I just want to recall that in my case the freezing black screen no access to console bug at boot is not systematic but once in a while and that when it happens I just have to reboot again to go trough sometimes I have to retry twice. Monika, thanks for all this information ; in my case though I am also suffering frome the same black screen dead end at boot time there is something completely different : - the black screen appears each other few boots ; for example I may have 4 to 5 sessions with normal boot session then a failure. - moreover in case of normal boot in some cases when I run fgl_glxgears it is a prerfect rendering but most of the time I have a slight freezing effect ! I wish I could install Dapper version of fglx driver if possible to resume normal work but I do not know how to do that with an apt command. This bug is also related to the problem I have with GoogleEarth which gets stuck on splash screen when executed but fortunately here I keep control of my session. This is where I stand with the black screen (with no way to regain control other than pushing on RESET button on computer) at boot : (1) this is not systematic as I can for example have 5 to 6 normal boot session until I exprerience a failure. (2) when I have a normal session running I may have a prefect hardware rendering with my video card when executing : $ fgl_glxgears or I may observe some slight freezing effect in cube motion but not all the time during the same session. I wonder is it possible to install the last fglrx driver package from Dapper onto Ubuntu Edgy to check whether the black screen on boot can be fixed this way and if yes how to proceed from command line ? The fglrx driver bug may also be related to the Google Earth bug where in this case we get stuck on splash screen but this does not make the system crash. As a matter of fact adding the lines : Section Extensions Option Composite disable EndSection was not enough to get my hardware rendering on my Radeon X300 video card to work neatly as on Dapper ; I still experienced some slight freezing effects with for example screensaver applications. Same problem for me with AMD 64 and ATI Radeon X300 PCIE this while booting from HD ; 2 more comments : (1) funny that this seems to reapear not all the time but each other few reboot ; therefore might be related to a task activated each other few runs like a cron task !? (2) might be related to a bug report of mine (#67728) similar to this one as I got the same black screen when trying either : - to switch session, - or to reboot, - or to halt. In this latter case after selecting my choice from the KDE session manager It hanged the same way with a black screen with loss of full control ; apparently with new update (of fglrx ?) I have not experienced this present again ! [Bug 67122] New fstab configuration
Public bug reported: I was surprised to notice a new fstab configuration where typical unix mount point are replaced by UUID=funny_number ! I just want to recall that such a file is supposed to be editable by user and therefore actions of Guru to add more illisibility to configuration is not desired. For me this is exactly the same philosophy adopted when proposing GRUB as a replacement of LILO the latter one using typical unix mount points whereas GRUB is using things as (hd0) which for unix user has no meaning and consequently is confusing. All this does not contribute to make Linux comprehensive to potential users and this is a pity ! *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 64615 *** I think the main philosophy when migrating from one Distro (here dapper) to the next one (here Edgy) is to avoid at any rate to re-install and this is a difficult challenge especially when there are many changes, but for the user it saves a lot of trouble. [Bug 66965] I/o bug on reading hdc
Public bug reported: After successfully burning the iso image on CD very slow reading process of CD content with report of I/O errors on bloks (3 or 4 and all the time the same on retries) ; finally goes through to reach Gnome desktop but on install on HD stops with no error messages ! The same thing happened to me with the Knot 3 release.
