I'd be interested to see how you configure/boot qemu (the arguments
passed) to produce an NVMe device.
I've just uploaded patches which should enable correct installation onto
NVMe devices, but I haven't been able to verify that fully yet.
Can you try images from
my guess is that whilst previously neither gettext nor autopoint were
enabled for the package. But now gettext was, possibly generating this
unpleasant .mo side effect.

ubiquity-dm opens up a PAM session and specifically sets logind variables to
open a greeter session (seat0).
please check with loginctl that a correct logind session is opened for
ubiquity-dm.
if there is logind session opened, further debugging will be required to figure
why /dev/dri is not
