Using a CanoScan LiDE 20, I have a similar problem. Often immediately before or
immediately after scanning (via scanimage, not Xsane), the slider freezes

white Ubuntu logo appears on screen (XSplash? USplash? I don't know), it

Well, my system doesn't (always) freeze upon browsing Facebook, but it's true
that memory allocation shoots through the roof, and CPU usage goes up to 90%.
This happens also on Firefox 3.5.
The strange thing is that neither memory allocation nor CPU usage are lowered
even after closing Facebook
Also, this apparently isn't a Gecko issue, as it doesn't affect
Epiphany. In fact, after having visited and left Facebook on Fx, then
visited it again on Epiphany, Firefox is at 75% CPU while Epiphany
isonly at 12%.

Actually, for me it only detects UTF-8 and Latin-15. I even tried to
open a KOI8-U text file on gedit, and it was rendered as Latin-15.
Perhaps it depends on the locale?

Well, I, for one, couldn't reproduce it with the pictures screensaver.
I could and in fact did just trigger it with GLSlideshow. And I didn't have to
wait a minute - mouse movement is ignored from the very moment the screensaver
starts.

Grub hangs forever on halt command

I have a PDF copy of a certain textbook, about 800 pages long.
For some reason, the odd-numbered pages on said book appear completely blank on
Evince.
The file itself is not damaged, Adobe Reader will show all pages correctly, and
even print the book to a PS file. Said file
