to
reproduce this. It (pulseaudio -k )usually does nothing. As such, adding
"pulseaudio -k" to run on on login as a workaround does not work. This
started happening after updating from kernel 5.4.0-48 to 5.4.0-52.
Rolling back to 48 makes the issue go away.

It actually didn't work for me, but that is likely because i did not
load linux-modules-extra. THe download link for the deb keeps failing,
but I'll try again tomorrow. So please disregard until then.

Well, previously on mint as well as the Ubuntu liveimage, fans would run
at medium to high speed constantly despite running in gpu rendering mode
and no visible cpu strain. The air coming out of the vents would be cold
as well.

When i booted 5.6.0, the fans ran fast for a minute or so after boot,
then everything returned to normal.

Like I said, it would merit a separate report.

Also the bug in question doesn't actually exist

** Description changed:

On Ubuntu 20.04, running kernel 5.4.0-40-generic, the internal speakers,
headphone jack, and mic do not work at all. No audio devices appear in
the Sound settings or in pavucontrol. By appending options snd_hda_intel
  dmic_detect=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, I can get audio
working, but the microphone (unsuprisingly) does not work. Appending
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1 to alsa_base.conf as the same
effect as dmic_detect=0. Attempts to fix with option snd_hda_intel
device=generic or deveice=auto have had no effect. This bug does NOT
manifest on 5.4.0-26-generic, the kernel version featured on the 20.04
live media. After installation, and updating to 5.4.0-40-generic, the
bug manifests on the next boot.

Note that the audio hardware seems to work properly w/o workaround on a
small (< 5%) percentage of boots, but I have been unable to reproduce
this. With the workaround enabled, inxi -A gives

[Bug 1886341] IwConfig.txt

2020-07-10 Thread Corbin
apport information

** Attachment added: "IwConfig.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886341/+attachment/5391444/+files/IwConfig.txt

** Description changed:

On Ubuntu 20.04, running kernel 5.4.0-40-generic, the internal speakers,
headphone jack, and mic do not work at all. No audio devices appear in
the Sound settings or in pavucontrol. By appending options snd_hda_intel
  dmic_detect=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, I can get audio
working, but the microphone (unsuprisingly) does not work. Appending
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1 to alsa_base.conf as the same
effect as dmic_detect=0. Attempts to fix with option snd_hda_intel
device=generic or deveice=auto have had no effect. This bug does NOT
manifest on 5.4.0-26-generic, the kernel version featured on the 20.04
live media. After installation, and updating to 5.4.0-40-generic, the
bug manifests on the next boot.

Note that the audio hardware seems to work properly w/o workaround on a
small (< 5%) percentage of boots, but I have been unable to reproduce
this. With the workaround enabled, inxi -A gives

2020-07-10 Thread Corbin
The 5.6-0 OEM was the earliest version of the kernel I could get working
as well.

Interestingly enough, this kernel seems to exhibit a seperate bug, but I
will file that one seperatly.

Here are the apport logs.

[Bug 1886341] Re: Kernel Regression between 5.4.0-26 and 5.4.0-40 causes laptop internal audio devices to fail to load w/o unacceptable workaround

2020-07-08 Thread Corbin
apport information

** Description changed:

On Ubuntu 20.04, running kernel 5.4.0-40-generic, the internal speakers,
headphone jack, and mic do not work at all. No audio devices appear in
the Sound settings or in pavucontrol. By appending options snd_hda_intel
  dmic_detect=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, I can get audio
working, but the microphone (unsuprisingly) does not work. Appending
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1 to alsa_base.conf as the same
effect as dmic_detect=0. Attempts to fix with option snd_hda_intel
device=generic or deveice=auto have had no effect. This bug does NOT
manifest on 5.4.0-26-generic, the kernel version featured on the 20.04
live media. After installation, and updating to 5.4.0-40-generic, the
bug manifests on the next boot.

Note that the audio hardware seems to work properly w/o workaround on a
small (< 5%) percentage of boots, but I have been unable to reproduce
this. With the workaround enabled, inxi -A gives

headphone jack, and mic do not work at all. No audio devices appear in
the Sound settings or in pavucontrol. By appending options snd_hda_intel
  dmic_detect=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, I can get audio
working, but the microphone (unsuprisingly) does not work. Appending
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1 to alsa_base.conf as the same
effect as dmic_detect=0. Attempts to fix with option snd_hda_intel
device=generic or deveice=auto have had no effect. This bug does NOT

+ manifest on 5.4.0-26-generic, the kernel version featured on the 20.04
live media. After installation, and updating to 5.4.0-40-generic, the
bug manifests on the next boot.

Note that the audio hardware seems to work properly w/o workaround on a
small (< 5%) percentage of boots, but I have been unable to reproduce
this. With the workaround enabled, inxi -A gives

[Bug 1827822] Re: kernel null pointer dereference

2019-10-05 Thread Ken Corbin
A month or so after reporting this, amid a frustrating series of
unpredictable lockups, I figured out how to run memtest which indicated
I had a bad memory card. Since replacing it, I have had no further
problems.

[Bug 1827822] Re: kernel null pointer dereference

2019-05-17 Thread Ken Corbin
No I can not reproduce this. Which is not that surprising, deep kernel
bugs are unlikely to be correlated with anything the user is doing at
the UI level. System is still crashing sporadically, they do not occur
on any of my other systems, nor did they happen on this system before a
certain date, which inclines me to claim that they were not happening
with older kernels.

It did lock up again this morning. Unfortunately the last 5 minutes of
the syslog file were corrupted and contained no useful information, so I
could not tell you if it was the same problem or not.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2019-03-12 Thread Alex Corbin
Just made/realized I had a launchpad account for this. I love snapd but I'm
tired of seeing the ~/snap directory pop up so much that I added a line to my
bashrc to notify me if it shows up again. I'll likely be reinstalling snaps
once this gets fixed, but I do want to say one thing to the developers. when a
problem has 5 times as much "heat" as the next largest complaint, your userbase
probably cares a lot about it, and it comes off as pretty disrespectful for you
to just pass it off as an example of the Law of triviality. IMO, this should
have been done soon after this bug was posted, and symlinks of some kind for
each snaps download folders and such.
That being said, I have barely looked at the snap code at all, and would like
to ask the developers why just grepping for every @{HOME}/snap and replacing it
with @{HOME}/.snap wouldn't solve the problem? What containerization would be
broken if you found and changed every reference to the snap folder?

And I know that, but is this still not a bug?

Also, unity8-desktop-session-mir did not add Unity8 session to LightDM

Also, what something the above does not have is showing that unity8 does

Subject: [Bug 1206387] Re: openafs-modules-dkms 1.6.1-1+ubuntu0.2: module FTBFS
on 3.8.0

After this discussion (and some other customers/users requests on the
same bug), knowing that the 1.6.5 backport was not eligible for a SRU
(just like Steve pointed out) I started to cherry-pick code from openafs
1.6.5 to openafs 1.6.1, so the openafs dkms module was able to compile
on HWE kernels.

With that I could see that this approach would also not result in a
eligible RSU. There are too many changes from kernel 3.2 to kernel 3.11
and openafs has a huge amount of pre-defined code based on these changes
(Rightly pointed out by Anders).

After fixing some wrongly auto-generated includes, I could see that
there were 2 approaches for bringing 1.6.5 behavior to 1.6.1:

1) Remove STRUCT_TASK_STRUCT_HAS_CRED define. Autotools is correctly
checking for the existence of a credentials structure inside
task_struct (kernel). Since newer kernels (3.x) have this structure, the
code defines STRUCT_TASK_STRUCT_HAS_CRED variable and starts accessing
all credential variables directly from kernel defined structures
(includes). Removing this would make openafs behave like it used to in
the past (older kernels from 2.6.x) and would imply fixing all
current_task-cred structure (changing upstream code on that specific
version). Of course, after this, even more changes would be expected.

- not a good approach

2) Cherry-pick code from 1.6.5 to 1.6.1. There are 398 commits between
this two versions and, taking in consideration only dkms module, this
could be a reasonable direction. The problem is that since there are a
huge amount of changes in the kernel structures for process, sched,
security (between v3.2 and v3.11) the changes wouldn't be acceptable on
SRU.

Some of needed changes would be: dentry_open new prototype, kmap_atomic
new prototype, vmtruncated deprecated, task_struct cred session_keyring
location, new proc_create function on module, and so on...

- not a good approach also

Title:
  openafs-modules-dkms 1.6.1-1+ubuntu0.2: module FTBFS on 3.8.0

Status in “openafs” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “openafs” source package in Precise:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Since the backported Raring kernel 3.8 was released into Precise and is
installed by default, OpenAFS cannot be installed on Precise. The out-of-tree
OpenAFS kernel module needs to be upgraded to support kernel 3.8.

This happened before for the backported Quantal kernel 3.5 (bug
1015925), but this time so many patches are needed that it’s less
risky to take a new upstream stable release, which is already well-
tested, than to try to decide which patches to cherry-pick.

  [Test Case]
  apt-get install openafs-modules-dkms
(This should succeed on all supported Precise kernels, 3.2, 3.5, and 3.8.)

  [Regression Potential]
OpenAFS 1.6.5 has been well-tested in the OpenAFS PPA
https://launchpad.net/~openafs/+archive/stable,
which has many users at MIT. The 1.6.x series is focused on important bug
fixes
and new kernel support (with main development happening on the master branch
that will become 1.8.x, and Windows development happening on 1.7.x).

2014-03-12 Thread Jeremiah Corbin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 128 ***

Affects me as well.

I have been enabling the onscreen keyboard and then it lets me use the
physical keyboard normally. On next boot, the problem is back so I
disable the onscreen keyboard and I am then able to type the password
using the physical keyboard.

I will try the mouse right-click workaround next time.

[Bug 1196192] Re: Mainline kernel 3.9.8 not usable in raring

2013-06-30 Thread Richard Corbin
I apologize for adding a comment here (which is probably the wrong
place), but I havent a clue where to post this. I also have a problem
with kernel 3.9.8 that I never had with any previous kernel:

I have never had a problem before installing the latest general
release kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
until yesterday.

After I installed v3.9.8-saucy, the system could no longer read cpu
usage of my quad-core Intel q6600. Conky, top, mpstat -P ALL all
show ZERO CPU usage. Everything else is fine; it is just the reporting
that is busted.

When I go back to kernel v3.9.7 or forward to 3.10.0-rc7 all works
fine.

usually happen within an hour or two. About a month ago my friend and I
played for about eight hours straight and it didn't happen.

It's possible that this was fixed somehow. I definitely remember some
i915 updates since this GPU hang happened last.

[Bug 860191] Re: truncated icons/labels/cursor on dash

2011-12-05 Thread Corbin
Yesterday, I got tired of this bug, and decided to reset my profile to
try to get rid of it. I deleted (well, renamed, anyway) my ~/.config
directory, and logged out, then back in. Sure enough, I had a default
profile, with a nice, non-truncated dashboard. I was pleased. So, I
customized my profile back to how I like it, and checked the dashboard
again. It was messed up as before.

[Bug 852812] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78080003

2011-11-09 Thread Corbin
Good morning,
This bug does still exist. After about an hour of testing, my tester's
game-play was ended by a GUP hang (see attached terminal output).

Before this was reproduced, there was a similar problem, which may or
may not be related. Because I have no idea what happened, I'll talk
about it here. While the tester was playing, the X server crashed, and
the screen switched to a TTY-like session with kernel messages about the
error, and the kernel seems to have completely crashed. I believe that
the kernel crashed because the computer was taking no input. I couldn't
switch TTY Sessions or anything, I just had to do a hard reboot. Because
I had no X server, the only valuable output I could get was by taking
pictures of the screen with my cell phone. I uploaded the images to my
site here: http://jdgregson.com/temp/ubuntubug/

Hope this helps. I will post this same comment on the bug report on
freedesktop.org, just to keep everything in sync.

[Bug 852812] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78080003

2011-11-08 Thread Corbin
Hello,
I have just tested for a short while, and have not been able to reproduce it. I
will have somebody test it more tonight if I am able, and post back with the
results of that test/those tests. Last I heard from the report here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41099, they likely have not fixed
it in GM45, although I have not had any results lately, positive or negative,
as I have lost interest in the game and haven't been playing much. Since I am
the only person that this bug has reportedly affected, I don't believe that
this should continue to be tracked if even I am no longer affected. Again, I
will post back in the morning with the results of the tests I will conduct
tonight. Thank you for your help.

[Bug 864791] Re: After syncing iPod, description-less phantom operation keeps animating progress bar and prevents closing Banshee

2011-10-07 Thread Corbin
I just figured something out. After it syncs, if you try it sink
something that can't sync, and it has an error, the ghost task stops. I
was using my iPod Touch for my tests.

Steps to repeat:

Sync iPod.
After it is synchronized, there should be that silly ghost process.
Drag a video from your library onto the iPod in the left panel, to sick it.
(Banshee doesn't seem to be able to sync videos very well, so in my case any
old MPEG4 video works.)
The sync should fail with an error, and the ghost process disappears.

See my attached video for an example.

[Bug 864791] Re: After syncing iPod, description-less phantom operation keeps animating progress bar and prevents closing Banshee

2011-10-04 Thread Corbin
I have the same problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, and Banshee 2.0
(2.0.0). The first time you sink an iPod this doesn't occur, but every
time you sink the iPod after that it does. I have the problem with an
iPod Nano 5th gen. and an iPod Touch 2nd gen. The progress bar just goes
on forever, and if you click stop it says stopping... and still
continues forever.

Probably not. I did have it occur multiple different times, but I
couldn't see any relation between them, and never tried to reproduce it.
Unfortunately, I have since downgraded to Natty, so I cannot provide any

[Bug 858060] Re: indicator-daytime-service use a lot of cpu and ram

2011-09-26 Thread Corbin
I have the same problem, I think. I'll just be using my laptop, and
suddenly everything is slow, like I don't have a lot of memory. I check
my processes and see that indicator-daytime-service is using 20%-60% of
my CPU. Ending the process fixes it, and then the process just re-
spawns. After it re-spawns, it does not use any of my CPU at all, it
just sits there, invisibly... like it should.

I also upgraded to Oneiric from Natty. Currently I am using Beta 2.

I am willing to provide further assistance if needed.
