First time the UI just locked up, but I could still switch to another

[Bug 1898369] [NEW] studio-controls autoconnects the wrong ports

2020-10-03 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

I happen to have three USB devices that are (also) audio input devices
which studio-controls bridges as C920,0,0-in, MICROPHONE,0,0-in and
MS2109,0,0-in, only one of which is actually a microphone (guess which
one). If I try to set up an input bridge for MICROPHONE,0,0-in, studio-
controls will always connect it to MS2109,0,0-in. A bridge for
C920,0,0-in is connected correctly.

If I try to configure a bridge for MS2109,0,0-in, it is displayed as a
bridge for MICROPHONE0,0-in in auto connect port dropdown on the Pulse
Bridging tab, but still connected to MS2019,0,0-in. I do not know as how
many bugs I should count this.

It is wrong in autojackrc:

pulse-in = pulse_in MIC C920 HDMI
pulse-out = pulse_out
pj-in-con = system:capture_1 MS2109,0,0-in:capture_1 C920,0,0-in:capture_1
MS2109,0,0-in:capture_1

If I edit it manully in autojackrc, studio-controls will set up the
correct connections, but will display an empty text in the auto connect
port dropdown.

[Bug 1898352] Re: audacity kills rear microphone input on Starship/Matisse HD as soon as it starts

2020-10-03 Thread Florian Hars
Another observation: The microphone input works perfectly fine with
jackd, too. But if I start pulseaudio, then start and immediately quit
audacity, then stop pulseaudio again and try to start jackd from
qjackctl, qjackctl hangs and I have to force quit it.

I also attach the log output from audacity, the lines around the
"AlsaOpen ... failed" my be relevant.

[Bug 1898345] Re: Kernel logs general protection fault when applying hdajackretask settings on ALC1220

2020-10-03 Thread Florian Hars
The errors.log written by hdajackretask is empty, and I accidentally
booted into the wrong kernel when submitting the original report, this
actually also happens with

Another interesting thind is that after a while some programs become
unkillable, like sudo, or some daemons:

2020-06-22 Thread Florian Hars
After running ereything with AMD_DEBUG=nongg, the "Waiting for fences"

be part of the gereral cluster of failures that seem to plague the linux

[Bug 1883577] Re: column layout in "sensors" is broken for voltages of 1000.00 mV

2020-06-19 Thread Florian Hars
I am running the "sensors" command by typing "sensors" into a terminal
window and hitting Enter.

It is a bug because the column layout is broken for some voltage values
which happen to be relatively common on my system, see the "in6" value:

ct6798-isa-0290
Adapter: ISA adapter
in0: 944.00 mV (min = +0.00 V, max = +1.74 V)
in1: 1.01 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM
in2: 3.34 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM
in3: 3.31 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM
in4: 1.02 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM
in5: 816.00 mV (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM
in6: 1000.00 mV (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.00 V) ALARM

[Bug 1883493] Re: amdgpu hangs from time to time with *ERROR* Waiting for fences timed out!

2020-06-17 Thread Florian Hars
What happens is that I am doing something and suddenly nothing moves
except the mouse pointer and video calls become audio calls which I can
only leave by switching the computer off. I tend to have obs-studio
25.0.3+dfsg1-2 running. for the last two days I had it running with
AMD_DEBUG=nongg and it didn't freeze in that time, which is moderate
evidence (from the behaviour in the preceding days I'd have expected
more than 0.5 freezes in that time) for the suspicion that it may indeed
be related to the other issue and the upstream bug linked from there.

The sensors program tries to print all values neatly in columns, but
there are some voltage values which it displays as 1000.00 mV, which is
one digit too long.

[Bug 1882249] [NEW] Qt3DQuickExtras headers are never packaged

2020-06-05 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

All the headers for the libraries in the Qt3DQuick packages
(called libqt53dquick5) are in the qt3d5-dev package, except

This makes it for example impossible to compile the code from

compilation terminated.

The file is missing in xenial, eoan, and focal, and present in qt3d5-dev

[Bug 1878404] [NEW] double free on certain types of STLink-board communication failures

2020-05-13 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

This bug happens when trying to flash tock (https://www.tockos.org/) on
a Nucleo STM32F446RE board which may bring up the MCU in a state where
the on-board STLink can't talk to it.

To reproduce, you need the tock source (commit
2d1bbdd7f3000f71e57ef5abc1d3846f67807f8a shows the problem) and the
build environment (
https://github.com/tock/tock/blob/master/doc/Getting_Started.md ), the
named nucleo board, and a mini-USB cable.

Then do

Connect the board via USB
cd /boards/nucleo_f446re
make flash

Unplug and reconnect the board

make flash

Some more details (and how to get your nucleo board in a usable state
again) in
https://github.com/tock/tock/issues/1843#issuecomment-627924162

2020-05-08 Thread Florian Hars
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1877525 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1877525

Public bug reported:

If I check for updates, the system tells me that everything is up to
date, but there is a new version 20.04 LTS available. If I then choose
to update, it warns me not to continue:

"Welcome to the Ubuntu 'Focal Fossa' development release

This release is still in development. Do not install it on production
machines."

That seems weird, given that is was supposedly released in April.

[Bug 1497727] [NEW] evince-thumbnailer DOSes rsyslogd

2015-09-20 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

I just noticed that I had evince-thumbnailer, systemd-journald, and at
least two instances of rsyslogd each using about a full core, and
writing about 50GB worth of the two lines:

Sep 20 12:07:41 dirichlet gnome-session[1581]: page: Warning: font `cmr10' not
found, trying metric files instead
Sep 20 12:07:41 dirichlet gnome-session[1581]: page: Error:
/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmr10.tfm: File corrupted, or
not a TFM file

into /var/log/syslog.

The last few lines leading up to that were:

[Bug 1325899] [NEW] evince is excruciatingly slow on some documents

2014-06-03 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Evince is excruciatingly slow when displaying the book available for download
at http://www.safetty.net/publications/pttes
Scrolling can take several seconds and will often just display empty pages.
(And it is even worse with the 2009 version of the book you can still find on
several places on the internet), while xpdf has no problems at all with
instantly switching to the next page.

[Bug 1314551] Re: 1002:130f [GIgabyte G1.Sniper A88X-CF] Font corruption

2014-05-01 Thread Florian Hars
Installing fglrx results in an unbootable system, even rebooting into
failsafeX mode hangs completly after configuring the network. Luckily
there has been a kernel update since the beta, so I could use the old
grub entry to boot into failsafe mode and puge fglrx from there.

[Bug 1315006] [NEW] Installing fglrx makes the system unbootable, even in failsafeX

2014-05-01 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

I installed fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle, ran sudo amdconfig --initial and
rebooted, and the machine hung. Rebooting into failsafeX mode behaved
the same. Luckily there had been a kernel update since the beta, so I
could boot into failsafeX mode using the grub entry for the previous
kernel and purge fglrx from there. (failsafeX didn't really work either,
but it gave me a rootshell.)

I'll attach whatever I found in the syslog for a hanging boot attempt.

[Bug 1315149] [NEW] kicad is mostly unusable out of the box, help doesn't work, footprints are missing

2014-05-01 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

I installed kicad and the documentation and started it, then I selected
Help-Getting Started in KiCad and was greeted with a dialog box:

Help file Getting_Started_in_KiCad.pdf could not be found

OK, so then Help-Contents. That starts gimp. What the ???.

So I get Getting_Started_in_KiCad.pdf from the project website and
start with the tutorial.

First problems when editing the schematic: By default, labels are
displayed in black on black

Once you get to the Run CvPcb part, you get the expected FIle not
found dialog, and then another dialog with

Some files could not be found!

sockets.mod
connect.mod
discret.mod
pin_array.mod
divers.mod
smd_capacitors.mod
smd_resistors.mod
smd_crystaloscillator.mod
smd_dil.mod
smd_transistors.mod
libcms.mod
display.mod
led.mod
dip_sockets.mod
pga_sockets.mod
valves.mod

and if you then try to follow along with the tutorial, you can select
exactly zero possible footprints for all the components. That is

[Bug 1310564] [NEW] pdftops can't handle mixed portrait/landscape documents

2014-04-21 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

I am trying to convert (parts of) a PDF document containing mixed
portrait and landscape pages to ps with fixed page sizes (so I can feed
it to psbook ... | psnup -2 ...), but pdftops can't handle that:

1. wget
http://www.st.com/web/en/resource/technical/document/datasheet/DM00102166.pdf
2. evince DM00102166.pdf

Note that pages 44ff contain tables in landscape mode

3. pdftops -paper A4 DM00102166.pdf
4. evince DM00102166.ps

Note that pages 44ff are now empty, with:

[Bug 43246] Re: Invalid argument error with epson perfection 1200

2014-04-14 Thread Florian Hars
This can still happen in Trusty with xsane 0.998-5ubuntu1. I somehow
ended up in a situation where scanimage worked, xsane worked if started
from the command line, but failed with an invalid argument if started as
a gimp plugin. The reason was probably that it was always trying to
acquire an image with the size 0*885*8 (0 B) (or something similar
with the first dimension 0) and there was no way to make it try to get a
non-zero sized image. After removing ~/.sane things started to work
again, and I can no longer reproduce which sequence of steps resulted in
the problem.

So there is still a problem where xsane gets thorougly confused by the
contents of the ~/.sane directory.

[Bug 1283736] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT

2014-03-30 Thread Florian Hars
This happens when booting then 14.04 final beta, so there is currently
no 3D acceleration out of the box on (at least some) AMD APUs. It
happend to me with an E1-2500 with an integrated Radeon HD 8240. Unity
is currently unusable without the proprietary drivers (not that that
would be a big loss, but unity is unfortunately the first thing a user
sees in ubuntu).

[Bug 1157591] [NEW] adding a new account almost always fails silently

2013-03-20 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Adding the first account worked flawlessly, but since then evolution
will just walk me through the new account wizard, congratulate me that I
configured an account and that I should click Apply to activate it,
and if I click Apply close the wizard, forget all the account
information and do nothing.

The only example was a gmail imap accoun which I managed to add at the
sixth or seventh try. I can't remember that I had done anything
different on that try than before.

[Bug 1155493] Re: apport redirects to Error: Lost something?

2013-03-15 Thread Florian Hars
Just now I got another variant of this, the apport retracing service sent me a
mail telling me that a bug I filed last month
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1133314 is a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1090668 and asking me to review that and add
any further informaton there, but that bug is again Lost in cyberspace. The
page for my bug does also say This bug is a duplicate of: and then nothing
but icons to edit or delete the invisible duplicate link. Only after scrolling
to the bottom of the page does one see a warning Remember, this bug report is
a duplicate of a private bug. Comment here only if you think the duplicate
status is wrong. How should I remember if I have never been told, and how
should I comment on the duplicate status if I can't see what it is supposedly a
duplicate of?

It might indeed be useful to solve this in a slightly less confusing
way.

[Bug 294139] Re: update-manager fail release upgrade if using apt-cacher

2012-09-28 Thread Florian Hars
The reason seems to be that apt-cacher has a regexp of index files
that it revalidates to recognize updates, and the default regexp does
not match meta-release-development. If you add that, it detects the
new release.

There may be another problem: if the quantal.tar.gz changes during the
developent cycle, apt-cacher will not notice the change, as it assumes
the tar.gz files are versioned packages that are uniquely identified by
their name. That case may be solved if the regexp is changed to also
match ^[a-z]+\.tar\.gz (i.e. tars without any version number). Does that
file change during it's lifetime?

[Bug 1051877] Re: invalid cast followed by double free

2012-09-17 Thread Florian Hars
I can reliably reproduce the behaviour (the steps are sufficient, but
not all may be necessary):

1. Grab a screenshot
2. Crop to a small part of the image
3. File-Save as... and save to a png with default settings
4. Ctrl-Z do undo crop
5. Crop to a different part of the image
6. File-Save as... and save to a png with default settings

The second file will be saved, then gimp crashes.

I attach a gdb backtrace with debug symbols.

[Bug 898986] Re: CMS files not installed for Samsung

2012-02-17 Thread Florian Hars
I think we have months ago established that the missing files are a red
herring and the real problem is that foo2qpdl-wrapper calls ghostscript
in a way that makes ghostscript go belly up (Job 41 in the log file
provided in comment 14).

2012-02-17 Thread Florian Hars
As the Job 42 in the logfile attached to comment 14 and the logfile in
comment 15 show, there is another bug in the splix driver for this
printer. I'm setting the bug to confirmed for both packages as Rober
Binns and me have independently observed the same behaviour.

For what it's worth, I manually linked the directory with all the cms

compaining, but now ghostrscript dies in a way that makes cups think the

[Bug 898986] Re: CMS files not installed for Samsung

2011-12-29 Thread Florian Hars
I attach a log file containing the result of three attempts to print the
ubuntu test page. The first (job 40) used the driver with the label
Samsung CLP-610 Foomatic/foo2qpdl (recommended) in monochrome mode and
resulted in a slightly off-center monochrome test page. Job 41 used the
same driver in color mode and resulted in some whirring sounds and no
output (not really surprising, given that there is a irrecoverable error
from ghostscript in there). Job 42 used the driver Samsung CLP-610,
2.0.0 and resulted in a single page saying

SPL-C ERROR - Please use the proper driver
POSITION: 0x0 (0)
SYSTEM: src/xl_image
LINE: 606
VERSION: SPL-C 5.35 11-20-2007

The cms files the log complains about may be remnants of a failed
attempt to install the proprietary driver (which I only tried after
observing the problems described above).

[Bug 898986] Re: CMS files not installed for Samsung

2011-12-23 Thread Florian Hars
I just have to add that the PCL 5c driver is no panacea, either. Apart
from the low resolution, it just garbles a different (and seemingly
smaller) set of output files that the PCL 6 XL driver. Until now the
only reliable way to print a file on a Samsung CLP-610 in Ubuntu 11.10
is to copy the file to a computer still running Ubuntu 11.04 and print
it using the samsung proprietary driver that happens to work there.

[Bug 889545] [NEW] Vari-Bright™ is enabled by default

2011-11-12 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

In the default configuration, Vari-Bright™ is enabled, which makes a
laptop mostly unusable, as it arbitrarily messes with the backlight
brightness, turning is so low that you cannot see anything on websites
with a dark background and so bright as to hurt the eyes in fullscreen
editor windows with white background, sometimes changing the brightness
if you scroll just one line or even pulsating with the rhythm of a
blinking cursor. That would be acceptable as a work of conceptual art,
but not in a productivity tool.

Fix: disable Vari-Bright™.

[Bug 886571] [NEW] printing from libreoffice garbles output

2011-11-05 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

If I write a text in libreoffice and then print it, a random subset of
the characters in the output are replaced with another character (I have
seen ¨ and u in different documents). If I export as PDF, I can print
that document without problems.

I print to the IPP service on a Samsung CLP-610ND printer using the
recommended foomatic CLP-610 driver (the other CLP-610 and the CLP-610ND
driver offered by the config panel do always produce a use the proper
driver error page).

Other people have seen the same behaviour with a HP LaserJet 1022
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870870
and a HP Color LaserJet 1600
http://www.ubuntu-forum.de/index.php?page=ThreadpostID=337315

This is a regression in 11.10.

2011-02-15 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you plug in an USB stick with an invalid partiton table that contains
an entry with a partition that links to is self as its successor,
nautilus (and the Places - Removable Media menu) display many devices
for this patition which won't go away if you remove the stick and can't
be removed manually.

You should be able to reproduce this by dd'ing the attached file to the
beginning of a USB stick.

[Bug 662653] [NEW] tipptrainer moves top window to top on every newline

2010-10-18 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tipptrainer

Whenever ShowPosition(diffPos) in  TtOutputControl::highlightChar in
outputcontrol.cpp is called, a GTK assertion is fired:

(tipptrainer:19176): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_text_view_scroll_to_mark:
